Comic-Con 2012 Red Carpet – The Boys, Part 1

Posted on July 16, 2012

Hit it, boys.

Bryan Cranston

It was a semi-dressy event (for Comic-Con), so we’ll let it go. Besides, he looks great. Sometimes, a finely aged mature man needs to go with what works.

Danny Pudi

Dave Annable

Also adorable.

Elijah Wood

Frodo, can you even breathe in that getup? Hipster-cute, though. As you can see, the guys had no problems dressing appropriately for the venue.

Kellan Lutz

Kellan looks a little unsure of himself. Perhaps he is worried that his semi-tucked shirt isn’t just so or that the brim of his cap isn’t appropriately curved.

Kevin McHale

He and Frodo should get together and have a skinny-jean-off to see who wins. Hipster Olympics.

Liam McIntyre

Cute. Love the t shirt.

Norman Reedus

Suave motherfucker.

Robert Downey Jr.

Okay, he’s a dork, but that’s kind of cute.

Stephen Moyer

Still can’t stand the Lady Clairol dye job.

Steven Yeun

Terry O’Quinn

It’s San Diego; it’s hot; it’s a comic convention. Given all that, we couldn’t possibly ding anyone for wearing flip-flops. But wearing them with dress pants and a double-breasted blazer? That’s just weird, John Locke.

  • Violina23

The flip flop/suit combo is just TOO weird for me.  The world that comes to mind is “Skeevy”

Also, I don’t know who Liam McIntyre is, but I want to….

    • It’s the male version of stank foot.

    • Sobaika

I remember him doing that at the Emmys a while back. Or the Globes? Hawaii style really seeped into him and he has no intention of turning back.

    • TropiCarla

      Spartacus! (the second coming)

The first one – Andy Whitfield tragically died late last year – he had the better body and I still miss him. Liam is his replacement and is a cutie, but not quite as well-defined.

    • julnyes

My darling Frodo Martin Freeman was rocking flip flops as well – outside of that he had on a very dapper ensemble.

  • I can’t wait ’til Matt Smith joins the skinny jeans contest. (Arthur Darvill, too.) The Doctor wins!

    •  There’s a shot of him with Nathan Fillion, (sighing hugely) of Firefly getting their geek on, zipping around Facebook just now.

      •  I need to see that. If only Benedict Cumberbatch was with them. It’d be like the Trifecta of Swoon. (Actually, I’d rather David Tennant, but beggars & choosers & all.)

        •  I am right with you!   That would be a serious Swoonathon.

          • charlotte

             Swoonathon! That made my day.

      • blogless

As I was scrolling down I hoped he’d be on there! Maybe there’ll be another list.

    • Annie Leung

Matt and Arthur are shoe-ins for the finals. After all, they can do pretty impressive lunges in their skinny jeans.

  • Laure Ariane Desrosiers

    • curiouserandcuriousest

There’s just something about ‘Norma Reedus, Suave Motherfucker’ that I truly love …

      • Catiline

That belongs on a USA ‘Characters Welcome’ ad!

      • Me too. Please don’t fix that typo, TLo. It’s the funniest bit of this whole post!

        •  On the other hand, it’s really only funny because we know it was inadvertent. Otherwise it would just seem rude, so of course you had to fix it.

    • I was wondering if he knew he had a lady’s name, but googled him and realized it was a typo. A funny one! 🙂
(I had to edit this twice to fix my own typos.)

  • I have apparently inherited my father’s intolerance for men who button the top button of their shirts when they aren’t wearing a tie (he used to yell at the TV during episodes of Murphy Brown because Frank was always doing that). I really do think it’s quite possibly the worst look ever.

    • LP

I think it must be the new hipster thing.  I do not approve.  Yuck.

    • mmgk

Worse than a guy in a suit and flip-flops?

      • So close… but yes, by a hair. And only because I see the buttoned shirt so much that it’s really started to grate on me, whereas flip-flops with a suit are uncommon.

Also because Terry O’Quinn is just so much more suave than either of the two dweeblet shirt offenders pictured here. Those two I want to send home so their moms can show them how to dress properly; him I just want to shake my head and laugh a little and go “Oh, Jon Locke. You crazy.”

    • Spicytomato1

My 13-year-old son tends to do that with sport shirts and even polo shirts and whenever I urge him to unbutton it and loosen up, he yells that if it wasn’t supposed to be buttoned then why is the button even there? He’s a rule follower.

    • Melissa Brogan

I’m sure watching Monk would have driven you insane, then 😉

  • BazoDee

The men have it so easy – carefully selected graphic T or fitted button down, skinny jeans and some chuck taylor derivative, add a little hair gel, and maybe some jewlery -a nice cuff or necklace and we’re done.  Anything else just never quite looks right for the event (unless you are over 50 -because then that look gets tricky).

