Jordana Brewster in Tucker

Posted on July 27, 2012

It’s the end of the work week, and like almost everyone reading this today, we’re struggling not to phone it in. So we have to ask: are we being cranky sticks-in-the-mud when we state …

Jordana Brewster attends the Dannijo & Tucker Tea Party in Beverly Hills.

Tucker ‘Summer Is Everywhere’ Dress

Vince Camuto Signature ‘Imogene’ Wedge

… that a silver mesh top is a horrible choice to pair with that skirt? And yet, when we first glanced at this outfit, we found it mostly inoffensive. The skirt’s a bit twee, but it’s also quite striking, and we like it paired with those sandals, which are pretty much the best pair of summer-dressy shoes we’ve seen in a while. The purse is a bit “meh,” but doesn’t really bother us. This is clearly a casual-dressy poolside event and everything from her waist down either doesn’t bother us or looks great to us.

But MAN, the more we look at that top, the more we think it was an awful choice. Given the venue, some sort of classy mesh top* might have worked. In fact, we think a black mesh could have worked quite well. But silver? With those pieces? It just feels so… off.

* Fine. Go ahead and chew on the term “classy mesh top.” We won’t stop you. But such a thing might exist. You don’t know for sure.

Some of the butterflies come pre-caged with that top.

  • elirt

Agreed! It’s an awful choice – style, color, fit – all of it doesn’t line-up with the dress. I wish she left it alone because the top is the part of the dress I like the most.

    • gabbilevy

Agreed. It would have been a great dress on her just left alone.

      • teensmom99

Dress would have been too business-like.  But there are a million great top possibilities she could have chosen with much better lines.

  • nicole seligman

i think she looks summery and appropro for the venue. there’s no tights and the mesh is actually pretty classy, imo, with the black piping. i don’t love butterfly prints on adults or actual-net-colored mesh and that bag just blends right in, but her shoes are cute and the proportions are right.

  • Judy_J

I don’t know….the more I look at this, the better I like it, which really surprises me because I’m the last person who would even consider a mesh top, classy or otherwise.  Maybe it’s the piping on the top that pulls it together with the skirt.  I’m in a quandry over this outfit.  I shouldn’t like it, but I do. *runs away to hide*

  • Sara__B

I so dislike insect print clothing that I can’t imagine this with or without the illusive (and perhaps purely imaginary) tasteful black mesh top.

  • Lilithcat

You are not being cranky.  Those pieces don’t go together at all.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Nope, and they’re not even flattering on her. She would have looked a million times better had she worn the original dress.
I’m also not loving the shoes. I don’t mind a thin ankle strap, but those look like shackles.

      • meowing

Agree with you both.  The shoes look okay in the head-on picture of her, but the side-view is clunky and too heavy for a summery event.  Also think the hair color is bad, and the purse is meh.  Guess that means no to the outfit.

  • sagecreek

The top sucks, no doubt, but I think in late July we can grade on the curve. On the whole, she looks a) cute and b) not completely enslaved to the people who gave her the clothing.

So I give her a pass. A high pass.

  • joe_tey83

The butterflies are escaping from the net!!!

    Hideous.

If the skirt were white and not cream-coloured, perhaps that would have improved the lookÉ (I can`t type question marks today, that e thing with the accent aigu is a question-mark… damned french canadian keyboards!)

Having said that, it`s a tea party, butterflies fit, I think.

  • l3icest3r

Even though it’s mesh, the top looks like it’s made of material that traps the heat. And only her hair is hiding the fact that her bra is probably visible, since you can easily see the waistband of the skirt peeking through.

There’s more, but I’m phoning it in, too. Have a good weekend, everyone. :)

  • ChelseaNH

The top is just wrong.  Black might work because it would relate to the skirt, but the silver is just out there on its own, refusing to collaborate with the other pieces.  Not a team player.

  • nannypoo

Visualize me here as I cock my head and say “I don’t understand”.

  • http://profiles.google.com/hawkeye1978 Kristin Hanson

I like the shirt dress with the butterflies more than the skirt.  If you’re going to have insects on your clothes, you’ve got to commit to it.

  • MilaXX

I think she would have done better wearing the butterfly shirt and carrying a better bad. That top has no business being paired with that skirt. Cute shoes though.

  • BobStPaul

As a dress, it was really cute.  As a skirt and with that top it’s major blech.

  • Introspective

I just bought a classy mesh top at the Zara semi annual sale for a song. And i stand by my choice! (And by the turn of phrase that Uncles TLo have now given me to sell myself and the world on my choice.)

I think the over-all, first glace effect is quite nice.  Hey, in this heat, I’d wear mesh all day every day if I could.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J5QKZG5NFXQE3MLXFN3MAQDUTA Mary Stone

The top is reading more ‘well-worn pot scrubber” than silver to me right now.

Totally doesn’t go with the butterfly skirt.

  • janetjb

Classy mesh top? I’m sure it doesn’t exist.
A black blouse might have been okay, but I think I prefer the dress.

    • poggi

I ‘m with you. I like the dress better than the skirt generally, but certainly better than tht skirt/shirt combo.

  • BrooklynBomber

When you’re right, you’re right. There’s nothing good about that outfit.

  • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

It looks like she spilled something on her original top so she just grabbed this mesh thing quickly to change into. Those shoes are cool, but not at all summery or sandal-y.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

    What a stridently discordant ensemble…

    • kittenwithaquip

”Stridently discordant”— I love it! You get the vocab award for the day!

  • Magatha

Gosh, she’s pretty. But that skirt – is that Colorforms Couture? Can’t be refrigerator magnets, or the butterflies would have flown up to the metallic top.

  • pookiesmom

Huh. I kinda like it, against my better judgment.

  • carpediva

You’re so right , TLo…. we CAN’T know for sure! Damn you, enigmas of the mystical!

    (Also? LOLZ.)

  • Cat_In_A_Hat

Or, you know, maybe just the original dress. That might have been best.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

Love the term “TWEE”! Not many American’s know the british term for just a bit too sweet! Tah!

  • quiltrx

I like the skirt, but I agree the top is a bizarre choice with it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

What was so wrong with the original dress?

After Miley’s early offense this week in her mesh ‘top’, and now this one..I think we can say that said ‘classy mesh top’ may not exist.

  • formerlyAnon

    Awful.

  • alyce1213

Horrible top.  Can’t say I’m too crazy about the skirt.

  • jw_ny

the silver mesh top is not the problem with this outfit, it’s the old lady butterfly skirt and purse.. (twee?…eh, I don’t think so…)

  • Susan Crawford

The skirt and sandals are really pretty sleek and fun for a summer afternoon. But a silver mesh top is a no-go at any time in his gal’s book. Honestly, even a plain t-shirt in black or red with a nice belt would have made this a better look without the fug-value of the mesh.

  • guest2visits

Anything would have been better than the this top; even a plain t-shirt in blue, pink, red, black or maybe even yellow.
I can’t imagine anything this mesh top would look right with. As far as I’m concerned, all mesh tops belong in 80′s workout videos.

  • crash1212

No mesh – EVER. If we simply follow that rule, nobody gets hurt.

  • http://twitter.com/jalae Janey

NO :O Mesh can never be classy! Any outfit where you can see your bra cannot ever be classy :O

  • PaulaBerman

So is the butterfly outfit separates? The photo of the original makes it look like a dress. I wish she had just worn the whole outfit with some appropriate jewelry.  Actually, I’d like the butterfly top a lot more if the sleeves were shorter. So quibbles all around today.

  • RzYoung

    Yeh I agree, it jars
