Elie Saab Fall 2012 Couture

Posted on July 09, 2012

The collection is titled “In Constantinople’s Wake” and you can see the subtle hints of Ottoman motifs and an overall sense of diminished, yet still glittering beauty throughout; as if you were watching very old and perfectly preserved gowns walk the runway for one more round of awe. The black lace pieces don’t thrill us as much as they could, but we’ve had more than our fill of that particular style lately. The creams, golds, pale pinks and peacock blues, however, are gorgeous, with a glamorous, regal undertone to them. There is nothing here that reinvents the wheel, but these are the kinds of ethereally beautiful gowns and dresses one likes to think of when one thinks of haute couture.

I don’t care if some of these looks are essentialy remakes of his earlier work, they are beautiful and that’s what matters...MayorMoney.blogspot.com

Sumptuous!  That silver/ice blue column gown with the gold belt may be my favorite, tho those teals are stunning as well.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

         Mine too!

      • Fordzo

Those teals were such a great surprise as I scrolled down.  Love them!

        • http://twitter.com/iraki86 IraKi

They are so pretty! Especially the teals. And I think I can see celebs of all body types wearing some of the pieces.

I looked at that dress and thought, “Damn – I wish Princess Di could wear that.” I don’t normally think about her or anything. Now I can’t help wondering what she’d be wearing if she were still here.

        • http://twitter.com/pointlesswords jaymeglynn

Awww! All that wasted style potential. Now I’m sad.

    • ChiliP

Just breathtaking. I don’t care if some of these looks are essentialy remakes are his earlier lines, they are beautiful and that’s what matters.

      • AudreysMom

Forget Katie Holmes, and forget a couple years, some of these dresses will make an appearance at the Oscars!

Viola Davis, presenting Best Actress, in the gold dress with the cap sleeves. If her stylist knows anything…

Fifth row from the top, centre dress: that is so very Taylor Swift. Mark my words. It is her dress.

    • enchanted216

Lovely:)  And I’m so happy to see sleeves!

      My. Favorite. Designer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/catherine.kronenwetter Catherine L Kronenwetter

I agree the blacks were waaaay upstaged by the rest.  The blues/teals are just amazing.

    • MilaXX

I like the blues, but I’m completely burnt out on black lace, sheer skirts and the entire nude family of taupe, gray and peach.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Z2CUJA7CJI3M7MUMQOVJDB3XQ Christine

      Damn, I want them all.

    • kikisayshi

I am in love with the first gold gown. Ahhhh….

    • SpcilK

      The collection is simply sublime!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Every single piece is stunning and elegant and classic! There are more than a couple of pieces that I’d like to add to my wardrobe!

    • lbl

Forever feeling like the only one who doesn’t care much for Elie Saab. *sigh*

      • Pannyx

I am right there with you. Not feeling this collection.

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

You are not alone.  I came away from this one thinking I must have missed something.

      • In_Stitches

I normally love Ellie Saab and while I respect the handwork that goes into his collections, I find myself underwhelmed by the lack of forward momentum.  Most of these dresses could be from any season, any year.  Beautiful, but boring.  It’s how I felt about Marchesa a few years ago.

      • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

I understand you. These are really gorgeous in some ways, and some might say timeless. But like with any art, I always want to see something a little new, a little daring. What is “classic” to one is “safe and sturdy” to another, and I can’t help but see this one as a tad too safe to wow me.

      • BrooklynBomber

I like a few of them. As for the rest, I’m thinking he’s second (after Marchesa, of course) on my list of most hated fancy-dress designers. (Or would be, if I kept such a list.)

    • kimmeister

Only the blues caught my eye.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I look forward to Saab dresses more than most things. They are always just so PRETTY!

    • VicksieDo

Wow, I love every single look here, they are stunning, elegant, so above prom gown crap.  I’m listening to Florence + the Machines’ “Breath of Life” and it goes perfectly with this epic collection. http://youtu.be/r0EVEXX9kpk Cannot WAIT to see every gown on red carpets everywhere!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

that one…tea stain color with 3/4 sleeves…teal hints in the skirt and sheer-ish top…incredible. timeless.

    • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

thoroughly amazing. love every bit of this collection.

    • formerlyAnon

As a collection, it’s too much embellishment for me to appreciate any single dress – It’s overwhelming and cloying.  I suspect that an individual gown on an individual woman in a room not entirely clothed in this collection would be very effective.

    • NDC_IPCentral

Breathtaking, mesmerizing fabrics.  Each must cost an Ottoman ruler’s ransom.  The haute-est of haute.  What a fabulous dose of elegant gorgeous – thank you, T Lo!

    • jmorino08

Model casting notes clearly called for broad shoulder! Love the short gold dress in the row above the wedding gown and the spaghetti strap gown with the teal accents on the skirt. I agree with your take on the black dresses, although the middle dress in the first row would look amazing on Helen Queen of Fuckingfantastica. My fav look in this collection is the peach gown with the short sleeves and solid skirt. Simple, understated, yet absolutely gorgeous!

