Rihanna in Monaco

Posted on July 31, 2012

Hmmm. A dilemma for RiRi. How to hit the streets of Monaco looking VERY Monaco, while at the same time looking very Rihanna?

Rihanna in Monte Carlo in a Brood dress paired with a Louis Vuitton bag.

Brood Fall 2012 Collection

That’s how.

It’s not that we love every aspect of this look, but it does all come together rather nicely. We still hate the hair, but we’re resigned to it. And besides, it’ll be something completely different a month from now.

The dress is perhaps a bit overdesigned. The pleats and the askew neckline are a bit much when you pair them with that print. The whole dress looks like it’s twisted on her body somehow. Having said all that, it’s striking as hell and totally Riviera-chic. Loving the jewelry, bag, and sandals. If nothing else, she accessorized well.

I like it. I’d probably accidentally strangle myself trying to wear a dress like that.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I’d trip over that hem and fall flat on my nose.

    • Cathy S

This is exactly what I was thinking. Either strangulation or stepping on the hem and ripping the whole thing off. But it’s pretty.

  • Paigealicious

    Over her.

    • mjude

      thank you!

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

        Count me in too!

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

I’ve been over her since “Pon De Replay”.

    • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

can’t stand her. never have been able to.

    • AudreysMom

was never really in to her, but at least she’s not boring. Oh, and this dress is gorgeous.

  • SewingSiren

Love every bit, except that the tail is dragging on the street.

  • meowing

It may be skewed on her ’cause she’s letting the waist-tab drag on the street.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B3CIEK7XAS3YKAAKFJFMIIKC4I Nacogdoches

that’s what’s bothering me. If she was wearing it like it was meant to be worn, this would look much less twisted and sloppy.

      • lbl

Wonder if she even knows it was meant to be worn a different way.

    • l3icest3r

She’s probably trying to hide those Fred Flintstone feet.

    • MoHub

I think it’s also skewed because she’s walking like a normal human being, and the dress evidently wasn’t designed to allow for that.

  • SpcilK

Love the bag, sandals, and jewerly. Everything else is a twisted mess! The sarong style dress does absolutely nothing for her, except make her look even more Cray, Cray.

  • janetjb

    Love it.
A bonus for me: a fall dress that doesn’t look ridiculous in the summer.

  • kimmeister

    Like the dress.

In the second to last photo, it looks like she has a random third leg sticking out from her side!

  • MilaXX

The only thing I really dislike is the hair, but like you said she’ll be changing it soon

  • petalfrog

I wish she’d left the wrap part seen on the model..

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It essentially looks like she wrapped a sarong around her, but it’s a good look. Blue and white are forever and always one of my favorite color combos.

I like her hair too; just like with Katy Perry, I much prefer the dark hair, even with the shaved sides, over the Crayola colors (no offense to Crayola).

  • Judy_J

I like it, except that the skirt is too long.  It’s a wonder she didn’t trip over it while strolling on the Riviera.

  • Ann Harste

    Hate the see-through bag

    • mariavii

I do as well.  It reminds me of the see through bag I had to use when I worked in a department store.

    • AmandaCathleen

I agree. It may be LV, but it still looks cheap/tacky to me. Too bad, because I really like the rest of the look!

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Yes!  Thank you!  Who wants to spend that kind of money on a bag where everyone can see your business cards and Kleenex and WALLET, for cripes sake!

  • Larkin21

I’m in love with that print. It would be a killer dress with a knee length hem.

    • MoHub

The fabric is definitely doing all the work. I’d love that fabric in a better-shaped dress. However, I do like it long.

  • Sobaika

Disagree wholeheartedly about the dress. It doesn’t look overdesigned, to me it looks more like a sari. It doesn’t fit Ri that well because she didn’t loop the tail around as the model did.

The bag is an awful choice to go with it.

    • butterflysunita

Looks like a sari to me too.  I actually really like it on her.

  • Julie Chase

It all looks sloppy and her hair is horrifying. Just no.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Bed Sheet Chic.

  • librarygrrl64

The dress is lovely, but I HATE see-through bags with the white-hot intensity of 1000 burning suns. They will never not look tacky and cheap to me, no matter what the original price tag was.

    • kittenwithaquip

I think the original price tag makes it that much more offensive to me. “Hey, check out my Louis Vuitton that looks like a Lancome gift with purchase!” That stupid LV logo doesn’t make it tasteful.

      • Sobaika

I’m pretty sure logos of any kind are the opposite of taste.

        • formerlyAnon

Millions disagree, but that’s my gut, as well.

          • Indovina

And how. Millions find logos the point.

But I’m with you two. It seems treyf to me.

      • librarygrrl64

“Lancome gift with purchase.” EXACTLY. Looks like she should be carrying it (filled with a loofah and travel-sized toiletries from Target) to the bathroom down the hall at a B&B, not out in public.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

What happened to the piece that wrapped around the front? Rihanna’s version looks a little shapeless.

  • PinkLemon

    and the nipple ring.

