Katy Perry in Marchesa

Posted on July 05, 2012

It’s another beautiful day here on Fire Island, so we don’t see the point in beating around the bush. Because who has time for vagueness when the sun is calling you, darlings? No one; that’s who.

Our take on Katy’s look here is very simple.

Katy Perry attends the UK premiere of “Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D” in a Marchesa dress paired with Jimmy Choo bejeweled sandals.

Marchesa Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Siri Tollerød

Jimmy Choo ‘Lauren’ Sandal

Namely: If Marchesa could refrain from making every dress look like a shower puff, this might have been flawless. Hair, makeup and shoes are all perfect. Unfortunately, her cooch and tits are exploding in a shower of puffery and now we can’t snap our fingers and yell “WERQ” at her. Let that be a lesson to you all, kittens. You could be going through life receiving praise and hosannas wherever you go, if only your tits and cooch would stop exploding all over the place.

Wise words. True story.

Totally agree on the dress.  But it’s a WERQ for me.  I think WERQ means YOU are working the look – and Katy’s bringing it with perfect styling and accessories.  If the dress makes it too easy, it can still be a werq, but you don’t have to work so hard.  Does that make sense??

      • Kayceed

Yes, especially because in the case of Katy Perry, exploding lady bits is standard MO, no?

        • Jill_3

I agree, especially since I totally empathize. My cooch and tits frequently explode all over the place, and it’s caused me much grief.

I think she looks adorable. A little silly, but in a Katy Perry-appropriate sort of way…and adorable...MayorMoney.blogspot.com

      • Jill Roberts

Makes total sense.  She looks amazing, and equally awesomely when it WERQs, she looks like herself.  J’adore.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

It’s a WERQ for me as well. She looks fantastic and she makes the exploding lady parts work, as only Ms. Perry could.

      • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

I think she looks adorable. A little silly, but in a Katy Perry-appropriate sort of way…and adorable.

    • frappefest

She looks a bit like Nicole Kidman in the close-up picture of her face. Serving up some Cleopatra fierce :)

      • NC_Meg

Yes! Nicole Kidman. I was trying to figure out who she’s channeling there.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

I was absolutely thinking the same thing. Nicole’s darker happy kooky little sis!

    • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

All I see is Vegas Showgirl, even if she does look great in the face

    • sherrietee

The shoes would indeed be awesome if they actually fit her foot.

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

Exploding Cooch. Band name. Called it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

I’d go see your show just on principle.

      • jenno1013

Featuring as their opening act, Tit Frippery.

        • formerlyAnon

           Tit Frippery. Genius.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/_MXMBFH24AF6XT6WT72VM6MSGGY Naima

ridiculous. it looks like her vagina just farted.

      • Ogden1990

        Katy varted. Terrible word, sorry.

    • ninjac

Wait. Is that a Union Jack ring? I want it.

      • cmb92191

Looks like it.  But it is the UK premiere.

      • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

Wow, you have an eagle eye or a much larger screen than I’m working with.  I had to zoom like crazy but that ring is fantastic. I have a Union Jack fixation and my pride and joy is a Mary Quant Union Jack raincoat I happened along one day and had to buy.

        • ninjac

I have become a crazy Anglophile the past couple of years and can spot a Union Jack at 100 paces :) That raincoat sounds fantastic. Do you wear it regularly or only for special occasions?

          • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

I wear it an time I can. As such it’s gotten a bit worn but I won’t give it up. It totally brightens up rainy days.
Great catch on that ring. I want it too now.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1314255041 Irina Ryabchuk

      I love her pedicure!

    • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

Have to agree with you. Normally I like dresses and hate styling, but this time it’s the exact opposite. The dress looks like a drum major on crack.

      • AudreysMom

I kind of got a trapeze artist vibe, but we’re on the same wavelength.

        • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

haha if she flips upside down in that, THAT is when the show starts!

    • formerlyAnon

She IS a work of art, here. Too bad about the excessive tulle.

    • formerlyAnon

P.s. T & Lo, f you MUST post on vacation, I’m thinking it’s a whiteboard kind of day, no?  You deserve to relax, to slack, to play.

    • Funkykatt

I think she looks adorable and the dress suits her, it’s fun and nutty, just like the wearer.

