Eddie Redmayne for Esquire Korea

Posted on August 06, 2012

Here is a boystar to break up the string of ladystars we’ve been showing you today.

Eddie Redmayne covers the August 2012 issue of Esquire Korea photographed by Pablo Arroyo.

Eddie Redmayne is the Jessica Chastain of boystars; a very good looking guy with a body built for fashion, who nonetheless can’t take a decent picture if his life depended on it. It’s puzzling.

He looks wary, crazy or sinister in every shot. And you’ve gotta figure that for every picture we see here, there were 200 rejected shots, which really makes you wonder how bad they must have been.

Anyway, that was your Boy Break. Make the most of it.

Oh, and we’ll take that trench coat, please.

Just wanted to comment on the pants in the first picture. Huzzah! As a male its a small wonder to see pants that, if you are going to design them as straight leg slim-fits, at least taper up through the thighs so the pants actually sit at the waist properly (as here). But yeah, he is making silly faces. Still love the clothes though.

  • Joyce VG

He’s going to be Marius in the Les Miz movie.  I think he is a fine actor but in no way a model.

    • JosephLamour

I agree, even though, thats what he started out as. Also, why is that arrow on the cover pointing directly to his cash and prizes?

  • CYVH9000

he is so adorable, i don’t care if he makes weird faces. i hate being photographed too!

  • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

I really want that fuzzy blue sweater. So over summer.

  • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

so cute and yeah, great for fashion but he poses all weird all the time.

  • ScarlettHarlot

He creeps me out to no end. He really does. There is something so unsettling about him – his lips, or how he positions them, perhaps? I don’t know what it is, but I get really unnerved just seeing him.

  • lakipster

Just imagine what his pictures would look like without his previous modeling experience.

That being said, I still would.

    • Sobaika

      Indeed. Most definitely would.

      • GenieinTX

Oh yeah, totally would.  I love this guy.

  • lbl

Aw, he’s a horrible model but I still love him. I think people like that just need to work with specific photographers (don’t ask me any names). More dynamic ones, maybe?

    • Aurumgirl

Maybe photographers who are more interested in selling him as an image instead of selling the clothes he’s wearing in a magazine.  I think the photographer’s usually the one who decides where the shots will be taken, how the model will generally pose, and the mood of the photos….so if he looks terrible here, it’s not all his fault.

  • call_me_schmeg

he looks so surprised to see me.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

That first pic makes me thinks of South Park’s Butters… “loo loo loo I’ve got some apples…”

    • Le_Sigh

I just did a spit-take over my keyboard!

      • Vlasta Bubinka

Loo loo loo, you got some too.

    • quiltrx

J’adore Butters!  He would look precious in that sweater, too. :)

      • Vlasta Bubinka

Especially if he tops it with Professor Chaos gear!

  • ASK26

hahahahah   wait was this supposed to be serious?

  • Clueless_Jock

I like the clothes but this is such an awkward editorial.

  • http://profiles.google.com/caitlinsteinert Caitlin Steinert

He’s much better in motion than in photographs, and I’m trying to live with that fact. Guess I’ll just keep re-watching all his movies. Oh those freckles…

    • Kristin McNamara

As a super-speckly freckle-face myself, I must say, he is doing us proud. I LOVE those freckles!

  • joe_tey83

All I can see is Alfred E. Neuman. So… quite far from “good looking”. Even farther from “very good looking”.

  • Tatiana Luján

    I think he looks HOT.

  • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

He’s almost got a Willem Dafoe thing going on in some of these. I think it’s the crazyeyes.

  • Corazon Nunez

I think he looks nice (I love those apple shots) but in the black and white pics, his freckles make him look like he has the plague.

  • Judy_J

He doesn’t look comfortable in front of the camera.  That might account for the wary/crazy/sinister looks.

  • http://twitter.com/obscureobjects David Calder

He would obviously take a better photo if he had me in his life. I have no idea why. I’m kidding. I know exactly why.

  • crash1212

I find him odd looking at best. Also, I think he’s better ‘in motion’ as opposed to still photographs. I am not gargoyle-like in person, but there’s not one good picture of me out in the world. I fear Eddie and I have that in common.

  • MilaXX

I willing to overlook the bad pics simply because mama loves a ginger man!

