Cathy Cambridge in Stella McCartney

Posted on July 19, 2012

Mrs. Cathy heard two bitchy queens from across the Atlantic complaining that she dresses too old for her age sometimes, and, after determining that she wouldn’t be allowed to have them beheaded, opted for shutting them up in less bloody ways.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge visits The National Portrait Gallery in London in an electric blue dress by Stella McCartney paired with Prada heels.

Stella McCartney Ridley Stretch Cady Dress. $885

Cute, Mrs. Cathy! These two queens have been shut the hell up.

Sure, it’s not really all that far outside her wheelhouse, but the unusual (for her) necklace really jazzes the look up and makes it feel a little more youthful than a lot of her default looks. Also, if it hasn’t been firmly established already, we are prepared to declare this blue her signature color. Hell, 9 times out of 10, it’s the only color she ever deigns to wear.

We are determined to bring back the use of “jazz” as a verb unironically. For some reason, it makes us laugh, as does the use of “jazzy.” Go ahead. Tell someone today, “You look really jazzy!” They’ll look at you funny. It’s hilarious.

Boob darts. Not very jazzy. This may be outside her wheelhouse, but it still harkens a wide *yawn* from me.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Yes — boob darts.  While I have a general idea of where a woman’s nipples are, and thus can extrapolate to the Duchess of Cambridge’s nipples, it feels like overshare for her to point them out so directly.

Also: still no baby bump, I see.

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

I’d settle for a burrito bump at this point.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Not only are they a bad idea, but they look like a mistake because of that odd little flap of fabric coming out of the dart. WHY?

Not that I’d say “Cathy Cambridge looks bad in this” — it would take a mighty terrible dress to make her actually look BAD — but bleah, Stella McCartney, what a weak attempt to add interest to a super-basic dress.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Words I thought I’d never hear: Cathy Cambridge in Stella McCartney. Maybe it was some kind of a trade off — I’ll sing at your mother-in-law’s Jubilee if you’ll wear my daughter’s dress.

        • Little_Olive

Oh, I love myself a conspiracy theory. Great dot-connecting ;)

      • Sartorial_She

That odd little flap of fabric turns them into boob fins. And they should be verboten.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Well, she always looks lovely and blue IS always gorgeous on her.  But this is a really boring look.  The bitter kittens have conditioned me to look for ways to hate Stella McCartney – and indeed, I find the darts unnecessarily bizzarre and unflattering.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/XAFAJ53QF3DLEFQB3WTLMRM75E MarinaB

I have a dress just like that, except it is from Target and costs like $30.  That leaves me over $800 extra!

    • AudreysMom

Agreed. This whole thing isn’t particularly youthful, necklace attempt and all. In fact, Cathy’s wearing it and it being in blue does wonders for the design. If she didn’t pay to have this worn, Stella’s shop was given a royal gift.

      • yetanotherLaura

I’ve read several places that Cathy never, ever accepts free gifts of clothing; she asks for a selection from a designer to be sent over, but then pays for what she picks out to wear.  That’s in addition to what she buys on sale, of course; she’s clearly been a great sale shopper over the years, and until she got married most of her designer wear was purchased at discounted prices, a practice I cannot bring myself to complain about.  So Stella’s shop gets publicity for something that the wearer actually bought, which I find a welcome change from all the freebies on most celebs.

      • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

Apparently, this was an Olympics-themed event and Stella McCartney designed the British Opening Ceremony looks, which explains why she’s wearing one of her looks.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I like Cathy’s look here.  I’m not fully sold on the Stella McC dress.  The exterior darts, with the deliberate reverse fold to them don’t entirely work as a design element, for me. In a sense, the thing that really elevates this for me, past her usual thing is the choice of jewelry. The necklace is great.

    • VanessaDK

I agree–but what elevates all her looks is that she gives such great face.  She manages to have an engaging smile whenever her pic is taken.  It is hard to resist someone who looks like she is genuinely enjoying life.

…and I totally agree about the necklace, too.