    • Jangle57

She looks amazing – except for that dress.  If the tulle at least laid flat and didn’t stick up like a bunny tail in the front, I might have been able to forgive it

      • CozyCat

Yep, you’ve got it exactly.  It’s just a tulle too far….

    • Whever

Have y’all SEEN her ‘Firework’ video? Katy here is no stranger to the exploding tits phenomenon.

    • Sobaika

      • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

Aren’t they the best? I’m a 5 1/2, maybe we can share them! Seriously, it’s so refreshing to see gorgeous shoes on the red carpet that I can almost forgive the tulle explosions. Maybe it was referential to the 4th of July? Not likely. It’s just Marchesa.

        • Sobaika

That’s my size too! $2,500 isn’t too bad when split, right?

          • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

Wow. We’re so lucky. Just a mortgage or a half a pair of killer shoes. Mmmm. Let me think on that one a bit. :-)

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Overall, she seems to be doing a much better job of getting it right more often.  Sure, this dress is typical Marchesa cray cray, but she is indeed WERQing it like mad.

    • afabulous50

Its a WERQ for me – she looks fantastic.

    • Catiline

I kind of… love it?  Exploding cooch and all?  It’s one of the first KP looks in a long time that hasn’t given me even the tiniest urge to roll my eyes.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CBJGITXG2PYJPHPGG7DUTNCQXA Erin

Oh, come on.  If anybody can rock the exploding tits/cooch frippery, it’s Katy Perry.  I’d give it a WERQ.

    • poggi

I think if your red carpet includes a giant ice cream sundae and 6 foot lollipops, you can get away with this look.

    • Hermione_Granger

She looks like the ballerina inside a music box.

      • FlamingJune1967

I’m glad I read the comments first because this is exactly what I was going to say!

    • Judy_S

To my mind, this is a WERQ, meaning that she took a ridiculous dress and made it, um, work for her and for the occasion. Or perhaps there should be a different category for this type of look: QERQ?

    • phrenk

This is the only place I ever see her face and I am still sick of seeing her face.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

“Cooch and tits exploding in a shower of puffery”… HAHAHAHAHA!!

I think the dress looks great – on her. It’s a little whimsical and princess-y/ballerina-y, and because it’s Katy Perry, it works.

    • lonepear

Gorgeous shoes, although I don’t think my feet would last 5 minutes in them.

    • MilaXX

I’d even give her a pass for having exploding tits if the cooch and booty weren’t exploding tulle as well. Otherwise this is a great look on Katy.

    • Larkin21

Yup, I was thinking the same thing. Love the hair, make-up, and shoes. Shame about the oddly fluffy dress.

    • janetjb

Katy is totally WERQing that nonsense!

    • Judy_J

Cute shoes.  Unfortunate dress. Jennifer Lawrence should have worn those shoes with that cute dress she was sporting in a previous post.

    • bluefish

She’s doing a Dita von Teese.  Except that Dita has better taste in clothing.  Still, I think she looks very cute.  Marchesa equals tacky to me almost always but this one, shorter and almost cartoonish, suits Katy well and I love the shoes, hair, make-up — and her attitude — She seems to be in on the joke.

    • IAmJ

The hair, make-up and shoes are indeed perfect. The dress is way too reminiscent of poultry.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Marchesa seems unable to design dresses without overgilding or overpleating the lily, so to speak-but I do love those Jimmy Choo sandals!

    • shawnhunter

Wow. I am completely in love with this look. She looks amazing.

      • Sara__B

My inner five-year-old (who is a princess ballerina superhero) would dress like this all the time. Fun and sparkly and feminine, but with wildly expensive designer clothes beautifully constructed from gorgeous fabrics. (I think she looks amazing, too.)

    • BobStPaul

Atrocious dress plus her make-up is way over-done.  If this were an in or out post, I’d definitely vote out.

      • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

Yeah.  The make-up is way too heavy and dark for a white dress.  Looks like a vampire from the neck up.

    • crash1212

Looks like they took all the poof from the model’s breastal/shoulder area and put in in the coochal area on Katie. A little de-poofing and this would be killer…of course, that could be said about most of what Marchesa designs. Poofs-R-Us. Those shoes are exquisite – seems that Jimmy Choo has been knocking it out of the park lately.

