Judging the Judges: Week 2

Posted on July 27, 2012

Guest judge Dylan Lauren, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors and Heidi Klum from the second challenge of Project Runway season 10.

Heidi Klum in Elizabeth and James

Elizabeth and James Snake-Print Nuri Pants

Elizabeth and James Snake ‘Sabine’ Top

Oh come on, girl. We don’t think either piece is terrible, but they really shouldn’t be worn together like that. You could pair a chic top with those pants or chic pants with that top and make an outfit that works. But when you wear them together, they look like pajamas. We’re all for Heidi’s comfort and maybe she’s trying to dress more demurely, but honey, this is not the way.

This Week’s Score: 2/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 2.5/5

Dylan Lauren in Ralph Lauren Black Label

Ralph Lauren Black Label ‘Taylor’ Long Jersey Dress

That’s an awful lot of skirt for an outfit where you’ll be shot seated, but this was a really good choice for her. Of course she was going to sport her father’s wares. But she chose something brightly candy-colored, which suits her well, and draws the eye to her. Nicely done.

This Week’s Score: 4/5

Previous Guest Judge Scores:
Lauren Graham:4/5
Pat Field: 4/5

Nina Garcia in Balmain

Balmain Resort 2012 Collection

Once again, La Nina BRINGS IT. That jacket kicks every kind of ass and the simple black pants were exactly the right way to go. Bottom it off with a pair of killer pumps and she looks every inch the public’s idea of a fashion editor. A perfect television outfit, perfectly suited to her.

This Week’s Score: 5/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 4.5/5

You best step it up, Miss Heidi. You’re getting your ass kicked.

Hey Heidi – Blanche devereaux called. She wants her snake print lounge suit back.

    • StellaZafella

Betty White called after Rue Mcalannahan and left a message; “Ohhh does that come in PINK?”

    • Estelle Costanza in Boca all the way.

    • rh33

Her aufit looks like something Stacy and Clinton would slam dunk into the trash.

  • Paigealicious

Uh, Heidi looks like she should be on People of Walmart and not Project Runway.

    • Vickiefantastico

Get out of my head! 🙂

    • TheDivineMissAnn

       LOL  Like x100

    • This is genius, but I’m not sure there’s that much difference between the two shows anymore.

    • yulaffin

I thought she was in her PJs for a designers’ challenge.

  • MzzPants

I have to say…Heidi’s plaid frock was pretty fab.

    • Super_Red

      yes! I loved that dress!

    •  Agreed!  We all went “Ooo!  Cute!” when that came out and “what the hell is that crap?” when the snake jammies came out.

But seriously Nina.  The hair.  We grow weary.

      • also, dylan’s face is looking a little old to go with those teen-aged curls…

        • megohd

Terrible hair. Does nothing for her. And I was shocked to learn that Dylan and i are the same age—at first glance I would have put her close to 50!

  • PinkLemon

would it be a crime to suggest nina tries a different hairstyle? just for once?

    • Aww. I like her hairstyle. It fits her so well. I don’t blame her for sticking with it all this time.

      • PinkLemon

It definitely suits her, but she could use a change up. Or at least different makeup?

        • GorgeousThings

I think Nina’s got a look that works for her, and she’s sticking with it. Fashion editor, don’t you know…

          • PinkLemon

but for TEN seasons? Does anyone know off the top of their heads if she’s ever worn it different, ever? I just google imaged ‘nina garcia updo’, to no avail.

          • GorgeousThings

I’m not disagreeing with you. Just pointing it out. I think it’s a fashion editor thing. Look at La Wintour, Diana Vreeland, Carrie Donovan, and any number of the fashion press. They got a look and stuck to it like glue.

          • PinkLemon

True, they do. And it DOES work. But..but….Nina’s on TV!

          • cclaussen3

I just googled “Nina Garcia updo” and found your comment- google works!!!

        • CozyCat

When you’re young, you enjoy changing things up from time to time.  After a certain point in life you’ve got so much else going on that having a hair/makeup style that works means you have one less thing to worry about….

          • TVKimmy

I don’t expect her to try feather extensions or shave a side of her head, but would it kill her to rock a low-slung pony, a fab barrette or put it up, just once?

    • Thathoodwink

Yes!!! Thank you for posting this. At this point I am not sure which is more tiresome..Nina’s same old hairstyle or Michael Kors’ same old cartoon character outfit of black tshirt and blazer.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

To quote Ms. Nina herself, “We’ve seen this before”

  • sockandaphone

me and my mom laughed when we saw heidi walk in. like seriously? those. are. pajamas.
and nina’s jacket, SO MUCH WANT.