  • joe_tey83

The hair’s really horrible. And, yes, it will probably change to something else next month – something just as horrible.

As least she’s not in hooker wear.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Love it. She looks fresh and summer-y.
I’m not a fan of Louis Vuitton (there, I said it!) and hate how everybody and their mother is running around with these LV logo bags now, but I have to say that this particular bag in this color works beautifully with that dress.

  • Rand Ortega

Since when is wrapping yourself in a giant scarf fashion?

  • nomoreprinces

She looks like she fell in a vat of toile, but it’s a perfect dress if you’re going to be playing hide & go seek in a vintage china shop.

  • mom2ab

Maybe I have been reading too many consipiracy theory blogs- but she has been looking like someone hiding a pregnancy for the last few months.  Nothing wrong with the look but she looks a little tired.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

    Butterhair.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Yawn.   I also can’t help but wonder, again, why there is a see-thru Vuitton bag……isn’t the whole idea that the public is supposed to see what’s ON the bag (as in the logo), and not what’s in it?

  • marilyn

Dress too big.  Purse looks plastic (=cheap), even though I know it’s not.   Colors good for her.  This is more going to the beach with your family (with swimsuit underneath cover-up), than being out and about in Monaco.

  • guest2visits

Not sure. I like the dress, but I think the type of bag and the snake bangle on her arm cheapen the look. I don’t care how much
    they cost.

  • Scarlet39

Rihanna is just one of these celebs that can make even the most expensive garments look decidedly downmarket.

    • bellafigura1

So true, and that’s exactly what I admire about her style, truly. She just takes it and gangsta’s it up or down, completely irreverent, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. But she doesn’t look all “I revere my clothes above all” like those awful K sisters — she OWNS her sh*t. I love that about her.

      • malvernite

same here. she transforms clothing into something for herself, and doesnt give a frig what others want to say. boss girl.

  • alyce1213

Much better on the model, wrapped properly.  She ruins it.
Also, it’s not so much street wear; this is a Cote d’Azure beach or yacht party dress.

  • quiltrx

The dress looks chic on the model–I love the print.  On RiRi, it looks like she was drunk and really loved the tablecloth.

  • AthenaJ

I was just happy to scroll down and see that her hem goes beyond cooch level.

  • Tatiana Luján

The fabric of that dress is lovely, but the shape seems like she wrapped a “pareo” (in Colombia, that’s the way we call the fabric that women use to lay on top of when they are getting a sun tan) on herself. Oh, and if she only applied her her some drops of anti-frizz serum. Plus, I hate the bag.

  • formerlyAnon

I just can’t get over how she looks prettier and prettier the fewer layers of heavily applied “look” she has plastered on her person.

  • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

Remind me in the morning to burn that bag. Or to give it to my little sister. I don’t want anything that Rihanna owns or has been photographed with.

  • bellafigura1

    LOVE.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I love the print and fabric of the dress, but if this were a Project Runway challenge and I were a judge, I would say, “All you did is take a sarong, sew a strap to it, and wrap it around your model in a way that will ensure she trips and falls on her face.”

Love the sandals. The bag is dumb.

  • sagecreek

I have never understood the concept of the see-through bag, and Vuitton should know better.

    • Tatiana Luján

Vuitton has tacky lines, for the tacky and rich.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I’m actually kind of loving her hair.  It’s getting close to something that looks natural, and I love natural, free hair.  (Sooner or later, my hippie heritage has to show.  It shows in hair.)

  • Vickiefantastico

For the first time, I can say that I really like how she looks! This is beautiful.

  • ballerinawithagun

A little too long but otherwise, I love this. The hair is perfect with this ensemble. Fabulous print.

  • 2ndhandchic

It would be annoying to have paparazzi follow you around all the time, especially on vacation. One of the many reasons I would never want to be a celebrity.

  • jblaked

RiRi needs a nap.  I feel exhausted just looking at her.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

    Grand bed sheet realness
    Expensive purse dangles nigh
    bed head long dress trip

    • Kate Clausen

       Fashion haiku!  More, please.

  • MarissaLG

I like the dress but I HATE the bag- it looks like a Chinatown knock off!

    • sashaychante

I thought the same thing about that bag.  It’s kinda hiddy for a LV…however, sometimes LV is hiddy on purpose.  The sheet dress is disturbingly odd too.  It looks like grandma’s bedspread.

  • littlemac8

OK, How is that a Fall dress?  Things are really out of whack with designers and seasons.  That being said I concur the accessories are great!  The dress is just confusing but the print is light bright and summery seasonal!

  • Trisha26

It looks beautiful on the model but as worn she looks like Mother Teresa.

  • RzYoung

My god, I actually love this look! That dress is beautiful and the colours are amazing on her, she should wear blue more often

  • fursa_saida

The dress looks more coherent in the runway version. I’m not sure exactly how it was altered, but I think it’s contributing to the hasty bedsheet impression.

Girl needs an Uli Herzner in her life.