  • boweryboy

Yum! What can I say? I have odd tastes when it comes to my men.

Wasn’t he a model before he became an actor? So you would think he could take a good picture. Though I’m not complaining.

  • hillmad

Wow, you both nailed it (of course!): He really IS the male Jessica Chastain! They look like brother and sister to boot!

  • krelnick

Dudes–go with Benedict Cumberbatch and you won’t have those problems.

    • littlemac8

Yes! to this!!  Have we seen him in ANY photoshoots!  Eddie has the perfect body for clothes, THE END!

  • JasmineAM

I have no idea who he is, but he’s VERY nice. I love his freckles too!

  • Snailstsichr

Maybe he would look better if he were wearing socks. All I can see is stank-foot.

    • Pennymac

Agree on the stankfoot. But what is distracting to me is the “artfully” brushed towards his face hair, very Bieberish.Yucky.
I never did decide if I liked him or hated him in Birdsong, either….

      • homespunner

        The hair! Exactly!

  • HM3

Looks like a twee David Bowie.

    • DeTrop

I’m seeing a twee Dennis Leary.

  • nannypoo

He has a very unusual face – he’s not really handsome but he is very interesting-looking. He usually looks to me like he should be playing some barefoot character in a movie about backwoods meth dealers, and then he turns up in that Marilyn Monroe movie looking sophisticated and pretty hot. I’ve seen a lot of pictures of him that are better than these.

Am I the only one who is wondering why Esquire Korea has a cover with the dominant copy in English?

And I was all “so what” about this spread until the trench coat shot.  Yum.

  • Excellence_and_Elegance

All the problems are with his head.
Triangular face/head, when combined with that haircut is just unfortunate
He’s doing some weird things with his eyebrows
Freckles coming across as blemishes rather than attractive
Lips are pinker than, well, I won’t be vulgar

    My opinion, of course.

  • granddelusion

  • j_anson

Meeeeeh. I am not buying what he’s selling.

  • Susan Crawford

I love the pic of him with the three apples . . . I’m going to obsess over the hidden meaning of this for a long time. But for a cute boy (love me those freckles) he sure ends up looking all kinds of silly in photos. And on film, he is mesmerizing – definitely the boy looks best when in motion!

  • littlemac8

what was the name of that Thumbsucker movie:  Oh…

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I’m too old to know who he is.

  • formerlyAnon

Is his hairline unusually far back, that the hair is brushed forward in every pic?

  • http://twitter.com/calkuhn Cal Kuhn

seems more like a case of bad photographer, bad photo editor.

  • Trisha26

Not every actor/star is a model. Why make them so? It’s not bad enough the fashion industry makes guys & gals more than size 0 with the curves & features of normal humans feel like hideous whales, no, they also tell us those with unconventional looks are stunning, gorgeous creatures we of normal, conventional looks should emulate and adore. Enough. I can appreciate him on screen, not as a model.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

He actually is a model :)

  • prettybigkitty

I actually think the pictures are perfectly fine.   He’s very photogenic.  Unlike Robert Pattinson, who is the worst of the goodlooking boystars who do not look good in pictures.

  • guest2visits

He always looks very raw and real. The b/w with his hand and all his freckles is nice, and the one above it, in his suit.
A better actor than a poser.

  • quiltrx

I like the ode-to-Belmondo pic in the trench…but the rest, he’s just kind of off-putting.

  • lrhoff

    I think he’s adorable…..

  • ccm800

Why is he wearing a lady suit on the front cover?

  • Michelle Cunningham

I am a beautiful but incredibly unphotogenic (funnily enough spell-check rejected this word) woman.  My sister is gorgeous in photos.  I am pretty in person.  Go figure.  I think he is just not good on still film. I can’t wait to see the motion picture.  Maybe I’ll be a screen goddess one day *snort*

  • RzYoung

I’m totally  not convinced by his acting talent and these photos just go to prove that he couldn’t emote if his life depended on it!

  • miagain

    Birdsong…. sigh

  • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

Maybe he is struggling to take the kind of photos boy stars take after being a fashion model…

  • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

The trench coat one is the only one I’d consider good. The last one is nice, but not really a fashion picture.

I do find myself, however, resentful of the jacket in the cover shot.
