Carrie Underwood on the Today Show

Posted on August 16, 2012

Y’know, we should, by all rights, think this is tacky:

Carrie Underwood performed at NBC Studios in New York City for the ‘Today Show’ in a top by Alice + Olivia and shorts by 7 For All Mankind paired with B Brian Atwood booties.

Alice + Olivia Elenora Sequined Long Sleeve Top

7 For All Mankind Brocade Foil Block Print Shorts

B Brian Atwood ‘Fruitera’ Bootie

Because – and we urge you to say the following words out loud to get the full effect – sequined top and silver foil hot pants.

But the only word that ever popped into our heads upon hearing Carrie Underwood’s name is “bland.” After years of looking at red carpet pictures of her, that’s the only thing we can say about her. She never truly looked bad, in our memory, but she never stood out and always looked to us like the prettiest girl in your average high school.

Is this tacky? Only a little, but gloriously so. Get in touch with your inner honky-tonk, girl. It’ll do you a world of good on the style front, where tacky trumps boring any day of the week.

I’d like this a whole lot better if the shorts were hemmed.

    • 3boysful

Seriously.  I am sure I couldn’t afford the shorts (were I to want them), and they aren’t even finished?

      • Judy_J

I guess they were meant to look like cutoffs, but when you’re paying what I’m sure these cost, they should be properly hemmed.

        • semirose

This forever. I tried on a pair of Joe’s shorts recently and was trying to figure out why they were trying to sell “cut-offs” at those prices. Just hem the damn shorts. Made me sad since other than that they fit really well.

  • Why on earth would you need a brooch with all that other tacky crap going on?

    • schadenfreudelicious

agreed, the broach pushes it over the top for me…, i would however kill for her legs…

    • Sobaika

Right? I would actually get behind this outfit if it weren’t for the brooch.

  • I think she looks great. Sure those shorts are SHORT, but somehow they don’t come across as skanky, since they aren’t overly tight. And the top, also, is trimly cut, but not overly so. Delicate balancing act, nicely executed.

    • Vickiefantastico

For a performer in this day and age, she looks darn right respectable. I love it!

      • She looks cute to me too, I covet the top.

    •  Since it doesn’t seem like you can see her butt cheeks, I’m fine with the shorts. The broach is totally unnecessary, though.

I think I kind of like it, actually. Someone check my head, I must have a fever.

      • I love the brooch, so I must be feverish, too.

    • She is kinda workin’ it… The broach has got to go though.

    • librarygrrl64

The silhouette is very flattering, but, to paraphrase Dorothy Parker, her color palette runs the gamut from A to…B. Always. Hair, makeup, and clothing. Boring and bland.

  • I LOVE those shoes. Kinda wish she’d picked a different lipstick than Silver City Pink though.

    • MissAnnieRN

I can’t believe I like them.  But I like. Nay, LOVE.  They sort of remind me of an über glammed up version of my daily work footwear.  Maybe that’s why I am having covetous emotions of a bootie, which I normally hate.

      • mountainFashionista

Me too! I’ve been staring at them trying to figure out what makes them work, since until this point I have found booties to be universally ugly.

  • She’s got great gams.  Had I legs like that, I would probably wear silver foil hot pants.  Given that she’s performing, I think it’s a pretty good look, though I am less sure about the color tones match.

  • call_me_schmeg

go on with your shiny, spangled and short. foiled cutoffs and some big hair in the morning. yes, miss carrie. YES.

  • Those shoes are the only thing bothering me here. (Hey, I’m from the Souh – I get big & glittery.)

  • newleaf1

I would totally wear shorts like that if I had those legs.  It’s a little country, but she’s a little country.  The brooch is strange, though – makes me wonder if she wore it on someone’s request.

  • The shoes offend me far more then the top and hot pants.

    • YES.  Good call, as those shoes are truly offensive.  And, in my opinion, they don’t belong with that outfit at all — even if they were not offensive.

  • teensmom99

tacky trumps boring any day of the week.”  This is why we all need gay uncles!

  • TheOriginalLulu

Yeah but this is nothing compared to some of the crap we’ve seen her wear. This, as stagewear, is fine. Stagewear is supposed to be glittery and a bit on the tacky side.

  • The clashing metallics and sparkly makes my eyes twitch a little, but I do think she looks really cute. I feel like this would all be cuter if her hair weren’t so fake yellow-blond. I bet she’d look real cute as a strawberry blond.

