Mila Kunis for ELLE UK

Posted on July 10, 2012

Here are some very pretty pictures of very pretty Mila wearing very pretty dresses. Now watch us criticize.

Mila Kunis covers the latest issue of ELLE UK magazine photographed by Doug Inglish and styled by Leith Clark. Hair: Luke Hersheson. Makeup: Tracey Levy.

Actually, it’s not a criticism; just an observation. You see, while we wouldn’t call ourselves PhD-level when it comes to Mila style knowledge, we think we’re at least at a Master’s level, having featured her on the site here for many years and dozens of times. And our Mila education is telling us that “big-haired sex kitten” isn’t the best use of her looks. She’s obviously beautiful and can do sexy just fine, but looking over her past editorials, it seems to us that what she’s really good at is a sort of exotic romanticism (examples one, two, three, and four; even a sexed-up editorial with Justin Timberlake had her working more of an Audrey vibe than a Bardot one). We can certainly understand why a stylist would want to stretch the boundaries a little instead of repeating the same old look, so we have no problem with this one. Like we said, it’s pretty pictures of a pretty lady wearing pretty dresses. But it’s definitely a stretch for her.

These pictures are lovely.  They just don’t seem like they tried very hard.  The direction seemed to be ‘emphasize her eyes, give her a bump-it and let’s get on with it!’  She looks good, like I said, it just seems a waste.  They could’ve done so much more.

I love that D&G dress, but that Dior is all kinds of ugly.

    • http://www.facebook.com/shreya.aren Shreya Aren

I feel like in the other spreads, it seems like they put a lot of effort but she sort of absorbed it and converted it into an effortless vibe. In this spread, the work shows very crudely and it just ends up looking sloppy and weird. Also, the one side parting poufy hair style really does not suit her!

      • http://twitter.com/JuanaGilder Juana Gilder

Was shocked to scroll down and see it was a Stella McCartney and it’s adorable. What is the world coming to?..MayorMoney.blogspot.com

      • RebeccaKW

Yes, it’s just her lying on the floor.  Or lounging in a chair.  No effort.  I don’t mind the side part on the cover, but the one on the floor-it looks like she fell and her hair flopped over.

        • Little_Olive

And hurt her knee and is trying to cover the embarrassment.

  • judybrowni

mila makes the dresses work, not so much the models

  • clatie

I love her.  But in these pictures she looks more tired and grumpy than sexy.  We know you better, MK!  Have a non fat latte, a siesta and come back.  We’ll be here.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I think something may be very very wrong with me. I actually like a Stella McCartney dress. (reaching for thermometer)

    • curiouserandcuriousest

I like it on HER, but I’m still telling myself she has slumped to the ground in despair at having to wear it. Still, none of these dresses are particularly great.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yeah, I can’t say any of them are sending me over the moon. The Stella, though is inoffensive, for once.

      • Little_Olive

Totally. Come to think of it, I don’t like any of them.

But hey! Casual sex is back!! I’m so glad, I’m over the committed relationship sex just as the silly putty pumps.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Back? I hadn’t noticed it ever left.

          • Little_Olive

Well, if Elle says it’s back we must assume we’ve been sexual hispters all this time :p

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

I swear, I had the same exact thought. Was shocked to scroll down and see it was a Stella McCartney and it’s adorable. What is the world coming to?

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I truly shudder to consider it.

    • schadenfreudelicious

i don’t hate it either which shocks me…however are those pompoms around the neckline?…

      • Lori

This. I was feeling a bit faint from the shock of thinking a Stella McCartney dress was cute and then I realized that it’s cute on MK because in that pic it’s hard to see that the trim on the neckline is totally idiotic.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I can’t quite make it out on my phone. Maybe so, but it’s kinda cute. (gasping slightly)

    • formerlyAnon

I like it on her. Might be, in part, because the pose obscures the awkwardness of the neckline. Also, she’s wearing the hair of the era associated with the shape of the dress in my mind.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

It’s best in show here.  So who knows what that means.  The shoes make her feet look like clodhoppers in that pose, however.  Also, my carpet never looks that good.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I know! I would never consent to being photographed on my living room carpet. Besides, it’s apartment beige.

    • another_laura

You know, I’m really over the Stella McCartney electric blue phase, but this dress is cute on her, for sure.

    • charlotte

I think part of the deal why it works quite well on her is that the dress has a Russian vibe going on…and Mila is of Ukrainian descent, am I right?