    • charlotte

“I’m not fully sold on the Stella McC dress.” Given that is is a Stella dress, we should almost applaud the designer. Different standards have to be set here, and this is relieving in contrast to what we’ve seen on Anne Hathaway recently. But yeah, I’m not fond of the boob darts, either.

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I agree on the boob darts, but the necklace is lovely and she does look age-appropriate.

She’s so beautiful and has such a genuine, generous smile, that it’s hard to fault her on anything.

        • ballerinawithagun

The color is fabulous! The inside out boob darts, not so much. I like the outside darts if they are stitched down in a decorative manner, not just loose and floppy.

      • Lori

Yes, this is good for a Stella dress, but that’s faint praise indeed given how awful so much of her stuff is. Cathy should not be wasting herself on the Stella.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Agree, but since Stella is a Brit designer Cathy is probably going to be wearing her occasionally simply to support the Brit design industry.

          • Lori

Honestly, she could do more to support the Brit design industry by pretending that Stella doesn’t exist.

Gawd I hate her clothes. She just pushes my bitchy button like no other designer.

          • NC_Meg

This is only the second time she’s worn Stella McCartney (first to Prince Philip’s bday last year, an awful red number also worn by Madonna) and the first to an official engagement/appearance so I don’t think we’ll see her in Stella all that often. I really think she only wore this dress because Stella designed the Olympic uniforms and she wanted to give a nod there.

      • http://twitter.com/pennyeager Penny Eager

Haha the shock of the thing is that Stella made something that doesn’t make the wearer look completely ridiculous!

    • Julaine

The necklace is lovely but when I found out the price I literally spit my coffee on my iPad. It’s Cartier and £49,000, supposedly. That is an incredible price for a piece without precious stones. Her spokesman stated “the necklace was her personal property and she had previously owned it” whatever that means.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Maybe a gift from Bill before she became Mrs. Heir presumptive.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

If that is indeed the case, it’s one more reason for us Cousins to appreciate Bill.

But I’d much rather have my $78,000 worth of jewelry in emeralds.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And noe of those washed out pale colored things, either.  We want us some EH MEHR ALDS!

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

Queen Mary, ERII’s grandmother, LOVED her jewels and had the enviable ability to wear staggering amounts without looking vulgar.

So yes — my $78,000 worth of EH MEHR ALDS have big carats to measure up to.

  • Nyltiak

She looks really good here. It’s a great shade of blue on her, and I think she’s looking less painfully thin.

  • VicksieDo

With that ring of hers, blue SHOULD be the only color she needs.  Boob darts are so bad though.

  • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

I’m getting a real Princess Letizia vibe from this – I like it. Still princessy, but a bit more modern.

  • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

Also, it never fails to surprise me how genuine she looks – girl always smiles like she’s happy to be there, no matter the event. That always makes a bigger impression on me than whatever she’s wearing.

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

She needs to show Victoria Beckham what a smile looks like. You can’t be unhappy looking at her. Her smile is totally infectious. I’m barely through my first cup of coffee on a gray day and I feel the corners of my lips involuntarily moving north when I see photos of Cathy Cambridge.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

She almost always looks genuinely happy, doesn’t she? After the miserable mess of his parents’ marriage, I’m glad for Bill and Cathy that they took their own sweet time getting to know each other and to tie the knot.

  • MrsJulien

The future Queen of England has reverse darts pointing at her nipples. Is she pregnant? Is this a sign that her nipples won’t just be for show anymore? Can Stella McCartney be over now?

  • sherrietee

We used to call our dog Jazzy so it just makes me smile wistfully.

  • allisankelly

I will never get behind darts being on the outside of a garment. Her hair (almost) always looks so shiny and bouncy!

    • call_me_schmeg

      those darts = nipple wings

  • afabulous50

I think its time for a new “do” for the locks.  She should shake it up a bit in the hair department….no pun intended.

    • Jessica Goldstein

If I had her hair, I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s gorgeous, and it suits her.

  • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

I was terrified to open this post when I saw the combo of Stella McCartney and Cathy Cambridge in my reader. The what ifs were too frightening to contemplate. But this is a very cute look and very low key and tasteful for Stella M. As other BKs have noted, the boob darts seem unnecessary but overall a nice little dress on a gorgeous woman.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Whether that smile is truly genuine, or studied as hell, it works like a charm, every time.  She’s lovely, and always seems fully engaged, wherever she is, whatever she is doing.  Stars? you could learn a MAJOR lesson from this relative newcomer to the spotlight. (whoops, meant to be in reply to VanessaDK, Sorry Ms V!)

  • sterlingrose

Hey she’s a royal. I can’t imagine the number of people who have “input” in her daily doings, especially how she looks.  Yeah, she is down the line, but I’m sure there is much protocol in how she looks when out and about.  And even if it there aren’t rules, I wouldn’t want to face the inlaws if I “disgraced” the image of a princess….

  • kckris

That color blue is amazing, but the pleat-thingies coming out of her nipples bothers me…

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

Cathy wins the slam down. She certainly showed you. Very jazzy. If you really want to get bitchy, focus on the fac the dress could use a bit of ironing.
Good hair. Good makeup. Good outfit. Good at working the camera. Can we know work at teaching  the gals…and guys… in the entertaining industry these same basic principles?

    • NDC_IPCentral

The Duchess was just getting out of a car, so she’d been sitting in the dress.  That means there’s have to be some wrinkling at the midsection and the seat.  I don’t think there’s an Insta-Steamer at the ready, just as she’s emerging, to tend to the normal behavior of linen/cotton when it’s being worn.  Wrinkles are normal consequences of use of the garment.

Schnazzy > Jazzy in the funny compliment department.

  • Ksagun13

Love the color and the silhouette, but I hate the darts.  They make me stare at her chest and that seems so wrong and disrespectful to the future Queen of England.

  • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

While I love this dress..actually no, I love this dress. It’s just that the combination of the waist seam and sheath style darting has my inner seamstress going “…pick…one? What?”

    Otherwise, she looks totally fab.

  • SewingSiren

She looks very well put together. The reverse darts are very edgy for her.

  • PRFan

The lady behind her in pic 5 is already copying the look.

Cute, but still a little dull. The color saves it from being totally blah. As others have mentioned, the “boob darts” are distracting, but perhaps they’re not that obvious in person. Once again, her best accessory is her fabulous smile.

I wonder what Stella charges for a nothing little dress like that.  The best I can say is that it’s not hideous.

Thanks for bringing back “jazz.”  It’s one of those words — like “fishy” — that just says it.

I’m a word girl and have to ask:  Did you deliberate whether it should be  ”…jazzes the look up?”  or  ”jazzes up the look?”

    • Little_Olive

      The caption says $885 (yikes).

I’m all for language. Can something be “jazzed down” though? Or is it always upwards?

      • alyce1213

I don’t think I’ve ever heard it, but why not?  Like Coco Chanel’s advice: Before you leave home, look in the mirror and remove one accessory — “Jazz it down.”

I think she looks good, as usual, but not exciting, which I think is her goal.

As for the exterior darts, I think that kind of feature should be way bolder if it going to be used at all. This just looks like an accident or afterthought. “Hey, I need an excuse to charge more than $800 for a shift dress. I know! I’ll jazz it up with external boob darts!”

( See what I did there? Heh)

  • Jecca2244

this is something I’d wear to work…if I had $900 to throw around. Pretty, but straight forward. Guess that’s the point?

With the exception of the inside-out darts, this is pretty inoffensive for a Stella McCartney; however, it also looks very similar to a dress I bought at Mango last year (sans inside-out boob darts).

Cathy looks pretty, but is she getting scary-skinny again?

This dress is Stella McCartney? Hard to believe…..I actually like it!  Well, I like it with the exception of the external darts.  I place that in the same category as the exposed zipper…makes the garment look like it’s inside out.  What’s next?  Exposed seams?  But be that as it may, I still like the simple yet sophisticated look of this dress, and the color is gorgeous.  And jazzy.

