Gwen Stefani for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine

Posted on August 08, 2012

Gwennie thinks pink, and looks fabulous doing it.

Gwen Stefani is featured in the September 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine photographed by Terry Richardson and styled by Lori Goldstein.

On her style: “I’ve always been a girl who loves to dress up. I already put my makeup on twice today: I put it on to take my kid to school, and then I went home, washed my face, and put it on again to have lunch with you. I like to make my husband like me more and he likes it when I’m wearing makeup.”

On staying fit: “I hate talking about my body [all the time]; it’s ridiculous. There is no secret: You just have to eat healthy, work out, and torture yourself! I like to wear clothes too much, so I try to keep focused.”

On motherhood: “It’s superfun being a mom, but it’s hard too. Finding that balance between work and family is the hardest thing I’ve ever done—by far.”

On fame and gossip: “That someone would say something untrue or bad about me doesn’t bother me. It’s like water off a duck’s back. None of that stuff matters. There’s something in me, being this passive person, that those kinds of things don’t upset me. I know they can say anything; they can just make something up. But what are you going to do? It’s not part of my reality, so it’s okay.”

Just yesterday we said that pink’s a lot harder to wear than most people realize. To that we’ll add that pink is, in our observation, the most abused color in the style world; constantly worn in shades that don’t flatter the wearer. Gwen’s modeling a range of pinks here and because she’s Gwen Stefani, Master’s-level dress-wearer, she can make almost all of them work. Although if we had to pick the one that’s working the least, it’d be that Diane von Furstenberg jumpsuit. That’s looking a little Barbie on her.

And the blacks are there because she’s Gwen Stefani. It’s as close to her signature color as black can be.

gorgeous. she really needs to wear her hair down a lot more often.

  • Tadiana

Gwennie almost makes that boob-pockets dress look good.

  • marilyn

GW is a fantastic designer and model.  Her pictures convey joy and a spirit for living.  She is the alter ego for Victoria (Frown) Beckham.    I wish I liked her music more, but that may be a matter of generational taste.   She is creative and joyful.

Unfortunately she had to wear the mop head dress and coat. Were those from a PR challenge? Other than the Alexander McQueen disasters, she looks great!

    • Kristine Van Bebber

That’s funny, I always say the exact same thing about her music and she and I am just one month older than she.

Love, love, love her though. As you say, creative and joyful.

  • MajorBedhead

The Vera Wang looks so much better on her than it does on the model. For a bridal look, that model is funereal of face & hair.

I have a huge girl crush on Gwen Stefani. I think she looks great in all the looks, but the two black pieces are my favourites.

    • Heather

Funny, I missed that it was from a bridal collection. Who is getting married – Wednesday Addams?

      • H3ff

I love the idea of a black wedding dress. And it verges more on dramatically beautiful than Addams.

        • JasmineAM

YES to black dresses. Whenever my nuptials happen, I’m already down to either a deep red, or a black gown.

      • Lori

I liked the black bridal collection more before Vera announced that she was getting divorced. It seemed dramatic and different when it was shown, but now it just seems either sad or bitter. Which makes me sad (but not bitter, thank goodness).

  • Sobaika

I also think it’s refreshing that she is honest about her body. It’s so much better than hearing, “Oh no, I never work out. I just have such low body fat and muscle tone from chasing around after my kids!”

    • Heather

No kidding about Richardson. Editors might want to think about how continuing to use him makes them complicit in his skeeziness. It’s disturbing that he continues to find work.

And if nothing else, he’s a s****y photographer.

      • Alloy Jane

Ugh, can’t stand that guy, I totally tweeted Harper’s Bazaar my opinion. We should make a petition to keep that sick fuck out of magazines, hah.

    • MilaXX

yep, I appreciate when folks are honest about how they stay fit.

