Gary Oldman on the ‘Today’ Show

Posted on July 19, 2012

You’ve gotta love Gary Oldman. He’s been working in this industry for almost 30 years, and yet he still has not the slightest bit of patience with all the silly poledancing crap that comes with it. The reason the Americans love certain Brit actors so much is their obvious disdain for self-promotion. Sure, more often than not, that disdain is as much a pose as pretending you love being asked about your outfit, but the Yanks eat that shit up with a spoon. We wouldn’t take that attitude from a star with an American accent, but slap on some Received Pronunciation and we all go weak in the knees. The look of befuddlement on his face in the video is hilarious.

Anyway, here he is, walking the gauntlet and looking kind of chic while doing it.

Gary Oldman makes an appearance on the ‘Today’ show in New York City.

Anyone who’s read us for any length of time can tell we place a high value on simple chic-ness. It’s not that we don’t like crazy, boundary-pushing fashion or showy, attention-seeking ensembles. But so few celebrities can pull off that kind of thing that we almost always default to preferring it when they keep things clean. Is this outfit hard to wear or indicative of great personal style? No, not really. But it’s smart-looking, classic, and age-appropriate, which in this case means it can be worn by practically any adult man without looking too old or too young for him. It’s one of those “can’t go wrong” outfits.

And we love both the shoes and the eyeglass frames. Nicely done, Commissioner Gordon.

He’s simply fabulous. His acting speaks for him and it is enough.

I’ve loved him through the highs (Sid, etc) and lows (Scarlet Letter) of his long, rich career.  He looks great here, perfectly tasteful and classic.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

A former co-worker once made me swear that I would never, ever see The Scarlet Letter-I’m serious. I did weaken and check it out on cable-dear lord, what a mess;somehow Gary kept his dignity.

      • alyce1213

        but barely

    • Catiline

Gary Oldman’s work in the Scarlet Letter is a great example of that expression “Actors do their best work with their worst material.”

    • HobbitGirl

But even in ATROCIOUS movies he is always amazing. Or in that commercial he did for BMW years ago…

        • Catiline

Molina’s moment with the “cat”, during that scene at drama school, chilled me more deeply than a lot of actual horror films I’ve seen.  He’s brilliant.

I have a special love for Gary Oldman, not just because he’s brilliant and I love him in the 5th Element and Batman, but also because, after the new Batman movies came out, someone told my brother (who is a psychiatrist and at the time was in a seminar of psychiatrists regarding their manner) that he reminded them of Gary Oldman, and (considering the Commissioner Gordon and Sirius Black roles and the humor of Zorg), I could see it. My brother at the time, not having seen Batman, thought of his roles as Dracula, Zorg, Lee Harvey Oswald and Sid Vicious, and was less than pleased. Anyway, it amuses me, and he took it more as a compliment after I made him watch Batman.

I like the striped lining in his jacket. He can act too. Not a fan of the Batman role though.

I didn’t notice the lining either, but I did notice his awesome striped socks. I love the subtle reference.

He looks great. So very much like what the most attractive (to me) men of my generation look, in real life.

The other thing, along with the Received Pronunciation, which makes it work is the steady, relentless commitment to the work of acting. Even with the overseas glamor, you can’t be beloved for your intolerance for publicity chasing forever if you don’t also have that solid grounding. (Lots of American actors have it as well, including both the biggest stars and the outer fringe. But too bad for them, not the accent.)

You just don’t see white blazers and white wingtip oxfords on men (aside from perhaps the stereotypical mob type movie ;))  Anyway, He looks cool, casual, and well put together…without looking contrived.

Kudos to him also for being able to wear those rather snug black denims (?) too.

  • Anathema_Device

Oh, I have such a soft spot for this man. Love seeing him looking sharp and pulled together.

  • http://twitter.com/kerrymccombs Kerry McCombs

I’ve been in love with this man since I was thirteen and I first discovered Sid and Nancy at my local Video Tyme. My friends and I would rent three cult films over and over again: Sid & Nancy, Quadrophenia (we wanted to be British Mods SO BADLY), and Suburbia (the 1983 Penelope Spheeris film, not the 1996 Richard Linklater). Gary is such a fantastic actor because he is pure chameleon. Amazing.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/V7CD4N7DXCOMQAC5SNOQSJHS3I maureen

Your comment took me back. My friends and I used to do the same thing, and I’m very pleased to see that someone else appreciated “Suburbia”. Thanks.

