Britney Spears in Hervé Léger

Posted on July 10, 2012

We don’t feature Brit very often, but we have two good reasons for that:

  1. She’s tragic.
  2. Her clothes are tragic.

Because of the former, we sometimes feel we can’t make fun of the latter, y’know? For instance:

Britney Spears attends The X Factor auditions in Greensboro, NC in an Hervé Léger dress paired with Valentino pumps.

Valentino Crystal-Coated Mesh T-Strap Platform Pump

Regardless of how the dress looks on her (way too tight, as per usual), we find her difficult to look at in pictures like this because she looks so desperately uncomfortable and unhappy. She’s wound so tight that she’s holding on to her hips like life preservers. We always want to tell her to relax and then we remember that she’s standing in front of shrieking fans and photographers, which makes relaxing impossible. And unfortunately for her, she doesn’t possess the ability to fake it till you make it. Some stars can shrug this kind of shit off like water but for others, you can see just how stressful and unpleasant they find the whole thing.

Having said all that, the dress is perfectly fine, if it is Britney-tight. The shoes are kinda fab in a slightly trashy-fun way, which suits both her and the dress to a T. The hair’s kind of sad, though. Still, as Britney outfits go, this is downright understated and chic.

It all just looks so exhausting for her, doesn’t it? But hey, if it matters to you, Brit (and we suspect it does), your bod looks pretty slammin’ lately.

She looks like she is about to fall apart.  And so does the dress.

    • Sobaika

Poor B 🙁 I used to love her back in the day (aka 2000).

      • HomeOfficeGirl

I love her still AS a pop star.  Love the music.  Hate the life and the drama and that she does seem so messed up.

        • I thinks she looks skanky with the over processed hair and the dress splitting at the

  • She looks good here, compared to other instances, but the look on her face destroys the whole ensemble!

  • RzYoung

Yeh, I feel uncomfortable looking at these too 🙁 She seems from a different era somehow.

  • Funkykatt

I thinks she looks skanky with the over processed hair and the dress splitting at the seams. Yech.

  • SapphoPoet

She does look a little uptight. And her dress is too tight (although I love the shoes). But overall, she looks healthy and in good shape. Baby steps.

    • Cathy S

That’s how I feel. She looks healthier than she has in a long time. I’m sorry that she looks so uncomfortable though. I wish she could relax a little more.

  • She looks SO unhappy. I like the shoes. But the weird thing about those pictures is that none of those people are looking at her. They’re all looking at their phones taking pictures of her, and it’s creeping me out.

    • formerlyAnon

      Modern times.

    • JosephLamour

That is an intensely creepy revelation.

  • sherrietee

As slamming as Spanx can make her, I suppose.  I feel bad for her.  She seems so unhappy.

  • AuntieAnonny

I was watching that Chris Crocker documentary recently and it had a clip of her surrounded by people with cameras and there she was, sitting on the side of the road crying and asking them to leave her alone. Looking at that first picture made my heart hurt for her.

  • Again, I quote the great John Lydon – “If you don’t want to be a pop star, just stop being a pop star.”

    • BritneyE

Britney can’t though because her father has complete control over everything in her career and her life. Although for whatever reason, he isn’t able to get her into a stylist’s chair to do something about her hair and eyebrows. I imagine if it was up to her she’d live somewhere quiet and just spend time with her sons and never subject herself to huge crowds and stressful public appearances.

      • Alisa Rivera

I’ve read that if she isn’t working she’s riding the crazy train so they keep her busy all the time to keep her from falling into a black hole. Very sad.

    • Ali

I think it’s a little bit more complicated than that for her, given how her life has gone. Sad.

  • MilaXX

Agree on all counts. I actually feel that way about her and Demi Lovato, which is why I don”t think having them judge X Factor is a good idea.

  • lydiabear

What’s wrong with her? She has hair elastics on both wrists – one of which is neon green. Did she think no one would notice? Is there no minion who can hold her hair accessories for her? So strange and sad.

    • sweetestsith

It’s always up for debate with Britney, but it’s entirely possible that she uses the elastics as a coping mechanism (popular form of therapy for people who self harm). It’s also possible that she just forgot to take them off before leaving the dressing room, so who knows… She’s clearly uncomfortable and unhappy though, I don’t even like her and I feel so bad for her.

  • Move on. Move on. Nothing to look at here. Brits run s around in next to nothing in her stage show ( all vocal prerecorded), but put a dress on her (time to go up a few sizes), and she looks awkward. A tight dress with peek-a-boo slits only makes the dress look tighter. Photo three: Is her shoulder flesh actually pouring out of the slit? All the teen girls behind her look better dressed…if not more age appropriate.  Just like JLO on American Idol, Brits will try to dress too young only to look foolish and give us plenty to yuk about. .

  • She makes me sad. I just get the feeling she’s desperately unhappy looking at her in these pictures :-[

  • lovelyivy

Yeah she is not fun to observe. She seems so fragile that it’s not fun to snark on her, and there is no joy in any of her work these days. I was never a big fan, but I did like some of her music (Slave for You is still the jam) and seeing her constantly looking like she’s about to fall apart is unpleasant.

Dress is cute though- this would be fab if she went up a size. And stopped killing her hair.

  • Pennymac

Poor Britney. She’s just a  sad little redneck girl with talent whose family life made her unprepared for fame whoring. And she has a mental illness that is horrible and misunderstood by most. I have patients who can’t feel comfortable in a room of more than twenty people. How this gal feels about being in front of the crowd while not lost in performance is obvious in her body language and her face.

That being said, this is a perfect, if too tight, Britney look.