Not to derail, but is anyone else seeing the R-rated L Word ad gif of two ladies making out on the left of the screen?  It’s extremely, um, energetic and highly distracting …

      • AnaRoW

It’s more PG-13 but yes I see it.

      • formerlyAnon

Oh yes. Definitely NSFW in my office. But, I noticed the ad, even though I had to drape a printout over the side of my monitor or else actually go back to (oh the horror!) what I’m paid to do. So, as an ad, successful, I guess.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

too bad it ends so quickly…

    • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

      Ugh … gorgeous.

    • Nonnah

Love that old Hollywood glamour.  Stunning!

    • Joyce VG

      such golden deliciousness

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

This man can do no wrong.

    • lonepear

Oooh, so much pretty. (And me without any fabulous galas to go to.)

    • Pants_are_a_must

Beautiful dresses, but I foresee a lot of undergarment mishaps happening on the RC, especially with the black dresses.

    • guest2visits

Gorgeous and dreamy. Exquisite detail. Cannot pick a favorite.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Seriously beautiful. All of it.

    • Holloway Cushman

all so gorgeous. emma stone should wear the pink floofy one.

    • sleepycat

stunning really, the wedding dress inspires so many words, yet silences them completely

    • Anathema_Device

I really love this collection. So pretty. I would love to own the middle one in the second row and to have the life that goes with it.

    • pippitypup

Is the very first model’s head on backwards??

      • alyce1213

Yes. As are her knees and feet.

    • alyce1213

These are absolutely beautiful and eminently wearable (with lining).  There’s not a bad one in the bunch and a couple I would die for.

Somehow Elie Saab gets it so right, and Georgina Chapman gets it so wrong.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/K3O2QNXDJIU3AJINAGNJRYWDZ4 mrspotts66

      one of each, please!

    • quiltrx

I’m becoming quite the Elie Saab fan.  These are gorgeous!

    • SophiaPehawkins

Aaah. I love them all and in general I love black lace, so yeah it’s all gorgeous.

    • understateddiva

Not enjoying this.  More sheer and lace – it feels done.

    • michelle shields

      always beautiful!

    • RzYoung

Wow! So Grace Kelly! The blue-y ones are my favourite.

    • Beardslee

Lovely and wearable.  If I had a gazillion dollars and a life that required a highly embellished gown I would be thrilled with this collection.

    • Puckndc

    • Tafadhali

I think this is an absolutely stunning collection, buuut does anyone else get a flavor of Miss Havisham from the wedding gown?

Not in a baaaaad way (because there are so many good ways to imply that a dress looks like it has been fading with its wearer’s youth and beauty as she locks herself away in her bedroom reliving her unfulfilled wedding night for decade after decade), just in a sort of decayed elegance way.

    • LambeeBaby

They are all so beautiful. Art that walks the runway.

      • Vainte

Love most of them. Can only see Dakota Fanning in the teal ones before criticism begins.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

So pretty. I love all the shimmer, and that wedding gown. Gorgeous!

    • SapphoPoet

      Gorgeous. I loved them all.

    • Larkin21

      Just gorgeous.

    • miagain

      He makes such gorgeous clothes!

    • KateMaryC

I can’t wait for Cathy Cambridge to rock some of these.

    • Catiline

I may have whimpered a few times.  So pretty.

    • LinXGUA

How pretty! It’s breathtaking. Those combining pale blue and gold are my favorites.
However, I think they could have done a bolder  design/color/transparence  for the wedding dress. It looks like Laura Ingalls is going to marry in that thing.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Elie Saab, when they get it right,  are better than anyone at touching the heart of our fantasies of what a beautiful gown could be. They touch that little girl fairy/princess thing and make it mature and gracious and glorious.

      • Hiptobesquare

That is really well said, and I couldn’t agree more.  I’m a big Elie Saab fan, and everything here–aside from the black lace (I’m over that too) is pure fantasy food. There are half a dozen gowns I would love to wear. If only I had somewhere to wear them. And money, of course. Tons of money!

    • SophieCollier

DROOL….   I want to see Tilda in #11.  (The sleeveless ivory gown)

    • another_laura

They are gorgeous but I can really do without the “flesh” or taupe dresses these days.  The gold/peach/bronze/whatevers are fab and my faves may be the light blue-with-golds.  yummy!

      • littlemac8

Funny, isn’t it, I can already hear TLo telling us bitter kittens how washed out some starlet looks in those fleshy, beigey, taupey colors! The teal/blue gowns are yummy!

    • marilyn

      Absolutely beautiful!

    • PrunellaV

Choking on all the foofy detailing, but I can see how one of these gowns on a red carpet would be stunning.

    • aristida_girl

Amazing! Red carpet all over the place

    • http://twitter.com/LPsometimes LP

I would wear any of the these before I wore any of the wedding stuff in the actual bridal collections featured earlier this year.

    • Diego!

      This is superb and breathtaking!
