In or Out: Jaime King in Stella McCartney

Posted on July 31, 2012

We probably shouldn’t even bother asking the Bitter Kittens for their opinion on this one because y’all seem to uniformly despise the work of Stella McCartney. But we do so love teasing you all (with love) and besides, we think this is pretty cute.

Jaime King attends 2012 TCA Summer Tour – CBS, Showtime and The CW Party in a Stella McCartney dress paired with Jason Wu sandals.

Stella McCartney Fall 2012 Collection

Jason Wu ‘Egrette’ Strappy Studded Platform Sandal

Yeah, maybe there’s a whole hell of a lot going on for such a little dress. And maybe it would have been better to save this fall dress so it could be worn, y’know, in the fall (this with tights would be super-cute). And sure, that weird underboob vest thing is not an addition that improves the dress. But this looks mostly cute to us. The hair looks a bit severe to us, but the dress looks cute on her and the shoes are well-chosen. In the land of celebrity fashion, that’s a rare thing.

But go ahead. Have your Pavlovian anti-Stella tantrum. We won’t stop you.

IN! STELLA!!!!!!!!!!

OUT! I have always relied on the kindness of strangers to tell me my dress is ugly.

Rachel Bilson is also waiting patiently to hear your thoughts on her peplum pants.

      That dress looks SWELTERING

      • norseofcourse

Because it’s made from upholstery fabric.

        • l_c_ann

Because the dress neither flatters nor inspires.  It is confused in a bad way.

      • gsk241

I agree!  The high, tight neck and the heavy material make this dress look positively stifling.  OUT.

    • demidaemon

I’m sorry, but I can’t deal with the panty detailing in the skirt. Just what every woman wants–panties on the outside of her skirt! OUT.

      • Tatiana Luján

OMG, I had not looked at that paty detailing. It makes me shudder.

      • Judy_S

To me it looked, on the front, like big old shaped patch pockets in a contrasting fabric. Not a good look either. But from the rear, yes, it is comical in a different way.

      • MajorBedhead

The triangular shape on the back reminds me of those toxic waste signs. And that’s just not good. There’s just too much going on with this dress. I do love the shoes, though.

        • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

          lacy depends.

        • kimmeister

Yes!  I immediately thought “hazardous waste” when I saw the backview!

      • funkypeanut

Yes, instead of wearing a thong, now she can just apparently paint one on her skirt. This is a real WTF moment.

    • Peri7473

the rear skirt treatment makes even her size 2 butt look wide.  I do like the sleeves better on Jaime than on the model where they look way too big.  and the sheer patches are just a why?  not terrible, but – Out

    • Sobaika

Semi-decent (especially for Stella) but something about it is bulky. The sleeves, the collar, whatever’s happening on the butt, etc. It’s not that Jamie needs to go up a size because the same thing is happening on the model.

      • guest2visits

Exactly. It looks like a bulky shirt tucked into a bulky skirt.  And the patchwork on the skirt… ugh.

    • Anathema_Device

Out. The detailing kills it. Is that an underwear silhouette on the back? And underboob patch pockets on the front? And an “I peed myself” shadow on the skirt front?

The shape and fit are fine, but, oy, the rest of it.

And didn’t Nicole Kidman just wear a variation of short royal blue dress & black gladiators…like yesterday?

    • kittenwithaquip

Just to be contrary, I will say I like it. I also think for once somebody got a black “gladiator” platform sandal right (that’s a lot of adjectives for one shoe!). It strikes a balance between strappy and edgy, and doesn’t look clunky like most of the black heels we’ve seen on the RC lately.

    • SophieCollier

Well, it fits her better than it did the model.  S’awright, I suppose, but it does seem to be out of season.  I agree, the shoes look good.

    • Cassie

I agree that the styling is well-done, but the dress is…sorry boys, but that dress is ugly. I tried to get over my anti-Stella prejudice (I have seen dresses of hers that I’ve liked! Really!) but that is just fug. OUT.

    • MilaXX

IN. Her makeup is a bit too orange, but this is somehow working on her.

    • butterflysunita

IN.  She looks pretty.  But why is she posing that way in the second to last photo, with her head forward like a duck and her feet splayed outwards?

    • snarkykitten

but whhyyyy is she wearing 3/4 sleeves in July?!

      • Louise Bryan

Because she rolled them up so she wouldn’t be wearing full length sleeves in July.