    •!/rmccarthyjames RMJ12345

Agreed about Gwen being honest about how she keeps her body. I remember when I was a young teen, I read an interview where she said that she couldn’t have pizza, basically described her Victoria Beckham esque approach to eating. It was really refreshing, because instead of feeling jealous/self-hating when I looked at her abs, I could be like “that is nice, but…. I have pizza.” *pats belly*

  • Heather

She looks great – and much better than the models too.

Is that boob-pocket dress the same one that looked so bad on Jessica Biel the other day? Gwennie’s wearing the s*** out of it.

    • Deac82

No, this is Jil Sander and the one on Biel was Dior.  However, Raf Simons designed both.

      • formerlyAnon

How does that work – that the same designer designs for two houses in (I’m guessing) the same year?

        • Christian van den Herik

The Jil Sander one was from his last collection (A/W ’12, which is why it’s in magazines now), then he got sacked at Jil Sander, because the real Jil Sander came back and he took the position at Dior which Galliano left behind. The dress from Dior is from the Haute Couture A/W ’12, which was shown a little while ago, which is why celebs are wearing it…

          • formerlyAnon

            Thank-you for the explanation. There’s so much I don’t know . . .

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

If I were the model in that Versace dress I would feel very sad because Gwen looks SO much better in it. That girl can certainly wear a dress that is for sure.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Terry Richardson. GO AWAY.  That being said, Gwennie here is a class act and world class dress wearer.  There should be awards for shit like that.

  • Kiltdntiltd

She looks amazeballs. Every look is terrific. And that Vera Wang is smoking hot.

  • S B Hadley Wilson

She looks better than all the models, methinks.

  • mjude

i have to say the vera wang is my fave look

  • Gus Casals

I gasped at the The Row dress. It’s a fantastic piece and girl is working the shit out of it.

  • NCDFan

She’s made every one of those fashions look much more attractive than the models have. Perhaps because she has both curves and a variety of facial expressions none of which is apathy.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’d actually say the McQueen is too much for her, rather than the Furstenberg. And the Sander’s boob cup dress is giving me a Biel-in-Dior déjà-vu.

    Ugh, Richardson again.

    • out for a walk

I’m sure part of it’s the photography, but the McQueen on her looks like someone put paperdoll clothes on a paperdoll. Why did they bother borrowing the dress for this shoot if it’s just going to look like she’s not even wearing it?

Bleh to the whole thing, though I love the MCQueen on the model and the Versace on Gwen.

  • Ben

she looks pretty kick-ass in every picture. My favorite is hands down the Versace one. The McQueen dress is well, just no.

    • AthenaJ

The McQueen looks like a pink Mr Snuffleupagus (Mrs Snuffleupagus?).

  • belfebe

Gwennie can do no wrong.  She can make sad outfits look cool and exciting.  Go Gwennie!

  • Rebecca Jay

Gwen is not just my girl-crush.  I am completely and devotedly in love with her.

*The feet on the Jil Sander model (last pic) made me cry real tears.  Poor thing .. tortured and ridiculous looking in those shoes.

    • mountainFashionista

OMG those feet!!  I didn’t notice them the first time around, and now I keep scrolling back up to look at them.  I hope she only has to wear them for a few minutes!

  • marlie

I love her! I think the leather, The Row dress is FABULOUS!

  • Judy_J

She looks effing FANTASTIC!  Love that pink leather dress.  Gorgeous.

  • Dixie Murphy Ross

Her smile freaks me out. The shape of it looks like the martians from Sesame Street. She looks GORGEOUS though.

  • Deac82

That’s a very arresting cover–reminds me of the old Vogue covers.

  • Maya KC

She looks fabulous and brilliant, in spite of the photographer. I do not understand why Terry Richardson is famous, he just gives everyone in his photos a slightly seedy look.

  • TheOriginalLulu

She’s one of my girl-crushes. She just seems like so much fun.
Liking the sound bites, too. Seems like she’s all about enjoying herself and not whining about the pitfalls of fame. Love the pics. Agreed that she can pull off stuff that most women wouldn’t.