    • petalfrog

I actually love it on her.

    • ballerinawithagun

I love the “tit” area. Hate the exploding “cooch” are. A pencil straight extension of the gold braid with just a slight amount of ruffle pouf at the bottom right above the knee would have been my design choice.

    • NurseEllen

The shoes are perfect, although I’d hate to see what her feet look like when she takes the shoes off…..parallel indentations can’t be good.  Why polka dot toenails?  And since she had the good sense to remove 90% of the tulle from the bustline, she should have gone all the way and taken the rest, too.  The hemline is hopeless, though.  Still, overall, she looks really happy, really fab, and really eye catching!  She is WERQ-ing a flawed dress, for sure.

    • quiltrx

Her hair and makeup look gorgeous.  Something about this outfit reminds me of the twirling ballerina inside the jewelry box all of us gals of a certain age once had!

I don’t even mind the tit pouf, but the exploding cooter bit is just too much…and I generally like Marchesa.  They must get a hell of a deal on tulle in bulk!

    • quiltrx

Forgot to say those shoes are fabulous!!!

    • MzzPants

Well, I think she looks like a million damn dollars.  This is a great representation of her image and more sophisticated than her normal circus-wear.  Have another holiday drink, boys.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura
    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

      HA HA HA
Ice skater mashed with drumline majorette! This dress makes me think of the roller skating number (roller skate rag) from Funny Girl. For all you people claiming to be tired of Katie Holmes: I AM SO OVER KATIE.

    • EEKstl

FIRE ISLAND!  You guys!!  Are you having so much fun?? Of course you are!! I miss the South Shore of Long Island, my neck of the woods growing up and before I was transplanted to the midwest.  Sigh.  Now, on to Katy:  While I realize it’s part of her contract to show maximum boobage at all times she would have bordered on WERQ here if she’d worn the model version of the dress, those little tulle wisps looks silly. I still wouldn’t have loved the dress, but she would have been wearing it to maximum capacity.

    • nannypoo

This is Katie Perry we’re talking about here. Different rules apply. I think she looks fabulous, and the dress is perfect for her.

    • kirkyo

Best she’s ever looked. Honestly, at first glance I thought this was Marion Cotillard, which is in my book the highest of compliments.

    • AmandaCathleen

I really like the detailing on the straps here, but the puffs ruin it for me as well. Now it just looks like a costume for a children’s dance recital (albeit a very expensive costume no doubt.)

    • MK03

Aww, it’s My Skanky Ballerina! I loved that doll when I was a kid!

    • guest2visits

Only Katy Perry’s mega beauty could save this mess of a dress. This is a contorted ballarina-meets-gladiator-toga piece of
ridiculousness that dosn’t even look right on the model. However; it is another costume that Katy manages to wear very well.

    • Le_Sigh

I do love how they defluffed the tits from the runway version so Katy could show off her girls.

    • SpcilK

      She still looks great!

    • http://twitter.com/BrerAndy Andy Morris

The sleek, slicked back ice-bitch styling is working really well, which is why a sleek ice-bitch dress would have worked perfectly, instead of this Queen Frostine effort.
Still probably my favourite hair/makeup on her.

    • Joey Melliza

but it’s really kind of werq-ing —- good thing she had a pair of scissors on hand when she got the dress

    • Alisa Rivera

Katy can indeed WERQ some crazy shit, but this dress isn’t crazy, just overworked and fussy. From the neck up she’s stunning but the dress is just fug, and not even interesting fug.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

“And as I looked in her eyes…  her pussy exploded.”  –  Margaret Cho

    • kimmeister

I guess I’m alone in disliking all of Jimmy Choo’s recent sandal offerings, that all have like 37 rows of straps going all the way up the ankle.

      • Alisa Rivera

        No, you’re not.

    • Dagney

      THAT is a WERQ.  in.

    • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

I looked at that dress and flashed back to Dick Button yelling something like:  “SHE HIT THE TRIPLE TOE LOOP FOLLOWED BY A TRIPLE LUTZ!”