    • Kyle

That is one ugly look. oh goodness. The weird black patches under the boobs and the weird skirt is like, just no. And the material looks so damn heavy for the fall. And the make up is so bad.  But hey, I like her shoes….kinda!

    • Roey Thorpe

      Those shoes are FIERCE.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i’m always happy when SMcC pulls it together so i’m feeling a bit perky re: the abovenoted. the gargantuan pockets, however, i think we all couldve gone lifetimes sans seeing. i do not understand why they, in their enormity, have been affixed where once there was nil. otoh, all the rest of it’s, you know, something like regal+blue+spiffy+yes, flirty. good job.

      • AudreysMom

the dress was a close in for me – but the unnecessary addition of boob bags/flaps here move my vote to an OUT.

    • Call me Bee

I like it!  Even though it’s a dark color, it looks cute and fresh and flippy.  Flippy is good for summer.  Plus–super cute shoes and cool hairdo  IN!

    • trisker

IN. adorable all round.  Love Stella. Masterful choice of shoe.

    • Pamela

Adorable dress but what’s with the black squares?  They’re not on the runway version & they detract from the overall look.  Cute sandals in spite of them being yet another pair of platforms.

    • alyce1213

Very OUT. Overly-badly designed little nothing dress in heavy, upholstery-looking fabric.

    • guest2visits

I think she’s so pretty, and the color’s so pretty, that you have convinced yourself it’s a pretty design. Nope. It’s not.

    • Bozhi

In.  I really like the whole look.

    • Jangle57

I don’t hate it as much as I usually hate Stella McCartney designs – is that damning with faint praise?  But still don’t like it much – OUT

    • Lilithcat

Doesn’t she know that the skating competition happens at the Winter Olympics?

    • quiltrx

OUT.  I like the *ideas* in the dress, but not all together.  The fabric is pretty but VERY fall. The blouse is better as it looked on the model.  And I can’t look at the skirt and NOT see panties.

Stella has ideas, but she always has to throw them ALL into a single garment, making an overwrought mess.  I can’t understand why she’s a “famous designer” for doing things that you’d be kicked off Project Runway for.  I think she needs to team with someone rather minimalist…she has some good ideas and picks nice fabrics, but it all gets out of hand.

      • MoHub

She’s a famous designer because her father is Sir Paul.

    • Shannon Beamer

No, just no (translation: OUT).  I lack the energy to point out the usual SMC issues, but this dress still has them.

    • phrenk

I think she’s making this work; I vote IN.

    • marlie

The dress would be cute… in the fall or winter.

Also, would it have killed her to actually DO her hair?

      Love the shoes though.

    • Tatiana Luján

Shorter and less wide sleeves were a big improvement.

    • GTrain

    • NurseEllen

Kind of a cross between a short oriental-inspired robe and that old shmatte your elderly aunt wore around the house, only shorter and in a better color.  How Jamie King is managing to make it look even marginally new and original is anybody’s guess.  Lord knows she’s not trying too hard, given the so-called “chignon” marred by flyaway hairs and visible hairpins.  Shoes are better than usual and I like the crossed ankle strap in the back.  But it’s not enough to save her.  OUT.

    • VioletFem

      IN. It looks cute enough.

    • unbornfawn

The top looks matronly while the skirt looks juvenile. I like the shoes when they are not on a foot. I really would like to find a Stella McCartney I liked. This bitter kitten votes OUT.

    • stacey avelar a royal blue version of red bordello wall paper and it clashes with her coloring….no!

    • emily

It was out even before the tit-pockets. They just make it 1000 times worse. TBH I can’t stand her…. or the dress. So that means OUT

    • bailey debruynkops

i am a fan of neither jason wu nor stella mccartney soooOUT

    • Susan Crawford

Such a pretty face; such a hiddy dress. OUT. The Curse of Stella strikes again.

    • Paige Boerman

I like it from the waist down. The top half of the dress looks miserably hot and a bit unflattering, her makeup looks too severe, and I wear my hair like that when I’m biking. OUT.

    • Fifi LaRoux

I like the shape of the dress, but the fabric and the black panel under the boobs is killing me. Also way does this look like the second day she’s been wearing that make-up?

    • sleah_in_norcal

her makeup is rather garish.  that closeup is scary. stella’s runway model looks like she’s out to kill.

