Nicole Kidman in Azzedine Alaïa

Posted on July 30, 2012

Much to discuss in the following pictures of Nicole, darlings. We’ll prepare you with an agenda, so you know what to look for:

  1. Her shoes
  2. Her men’s-style watch
  3. Her face.

Nicole Kidman attends the launch of OMEGA House in London in an Azzedine Alaïa dress paired with Manolo Blahnik sandals.

Manolo Blahnik Kahikalow Suede Open Toe Lace-up Sandal

But let’s start with the dress, which is very cute and looks great on her in a simple-chic kinda way. We also think the shoes are adorable and stylish. But we question whether they look good paired with a flared, short skirt like this. Proportionally, this just looks weird. Pair those kickass shoes with some skinny pants and you’d have us applauding, but we don’t think they’re working here.

We’re seeing a lot of ladystars sporting the men’s or men’s-style watch lately. We have no opinion on it except to roll our eyes at the fact that they all started doing it at the same time. We’ve been saying for a couple years now that watches were likely to make a major style comeback at some point once the generation who never grew up needing them reach a certain age and decide they’re retro-cool, like using a filter to make your perfectly acceptable pictures look like they came out of a crappy Polaroid camera in 1977. Don’t even get us started on THAT one.

And finally, Face. Girl, you were doing really good there for a while, letting everything settle down until you started looking normal again. But you’re looking very surprised and wide-eyed here and we hope Katie’s masterful escape over the wall didn’t have you running back to the needle, honey. We’re going to assume you’re just unusually fresh-faced and a little surprised here.

Overall, it’s a chic and sassy look, though. Love the earrings.

I think she looks great.  Actually love the shoes with that dress.

    • AthenaJ

Agreed, I think the shoes give a nice edge, which provides an interesting contrast with the dress (keeps the look from being too simple and cute). I’d wear both pieces if I could afford them, though I think I’d have to be skinny like Nicole for the shoes not to make my legs look like tree trunks.

      • fursa_saida

I agree. She’s pulling this off largely because of her long, insanely good legs. But given that she has those, I think this outfit is great on her.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Love the ring.

  • ghopping

This all looks so mis-matched it’s driving me crazy. The watch doesn’t go with the earrings or the shoes. The shoes don’t go with the dress or the accessories. Her hair doesn’t go with any of it… oh lord

    • halleygee

      Yep.

    • Sobaika

Pretty much. The hair is also wrong, too informal.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

So many things not working here — her hair, her shoes, her face.

    • SapphoPoet

I completely agree with you. The whole look makes me twitchy.

  • marilyn

I’m not liking her hair.  It is too informal for those earrings.  The shoes don’t work either.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Agreed. She’s too severe and mature looking (I don’t mean old) to just pull her hair back with a bobby pin. And the shoes are giving me a headache.

      I do like the watch.

  • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

I want that dress in all the colors.

  • twocee

Amen on the crappy Polaroid trend.

  • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

It didn’t occcur to me to complain about a facejob look so I guess it’s a pretty good one, if it is one.  I thought we were going to complain about the color of her lipstick. :)

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The shoes are way too heavy for that dress. They shift the balance off, something chronic.  I am already hating on the whole watch thing. Nicole’s face is a marvel of nature, or is that determination?

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I think it might be more “nurture” than “nature” at this point.
Men’s watches are too big for men’s wrists, let alone women’s.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Myself I was DEEEE lighted when I could finally jettison my wristwatch.  I have no desire to wear one again.

        • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I hated wearing a watch. I will sometimes see one that I like and then think, no, you have a phone. You will never wear a watch, no matter how cute it is.

The dress is cute, the shoes do not go and she looks like a Stepford wife in the hair and face department.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Stepford wife, describes this perfectly.  She looks like some sort of strange automaton.

  • luciaphile

Shoes do not go with this dress. Kinda love the watch.

