Olivia Munn in Carolina Herrera

Posted on July 25, 2012

Tsk. A really great dress paired with some unfortunate accessories choices. Kittens, isn’t that always the way?

Olivia Munn attends screening of ‘The Babymakers’ at the Silent Movie Theatre in LA in a Carolina Herrera dress.

What a great little summer dress. How refreshing to see a star wearing something seasonally appropriate, rather than attempting a holiday party dress in July or a sleeveless cocktail dress in February.

But of course, someone looked at this dress, with its lavender and salmon-colored print, and chose big-ass salmon shoes and a satiny purple clutch. Our disappointment is a bottomless well of despair, poodles.  The clutch we can handle. It looks too formal for the dress, but whatevs. It’s not a deal-breaker. But those awful shoes cause us physical pain. Right here. In our sides. A simple pair of elegant black sandals would have kicked all kinds of ass.

But hey, love your earrings, girl.

  • Nice to know that Ms. Herrera can step away from “Gracious Grande Dame” now and again.  This is a terrific dress, which suits her perfectly.  I’m in agreement about those shoes, she should go home, take them off and bludgeon her stylist with them.

  • Knightley

It’s the hair that’s breaking it for me. The shoes are just ugly, although that could be because I hate salmon–color and fish alike.

    • I agree. I could still live with the shoes but the hair. It kills.

    • Sobaika

      Agreed, hair is tragic.

    • christinewithanx

It’s I Just Woke Up or Got Out of the Pool hair. I’m also tired of her doing the smiling over the shoulder pose. She always does that! We get it, you’re pretty, that’s why you are succeeding in Hollywood, stop trying to show us different angles of your pretty. Too many commas, bah.

  • formerlyAnon

That IS a great dress, works well with her shape.

    • AudreysMom

absolutely. There is something about THIS dress, at THIS time on THIS body that is absolute perfection. It helps me ignore the shoes and purse.

  • The shoes are bad, but the hair is tragic.

  • SewingSiren

The dress is just right. The shoes, since they fade into her skin tone somewhat, don’t bug as much as the clutch.

    • Tigrrl

I’m with you, when I cover up the clutch it all looks good. That clutch is just jarring.

  • Judy_S

I like the way she looks. Not perfect maybe but the good outweighs the bad. I am enjoying her in Newsroom.

  • Alisa Rivera

It just occurred to me that the stars wear seasonally inappropriate clothing because they’re promoting the designers’ upcoming lines. The way you can’t get anything but sweaters in department stores in August. I can’t believe I never thought of that before.

  • Hermione_Granger

    That dress is adorable.

  • Relax, TLo! They’re only shoes! Please tell me you care about serious things too.  Love the dress.

    • MilaXX

you do realize this is a fashion blog? Shoes are important here.

      • It’s like asking Paula Deen to care about something more important than butter.

  • Love that dress, and she looks great in it.  Those shoes are just tragic, regardless of the dress.  Quite love the clutch too.

  • VeryClaire

I love it – I think the shoes go great with the dress.

    • PinkLemon

Same. I like the shoes a LOT better than that bridesmaid clutch.

  • Catiline

That’s a fantastic dress, and for some reason I really dig the clutch.  But the shoes are bad on every single level.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

“Our disappointment is a bottomless well of despair, poodles.”  Oh, TLo, I loves ya (and your turn of phrase skills).  Thanks for the early-morning smile!

  • That clutch looks like something you can purchase at a prom store and dye the exact shade of your prom dress.  That clutch is giving me PAIN in my side, TLo.    Jewel tone purple and lavender accent in a dress NEVER match.  Ugh its giving me agida.

  • jmorino08

I don’t hate it, or the shoes. She looks cute.

  • SapphoPoet

My calves hurt looking at those sandals.

  • kolokOlchik

what a beautiful dress.  She looks great in it, but I really wish that she would not do that weird bun on top of her head.  A sleek pony would have been gorgeous

  • gabbilevy

I don’t hate the shoes the way I hate the hair and the clutch. But the dress is awesome.

