Cover Girl: Katy Perry for ELLE Magazine

Posted on August 02, 2012

Like a Grinch’s heart when he hears Whos singing, Katy Perry’s eyes grew ten sizes larger on the cover of Elle.

Katy Perry covers the September 2012 issue of ELLE magazine photographed by Carter Smith and styled by Joe Zee. Hair by Renato Campora. Makeup by Jake Bailey.

But damn, if that’s not an amazing shot of her. Girl, that is ENTIRELY your dress.

Fine. We’ll shut up about the nail art. Just this once.

Why did they cover up the pretty shoulders of that dress with that stupid wig?

      • quiltrx

      • Deborah Lipp

         My thought EXACTLY.

    • Cindi Williams

Since Katy no longer wants the Candy Queen title, I’ll take it.

      • Sobaika

It’s funny – she doesn’t want to be candy queen but that’s sort of what’s happening on the cover. It’s going to take a long transition and style overhaul to make people NOT think of saturated colors and cupcake boobs when they hear Katy Perry.

    • RebeccaKW

I love crazy nails, but I agree: time and place.  However, it’s Katy Perry and it’s a magazine cover.  It would be weird if her nails weren’t crazy.  She looks amazing.  However, I notice an open mouth in both shots.  Hate that.

      • ASK26

        BOTH shots?

        • RebeccaKW

Well, when I was on here the first time, the thumbnail was a b&w of a different shot and then there was the cover shot.  Now they are the same.  So…

    • VicksieDo

That’s not her real eye color (cough- Photoshop) but I love that dress on her~!

    • April Goff

Is it just me, or does the model look like an angry Alexander Skarsgård in drag? Maybe it’s the cheekbones.

      • Kiltdntiltd

        You’ve discovered his secret!!!!!!

    • SewingSiren

I love the dress. Not quite as much as presented on the magazine cover.

    • quiltrx

There is some strange mid-body twisting going on in that pose.  And they seem to have photoshopped her into not having hipbones…and where did they hide her boobs?

    • marlie

She looks great on the cover, but this time I hate the nail art. 😛

    • Coleen

Instead of the nail art, I find myself wishing for a pair of short gloves on that cover, and for her hair to be off of the shoulders, but not necessarily in a high ponytail. Just… moved away so we can see the sparkle. That dress is KILLA.

      • formerlyAnon

         The gloves woulda been FABULOUS.

    • ASK26

Is that REALLY her dress …or was it photoshopped to be the dress of the body on the cover?   It just seems to methat her body looks    like it is not totally her body?

    • Pants_are_a_must

      That Halloween wig, though…

    • filmcricket

I love the nail art, actually, I want it for myself.

The dress looks about a thousand times better on her than it did on Salma Hayek, which is not a sentence one types often. I still can’t see those shoulders as anything other than glittery dandruff, though, and generally speaking I don’t really like it; it smells of fake grape flavour.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s a great dress….. encased in a cornucopia cocoon of photoshop.

    • jimmack

Is her waist really that small…or is Photoshopping at play?

      • BeeBeauNYC

I thought the exact same thing. That and that she looks like Keira Knightley in this photo.

      • H3ff

The Uncanny Valley is strong here. Look at how the crease at her waist should be protruding slightly, yet the ‘protrusion’ has been erased out completely.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Fabulous dress!

    • Vickiefantastico

      LOVE the Grinch simile.

    • MilaXX

Totally Katy & every element works for her.

    • formerlyAnon

It took me a long time to warm up to Katy Perry and now, as long as I only see still pictures and not music videos, I have come to almost love her.  Now that everybody else (almost) is totally over her.

Great cover, the dress works & surprisingly, the hair works with it.

    • 3boysful

Her face, made up this way, is a bit reminiscent of Demi Moore here.

    • Amy Ellinger

eee! that’s almost exactly the purple I want for my hair!  Thanks Katy-bear, Love you dearie!

Oh, and damn gurl, great cover.  (although I suspect she actually looked even better before the phunky photoshopping.)

    • alyce1213

She barely looks like herself.  Overstyled and photoshopped to distraction.  Awful.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Didn’t Selma Hayeck squeeze herself into this dress a while ago? Katy is wearing it well, but the pink background is kinda screwing it all up.

    • tereliz

Wow, that dress would have made Katy look so classy. If not for the wig/nails/hot pink background. I guess a “klassy Katy” would not have looked like Katy, though. Still, yin-yang nails? For ELLE?

    • Ann M. Erickson

The nail art is ew. Makes it too busy.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks amazing. All of the colors are working together, definitely falling on the side of “exotic classy” rather than “possibly trashy”. Why can’t you be the Candy Queen forever, Katy? Look at Dolly, she’s still workin’ it.

    • Judy_J

I would never have known who that was on the cover if you hadn’t told me.  She looks so generic…she’s got a Barbie doll face.

    • snarkykitten

      nope. those nails are hiddy.

    • Call me Bee

Well, she looks pretty good here. But I still dislike her. If only she could sing as well as she can model.

    • Sara__B

Why take Katy Perry and make her look unlike Katy Perry?

    • Esz

I want that dress! And I love the blunt fringe 😀

That is a GORGEOUS shot of whoever the hell that is. A plastic wax incarnation of Katy Perry after her trip to another galaxy, I assume?

      • LANDRU3000

I thought it was Zooey Deschanel.

    • guest2visits

      This is a beautiful cover; but I thought the nail art was uninspired this time – it should have been extraoridinary;
c’mon, it’s Katy Perry… Elle cover.. purple, fushia, sequins…? This design is almost ancient.

    • ccm800

I mean come on with the PS of her mid section – its like she is standing behind a pink stencil.

    • RzYoung

yin-yang nail art!!! arrgghhh, my eyes.

    • Anthagio

      I totally don’t hate it.

    • Jacqueline Winters

The dress is great, the nails are OK, but they really needed a shorter hairstyle