  • Bakerlooline

The watch on the wrong hand irks.

    • Anne Clifford

      Maybe she’s left-handed?

      • abfidy

Not to be a total Kidmaniac, but she is a lefty.

    • MilaXX

There’s a right hand for wearing watches? I’m probably doing it wrong then.

    • RebeccaKW

I’m left handed and wear my watch on my right wrist.  I don’t know if Nicole is left or right handed, but I’m pretty sure the only rule for on which wrist to wear the watch is ‘whatever feels comfortable to you.’

  • LongTall_Sally

Love the dress, like the watch.  I agree that the shoes don’t go with the dress.  If she can move her face, she’s doing an awfully good job of hiding it.

  • BazoDee

Totally on point. The shoes are wrong for this dress. But I do love them.
And yes her face looks a little over-treated
The watch – i say if you are going to wear men’s watches -why half ass it – wear a larger than life men’s watch.

    • AthenaJ

Why not wear Flava-Flav’s huge necklace clock as a watch ? :)

  • Judy_S

I can see my daughter, who is 25, working this combination of shoes, dress, and watch. Because she has youth as an excuse for pairing cool shoes with a cool dress irrespective of whether they look good together. But Ms. Kidman looks a bit silly. However, I’ll forgive her the watch because Omega House = Omega Watch co.

    • Vickiefantastico

Yes, this look is way too young for her. I know the goal in Hollywood is to stay ageless, but there comes a point where you’ve got to embrace your age (or at least within ten years of it) and own it! This outfit honestly makes me sad, like she’s trying too hard.

      • LaylaSV

Agreed. With that short flared skirt and the bobby pin in her hair she looks like more Sally Draper’ and less successful, lady star. I’m thinking the shoes were a misguided attempt at cutting the twee.

sidebar: I know it’s silly to mourn her face from Dead Calm or even Days of Thunder – and I am glad her cheeks and lips seemed to have settled, but I’d still rather go and see a movie staring a grown up version of the woman on the left than Kim Basinger Part Duex on the right.

        http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_onX3OU1XJcs/TQULg_PdygI/AAAAAAAAAx8/5uIm3M_kiHg/s1600/nicole-kidman.jpg

  • Griffinqueen

Love those shoes! They have a “boot” feel to them.

Oh and…you could bounce a quarter off that forehead.
“sigh” so sad when a beautiful woman doesn’t feel the beauty.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

There’s something about this that screams Serious Canadian Ice Dancer Fantasy Barbie to me…

  • Jennifer Coleman

Everything you said, Tlo, but her hair is of concern to me. I’m generally pissed off at Nicole because I thought when she came upon the scene in 1980-something in that Dead Calm movie that she had such a distinguished face & it was going to be great to see her age. Of course she was having None Of That and has been hellbent on stopping the clock ever since. Well, to each her own, but that hair with that barrette/bobby pin thingy  is far too ingenue-y for her. It just adds to the general dissonance of the outfit.

    • Sara__B

       Exactly.

    • http://vvatima.livejournal.com/ murt

She generally always wears bobby pins in her hair to help disguise the thinning. I have the same issue unfortunately and do the same thing sometimes.

    • formerlyAnon

      Yes. On all counts.

  • Judy_J

To me, the flared skirt paired with those lace-up sandal/booties gives this look a sort of ice-skater costume vibe.  She would have been better off wearing a different shoe.  Those shoes would look great with a slim pencil skirt.

  • meowing

From “her face,” I thought you might comment on the eyebrows.  Have always thought she looks angry, and the only element that makes me think so is the shape/angle of those brows.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/63F4DF4VDHSF2LPYOSWO5ZHAGU AdrienneD

Totally agree with you, meowing.  (Awesome name btw.).  I have low brows, and I have to be careful not to pluck too high an arch in an attempt to open up my eye area.  I think Nicole is going for a youthful, open-eyed look, but the arch is too dramatic, so she ends up looking hawkeyed, sharp and angryish.