  • Someone on the Comic Con Ladies thread remarked that not one star was cosplaying, then Robert Downey Jr. gives us his Iron Man glove.  Gotta love him. I realize its not full on cosplay, but he made a stab at it.  (but his shirt is gaping right at the belt line.  HATE when that happens.

    • sagecreek

Yep. Even for a glimpse of naked RDJ, that ruined the look for me.

      •  He is quickly getting into HBC land.  Where regular rules of attire and accessorizing simply do not apply.

        • formerlyAnon

Yes, and I’m not sure I like that. I’ve never felt any little surge of semi-protective admiration for him/his clothing choices, or any surge of unalloyed admiration. I hate to admit such pettiness, but I’ve just never *liked* him enough to want to grant him such special status.

[Yes, I enjoy pretending it’s all about me. Why do you ask?]

    • Pants_are_a_must

One should also mention that RDJ wore 4 (!) different outfits to Comic Con yesterday. He switched per event he attended. TELL ME THAT’S NOT AWESOME.

      •  It is a truly awesome thing. and shows a lot of smarts on his part.

      • Catiline

        Okay, that’s awesome.

      • formerlyAnon

Okay. Maybe he can get special status. That’s dedication and, more important, he’s actually got to be sincerely having fun with it or he wouldn’t bother – not with FOUR outfits.

    • MilaXX

And his suit & shirt are Iron man colors. I forgive the gap on the shirt since it may be caused by his pose.
Also *really* hoping Idris Elba has a bigger role in the next Thor movie because the thought of him appearing at Comic Con makes my heart go a flutter.

      •  Idris,….Elba,….um, yeah,

        I’ll just be over here,….

    • Deborah Ann Wollfrom from True Blood showed up to the Rifftrax panel dressed as Axe Cop (a rather amusing web comic). Usually most of the cosplaying celebs do something with masks so they won’t get recognized. Adam Savage from Mythbusters dressed up as a Ringwraith from Lord of the Rings. ‪Lance Reddick from Fringe thought that he could just wear a hat and no one would notice him. He was wrong. (I was at the Fringe panel, and Jasika Nicole was laughing about that. Apparently she was able to get away with just styling her hair differently.)

      •  Nice to know that some of them stepped up to it and took part.

  • Norman Reedus makes me swoon.  He cleans up well!  And Dave Annable has aged well.  Love the touch of gray.

    • call_me_schmeg

swoon for real. he plays a greasy squinty-eyed redneck on tv, but this picture makes me want to let him take me behind the high school and knock me up.

      • formerlyAnon

A power that seems to be shared by a bizarrely large number of actual squinty-eyed rednecks, to judge by the high schools with which I am familiar.

    •  SO true! I love the salt-and pepper look. He’s getting hotter as he ages.

  • Catiline

Good lord, Steven Yeun is handsome!

Only RDJ could cosplay as his own character and get away with it.

    • kimmeister

I don’t know who Steven is, but am in awe of his cheekbones.

  • LP

This is the one situation where RDJ’s sneaker and a suit gig is perfect.

  • Jessica Ebert

The Walking Dead guys are killin’ it! Yum!

  • nannypoo

“The guys had no problems dressing appropriately for the venue” because this is pretty much how they dress all the time. If you look at any photo call you will see women dressed like it’s the red carpet and men dressed for a trip to Home Depot. But those flip flops with that suit are just disgusting.

    • “As you can see, the guys had no problems dressing appropriately for the venue.”

Nannypoo, your remark is almost word for word what I was going to write.

I’d like to add that the photographer that took these and the lady’s pictures in front of the step and repeat should have his camera confiscated. The angle and lighting have made everyone of these beautiful people look ugly and distorted.

  • really? not going to bring up Stephen Moyers freakish proportions? look at his teeny little legs! he looks like a caricature.

and yes, the hair is frightening.

    • Catiline

If a six-pack of Billy Beer were dangling from Stephen Moyer’s fingers, it would not look out of place.  That is a problem.

    • Elizabeth Norris

I was more distracted by BLUE STEEL.

    • I have to be honest – this dye job is MUCH better than the “cinnamon plum” look he was sporting recently. It’s still bad, and I still hate it, but it’s comparatively good, if that makes sense.

      • formerlyAnon

So you thought so too? I wondered if the hair was actually better or if the lighting was responsible.

    • MsMajestyk

YES! I found his balloon head distracting.  Terrible angle.  There’s a more flattering Comic Con photo of him on IMDB albeit with the same “over it” expression.

  • Sobaika

The men had no problem dressing for this venue because this is how they generally dress for every venue.