    • Celandine1

It was driving me crazy because I knew we had seen this dress before
on the site and I couldn’t remember who wore it and had to search until I found it. Charlize Theron wore a
version of it and was voted OUT by the BK’s, although mostly for the
styling. I think we were all shocked that it was a Stella McCartney that was simple and chic and we didn’t all hate it immediately on sight.I think it’s a pretty cute dress.

      http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2012/04/in-or-out-charlize-theron-in-stella-mccartney.html

    • Celandine1

Hmmm my comment didn’t post so I will try again. I had to search to find where we had seen the Stella McCartney dress before, the BK’s voted Charlize Theron out back in April while wearing a version of that dress with the print on the skirt. It was voted out, however, mostly for the lack of styling. I think we were all shocked that we didn’t hate a Stella McCartney dress immediately on sight. It’s a really cute dress.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

      i. too. was stunned that i actually loved the mc cartney dress and the pumps are divine.  the hair on her, however, is beyond ridiculous.   sorry, just not buying the overall look of the shoot.

  • antheapena

you are so fabulously critique-able, she reminds me of mad-men-meghan in the blue on the floor, plus rolls the same expression in each. One of the Bardot-esque pics would have been enough then something else/ Maybe the stylist went home early? having said that she’s amazingly gorgeous & I adore every one

  • Pants_are_a_must

Not every petite lady needs to do this kind of look, just like not every be-boobed lady needs to do the Marilyn Monroe look.

Mila is beautiful, but this is not selling the clothes or her.

    Magazines never learn, do they.

  • Amy Walter-Peterson

    I want the blue pumps.

  • Clueless_Jock

Flawless, as far as I’m concerned.

  • http://red.filmsbyneptune.com/ Dani Colman

I’m not convinced by any of these.  I feel like the stylist tried to dress her for her Black Swan figure, but she’s got her curves back (and, according to her at least, not in the same places she used to have them).  She’s a beautiful girl at any size, but I don’t think any of these are the right dresses for her.

  • mshesterp

What I noticed looking back on your links is that she has fairly limited range in her “sexy face” poses (these included), and I think she looks the best in the Timberlake shoot, where they have mad chemistry (in the shoot and in that movie too, which was actually really cute.)  So I think photographers need to give her more range to work with instead of just “sultry pose.”  That might have worked a little better with the 60s hair, but I see what you’re saying.  She’s better with edgier gear/styling than with this.

Still, I think the cover shot is quite striking.

  • Sobaika

Meh. She’s too teeny for the big hair, gives her a bobble-head effect.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

agreed, that hair is beyond hidious on her.  in other, news (and speaking of bobble heads) has anyone checked out the doll ad to the left of the post?  i admit i may click on it, but haven’t yet.  intriguing, and so appropriate….

      • Sobaika

We don’t all see the same ads – it’s based on one’s cookies I think. But now I’m curious about this doll.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

and speaking of bobbleheads, has anyone checked out the doll ad to the left of mila’s head?  so appropriately placed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1314915676 Harvard Bridges

    DA-YUM.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    she looks a bit…sedated

    • lovelyivy

       Agreed. Very “Mommy’s Little Helpers”.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

    This screams Mad Men

  • kimmeister

Her facial expression in the Dior looks murderous.

I don’t mind the big hair on her except for in the shot where she’s sitting on the floor.  It’s parted way too far to the side.

  • http://twitter.com/starlounging Ann M. Erickson

She looks like a bored trophy wife. But beautiful.

  • In_Stitches

The cover is straight Bardot, but the inside shots read more Twiggy to me and I think that’s a point of reference that can really work for her, playing up her giant eyes and lean limbs.  Plus, when modeling she really has that Twiggy je ne sais quoi, the light behind the eyes.

  • kathryn_dc

She has a short neck (like me!) and all those high collars and big hair are doing it no favors! The cover is the best shot of all.

  • Jessi03

Just looking at the headline that says “Casual Sex is Back!”  Where did it go?  Have I been ahead or behind the trend?  Quel horror!

    • AthenaJ

Wait, does that mean the walk of shame is back too?

      • Jessi03

I prefer to call it the “Stride of Pride.”  :D  (credit to the Sims for that one)

  • christinewithanx

She looks sleepy. Or bored. Or high. Maybe all three? But it’s ho-hum for me.

    • understateddiva

       I’m getting “world-weary”.  Doesn’t suit her.