    • margaret meyers

Out.  What’s with the black pot holders on her rib cage?

    • Alexis Keller

      In! she pulls it off

    • Anique Ashraf

Miss DuBois would shoot a woman wearing that. Me no gusta.

    • Sarah Souffriau

She looks like she’s sweating her ass off, no? Also: really don’t like her makeup here.

    • Judy_S

I don’t think that’s a vest or dark panels on the lower part of the top. I think it’s the result of the flash on the fabric.  In the shot of her head and shoulders you get the same effect on the upper part, of the pattern washed out. It’s just the way the top stretches across her boob line that creates an angle so sharp it looks like the fabric changed. I think.
I will give it an IN. Not a great dress, among other things because of that shifty fabric, but I think it is saved by the simple elegant styling.

    • Samantha Irene

Don’ t like the underboob vest thing – but she looks so cute that I can’t give her anything but an IN

    • kingderella

dont love the shoes, make-up is a little off… but the dress is cute. IN!
also, i think mccartney is hit or miss, like almost every fashion designer.

    • sweet_potato

out. It looks like a sofa.

    • Cathy S

Overall I think it’s cute but some of the detailing underwhelms me. I give it an In, but kind of in a lukewarm way. I do love blue and black though.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  There is wayyyyyyy too much going on with this dress.  It’s a bit more fall as well, but honestly, they basically put the outline of a huge thong on her ass.  Not cute.

    • In_Stitches

She keeps popping her hands in front of the dang thing.  Why?  Because she knows it’s ridiculous and over-baked.  Thank Coco she rolled up the sleeves and mitigated that disaster, but those black patches that obliterate any suggestion of a bust are just too much.  OUT.

    • Ginger

Nope…it still looks like a stick of ass.

    • Le_Sigh

Is ok.  Totally seasonally in appropriate though.

      Very very weak in.

    • sagecreek

In. Also, this adds to the mounting body of evidence that someone has Stella locked in the basement while an actual designer has taken her place.

    • Judy_J

This was a pretty cute dress till someone added those enormous black pockets to the bodice.

    • KristenM

OUT! I don’t mind the dress so much, and the shoes are fierce, but her hair is hurting my eyes! Mine looks better after sweating in the subway for a hour.

    • Vickiefantastico

I don’t know what it is about Stella, but I immediately hate her clothing before I even see who’s it is. To me, she just doesn’t seem to know what makes a woman look good. So, OUT. But the shoes are cute!

    • Stella Zawistowski

Why did she have to add those weird black pockets (or are they just patches?)? It was an okay dress, if all wrong for the season, before those things got put on. OUT, of course.

Also, anyone who shouts my name Brando-style gets an OUT from me. 😛

    • leave_Blake_alone

The dress looks gorgeous on the runway. Why did they alter it with those weird too-large pocket patches on the front? It probably deserves an out just for that, but the original dress gets an in for me.

    • Jessica O’Connell

The dress is ok, just not appropriate for late July. She must be dying. The shoes are great but the hair and makeup are lacking. OUT.

    • elemspbee

OUT. The fabric and color and print is heavy but she’s passing it off as twee. shoes don’t match the heavy dress.
that hair is tragical. Looks like a cheap dye job.

or maybe i’m just so use to her southern belle drag. her northerner nemesis looks good in that peplum pants office outfit number.

    • ASK26

WHY WHY WHY can you not find a sleeve, ANY sleeve throughout the entire winter, but we keep getting long sleeves all summer?

    • Dot

The skirt has underwear on the outside! Brilliant!

    • vintagion

I’m surprisingly on board with the dress – especially with the shoe choice. For Stella, its almost demure.

However, what I CANNOT with is the messy yet pinhead hair, focus-pulling lip and “summer glow” sickly eyeshadow. All wrong.

But, I’ll give her an IN since we’re really talking about the clothes.

    • CYVH9000

IN for me. Adorbs. It’s a hard dress to look good in, but she looks cute.

    • MissAnnieRN

I guess I have to handicap all things Stella.  She has her own scale.  IN for Stella, OUT objectively.

    • Violina23

I wouldn’t mind it if it wasn’t for the random black squares. Who thought THAT was a good idea to add?

    • Shoelover1512

OUT! Way to heavy looking for the middle of summer. And I can’t on the hair and makeup. I put more effort than that in getting ready to go food shopping.