    • AnaRoW

       My thoughts exactly.

  • jilly_d

    Mmmmmm Norman

  • newleaf1

Kevin McHale is the cutest cutie pie of all – what beautiful eyes! (Says someone who is old enough to be his mother)….

  • That’s obviously the Man in Black trying to sabotage Terry O’Quinn’s reputation!

  • lchopalong

With RDJ it’s near impossible to tell where he ends and Tony Stark begins.

  • janetjb

Clearly this is the perfect venue for the boys to dress themselves.  Danny, Dave, Kevin, and Liam are my favorites.

Only one misstep!  Terry O’Quinn I am looking at you…did you just get a pedicure?

  • norseofcourse

    He’s John Locke.
Don’t tell him what he can’t do.
(Though it does look pretty weird…)

    • dress_up_doll

I so miss that crazy motherfucker.

  • RDJ. *fans face* That man gets better and better looking.

  • alyce1213

I don’t care if he is John Locke.  That’s just scrolldown shkeeve.

  • charlotte

    I love Abed!

    • Sobaika

Troy should have shown up in a Spiderman costume.

      • charlotte

      • Rand Ortega

I think that was last year.

      • It sucked, but Donald Glover was not at Comic-Con this year. Of the main cast, DG, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong, and Chevy Chase were missing at the Community panel. Chevy Chase’s absence was a relief. The panel went much better than it has for the last two years.

  • formerlyAnon

Boys win over girls, HANDS DOWN.

Possibly because their usual under-dressing is is appropriate, even more so when taken down an additional notch. And the suits just generally look good, especially on the fellas over 40.

Norman Reedus does SUCH a nice line in degenerate hotness.

Robert Downey Jr. wins, though. Yes, it’s stupid but it’s also perfectly appropriate in a place where genre-appropriate sartorial stupidity IS high fashion.

  • vintagion

I LOVE that Robert Downey went all the way for Comic-Con. Love. Love love.

  • RDJ… that suit…. *fans self*

  • fauxhawk

BWAha ha ha haaah!!! I laughed so hard at that scroll-down fug on John Locke’s feet!!! Hilarious!

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m sorry, but RDJ just out-nerd-chic’d JGL. Classic Marvel vs DC fashion-off.

And I’d take RDJ over JGL anyway.

  • The whole “hipster olympics” idea needs to be explored. The Oatmeal should run with that one.

    • sayonaramrskackleman

Current TV did a funny Hipster Olympics video a few years ago – I tried to post a link earlier but I forgot Disqus and hyperlinks don’t play well together. Anyway, if you google “hipster olympics” it’s the first result. Though I’m sure The Oatmeal’s take on the concept would be hilarious as well 🙂

  • tinyredlocks

    “Hipster Olympics”  Heeheehee!

  • jw_ny

Steven Yeun..sock-less?   ew & oh…I hope not.  Even for skinny pants, those look too short.  Otherwise cute.

    I totally dig Liam McIntyre’s t-shirt.

flip flops with a suit…looks pretentious.

  • mjude

    norman/daryl…he is something else…wow

  • filmcricket

    Events in the Hipster Olympics:
    – Skinny jean lunges (as suggested by someone above me)
    – Hat wearing: Trilby and Classic Fedora sections
    – Plaid: judging criteria include Is It Tight Enough and Are You *Really* Wearing It Ironically?
    – Glasses: Wayfarer vs. Horn-rims

  • SapphoPoet

    The guys did well.

  • ewww, flip flop feet, eww, eww, ewwww.

  • I think it’s partly the angle, but yes, he does look like a short-legged bobblehead doll.

  • Aurumgirl

I just don’t think the boys understand the sandals.
    1.  Never without a pedicure
    2. Never with a suit
    3. Never with socks
    4. Never on any part of the world which doesn’t involve either a soccer field or a beach, if they’re flip flops of any kind.

Please do not tell me that women wear flip flops all the time in all weather and in all places especially when wearing pyjamas in public.  Just because some will jump off a building from idiocy, does that demand that you do so too?

  • kimmeister

This has to be the first time I’ve seen Kellan Lutz NOT looking huge and bulky.  Is it an optical illusion, or has he slimmed down?

  • Has Kellan Lutz deflated? I guess not being in ‘Magic Mike’ really got to him.

  • ScarlettHarlot

Awww, Glenn and Darryl look so nice!

In my dream world they get a spin-off show where they hit the open road and leave everyone else behind. Then, during sweeps, they run into Sawyer and Miles. Sawyer and Darryl can have a nickname-off, and they can all split a six-pack of beer, talking about how great it is not to hear “WAAAAALT!” or “CAAAARL!” every five seconds. Also, they’ll have a dog.