    • Introspective

What hurts is that they arent even GOOD pajamas. Theyre the kind of pjs i wear when the wash needs to happen stat.

Heidis plaid dress was killa. This outfit however just looks like death.

      • Snailstsichr

Even more to the point – they’re the kind of pajamas I’d be embarrassed to wear to Wal Mart.

      • cclaussen3

I think the worst part of the snake PJ’s is the horrible ribbed cuffs, neck and waist. Those NEVER look good on casual tops, ever! Looks like Alfred Dunner

        • “Looks like Alfred Dunner”

Yes! I couldn’t come up with a brand, but that’s exactly it.

I was shopping a couple weeks ago and I saw so many tops with ribbing at the bottom. In fact, I was hard pressed to find a casual summer top without it. I do not get it. It’s unattractive and it makes everything look cheap.

RE: Heidi’s plaid dress. Yikes! I just can’t. Adding insult to injury, I believe she was wearing white shoes. It’s like she wanted to offend a viewer, and chose me.

      • sockandaphone

the worst part is that it probably cost more than my monthly rent. and that is one sad thought.

  • DinaSews

Agree completely.  Can we show Tim Gunn?  He is also a 5 in my book.

    • StellaZafella

Hmmm, Tim Gunn in Snake Print PJs…hmmm.

  • Judy_J

I really liked the outfit Heidi was wearing at the start of the show.  The snakeskin print jammies, not so much.

  • Not feeling the snake print sweat suit. At all.

The purple dress is pretty simple but it did translate very well on TV. Especially, with the big, bouncy wavy hair. What I’m not here for is that gawd awful HUGE gold woven belt around her waist.

Nina is Nina and she’s killin’ it. The end.

  • Scarlet39

Just who in the hell is dressing Heidi?

Nina looks fantastic.  Love that jacket so much!

  • Vlasta Bubinka

Project Pyjama! The search for the next great sleepwear designer! the contestants and judges won’t even have to wash their hair!

  • I hated Heidi’s Geranimals, but loved the plaid dress from the first part of the show. Anyone know who the designer was?

  • I really loved Dayna’s outfit at the candy shop, I need both the shirt and tie she was wearing STAT!

  • nannypoo

For a person who criticizes other people’s fashions, Heidi sure looks like a slob here.

  • I love that purple dress. It’s gorgeous and simple. Nina, as (nearly) always, looks amazing. Heidi looks like she just rolled out of bed. The plaid dress at the beginning was a much nicer outfit.

    •  Gorgeous and simple and looks so comfy! I want one! Possibly not when the sale price is still $229.

      •  Ouch. That’s a lot of money for a short-sleeved, knit dress.

  • siriuslover

I commented to my kids that Heidi actually looked frumpy last night.

  • I thought Heidi’s looked like a glorified sweat suit.  I loved Dylan’s dress, figured it was her dad’s.  Black label. Out of reach for us mortals.  Nina, no one seems to be able to touch you.  Keep it up.

  • JMansm

    I really like Dylan Lauren.

    • Cathy S

Me too. I thought she did a great job and she has so much personality.

    • blondie65

      Great hair too!

  • snarkykitten

The dress Heidi was wearing when she introduced the challenge was cute. Why didn’t she wear something like that instead of snake print pjs?

  • Susan Crawford

Those hideous animal print separates from Elizabeth & James definitely cost more than my monthly rent, yet look like something off the rack at K-Mart. Bad choice, Heidi. When you KNOW La Nina is stepping out in couture, you’d best bring your A game, fraulein. I thought Dylan looked very cute, both at the shop in her perky tie and shirt combo, and at the runway in RL Black Label – a super turn-out.

  • Hermione_Granger

I love that you are totalling the scores.

    • Pam Winters

Did I miss last week’s judging the judges?

  • mjude

heidi’s outfit was awful, nina is all kinds of fierce.

  • MilaXX

Eh’ I don’t care for Nina’s jacket. I would have given this week’s win to Dylan.

  • Cathy S

Nina rocks. I wondered if Dylan’s dress was Ralph Lauren–the color was fabulous. At first I wondered if Heidi was in one of her own active wear outfits.  It was too much. I thought Dylan was a good judge this week.

  • Laylalola

It’s hilarious that a full-body snakeskin-print outfit might be Heidi’s way of trying to be more demure in how she dresses.

  • Sara__B

Nina dresses well but her hair is looking tired and dated. I hope she moves up to a better ‘do soon. (No 5s from me until she does!)

  • l_c_ann

I love your jacket.  I wish your hair were shorter so I could see your wonderful jacket better.  I think you were overdressed just to be sitting there, judging.  Wouldn’t you save that jacket for an evening at the Met?
I hate what you’re wearing.  I could only hope your hair could hide more of it.  Pajama chic is never going to expand. Even though those PJs would hide most figure sins.