Inside-out boob darts.  As though Stella were saying, “I need to show off my prodigious tailoring skills, do take note”. Sigh.  Another victim falls.

Mmm not loving it so much. The idea is great for her but the high waist is neither here nor there, and the fit in the bottom is a bit loose.

Also, she looks almost emaciated. Eat Cathy! You won’t necessarily become Grandma Pooh Bear if you down a sandwich or two!

I wish the color was a wee bit less “cold”. Great to see her in a bright color though! Goes fantastically with her complexion.

Y’know, I’m getting really sick of the “eat a sandwich” comments. One, that’s just offensive, no matter who we’re talking about. Two, she’s slim. She’s always been slim. Can we stop harping on her size now?

      • Little_Olive

I get that she is naturally slim. I just see her thinner than before and kind of tired. It’s not the weight per se, it’s how the person looks a s a whole.

      • charlotte

Thank you. I hear those comments often enough myself and nobody seems to get that they are offensive.

      • Maggie_Mae

Yes!  She appears to be naturally slim–let’s not hear bitterness from those of us who aren’t.  That hair & that complexion prove that she is healthy.

From behind the Times paywall (where they call her Kate),

Olympics fever has apparently reached the highest echelons. Today the Duchess of Cambridge wore a necklace adorned with five rings as she attended an exhibition of athlete portraits.  The Duchess’s large, gold-coloured chain had a ring on each shoulder, another further down on each side and a large hoop at the bottom. She completed her Olympic look with a blue crepe dress by Stella McCartney, one of the official clothing designers for the UK Olympics team.

A St James’s Palace spokesman said of the necklace: “It’s a personal piece which she’s had for some time. It’s not an official Olympic item but it’s appropriate to wear it.”
Hmm… the font copied, too! Well, I’ll leave it as is.

  • MissAnnieRN

The fit on this is weird. I know she’s ultra slim, but she’s also the Duchess of Cambridge. You’d think designers would make a special Duchess size or one the Royal Tailors could do this a bit more justice. Color is great, too big, and as others have noted, the darts in the boobs are strange.

Hi!  I would have preferred the Stretch Cady Milos Dress in that dark red.  I checked the web site because when it says it’s a stretch dress I assume it’s supposed to be form fitting.  I think this is kind of hanging off her.  But I do love the necklace and think she looks wonderful, as always!

Honestly, I think that was probably intentional.  Her form is so bony for a form-fitting dress!

Somehow she looks great even though the necklace and darts, for all their jazziness, are making me wince.

  • Lilithcat

We are determined to bring back the use of “jazz” as a verb unironically. For some reason, it makes us laugh, as does the use of “jazzy.” Go ahead. Tell someone today, “You look really jazzy!” They’ll look at you funny.

Not here.  In my town, the words “jazz” (as a verb) and “jazzy”  never went away.

As to Her Grace, I find it astonishing that this dress, which to my eyes makes her look thin as a rail, is sparking pregnancy rumors!

    • Jessica Goldstein

Lilithcat, so far as I can tell, everything she wears or does sparks pregnancy rumors. Gaining one pound, losing one pound, wearing something fitted, wearing something loose, going on a public outing, not going on a public outing. I can’t imagine how annoying the constant uterus speculation must be!

  • sweetlilvoice

Adorable….but I’m not a fan of the darts. She can pull them off though with her frame.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I just told my co-worker she looks jazzy in her little chambray dress and yellow ballet slippers. She looked at me like I just done lost my mind. :)

Oh, and Cathy looks gorgeous. Love the simplicity of the dress and that beautiful blue on her.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The boob darts are rather odd; I suppose Stella felt she couldn’t just do a very basic dress without tweaking it.  That said, it’s a cute dress, the color is great on Mrs. Cambridge, so it’s OK in my book.

  • kimmeister

I don’t mind the reverse darts, but I do mind that that bottom of the dress looks like an empty sack on her, especially in that last shot.  Yes, we know she has no junk in the trunk, but clever tailoring can help with that.