  • oh RDJ, you’re awesome.

  • FashionShowAtLunch

Norman Reedus is SEX ON A STICK.

    • formerlyAnon

Definitely the yummiest of this lot, IMO.

  • AnnaBananas

  • Vera L-

Another else think that Steven Moyer looks like mid-1970’s Roger Moore?

    Norman Reedus  ~happy sigh~

  • Liam McIntyre is my new boyfriend. In my mind. So hands off!

  • RSJ is Iron Man. I remember when the announced the casting all those years ago. I just went ‘Perfect. Absolutely perfect.’ He has yet to prove me wrong. Showing up not just with the glove but wearing a damn Iron Man suit with the red, the gold and the gun-metal gray? It’s almost too on the nose if it weren’t for the fact that HE knows it and is totally playing it up!

  • MilaXX

Of course the guys don’t have trouble dressing here. It’s the dressing up they don’t get right. Noticable excepts are the footwear Lady Clairol and John Locke are wearing.

  • Kevin McHale always has the best shoes.

  • littlemissstrange

It warms my heart so to see John Locke again, so much so that I can overlook the sandals under the suit. *blinded by adoration for the crazy old bastard*

  • I assume Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill are missing from part 1 because there is going to be a post about how awesome Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill looked all weekend?

  • RDJ knows how to accessorize for Comic-con. Now everyone else needs to get with it! LADIES. If there was /ever/ a time to wear those rocket-heels this is the venue. Or the flame ones.

There is a whole lot of adorable in the mens crowd.

  • I wonder if “suave motherfucker” is the look that guys who tend toward “total douche” are aiming for.

  • Good lord I love Robert Downey, Jr! He’s a big kid, but that’s part of the reason why I think he’s so cool!

And Stephen Moyer couldn’t look any LESS pleased to be there. Seriously, dude, crack a smile, or go home. Plus, I know it’s a casual event, but he couldn’t at least wear an interesting/fun t-shirt (see: Liam McIntyre)?

  • Anyone watching Frodo’s show on FX? Wilfred is so bizarre, but also very funny.

  • Charles Purdy

Dave Annable come to me, come to me, come to MEEEEEE!

Liam McIntyre, you and your beard need to come over to my house right meow. And grab Norman Reedus while you’re on your way.

Oh, and Stephen Moyer is a corpse.

  • Pennymac

NORMAN!  Ah, my shitty Monday just got infinitely better. Swoon.

  • Pennymac

Oh, crap, Discus is all wonky for me today. This was originally a comment meant as a reply. Ignore, please!

  • Tamara Hogan

Liam McIntyre is showing Comic-Con Farmer Tan Realness.

  • PaulaBerman

A universally cute line up! Norman Reedus is the best of the bunch, and that is saying something.

  • JasmineAM

    God bless you, Norman Reedus.

  • bellafigura1

Steven Yeun looks super sexy. Norman Reedus, well, I don’t know what to say.  He has fast-tracked himself to top of my “please be in the Magic Mike sequel” list.  I mean, zowie.  Just Zow.  Ee.

  • Rebecca Jay

Buncha cute boys and handsome men.  I like and want all of them.

  • guest2visits

They all look like they may be having a good time.
    Breaking Bad is fantastic.

  • EcstaticEgg

    Norman Reedus, yum yum yum

  • quiltrx

See, NOW I understand you, RDJ!  You think EVERY event is Comic-Con!  So in your mind, your mode of dress is always totally appropriate.  Carry on. 🙂

And DAMN Norman Reedus…I have a feeling you know EXACTLY what you are doing to us ladies.  I’ll go the trite route and just say that suit would look really good ripped up on my bedroom floor.

  • kikisayshi

I love me some good ole RDJ

  • I automatically translated “Stephen Moyer” to “Lady Clairol” in my head, just so you guys know.

  • naomiow

    Terry O’Quinn –
It’s San Diego – but he still wishes it were Hawai`i – loved seeing that my state rubbed off on him!!
Btw – it’s “Rubbah Slippahz” – unless you don’t mind every Hawaiian Bitter Kitten rolling their eyes at you  😉

  • hahahahah john locke, maybe the island told him to do that…

  • Call me Bee

Elijah FTW!  Plus–I was so surprized to see folks dressed as Wilfred at Comic-Con.  What’s up with that?

  • Is it weird that my reaction upon seeing Norman Reedus was “work, bish!” I guess “suave m-fer” is the guy equivalent?

  • Don’t tell him what he can or can’t do!

  • andreawey

  • drdarke

You see? Robert Downey, Jr. can clean up good!

Too bad he looks like his Korea IRON MAN 3 visit is being filmed for an episode of PUNK’D!