The judge didn’t try to compete with the ladies and made a safe, appropriate choice.  For that I think she won the night, by several points.

  • GenXcellent

Heidi also looked exhausted at judging.  I was wondering if this challenge was filmed during a particularly trying news day re: her divorce.

  • tinyredlocks

TLo, love the running totals! You guys are just awesome.

  • GorgeousThings

Ugly snakeskin pajamas. Heidi deserved a 0.5 for this week, and the .5 is only because she wore inoffensive pumps.

    • BrooklynBomber

I don’t know; I think I’d have given her points (just for the sheer guts) if she’d gone all the way and worn the fluffy slippers that outfit calls for.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

La Nina brought it again!  WTF was the Kluminator thinking-that’s just a slightly upscale “Attention, K-mart shoppers” look.

  • Something about that jacket Nina had on reminded me of Latoya Jackson!

  • LOVE that you’re keeping tracking of the average score as we go!!

  • sagecreek

We can’t get a point just for hating Nina? No?

  • TSkot

Loved Heidi’s tartan plaid one shoulder number that she introduced the challenge in at the start of the show.

    • reganmeister

Me too! That was gorgeous, and it would have been even gorgeous-er if she had gone up a size!

  • dress_up_doll

Good lord! I can’t even see Heidi wearing this to pick up the kids from school or run errands. It’s just so not from her usual wheelhouse.

  • I loved the top Heidi wore, but I instantly thought of pajamas when she was standing up.

  • Charmella…a DIVA at large!

I would have given Heidi a score of 1 for wearing something where we could not see the imprint of her ladyparts! Everything else gets ZERO! When I saw her last night, I thought that she had forgotten to change from doing the morning chores!

  • Heidi’s animal-print pajamas were so forgettable that I didn’t even notice them during the judging. But I’m another fan of that plaid outfit she wore for the introduction – that was smashing!

  • heidi:  just one question.  W…T…F?!?!?!

and i think you were too kind to ms. lauren.  the color is lovely, but it looks like something one would wear when lounging at home.  maybe she and heidi are going to a slumber party after.

  • BrooklynBomber

That jacket kicks every kind of ass.

It sure does (and as always – you have a way with words!). I wonder if Heidi was embarrassed that she should up her pjs when she saw Nina.

  • Srw27

Wait, Heidi’s outfit cost over $600 and she looked like total shit in it?!?  No thanks!

  • Even if they were PJs, they were just ok.  You were generous with your 2.

  • Pupioso

I didn’t like Heidi’s at all whatsoever. Terrible.

  • formerlyAnon

I dunno. I’d knock Ms. Klum down to at least 2. Maybe 1.5. I don’t care what they cost or how high her heels are, they look like jersey pajamas. NO WAY are they 2.5.

I’m tempted to knock Ms. Nina down to 4.5 just because it looks, I dunno, too reminiscent of bull fighters and wandering mariachi bands. But I’ll let it stand if you guys feel really strongly about it.

  • mhleta

Heidi’s outfit looks like the kind of thing you reach for when you have PMS, gas, haven’t showered and just can’t be bothered. Pair it with a pair of dirty bedroom slippers to complete the ensemble. Love the other two. I love to see the choices Nina makes. Looks-wise I am her American older sister and I like to think I’d be as fierce if I had a similarly fierce bank account. Viva La Nina!

  • Vic

I’ve come to the conclusion that Heidi has no taste. She’s looked awful in almost every photo in which she has control over her wardrobe choice. And she’s a judge on PR? Go figure.

  • turtleemily

Heidi’s head looks nice, at least.

  • CalicoGal

    Tim Gunn 5/5

Who is supplying his clothes? Handsome!!!

  • FashionShowAtLunch

I would cut a bitch for that Balmain jacket.  Interestingly, when they kept talking about how severe Elena’s silhouette was, I thought of Balmain and other designers who work in that aesthetic and wondered why they would be so harsh about those strong shoulders she favors.

  • Anathema_Device

Heidi’s pajama outfit had me laughing out loud. Yes, Nina for the win, by far.

  • JimiG

Even my husband asked why Heidi was wearing pajamas. If he comments on her fashion choices, it’s a sign of the apocalypse. Nina looks fantastic. Dylan looks like a sweet school teacher (and I say that with love–as a teacher, I’d buy that dress, as a fashion icon’s daughter, no).

  • sk8tfan

And it’s Nina Garcia for the WIN. Although I thought the plaid dress Heidi wore at the beginning of the hour was adorable (me want) and if she’d worn it to judging, there might have been an upset.