  • NDC_IPCentral

In more than half of the spread’s shots she seems to have lost her neck, including the cover.  Weird positioning of her head or lousy retouching/Photo-shopping.

  • sagecreek

she has actual expressions on her face! I give her a 10 just for that.

  • jw_ny

Love everything about Gwen!  She has such great personal style, not to mention exceptional talent.  She’s probably the only women I’d switch teams for..;)

    • alyce1213

      She’s my girl crush.

  • RebeccaKW

She is wearing the hell out of that leather dress.  She has the right edge to make the girly pinks be less Barbie.

I love her comment about her weight-that it’s just working out and eating right.  It cracks me up that interviewers (and the readers) think they will discover a magic potion recommending by a celebrity.

  • G

People have a “blood” color.  For some folks, red is the best.  For others it’s a shade of pink.  Has to do with skin, eye and hair color as well.

  • sockandaphone

gorgeous. love everything about these pictures :)

  • Joyce VG

I think she’s pretty close to being the perfect human.

  • LinXGUA

Mommy, Mommy! please buy me Barbie Gwen Stefany. I want to be her when i grow up!

  • MilaXX

I think she looks better than the model in every outfit. Then again I have always like Gwen.

    • ChiKat67

I completely agree! (especially the one modeling Vera Wang!).

  • kaycem

i cannot stress just how much i abhor terry richardson’s photos.

but gwen is fantastic and serves much face / body / fashion, so at least there’s that.

  • ChiKat67

Dear Christina Aguilera.  THIS is how you do blond and tan, but don’t you DARE try to wear that The Row dress until you recognize & embrace your correct size.  Even then, please pass on this dress and find one that flatters & fits you THAT’S IN YOUR ACTUAL SIZE (not the size you were 6 years ago).  That is all.

  • Gayer Than Thou

I totally want an Alexander McQueen-Gwen Stefani toilet paper cozy.

  • Ganell Dunn

  • H3ff

Fabulous, but did the comment about her husband not strike anyone else as odd? “I like to make my husband like me more and he likes it when I’m wearing makeup.”

Just the way she phrases it makes it seem like she is ONLY wearing makeup to make her husband desire her.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

will i get herpes in my eyes if i look at a terry richardson photograph?

    • LesYeuxHiboux

       Seems likely.

  • janinedm

Those quotes give me a sad. Look, I’m nowhere near Gwen Stefani in terms of fame, looks, money, or accomplishment and I don’t see myself going to that much trouble to impress Gavin Rossdale.

    • Amelia Logan

I don’t know many guys who like make up.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I love Gwen’s style!!  She defines “cool”!  Rolling Stone did a “women who rock” series and did not include her – I thought that was such a miss, because ever since the Don’t Speak video, I have thought she was the one of the most kick-ass girls in entertainment.  The perfect blend of high fashion, rocker chic!!

  • ringthing

They have her styled like a Marc Jacobs perfume bottle in that Jil Sander dress.

  • formerlyAnon

Gotta admit she’s working that jumpsuit.

I’ve been fond of her since she was a teenager singing ska-pop that sounded almost like ska. And I’ve liked how she dresses herself since then. She pays attention to her own body and her age and her place in the world and has changed with the times – all within her own vision of what she likes, or maybe what she wants to project.

edited, twice, because I cannot proof read

  • Mori Clark

How the hell is she in her 40s? She looks positively radiant.

  • Sara__B

What a great model! Never boring, always fabulous. (And she has many facial expressions, too!)

  • sk8tfan

She looks better than the models. And she projects and energy and sense of fun enhance the clothes.

  • crash1212

Those last four pics are pretty close to perfection. Girl can work a dress and a camera. I’ve always loved Gwen – she’s a hoot.

  • l_c_ann

The skirt on the (last) Jill Sanders dress looks simple at first glance, then… is extremely complex with long darts, some unsewn darts and different fabrics as reimagined for Harpers.  I’d love to see other views of it, just to understand why and if it moves well or not.