However, agree with everyone who thinks that her hair & makeup are gorgeous.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Dick Button! Isn’t that what a man used to close his fly before zippers were invented?

I loved Dick Button. He and Peggy were a great team.

    • Lisa Dugan

She looks stunning.  Her hair and makeup are gorgeous and those shoes are beautiful.  I love the colors, pattern, and idea of the dress but too much poofery!

    • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

      I think she looks good.

    • mozzer0906

Typical Marchesa, but those shoes are fabulous.  The hair and makup are great too.

    • tonibaloney

She’s a dead ringer for Emily Blunt in the close-up! Funny, never saw a resemblance before.

    • http://red.filmsbyneptune.com/ Dani Colman

I don’t mind the tit-puffs so much – I think without them her actual tits might be exploding out of the dress instead – but I hate the mullet cooch ruffle.  Those three words shouldn’t exist at all, much less grouped together in the same dress description and *not* directly preceded by “I’m glad she’s not wearing a…”

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

    • sagecreek

Don’t like Katie Perry and hate Marchesa, but this is not so bad.

    • ccm800

Did we ever hear Marcheesy Chapman utter any reference to “learning how to edit” or “too many ideas going on” to a contestant?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It seems that the only idea behind most of Marchesa dresses is “gigantic impractical ruffles everywhere”.

    • DCSheehan

J’love the shoes and her hair. Everything in between is silly, bordering on clownish.

    • Joanie Hunt

Seeing Katy in these photos makes me wish SHE were playing LIz Taylor instead of the Lohan.

      • Maddie Meyers

        you are brilliant.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

That is the dumbest dress. I haven’t seen anything that dumb since you featured the last Marchesa dress. sigh….I am sure you boys are tired of us being tired of Marchesa. sorry.

    • SophieCollier

Pfft.  It’s fun in a crazy ballerina way.  I like it and think it WERQs just fine as-is.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

      the shoes are gorgeous.
the rest of it is okay.

the real issue is here is why in heavens name does anyone want or need a documentary about this person? really really really really &, while we’re at it? truly too. she doesnt annoy me as much as she did before i understood how nuts her family is not to mention that i predicted her divorce at first meet. but, okay, if theres anything i sadly understand it’s choosing the wrong person & not being able to make it, as someone once said, work.

otoh: her family is just not crazy enough, her marriage neither long nor important nor intense nor even starstruck enough, her work is a joke, her career impossible in just about any other age. yet here we are. a documentary about paris hilton, even, would be more compelling–at least you’d have a mad family dynasty in that, one which includes gabors. here you dont have much of anything.

      as for marchesa:
were she somehow somewhere where this was possible, i bet the eventually park-living person for whom the line was named initially was entranced & enchanted that someone would name a label for her; eventually, though–right around the time of kristen [vampire girl whose last name suddenly escapes me] & her wretched crematorium dress–i imagine she decided to take up that e’erpresent e’erpossible bbq spit & begin, just like so many of us, twirling in her grave.

    • VioletFem

Her makeup makes her look a little bit like Marion Cotillard.

    • TieDye64

The frou frou on this is ridiculous, but other than that she looks amazing.

    • PaulaBerman

I might go out on a limb and say that, the way Dita von Teese can pull off the head to toe matchy looks, Katy Perry can pull off ridiculous frou frou. She’s practically an anime character.

    • TomBord

      wanna be stars on ice-ish.

Looks like she has a hard on?

    • finnishmaria

I think her makeup is ageing… but I also feel like it would be strangely appropriate for Lady GaGa.

    • redgauntlet

She looks like a cheap magician’s cheap assistant.

Holy shit I LOVE THIS.  Normally this gal looks like she’s trying WAAAAAAY too hard to seem blasé about the opinions of others on her getups, but here she looks absolutely lovely and comfortable.  I’ll give her hands down a WERQ, despite the PTA showerpuff explosion.  Those shoes trump excess tulle.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

She looks lovely, and while that dress is pretty much an overpriced skating costume, it does work for her, and she is working the hell out of it.

I always love TLo’s description of Marchesa-that every dress looks like a “folded napkin”! LOL!!  And now I’m gong to think of a girl’s “tits & cooch exploding” when I see their dresses-thanks, guys!!