  • It’s slightly tacky but I like it.

  • BazoDee

I love the pieces separately -the wash of neutrals though is sort of boring and they sort of clash -which is amazing really. Man I would have loved those shoes and shorts with a darker top -although for a morning show maybe keep the top and find pants that match!

  • TieDye64

She looks very cute. She’d look even better with different lip color.

    • Spreecord

Her eye makeup frightens me. Her lashes must weigh half a pound each.

  • I agree. It works.

  • bakingbarrister

I like the top and the shoes, but not together and not with those ugly shorts. The shorts also photograph terribly.

  • Country Barbie personified.  A step up from boring, I guess. (But truly, her legs are amazing.)

    • janetjb

      Barbie’s legs should be amazing!

  • lilibetp

    I hate those booties!

  • Not sure why but I rather like the whole ensemble.  It screams “CARRIE UNDERWOOD” without being gross about it.  I even like the shoes, and that bootie style (with straps no less) usually leaves me cold.  Hmm, maybe I’ve had too much coffee today.

  • ScarlettHarlot

I’d like it better if her lips didn’t match her top

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

The lipstick is KILLING ME.  It’s so Angie Dickinson.

    • alyce1213

I’m not sure if that’s a bad or good thing.  I love Angie D. and was obsessed over her lipstick (and hair) when I was young.

  • MilaXX

eh’ It’s popstar chic. She’s not doing a RC or walking about town. It’s an outdoor concert in 100 degree weather.  In case that wasn’t clear, this works for me.

  • Kayceed

I love everything but the jewelry. The on-sale-at-the-souk brass earrings, coupled with a mid-century brooch – odd to say the least. I say big old tacky rhinestone hoop earrings, baby, the bigger the better.

  • SewingSiren

She always looks like somebody that has no idea dressed her.

  • alyce1213

I think she looks great.  Nothing you’d wear in real life or anything, but consider the venue and the performer.  It’s appropriate, fun, and flattering.  She has the body and persona to wear this stuff — not everyone does — so good for her!

  • It’s cute and she looks fabulous, but I don’t love it as stage wear — the foil doesn’t seem like it would come across any farther than a few feet away. In the first picture I thought they were just bleached denim shorts.

  • Rand Ortega

From the waist down, she’s young, chic & hip (her gams are KICKIN’!). From the waist up, she’s my great aunt Millie who always insisted on sequin sweaters & brooches to match. A distressed white tank w/ sequin touches ala Balmain would have knocked this out of the park.

  • mjude

she is so sweet that i just overlook some of her choices but i thought this was good for the today show performance.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

I met a gin soaked barroom queen in Memphis….

  • SapphoPoet

I think she looks downright demure in this outfit compared to what other singers her age are wearing. Having said that, however, heels and shorts will never look right to me.

  • I think I would like it more if I weren’t so distracted by the oil slick legs, crazy fake tan, frosted lipstick,  pancake make-up, gi-normous earrings, brooch (?) and that hair! oy vay. I know, I know, she’s a country music star but a gal’s gotta’ know when to quit with the accoutrements? She’s so pretty and young – she doesn’t need all that. But as to your comments on her being at least a bit daring in this, yes. You are right. But the shorts being cut offs ruins it for me. I’ll take that top please in medium though.

  • kikisayshi

I think it is fitting, and only fitting, for a performance. If she were on the RC or even a gal on the street this would be so out.

  • VicksieDo

For performing, I think it’s cool.

  • As she gets older her eyes seem to sink into the back of her skull hidden under all that mascara and eye liner. Gurl, one word comes to mind…”Chupacabara”!!!

  • It’s a bit Disco EllieMae Clampit! All she needs is a pet racoon and a monkey!

    • formerlyAnon

God help me but I think this is a good thing.

  • Call me Bee

I don’t know–I kinda like it.. (ooop–as she ducks to avoid flying coffee cups…)  It’s just the thing on a hot August morning jumping about in front of a bunch of teenagers.  Not something you’d wear on the street, but on this stage, it’s a good look–all shiny and cute.

As an aside–did you see Lionel Ritchie on the Today Show this morning?  The audience was full of geezers!  (I can say that cuz  I am one.)  It was pretty entertaining!

  • PinkLemon

“Prettiest girl in your average High School” – HAHA. yes. right on the nose.

  • This morning, I really thought the pink metallic and the blue metallic were too clashy (plus, I don’t love long sleeves with shorts). But, she looks cute and she sounded great!