  • gabbilevy

She’s gorgeous but Terry Richardson must have some serious dirt on all the magazine editors because I don’t understand why anyone would hire him otherwise.

  • watchmeboogie

It makes me sick, SICK I tell you, how freaking amazing she looks. She’s just ageless, and then she’s talented, hard-working, and down-to-earth too? Someone hold my hair back, I can’t stand it. Love her.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

never forget how valuable photoshop can be. it does more than make people thin.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Every time I see her, I have to remind myself I do not have the skin tone for platinum hair.  She’s gorgeous.

  • Sarah Winningham

Now that is a vagina hat (I really, really miss Musical Mondays)!

  • Elena

I don’t like her for some reason, but I can’t deny she looks pretty fab here.

  • Elizabeth Siegel

    Terry Richardson did that?!

    • alyce1213

You can tell by the white background.

  • pookiesmom

One of the best ladystar interviews I’ve read in a while. I love that she’s so honest and confident.

  • LilyPad

Best cover in a while. I just love her so much! So gorgeous and interesting to look at. Some people I wonder, “now, why is this person famous?” But she has real star quality that you can’t deny.

    • Linderella

Oh, but I can…sorry, not trying to be a bitch, but just couldn’t resist it.  Don’t like her, don’t get the appeal at all.

  • Lisa

LOVE HER!!! And she looks fan-fucking-tastic!

  • Lauren Lynch Fox

She looks great! Cool to see that Alexander McQueen pink feather thing on her.

  • Truly_Outrageous

I love the interview potion. She just seems so honest and down to earth. No diva (in a bad way) here. Oh and she looks fabulous too.

  • quiltrx

They definitely picked things that really suited her style.  Nice pics.

And couldn’t Gavin be bothered to come and roll around nude for the camera or something?

    • Lisa

I know! Imagine him not thinking of OUR welfare!  Frankly, I’m hurt….

  • Linderella

    Do. Not. Get. Her.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

To me, she looks better than the models in those clothes.  AND if I looked that good about birthin’ two bouncing baby boys, I’d be ready to flaunt it, too.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

About halfway through these shots I was like “Who the hell photographed this shoot, Terry Richardson?”. Scrolled up, confirmed. What a waste of a fierce gal in fabulous garb.  That topknot is stupid and the blown-out lighting and unimaginative blocking piss me off. They look like test shots.

No wonder she looks pained on the cover.

She is working that leather dress from The Row like it owes her rent. It cannot be at all comfortable. Bet it ends up on Serena Van Der Woodsen before the end of the season.

  • amanda lynn

i love that she’s aging (albeit slowly) so gracefully.  she’s kept her style beautifully.  GO, GWEN!

  • lrhoff

    Fabulous.  You go, girl.

  • RzYoung

I love how honest she always is about her figure, I’ve read several times that she hates working out but that that’s the price she pays. None of that ‘oh I eat everything and I never work out’ crap that you get from others *coughcoughblakelivelycoughcough*

HATE HER. But she does look really great and I have no idea why this chick won’t age. But still, HATE HER.

  • ccm800

    Jerry Hall Realness

  • Susan Mayer

I wish she’d dye her hair pink again, circa Return of Saturn.  She’s the only person I’ve ever thought should have been born with pink hair.

  • Jessica | Surely Sonsy

    Fanfuckingtabulous. Love her.

  • guest2visits

Love the music. Gwen easily wears the types of things that might look over the top on others. This is all fun and beautiful.
She even makes the overdone Vera Wang look a thousands times better than it should.

  • zazzu

I honestly don’t like any of these outfits but, somehow, Gwen Stefani can make anything look good. She has a gift.

  • TheVeryLivingEND

That leather The Row dress gave me a fever.

  • Larkin21

Love. Her. That Vera Wang black dress looks particularly amazing on her.