Also, the ironed forehead, again. Makes me so sad.  She is gorgeous, and a great actor, but the lineless forehead turns her into a Stepford wife.

Love the dress, wish I could buy it.  Love the shoes, but barely tolerate them with the dress. Hair is meh. Each accessory is fine, but as someone pointed out before me, none of them go together.  Excluding her face, I’d give this 7/10. The fabulousness of the dress is not accentuated well.

  • gabbilevy

Her hair is a little twee and the shoes are horrifically ugly, to my eye. Love the dress though.

  • Karen Tully

When did she turn into Angry Ann-Margret?

    • dress_up_doll

A-ha-ha-ha-ha! I thought that face looked familiar.

  • crash1212

I love everything about this look – including watch (I’ve always been a watch hound and have about 30 and counting), including shoes AND including face. She looks great.

  • janetjb

    Nothing goes together!

Barrette in the hair always seems young.

  • MilaXX

That outfit is nice, it just  doesn’t “fit” her. By fir I mean personality wise. I could see one of the younger celebs like any of the tween or teens wearing this, I could see someone tiny like Lucy Lui or Jada Pinkett-Smith wearing this, hell if I squinted I think even K Stew could pull this look off. It just doesn’t strike me as a Nicole Kidman look.

As for watches, who knew that would be a thing. I’ve always worn men’s watches because I find them more interesting.

Nicole’s overly injected forehead scares me a bit.

    • Tatiana Luján

And her lips are overly filled.

    • AthenaJ

I like men’s watches too… There was an episode of Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta where a bride wore the watch that belonged to her grandfather before he passed away. It was very sweet.

  • MK03

Scrolldown fug. The shoes just kill the look.

  • Patricia Gillett

Love the dress, love the shoes with another outfit, just not this one. I think they’d kill with a pencil skirt. I could take or leave the watch. Forget the face, she needs an intervention on hair!

  • Tatiana Luján

The hair, the dress lenght, the pairing with those shoes. I think it all looks too juvenile for her age.

  • agentilities

She reminds me of Pam in True Blood

    • AthenaJ

Ooohhh, Nicole would make a great vampire! Now I’m wishing she’d been in Interview With the Vampire instead of crazy ol’ Tom Cruise.

  • SewingSiren

    She’s weird.

  • jmorino08

Totally agree about the shoes. They are great, but don’t go with the dress. As for the watch, I’m all for a big watch but that one’s just ugly,

  • Mod_girl

Forget Nicole, I just REALLY want to go to this Omega House place, sit in those white chairs, and have High Tea/champagne/whatever the hell they’re serving there.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I don’t think the shoes go with the dress, either, but somehow it’s all pulled together and I like it on her. Go figure.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QK3MTAHUVJCMI7DANY6WFCAIUM n a

not one line on that forehead. oh Nicole, hope that Botox doesn’t go rogue in your body!  (ps HATE the shoes with that dress)

  • TheOriginalLulu

Yup, Nicole was a beauty until she put her botox lady on speed dial. Such a shame.
That said, she looks striking here. That color looks gorgeous against her skin and the shape does great things for her. Agreed that the shoes look out of place here.

  • oohsparkley!

I like it all. It looks like she could kick butt.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

“We hope Katie’s masterful escape over the wall didn’t have you running back to the needle, honey” – pure genius. Of course, Katie knew she had to be crafty because of what poor Nicole endured. Hopefully Ms. Holmes will learn the same lesson about messing with a beautiful face from Ms. Kidman.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I like it. The shoes are open enough on the front to keep her legs looking long and lean, and they look breezy rather than “stank-boot”. The man’s watch is a cute and unexpected accessory with this girly-cute outfit. My only criticism might be that the whole look skews a bit young for her, but she looks so pretty I will let it slide (as long as she leaves her lovely visage alone).