  • l_c_ann

Heidi is giving off an Ashley/Mary-Kate Olsen vibe when she slouches in her (not) pajamas.

  • butterflysunita

I love that Ralph Lauren dress and want it.  Looks like something you could run around all summer in.

  • Gail Kwak

Heidi’s python pjs make me want to vomit.  Literally.

  • SorayaS

Nina shouldn’t get a 5/5 for those shoes! Suede platform pumps, ugh. Black stilettos or something with some gold detail (boo to your matchy aversion) would have been a lot sharper.

  • Is it bad that I spent a lot of time being all “Why in the world is this candy shop owner judging.”  I should have known, nepotism.

  • Any comments I missed on the Green dress HK wore in the TIMES SQUARE show? I’d like to hear them!

    • Saucysusan

See last Fridays recap of the show. Comments are mostly just what you’d expect!

    • There is a “Judging the Judges” from last week.  Plenty of us noticed. 😉

  • rorschach1992

Heidi: Chicest pair of pajamas I’ve probably ever seen. I’m probably in the minority but I like it, 3/5. Her plaid tablecloth dress from the beginning tho definitely gets a 5/5.
Dylan: Simple, but gorgeous. Nice to see a pop of color on the panel. Well accessorized. 5/5. Also a 5/5 for her outfit from the beginning of the episode. I seriously want the tie she was wearing. Nina: The blazer is awesome! Her outfit is well put together, but sorry her always boring hair never nets her a perfect score in my book. I guess it would kill her to do something different. 4.5/5

  • TieDye64

Python pajamas are never the way to go. Ever.

  • bellafigura1

Nina’s hair puts Dylan’s to shame. Makes it look like Real Housewife hair, not chic at all!  Very surprising for a young Manhattan fashionista.

    • Spicytomato1

I was surprised by Dylan’s hairstyle, too. I had seen her featured in magazines and remember her having more understated, sophisticated hair. Maybe some producer talked her into that look?

  • pippitypup

You know what? Nina’s smile is actually genuine here. She’s happy. You know why?

    She remembered to get dressed.

  • quiltrx

Thank you for explaining who Lauren is so I didn’t have to ask LOL.  She has beautiful hair that I covet!

  • Scott Isaacs

I’d actually place Dylan over Nina this time. Nina’s jacket just seems tacky…the gold feels very applique to me. Dylan, on the other hand, is giving some effortless Lauren Hutton fabulosity, head to toe. I love it.

  • michelle shields

WTF Heidi! She looks like she just crawled out of bed. I’m shuddering.

  • carolclark12

$200+ dollars for that knit dress and $600+ for that snakeskin outfit really pisses me off.  Slap a label on something and people lose their minds.  Nina doesn’t get off any easier – her hair BORES me.  And the biggest fashion queen of all should know not to mix black and orange.

  • guest2visits

I HATE off the shoulder tops; this is no exception. And I like the idea of the snake skin pants, but these look kind of shabby with
the draw-string top and the lack of shape. The one time when Heidi should be wearing it tight – and she wears pj’s instead.
I love the jacket and the belt on the model; on Nina it just looks like MK’s dowdy little side kick in black.
The Lauren dress suited her; but I was wondering what the market is for a giant purple dress, outside of places like
    Miami, Dallas, San Diego…

  • Heidi, WTF??

I like the cumulative score, but is there any doubt Nina will win?

  • unbornfawn

Heidi – I think I saw this sweatsuit over on the “People of Walmart” site.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

WTF was Heidi wearing?  It looks cheap and horrible and something like someone would wear on an airplane going from one really small airport to another.  Oh and if they weighed a lot.  And I weigh a lot, so I can say that.  UGH.  Heidi Heidi Heidi.

  • fashionzombie

Yay! I love the new “cumulative” feature!

  • ballerinawithagun

Nina’s jacket trim would have worked for the candy challenge.

  • l_c_ann

Is Heidi going after a new style?  I don’t understand the too tight green dress followed by the separates.  This beautiful woman knows she’s going to be photographed whenever she goes out in NYC and California.  Is this some sort of penance for the Anya thingie?

  • What? No scores for Ms Kors?

  • Snarky_Amber

I love that the arrows on Nina’s jacket literally pull focus upward. She’s so flawless.

  • i’m enjoying all the cumulative scoring. I’m gonna bet on Nina as S10 winner.

  • kaydenpat

“But when you wear them together, they look like pajamas.”  Exactly. Not flattering at all.

  • bitterk

Heidi looks horrible.  HORRIBLE.  That was incredibly unflattering.

  • Brigid Anderson

I KNEW that was Balmain. Gorgeous.