  • Call me Bee

    I agree.
Beautiful photos, and she’s a lovely girl, but with her physical tiny-ness and her so girl-next-door image, I can’t see her as a sex-kitten.   Even the clothes she’s in have a sweetness to them.
    Not sexy at all!

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

it could be that her facial expression is left over from her role on that seventies show.  jail bait!

  • Lilithcat

I think I saw that a Stella McCartney dress a couple of decades ago  .   .   .  at the Winter Olympics.

  • formerlyAnon

She is making both the McCartney & the D&G dresses look better than they do on the models. I like the cover dress best, would like it more if the bodice were more constructed & lacking the cavernous gap between the breasts that goes all the way down to the high waist. (can I be said to like the dress with all those caveats? I think so . . .). The Dior is less ugly on her than the model, but mostly, I think, because they are showing less of it.

She does the sultry 60s sex kitten big eyes & hair well, but I agree it’s not her best look.

  • quiltrx

    Great dresses, nice pictures.

But honey, send that facial expression back to Fiona Apple in the 90s.

  • miagain

    PEPLUMS..How you wear one.
    I am breathless…

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

and how to have the best hair of your life…how do they know what kind of life my hair has had?  are they spying on me?

  • MilaXX

I like how she makes me forget how tiny she really is. Somebody us doing something right in her styling,

  • Le_Sigh

I thought: sexually dissatisfied stepford wife.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She’s gorgeous, and she looks good in that style, but she’s not particularly selling the look. For such a sultry and sexy hair and clothing, she doesn’t look… well, sultry and sexy. She looks a little pouty and moody. Still, she’s better than the average actress in an editorial.

  • EEKstl

I love her and she looks great here.  I am actually going to show these shots to my colorist – golden highlights on darker hair is hard to do well, and these are done to perfection.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QK3MTAHUVJCMI7DANY6WFCAIUM n a

I’m getting a sexed up Margo Thomas vibe.  I feel like all her pictorials want to make her look like some past beauty.  I think she is so beautiful in her own right- why not find a new look for her or work on developing a look that is ALL Mila?

  • Aurumgirl

Oh, I see why the blue dress is shocking everyone–on Mila, they removed the (I’m going to use the 60′s terminology here) deedly balls around the neckline so the dress isn’t so off-putting.  And the shoes Mila is wearing to go with it are so much nicer.

  • jmorino08

Outisde of the cover photo, she has such a blank look on her face! Also… CLOSE YOUR MOUTH!

  • granddelusion

I didn’t know casual sex ever went away. And those Stella McCartney shoes are butt-ugly.

  • GypsyHowell

A little bit of a Jean Shrimpton vibe. I like it.

  • cam_lo

She looks like she’s Carey Mulligan dressed up as Mila Kunis, but in a bad way.

  • j_anson

To me these just look a little too on the nose. It looks like an editorial from the sixties, not an editorial referencing the sixties. But what do I know?

  • CatherineRhodes

This Bardot look really works due to Mila’s voluptuous facial features. I like it all.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Isn’t “big haired sex kitten” exactly the look she had on That 70s Show?

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

      i see the resemblance.

  • Timothy Scott

    Jean Shrimpton she’s not.

  • reebism

She looks so incredibly bored by this shoot. I hear you, Mila.

  • guest2visits

I think this works for her, she’s got great hair that can be worn a multiple of ways.
One of her best hair moments is with Timberlake; with a puffy, messy up-do.

  • bluefish

Oh to have been young and cashed-up enough to have worn that last D&G dress with those little lace socks and those shoes …

MK is a beautiful and exotic looking bird but she looks cheap in these photos — Way too much hair going on — Patty Duke in Valley of the Dolls.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

and check out the ad for the dolls right next to her head.  coincidence?  i think not.

  • frankystein123

It’t not horrible, but Ms. Kunis in those getups just seem off to me.

  • cleep1000

I know she’s a tiny little thing, but the big hair for some reason just emphasizes her smallness. And not in a good way.

  • minnye

The cover would catch my eye at the newsstand. I love the styling inside, but she’s sleepwalking through it.

  • dickylarue

Sorry guys. This is very Mrs. Robinson and I like it. She’s going to be a sizzling hot cougar someday.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

      she looks like one already.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

so many similarities to the Emma Stone shoot…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Looking at it, I was surprised by how well she rocked the 60′s Bardot look. That D&G should be burned.