ETA: I didn’t notice the earrings before, but they seem a little odd with this look.

  • Snailstsichr

This isn’t her dress. I’d love to see her work these shoes with some other dress.

The watch could be fun, but it doesn’t go with either the dress or shoes. I think the watch is the only thing that goes with her hair, though.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Hate the shoes, but otherwise I think she looks great!

  • mjude

i love nicole but i do not like those shoes & dress together.  i am glad the hem of her dress isnt up to her ass.  it’s all about the eyebrows

  • Beth G

Thank you for calling Instagram the way I see it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

    Great dress.

    And…that’s about it, really.

  • EEKstl

I have been wearing a big ol’ men’s watch for decades, so it is with amusement that I’ve “watch”ed this trend be suddenly au courant.  I’m feeling a bit smug and good about myself for a second.  Okay, done – that was fun!

  • sagecreek

Sorry, Unks. Too bored with La Kidman to even pay attention to this post.

  • unbornfawn

Those shoes look like ass with that dress. I like the watch. A fun alternative to a big bracelet. Her face looks stiff as cement. Girl needs to step away from the botox!
The dress is cute, if not a little too cute for her, a smidgeon longer with strappy sandals and a relaxed face she might have had something there.

  • turtleemily

Those shoes are completely counteracting the point of wearing a shorter skirt – it’s all making her legs look stumpy.

  • reebism

I feel kind of awful saying this, but if you’re going to be Botoxing that thoroughly, you should not wear an accessory that draws attention to the hands. Really. Because her hands are kind of frightening, compared to that face. I fel like there’s some kind of fairy tale about an evil sorceress whose glamour of beauty doesn’t extend to her hands that Nicole is unintentionally homaging.

Between this and the TCA post, all the women of Hollywood are starting to resemble wax figurines, and it’s really creepy. Can’t people just have actual faces again?

    • Spicytomato1

I’m with you on the waxy faces in Hollywood. And this post is the perfect example of how all the work in the world won’t fool anyone into think you’re younger than you are…so many comments point out that the dress and hairstyle are “too young” for her. All that work and yet no one’s buying it. Shame.

  • kittenwithaquip

Regarding her face, I will say that as I age, I find myself doing “crazy eyes” in photos. One eyebrow cocked, eyes open wide (or eyes wide open if I wanted to make some stupid pun based on a film she did with Mini Xenu). I have never gone under the knife (or needle), but goddamn if I can’t stop with the crazy eyes. Every now and then I also narrow my eyes at the same time to look like I’m serving up some wry bon mot, but alas, no. I’m just giving crazy eyes because my already deep-set eyes are aging/sagging at the brow a bit. (42 next week, sigh.)

I didn’t realize the man’s watch was a “thing” right now. I was going to defend it for a minute, because when I was growing up in the ’80s I liked to wear my dad’s big ol’ Timex.

Those shoes just seem like a big ol’ “fuck you, fatties. I have long legs and can work these bitches”. Or maybe I’m taking that a little personally…

  • aimee_parrott

LOL… Katie’s masterful escape over the wall.  It did have that feeling, didn’t it?

  • VicksieDo

Haha, I thought she looked angry~!  For me this was a scroll-down fug because I hate those shoes so much.

  • nannypoo

I’ve been wearing a man’s watch for 20 years. I didn’t know it was a thing. She looks ridiculous. Her face is just scary.

  • formerlyAnon

Love dress and earrings. Like the watch. But I’m from the generation that wore watches. Still do. Nice men’s watches on women, done correctly, is one of the few style affectations of the prep school moneyed set which I like.

Shoes are cute but not right with this dress.

Hair is awful, not because it’s literally bad but because it’s wrong – too carefully artless and comes thisclose to being Too Young. It might actually BE too young, but I just can’t focus long enough to tell because of the strangely accusatory look she’s managing in that oddly smooth and placid-surfaced face.