    • Corsetmaker

First thing I remember seeing him in was Prick Up Your Ears. He got Joe Orton to a ‘T’. Fabulous actor.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OD35QQZNBPZJXWTCBY7N4EE7VY Sarah

He’ll always be Rosencrantz to me. Or wait, was it Guildenstern? ;)

  • susu11

Love the striped lining in his sleeve in the second picture, and the frames are just perfect! The whole look is age-appropriate and summery chic. As if I needed another reason to love Gary Oldman, he’s not only a brilliant actor but his sense of style is flawless. <3

  • AmeliaEve

chic-ness is not a word. Love you guys to death, but chic is already a noun. The original French word is also used as an adjective in English, but that doesn’t erase its original meaning. It’s like saying “fun-ness.” “Fun” is another noun that has been pressed into adjectival service, but deep down, we still know it’s a noun, and use it that way where appropriate.

Otherwise, I agree that this outfit does display an understated but effective sense of style, in other words, a simple chic.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

       ”chic-ness is not a word.”

Several dictionaries and thesauruses disagree with you. It took 3 seconds of googling to confirm that.

  • Lilithcat

I adore the multi-colored striped lining of the jacket.  I’m a huge fan of that sort of hidden detail.   It’s why I love men’s haori so much.

(P.S.  Gary, put your cellphone in your pocket.)

  • SpcilK

Delicious! I love his simple and stylish outfit, is his jacket by Paul Smith?

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Good lord I love this man!

And it’s a perfect example of an ensemble that would translate really easily and really well to “real life.”

ETA: Interesting to note that creepy-looking-handler behind him is wearing almost the exact same look, with a black shirt instead of white.

ETA#2: OMG! Look at the lining of his blazer in the 2nd picture!! For some reason, that pop of color and pattern makes me love him even more, if that’s at all possible.

    • alyce1213

Guy behind him is wearing striped seersucker jacket; looks like the collar of a knit polo shirt

  • TheOriginalLulu

Love him. Love the look. Bravo.

  • julnyes

Love him forever and ever. I know it is ridiculous to say this on a fashion post, but I really don’t care what he wears – he is just such a fantastic actor and comes across as a very together and intelligent person with a brilliantly dry wit…. I just love him okay!

  • kimmeister

Cream combined with white drives me nuts, but I do like the basic principles of the outfit.

  • another_laura

Love the white on white and then the white shoes – perfect touch.  You go, Gary O!

  • granddelusion

Looks like he hasn’t washed his hair in those 30 years.

  • newleaf1

Can’t help it, I see him and think “Eric Clapton” – I think they really resemble.

  • MilaXX

He often wears really nice eyeglasses. I love his look here.

  • guest2visits

He was gracious, and a little shy in his tv appearances. Which is so surprising, considering his parts and his long career.
And he looked perfectly summer, and comfortable.  The handler-person is so funny; these delicate celebs seem to require such
careful guidance lest they wander off down the street with their own plans.

Love white bucks and wish more men wore them.  White bucks and seersucker, aah… anyway, he looks great and unstudied.

  • Rand Ortega

    Gary Oldman– Honey Badger.

”Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy” was incredible. He never ceases to be riveting.  He’s living proof there aren’t small/bad roles, just small/bad actors.

    The Look– Sleek, sexy, effortless.

I love it that he’s holding hands with someone who LOOKS LIKE A NORMAL PERSON.

I love me some G.O. b/c not only is he hot but he’s an amazing actor.  Why he doesn’t have at least one Oscar is beyond explanation!

  • littlemac8

He is charming, funny and suave BUT he doesn’t suffer fools lightly!  I love that he knows how to dress for his age and still look current!  YUM!

  • NICHOLAS PASQUALE

I want his cell phone case.

  • margaret meyers

I like that he is wearing appropriately tailored clothes.  He’s a good-looking middle-aged man who has kept his figure but doesn’t feel the need to have all of his clothes tight.  I’m thinking Robert Downey, who has the figure of a 27 year-old, but is, alas, 47.

  • Corsetmaker

    Love Gary Oldman.
He says the shoes are Paul Smith, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the jacket is too. The lining looks typically Paul Smith.

  • Lisa

I love the look, and I love him – Oldman has always been my imaginary husband!

  • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

Amazing actor, gorgeous to boot, and with an accent to die for. Of course, the same can be said for most British actors (James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Alan Rickman, etc….) You’d have to be absolutely frigid not to be affected.

I remember being so surprised to find out he’s the villain in The Fifth Element. Talk about transforming yourself! Also, he was wonderful as Beethoven in Immortal Beloved and absolutely broke my heart. I love him.

  • SaideHeldberg

Oldman is definitely brilliant, but has a presence in every
variety of character that he plays which emanates pure passion for his love of
the arts. I’ve never been wondering if the talented actor will ever learn to
characterize to other characters; he nails whatever he has been cast. My
colleague and I travel together on business for Dish, giving us an excellent opportunity
to share in our mutual love for film. I consider us lucky that we can explore a
mutual hobby together after work, saving us money in expensive cities. Since we
both subscribe to Blockbuster @Home, we take turns picking an actor we love
then start getting movie by mail to have marathons with our favorite star. It’s
a nice stress reliever; helping us bond, which emanates in our work.