    • prettybigkitty

      Cute shoes!

    • Deb_Lynn

That color is gorgeous on Jaime King. If only it were a differently-shaped, differently-designed dress.

    • carolynmo

Nope. I don’t like it. Except the shoes–those I like.

    • Joy

Love the shoes, but the boob and butt triangles ruin what could have been a cute dress.  Her hair is a mess, lipstick clashes with her skin tone, and eye makeup makes her look consumptive…adds up to an OUT.

    • Anplica Fiore

I love the fabric choices here.  Just not placed where they are and for a hot,July day.  I also think she needed to have someone do her hair & makeup since it looks like it was done by a 10 year old.  Out

    • deliadee

The dress looks like a heavy ice-skating costume.  Hate the pattern but love the blue color and the shoes.  However, it’s an out.

    • BazoDee

I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. The shoes tip in into a weak IN for me.

    • TheOriginalLulu

It’s a pretty dress and I really like the color, but WOW is it too buttoned-up for August! Girl, put that away and save it for October or November!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s OK-that’s about the best I can muster for a Stella McCartney.

    • Jessi03

No.  I actually would be tempted to say IN if it were fall and she hadn’t altered it to add boob pockets and panty shadows, but as it is…NO.

    • RebeccaKW

I much prefer the color and print of the runway version.  I think her lipstick is a bit harsh for this, especially since she seems to be wearing either orange eyeshadow and nothing else or just nothing else, and I can’t stand the thought of long sleeves and being buttoned to my neck in July.  But she doesn’t look bad.   I guess I’m going with a tiny In.

    • AthenaJ

Out! Old curtain fabric and punched-by-a-baby eyes.

    • belfebe

IN!  She looks cute as a button!  And the shoes are fierce and complement the outfit quite nicely.

    • Dan_In_NYC

Skirt, yes.  Bag, maybe?  The rest, no.

    • Introspective

This is not seasonal or cute. Its overworked and widens her rake thin figure. Stella needs to be banned from all sewing machines and sketch pads STAT.

Girl bye. An out if there ever was one.

    • emily mcginnis

that hair is a terrible color for her!

    • Chillmer

I don’t understand why the pockets are on her stomach.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Is orange eyeshadow becoming a trend?  I really hope not.

      • PinkLemon

Yeeeeahh bronzier shadows seem to be a mini trend right now. And it only looks good .0009% of the time.

    • NCDFan

First impression was that she looked cute. Second was that the shoes were perfect for the dress. The details of the dress aren’t particularly great but, with that first impression gotta go with an IN.

    • Kerry McCombs

      I like it. IN.

    • Nacogdoches

Is that a different top with a skirt? because the print is not the same as the runway version. I sorta like the dress (on the runway), but it’s ruined with this top with the stupid black patches. Plus, too out of season.

    • plinkiedoodle

Yes, I like the dress and shoes.  Very nice.  But that hair?  DIY?  I’ll be on the red carpet today, so why don’t I just pull my hair back into a sloppy pony tail?  Geesh…

    • Deborah Lipp

It’s cute but I hate the shoes and hair.

    • janetjb

I don’t really think any of it works for her except for the shoes (which surprises me greatly).

    • marilyn

Out.  The top is very covered and wintery, and the bottom is short and summery.  Stella gets a D+ for this one.

    • foodycatAlicia

It’s better than most Stella McCartney dresses, but I think this is a Girl, it’s not your dress. It’s Chloe Sevigny’s.

    • MarissaLG

I really like this, actually. I LOVE a blonde top knot with a hot pink/red lip and I think the color of the dress looks good on her. It is giving me a couchy vibe, but this gets a solid IN. It was a risky choice and I think she looks cute.

    • sockandaphone

      and still a nope. OUT

    • kimmeister

Out. The orange eyeshadow wounds, the black squares are dumb, and I don’t like the way the heel is perfectly aligned to the back of the shoe.  That seems to be a recipe for falling over.

    • Sara Munoz Munoz

This dress is definitely not cute. But it looks good on her. MUCH better than the model.

I feel alright voting this IN.

    • jennifervney

OUT! The top of that dress looks waaaay too hot for July, she’s got the weird consumptive eye make up going on, and looks like she put zero effort into her hair.

    • PinkLemon

Stella’s not so bad. She’s got good pieces every now and then. This is one of them. IN.