  • berkeleygirl

I disagree with the face – looks better than she has in ages.  My take is that the swoosh of black eyeliner is what’s making the eyes pop.  Her lips look more normal than they have in years.  I also like the very simple hair.  This outfit seems to be all about the shoes which, the more I look at them, the more they work.

Personally, if I could decorate Ms. Kidman’s boudoir, I’d paper it with shots of Dames Judi and Helen.  Those ladies should be her role models.

  • Daenyx

I love the dress and shoes, but it’s her hair that’s killing it for me.  The dress is youthful by itself; the hair takes the look into juvenile territory.

  • ms_kat

The proportion issue for me is in the dress (and I hate the shoes and her hair, but that’s not the problem).  The fullness of that skirt, the circleness needs a longer hemline.   As it is, the dress just looks like she is wearing a little girl’s dress because it’s hitting her midthigh. On a shorter woman, it wouldn’t be as jarring. But on her with her long legs, it looks like a girl’s dress that her mam put on to see if she could.

  • fungstyle

the men’s watch thing cracks me up because the ladies of corporate america have been on that trend for the last…. three years? to see hollywood following something i’ve observed in the CPG realm for that long is just surreal.

  • guest2visits

The dress is perfect, she looks beautiful in it and I don’t mind the watch, but the shoes have to go, – they’re all wrong for
the dress. And I’m not sure the watch and the earrings are meant to be together either.
I still like wearing watches; I don’t always have a phone or tiny screen in my hands.

  • Judih1

From the neck down I like what she is wearing – just not together. There is a clash of styles between the shoes, dress and wristwatch. And I think that black is too harsh for her pale skin tone.  From the neck up, she looks scary. Her forehead is as smooth as a flat screen tv and her hair is lifeless and flat too. There is more life in Madame Tussad’s museum than what Nicole is exhibiting

  • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

Shoes give her thick ankles n calves…dress “silly short” …she is just a touch passed that age! Watch n hair good…facial a bit stern!

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I think she looks like Amber Heard in these photos. Weird.

  • RzYoung

I dislike this look, I have a compelling hate for the shoes. Also don’t get ME started on the instagram just don’t and UGH watches!! I hate watches! I have always hated watches and this was an Omega event so it’s so obvious she has to wear it, yuck, watches never look good unless they’re like jewellery and so tiny you can’t see the time, which defeats the point. There’s no need for watches.

  • Maddie_Faddenoid

If you look closely at the dress you can see that the cut-out style of the shoes is meant to complement the fabric of the dress. But they still look mismatched.

  • http://twitter.com/Metsis Hanna Metsis

It’s not a mens watch. It’s an Omega Ladymatic. The whole reason she was at this – OMEGA – party was that she is the face of their watches.

Guy’s, you’re great, but do your homework.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

The SHOES look just lovely with the dress. Some of us have ALWAYS worn men’s watches, just because we like them.
    Good work Nicole!

  • Presumptuous Insect

    Shoes are hideous.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

Nicole. Please step to the side. I am loving the room she is in. Got to get those chairs. Ok, I am done. You can step back into the shot Ms. Kidman.

  • Elaine Rodriguez

I worked in the watch industry for 7 years.  That’s not a men’s watch, it’s midsize and therefore unisex.  However, I must say that men are buying watches far bigger than that, and these days would be considered too small for a man.  Women are no longer buying dainty little watches, the watch Nicole is wearing is the new ladies size.

  • http://twitter.com/tartandsweet Tart + Sweet

She looks so pissed off, like she’s ready to pull a To Die For.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I seem to be in the minority, but I hate those “sandals”.  Too heavy by far for the dress, which I love.  My main beef, though, is in what universe can those be described as sandals?  They are suede booties, at the least, despite being open toed with cutouts.   I wish she’d leave her face alone.  She used to be so beautiful.  Now she looks like a Barbie doll or a Stepford wife.  Sad.