  • Imasewsure

I ignore the spangles because she’s country but the first word that came in to my head was “casual”… I think she looks great and country comfy but it seems more mall-store date night than national tv show appearance ready…

  • She needed the shiny or she would have just looked washed out.  Not that she doesn’t anyways. Glitter and sequins do not make everything better. And you know its bad when the glitter and sequins have to fight against all the Vaseline you put on your legs.

  • guest2visits

It was perfect for a street show in August.

  • Michelle Cunningham

She thinks too hard to ever be honky tonk.  Look at the last photo, she is analyzing the whole performance and beating herself up enough over the outfit.  Poor child.

  • golden_valley

I’m more concerned about her hair and makeup than about the shin clothes. The almost platinum hair with dark roots and shiny white lipstick wash her out no matter how much mascara she wears on the fake lashes.

  • You forgot to say “silver foil hot pants with FRAYED edges that cost more than your whole closet of clothes”.  And makeup that’s apparently been troweled on…

  • nannypoo

I actually like the outfit. It’s the shitty hair and trashy makeup that are tacky.

  • kimmeister

I guess she keeps the hair, lips, clothes, and skin all in the same color family so that the spiderlashes stand out more?

Who knew Brian Atwood made shoes that aren’t platforms!

  • bellafigura1

    I love it.

  • GTrain

Mess. And “bland” is right. If she walked right past me I wouldn’t know her.

    • ASK26

January Jones – I never recognize her without her picture being labelled.

  • UptownNippy

I like the last pic where she is getting ready to flip her mane and has the “that is how it’s done bitches” look on her face.

  • emily mcginnis

i love the top! love it! and i seriously covet her legs. the shorts are a bit too much, but i’d like them if they were just solid white. i guess that would make it boring though. but i’d wear it.

  • jilly_d

Good Christ, the legs! I want to go to there!

  • Monabel

I like the brooch. I’m in favor of brooches. Brooches are underappreciated.

  • margaret meyers

You’re outside, way early on a summer morning in NYC?  What else are you going to perform in?

  • margaret meyers

I’d lose the brooch and change into some platform flip-flops.

  • ballerinawithagun

She is a country singer after all so I think it looks great. And if I had legs like that I would always wear shorts.

  • It works for the venue, and she manages not to look slutty even with foil hot pants, high heels, and a glitter top.

  • Anathema_Device

Oy, that yellow blonde haircolor is awful on her. And flesh-colored lipstick will never not creep me out.

The outfit is great for performing. It is like daytime clothes rendered in evening fabrics.

  • Thathoodwink

It would be hilarious if the shorts, in addition to looking like cut offs, also had tacky pockets hanging from the bottom, but in a fabulously shiny fabric haha!

  • PeaceBang

This is fabulous fun for her. I just wish her make-up didn’t make her face look like it was made of Silly Putty.

  • The country music scene has always been tacky. As Dolly Parton famously said, it cost a lot of money to look that cheap. Besides, stage performance outfits must be graded on a different rubric from other outfits. Sure, it’s tacky, but it suits the performance! She still looks more youthful than Julianne Hough (an embarrassment to ballroom dancers).

  • jsywilson

I can’t see anything past her amazing legs.

  • Aurumgirl

Frayed silver foil hot pants, at that.  And shoes that look like clogs.  Every childhood nightmare in clothing, revisited.

  • I do find her relentlessly boring.

  • librarygrrl64

ALWAYS with the slightly sparkly/glossy white and flesh tones, Carrie. Bland, indeed.

  • Ruth Preston

To me, the clothes aren’t nearly as distracting as the two-burnt-holes-in-a-blanket eye makeup treatment. I’ve just never understood that, especially when it’s combined with nearly colorless lipstick. That said, I think the top is actually kind of cute.

  • h2olovngrl

They are on clearance for 100 dollars! Woohoo!

  • melanie0866

I love it, actually.  Didn’t see that coming.

  • Actually, I like this look, for a country singer on a morning TV show.

  • Farmbot is always blah in my opinion.

  • Vic

She’s so beige and boring. I knew American Idol was on a downward slope when Simon Cowell declared Underwood to be the biggest AI winner on like the third show of that season. Bah. The fix was in. Her boring songs have demonstrated that AI has nothing to do with talent, and everything to do with marketability.

Underwood = boring snoozefest. I stopped watching that year.