Also, those have to be the most boring Prada shoes I’ve ever seen.

  • another_laura

I’m just kind of excited that she’s able to go outside in London without a coat on.  I’m heading there in a couple of weeks and the weather has been dreary as hell.

Oh yes, back to the Duchess.  Congrats on hem above the knee but I need a little more interest from her than a Stella McCartney electric blue dress with inside-out darts, which are ugly on anything.

  • jjfg

Still not loving Stella McCartney in general (love the boob darts comment! my thoughts, exactly), but Cathy sure does look adorable.  Necklace makes the outfit.

    Jazz hands!

Cartier necklace = $76,000, and it was purchased, not gifted. http://r29.co/MKvOjv

  • Carla_Charlton

    Perfect fit, as usual.

  • RzYoung

Well i’ll be damned : a stella dress i actually like…even thought the inside out darts give it an odd godzilla-costume vibe

  • guest2visits

    She was beautiful in this; very nice dress for her, even if a simple one. The shoes could be a little more interesting, or younger;
while remaining black. Yes to the necklace.

  • MilaXX

Lovely color on her and I like the necklace

Stella McCarney finally designed a dress that was not butt-ugly.  Unfortunately it is very boring.  Mrs. Cathy makes it look great.

let’s be honest, even when we criticize her, it’s all picking at minute details.  This girl is tall, slim, toned, pretty and seems like a good sport/down to earth kind of person (which seems to show in the photos somehow.)  As my grandma would say, She could wear a potato sack and look great.

I also crack up at jazzy. My friend (who is called Jasmine) is nicknamed Jazzy and I find it hilarious to no end.

I think CC is aborable, but the unfortunately placed outside darts make this look like a home-ec fail. Whose idea was it to put the business end of construction on public display anyway?

  • Caaro3

Thanks, TLo.  No need to take an Ambien tonight!

  • hero2012

EEK no little CLUTCH!!! …….She forgot it at home!!!…..now I see why she always has a clutch ,it makes her otherwise boring, boring outfits seem well put together.
And I cannot belive you guys did comment on the wrinkles or the awful darts on her dress!
I think the black pumps are an awful choice, would have preferred even her nude heels to this.. and her hair – she looks like one of the house wives with the dark tan and too long hair!

  • redgauntlet

It’s very simple, very clean, and yet it’s not very interesting. Then again, she’s not a model or an actress.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Weird boob darts.  Someone needs to put Stella M. in a box.  With a lid.

She looks beautiful! I’m not a Stella fan, but this dress is nice in its simplicity and color.  I even like the darts because they add a little something.  Props to the dress for coming out of the car with a few wrinkles, all of which disappear by the time Kate comes out of the gallery. Love the subtle Olympic-y theme. I expect a lot more red, white and blue from Kate in the next few weeks.

I love that she isn’t wearing those same ol’ court shoes! Sass it up, Cathy!

  • Kirsten Kirsten

OMG a tasteful and stylish Stella McCartney dress – i’ve never seen such a thing!

  • quiltrx

I really like the necklace.  And for once I don’t hate a Stella McCartney dress.

She should parade around in a red coat. History-buffs would love that.

  • sagecreek

Wait, that’s a Stella McCartney? But it’s so classic, and well-designed, and attractive…Sage is confuzzled.

  • dressagelibrarian

I had a dress just like this (except in red) in 1988 from Leslie Faye.  Yawn.

Mostly this actually looks like a dress, which is amazing for Stella McC. Although why she can’t figure out that the darts go on the inside of the construction, not the outside where everyone sees them, is beyond me.  It’s like wearing your bra on top of your dress, which I think I’ve seen and I hate.

  • Srw27

I still say she needs a cute hair cut, like a kicky (or jazzy?) bob that highlights her face. That long curled hair is doing nothing for her IMHO

  • Beth G

I love how the necklace against the blue of the dress echos her engagement ring.

  • BrightsideSusan

The darts look like a mistake I occasionally made back when I sewed my own clothes – but here mistake=fashion?