    • Joyce VG

      mmmmmmmmmmmm OUT

    • kerry dee

i love this!!! in in in the colour is lovely.

    • Susi R

    • Mary Stone

HOT…not in a good way at all.

It’s the start of August, and who wears brocade satin in August? Totally dislike the proportions (that flared peplum on the skirt is making my eyes water), the odd ‘colorblocking’ effect going on right under the chest and in the triangular panel centered squarely (pun intended) on the backside.  OUCH.

O to the U to the T from me.

    • rissa42210

Out.  Come on!  It looks a million times better on the runway.  Also – FALL collection.  FALL.

    • Ashley Wilson

She looks lost in that dress–she is not the striking woman to pull this off. It looks huge on her and that red lipstick is bringing out all sorts of harsh tones in her face. OUT because the only thing you see is this dark dress–it’s wearing her and not the other way around.

    • formerlyAnon

In, though not with wild enthusiasm. Not in love with the big black pockets(?) on the chest, but the overall shape is nice.

And I think you guys are now on the hunt for decent Stella McCartneys to feature, just to mess with our prejudices, aren’t you?

    • granddelusion

    • Larkin21

The dress is cute, although seems pretty baggy. It’s the makeup I can’t get on board with. If the dress were cuter, I’d overlook the makeup but she gets an overall OUT from me.

    • Penn Collins

OUT. the color is nice on her, the rich blue with the makeup is very nice. I agree the hair is too severe (‘lush’ would look nice) but the pocket cutouts and all the busy/weird are just not working for me… Just noticed the model version does not have tghe pocket cut out thing going on- this might have been a much better look (and some how negates the ‘I peed myself’ effect as well)

    • jw_ny

wow…her eye makeup, lipstick and hair are so bad and severe, that I must go with OUT!  No fault on Stella’s part on this one.  😉

    • Clydette Wantland

Looks like heavy drapes for the windows.

    • SapphoPoet

I going out on a limb here and saying that I guess you think its cute (you used the word four times in the post). Not criticising; it just really jumped out at me.

I like the dress; it’s youthful and flirty, although it does look wintery. Would be a great New Year’s Eve dress, I think.

    • Rebecca

I haven’t seen brocade like that since prom season, 1998.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

No.  Just no.  Too short, and I thought those were black pockets that had been added before you mentioned a vest.  Her makeup seems too orange-y to me.  I like the shoes, but they aren’t enough to lift this out of OUT territory.

    • jmorino08

I’m going to say In… because she is rocking it. And whatever they did from runway to red carpet was a marked improvement.

    • Shawn EH

In! Flattering on her, though she seems to have been crying.

    • Candigirl1968

Surprise, surprise, another over-designed dress from Stella.  Out.

    • Synnamin

      Out! That skirt is HIDDY

    • oohsparkley!

I like it on Jaime. In.  It’s got problems on the model, mainly the sleeves.

    • Amye

I’m a Stella fan, but this is ugly.  I don’t like any part of it, except the color – but not for summer.

      • Lauren Lynch Fox

        Agreed on every point.

    • ChelseaNH

In.  I like the dress, but the hair is painful (to her scalp and my eyes).

    • elzatelzabelz

IN(ish)- I like the idea of the dress, BUT it look shot and odd and what are those black suares under her b00bs? Weird.

    • another_laura

hmmmm  well, not all of the modifications make sense to me – why so many different patterns and why the large dark blocks on the bodice? – but I’m glad that it’s not in that now-completely-annoying electric blue in SM’s fall collection.  And yes, overall it looks cute on this girl.  So I give it an in, but in lower case.

    • Vera

That it not her worse is the best I can say about it.

    • aristida_girl

IN, but it would indeed have been better in fall..

    • ccm800

      out – still.

    • RzYoung

OUT, c’mon it’s yuck. Stella must have dirt on all these lady celebs, that’s the only way she can get them to wear her monstrosities!

    • julnyes

Out! Heavy upholstery fabric with weird nylon looking under boob panels.

    • librarygrrl64

No to cobalt blue, no to shiny, no to heavy brocades in summer. OUT.

    • Nonnah

If it was October, I might vote this an IN.  As it is not, it is OUT.  Also, I’m not down with patchwork boob.

    • melanie0866

You’re right, it would be cute in the Fall with tights.
