Carly Rae Jepsen for Fashion Magazine

Posted on August 30, 2012

Everyone’s been talking about this cover, and with good reason.

‘Call Me Maybe’ singer Carly Jae Jepsen covers the October 2012 issue of Fashion magazine photographed by Gabor Jurina and styled by Zeina Esmail. Hair & Makeup: Anna Nenoiu. On the cover Carly Rae wears an Alexander McQueen dress, Christian Louboutin heels and Rita Tesolin earrings.

She looks pretty spectacular. Preternaturally smooth and sculpted in that magazine-cover way, of course (total Barbie knees), but we’re talking more about the styling. That is so her dress, and pairing those shoes with it was a sharp and clever choice. It’s a great, model-y kind of shot.

Inside, things go a little more standard in the non-model mode of editorial; smiling at the camera and such.

We can’t really credit her with superior modeling skills but she’s very pretty – and the clothes are interesting, at least.

Gosh, great cover.  Interesting looking young woman. Dare I say it, she’s reminding me ever so slightly of a very young Carly (Simon, that is).  Am I nuts?

    • Clueless_Jock

      Yes, Carly Simon. Definitely.

    • JMansm

I agree that she does look like Carly Simon. Also, when she sang her own kind of folky music when she competed on Canadian Idol she also SOUNDED like Carly Simon – but now, alas, she does the whole commercial pop thing and all that is gone.

      • Erin

She actually said that Call Me Maybe was originally a folk song and she kind of changed it into pop. Probably not an improvement…

        • NC_Meg

I think I want to hear the folk version of that song. I want to know how that works.

          • Amelia Logan

My boyfriend plays in an old timey band and I wish that he even remotely enjoyed this song (he hates it) because I would love it if they covered it.

    • Rand Ortega

Alyce1213, I was just going to type Carly Simon’s newly discovered love child!

    • lucasuk82

Definite resemblance, I think it’s a similar mouth shape.

I totally think she looks like Carly simon, I said it to my daughter as soon as I saw the younger Carly, I grew up listening to the older Carly.

  • marlie

The cover is really good. And I love the feather dress in large part because it’s so interesting!

    And I have to admit that her song has worn down my resistance, and I’m starting to like it. {GASP}

    • alyce1213

Me too, against my will.  But it’s not too bad, you know.  Very catchy and musical.

      • MajorBedhead

It’s a perfect pop song, catchy, nice bridge, innocuous lyrics, get stuck in your head with alarming regularity. Even though I’m not a huge pop music fan, I hear it constantly, what with all the short drunk people in my house, and this one I’ve yet to tire of.

Don’t ask me about that damned Gotye song, though.

        • alyce1213

          “that damned Gotye song”

          • l v

I have SUCH immense hatred for that damn Gotye song. Thinking about it makes me cringe!

        • turtleemily

For me, it’s “We Are Young” that I’d be perfectly happy to never hear again.

          • Conner Emery

Whenever that comes on, I always wish I was listening to Love is a Battlefield instead.

    • SapphoPoet

Yeah, I’m not into pop, but it’s very catchy with a good tune. And the video is all kinds of cute.

  • afabulous50

Check Cookie Monster’s (of Sesame Street) remake of her song – both adorable & hilarious – on You Tube.

    • DeborahJozayt

But me like COOKIES! So share it, maybe?

  • kimmeister

She looks like a brunette Taylor Swift.

    • Allyson Wells

YES I was racking my brain trying to think who she looks like, and that’s it- Taylor with brown hair!

    • lchopalong

Haha. I should read the comments before putting my own out there.

  • Le_Sigh

Oh thank god, she’s not dressed like a tweenage Disney pop princess fetus! Love that cover shot.

  • Kiltdntiltd

    Loving her hair!
And the green dress is terrific.
The coque feather dress is impractical as hell, but great looking.

  • Eva_baby

Really good cover.  I like hers better than the InStyle J.Lo. one.

  • call_me_schmeg

disco ball harness vest? a MUST for pop tarts everywhere. go on with your feathered, spangled self, lil miss jepsen!

  • Trisha26

What is with her and the squatting poses? First for that won’t go away Maybe song and now this?

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I get the feeling they don’t know what to do with her because she’s not super curvy. I just wish she didn’t have to be.

  • jenno1013

I can’t support the eye makeup.  The heavy shadow/mascara under her eyes draws too much of a line across her long face.  Or maybe it’s the fair skin.  When Cathy Cambridge wears this much liner, I don’t twitch, but Carly’s raccoon eyes don’t work for me somehow.  But great dress and shoes and her song is a pop jewel.

  • lchopalong

    Edgy Taylor Swift.

  • mjude

    very cute.

  • butterflysunita

I do love the dress and shoes together in the cover shot.

    • SewingSiren

      Me too.

  • Apocalipstick Now Redux

    Jessica Biel’s younger, prettier sister.

  • Ceur

    Daisy Lowe’s baby sister.

  • MilaXX

    Love the feather dress.

  • JulieJ

I don’t know.  To me she looks very, for lack of a better description, vacant on that cover.

  • Monabel

If I had the feather dress, I COULD sing the role of Papagena!

  • leftcoastpickle

She needs a “smize” lesson, she’s looking all “dead in the eyes” as Tyra Banks would say. How old is she? She looks about fourteen to me.

    • BerlinerNYC

      She’s 26 or so.

  • SapphoPoet

Marvelous cover shot. She should get that green dress.

  • Heather Couch

I think the eyeliner is a bit heavy for her. It looks kind of jarring against her uber-pale skin.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I’m noticing the writing on the cover more than her.  WTF is $130,000 nail polish?   What’s it made of, gold minks from Mars?

    • VictoriaDiNardo

      Yes…but remember, it’s in Canadian dollars!  ;  )

    • NC_Meg

Ok, I had to Google it. It’s just gold (in color, not actual gold) polish but the bottle is encrusted in diamonds. You can get the same thing sans diamonds for $7.80. So the $130K is basically for diamonds. If I’m spending that much on diamonds, they’re sure as hell not going to be on a bottle of nail polish.

  • leave_Blake_alone

LOVE that cover and the black feathered dress picture. If she wants to branch out her look/personality from “cute girl next door” this is a great start.

  • P. Capet

this reminds me a little bit of her pose on the cover of her single, call me maybe.  she’s a cutie.

  • Gabriella M

I hate that song so I have no goodwill for her.

    • charlotte

Thank you! Everybody says it’s catchy, but I can’t stand it.

      • Gabriella M

Catchy in this scenario means simplistic and saccharine. I’m pretty sure the song doesn’t even span an octave.

        • Amelia Logan

I would guess 1.5 octaves, the chorus is higher than the verse.

  • Aaron Laibson

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned that she’s in the same pose as she is on the Call Me Maybe single cover:  Bit of clever cross-promotion there.

  • amanda lynn

oh, that feather dress is so cute!

  • Phyllis Craine

I think the last dress is made with chicken feathers, a breed called an Australorp has those beautiful green-black colors

  • Hildegerd Haugen

  • PhillipWilde

The cover is very pretty, but I am dying for that raven feather dress.