  • Judy_J

Those shoes are all kinds of hiddy, and I’m not keen on her hairstyle, either.  But the dress is fabulous.

  • BazoDee

I guess I’m in the minority -I don’t like the dress. The neckline makes her look like a linebacker and sort of shapeless. The shoes are dreadful.

  • Urgh, I just assumed that Babymakers was going straight to the direct-to-DVD dungeon. The trailer looks horrible!

  • crash1212

I hate the clutch way more than the shoes, which I think are kinda cute. Love the dress. On a non-fashion note, I was unaware of Ms. Munn except for appearing periodically on the pages of TLo, until Newsroom on which she is very funny.

    • MilaXX

I’ve loved her for bit. She’s another pretty girl geek like Felicia Day. I first saw her on the G4 network and then later on The daily Show.

  • The shoes are awful. The dress is lovely and I don’t mind the clutch. So, basically, I’m in agreement with everyone here.

  • frannyprof

LOVE that dress. Looks like it would be flattering on a variety of shapes, not just the size 0 actress.

  • Introspective

The dress is gorgeous and the shoes are hazardous. Pink hooves are not ever going to be in. EVER.

Eek. Those shoes, I have to pretend to ignore them. I actually like the color of the clutch along with this dress, but I agree with it being a bit formal looking. Not sure how I feel about the pinhead, either. Really cute, otherwise!

  • guest2visits

The shoes are an off color and they’re too enormous and for such a simple little design. Don’t like the clutch either.
Like other posts; I think the bun on top of her head makes the top of the dress too bathing suit-y.
If it were a chignon at the back of her head, or base of the neck, it might look better. Or down.

  • MilaXX

I love it when I access before scrolling down and my critique is the same as TLo’s. Bad is nit the best choice, but it’s the shoes that are totally frakked up.

  • MK03

She’s another one who manages to turn everything she touches into skank.

  • Sara__B

Oh, dear. It must be the 70s girl in me, but I like those shoes. (The hairstyle is the outfit wrecker for me.)

  • unbornfawn

It is a great dress that looks wonderful on her. Don’t like the shoes. The clutch is only OK. And I agree with my fellow bitter kittens that the hair is awful. Can’t see the earrings because of the busy backround.

  • plinkiedoodle

I get it, TLo.  But she looks fab none the less.

  • Cathy S

That’s a lovely dress, but yeah, those shoes are horrible.

  • Dagney

The shoes are very Studio 54.

  • CarolinLA

Why is Olivia Munn a star?  She literally has no talent.

  • l_c_ann

I choose to cheer the designer’s choice of zipper.  Hidden, totally correctly sewn in, and not a butt-ugly exposed black industrial zipper in the back.
    Perhaps the tide has turned.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Olivia Munn is such an obnoxious human being that I am inclined to hate anything she wears.  The shoes are awful but the dress could be cute…on someone I didn’t hate. Fine, it’s cute on her, but I Dream of Jeannie hair was not the way to go.

  • SophieCollier

Ooh, black sandals would have been great.  And something other than that sort of sneery expression.

  • bellafigura1

You are totally right. on.  Great dress, terrible execution.  Love you.

  • Wow. I really love this dress.

  • TieDye64

So pretty, until you get to the salmon clodhoppers.

  • fursa_saida

The earrings are indeed awesome. Grandma chic (and I am not being sarcastic–they remind me of my grandmother’s costume jewelry, in the best way.)

  • Larkin21

That dress is cute enough that I don’t mind the shoes. I do like the clutch. And simply love the dress.

  • sashaychante

The dress is lovely on her.  Kill those clunky, stripper platform shoes…someone…please.

  • quiltrx

That dress is adorable!  Those shoes…well, I’m pretty sure my Barbie had some in the 70s.  I don’t mind the clutch, purple girl that I am.  And her hair looks half-assed.