    • BuffaloBarbara

Yeah.  I haven’t seen her perform, but presumably she’s got a little more energy and pep than she does in these pictures.  I wish there were a way for performers to be successful without having to do the fame whore stuff.  You couldn’t pay me enough to put up with being famous.

  • TomBord

The original mtv Lolita once again looks propped-up…….. Oops ya did it again child.

  • howdoilook

    Dear Britney,
    Hair ties are not bracelets.

    • angryparsnip

When I was picking up the pieces after my x walked out… doing all the stuff a Mum needs to do to keep the children in school, fed, pay bills, sell the house and move  while my x was in Italy summering in Italy with his new love…. I wore rubber bands on my wrist to snap when the stress build up. Just kinds of make you stop and think and then solve one problem at a time. Don’t know if it really worked or not but as I am a problem solver and don’t like to wallow in the bad stuff…. it made me feel more in control.
Maybe this is a coping thing with her ? or it just could be the fact as soon as she gets to her room she can pull up her hair and kick off her shoes. I will give her a pass on this one.

      cheers,  parsnip

  • Alisa Rivera

What gets to me are her dead, dead eyes.

    • NC_Meg

I’m convinced she’s on meds (or a combo of meds) that give her those eyes. I don’t remember her having such sad eyes before her breakdown.

  • She needs to steal Xtina’s stylist! After the previous season of the Voice, Xtina had a complete turn around with her hair/makeup/clothing and looks so much better. Brit is a lovely young lady and with the right elements she’d be back to slamming self, just a little more mature! You can do it Britney! make it happen! Designers should be throwing stuff at you to wear and the makeup and accessories will follow!

  • I always feel bad for her, she has lost that glow and just looks uncomfortable and unhappy, all the time.  This dress is typical of her, and honestly a little boring.

  • SignLadyB

Isn’t that funny. It took reading thru these comments to notice that it is true–everyone is taking her picture (and until the final photo, it appears they are all taking pictures of her back end). So what does this say about our culture? As for her outfit–pretty expensive rags not to have been fitted better, eh?

    • SapphoPoet

      I just noticed that–very creepy.

  • Spicytomato1

Girlfriend looks like she could use a long, quiet vacation somewhere far, far away from show business. Poor thing.

As for her ensemble, the dress looks like typical Britney. But the shoes are pretty stylish, except for the bedazzling. I love the retro quality of a t-strap.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

She REALLY doesn’t want to be there!

  • kikisayshi

Don’t get me wrong – I like Britney as much as the next girl, but she sure can make an expensive dress look like it came from the mall.

    • That mall carpet isn’t helping. I’ve been there, I remember it. She just needs a dress that fits, and maybe a little Katy Perry silliness. Both she and Xtina have gotten stuck in their sex-bomb mode.

  • MzzPants

She’s got the body to wear something too tight and get away with it.  I cannot criticize, either.  She looks so fragile.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Sad to look at her, isn’t it. She’s not even trying to werq the shoes or the dress. Her body language is screaming “I HATE ALL OF THIS”. If gossip rumors are to be believed (when are they?), she’s not doing this 100% out of her own free will either.

  • rolacus2

I refuse to tackle Brit with criticisms since she might break down. Instead I’ll sling them at the crowd of annoying parasitic plebians behind her and taking photos of her ass in the last photo.

-Girl on far left. Your dress looks like hotel carpeting. I love your hair and shoes even if you have no business wearing open toes since your big toes look like they’ve been hammered to the side
    -Zebra print girl. Just no
-Orange skirt girl. I guess your ensemble is “okay” but your shoes are awful. A boring gray, flat, and a little too casual. Do something with your hair
-Tall creeper in the blue. Nothing to say on his outfit, but he should try not reaching his arms around someone head just to take a photo of Brit’s ass. Disturbing. Though not as disturbing as his slasher smile and gawky looks.
-Guy with fedora. Straw fedoras are not cool or hip. You look like posing hipster. Ew.
-Guy in blue. Find some pants that fit. They’re too long and begging, and so is your shirt. Combine that with your large ass and you look like a penguin.
-Woman in pink. Lady… you’re a big gal, try not to wear a bright pink low slung number that’s put you on the front page of “people of walmart”

    • Hiptobesquare

  • Hiptobesquare

I wish she would just leave the business. She’s not suited to it, obviously.  Her hair looks damaged and sad, her smile looks desperate and fake, and those legs…as good an argument for hosiery as I can imagine.

    Tragic really is the word.

    • rivula

What the hell is wrong with her legs?

    • Chelsea Purvis

“and those legs…as good an argument for hosiery as I can imagine.”

This is sexist body snarking, and it has nothing to do with her outfit.  God forbid her skin have some texture– maybe she should put a bag over her head too?

  • Much better than usual and about 3 inches more hem, which is a relief. Wish she would try something not skin tight. Also? a relief she’s not wearing some lame boots with this dress. Definitely an improvement

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

she looks tired and like she’d rather be at Wal Mart in her cut off sweatpants and flip flops looking for plastic stuff to take to a family reunion picnic.  poor old thing.

  • MK03

But it’s Herve Leger. Isn’t is supposed to be so tight you can’t breathe?

  • mhleta

No, I can’t get with this even out of a sense of charity. The dress looks like they had to cut slits in it to relieve some of the pressure.
And, are those hair elastics on her wrists? Oy vey, what a mess.

  • ccm800

I’ve never been a fan of her cereal box pop at all – but man this one makes me sad. She always looks tortured. She has a bit of that Marilyn tragic about her, not much of the magic MM had but the tragic. She ought to just disappear – but when you sell it, it ain’t yours to decide what to do with anymore.

    • reebism

Exactly, you couldn’t have caught me listening to Britney as a teenager, but pictures like these make me want to go, “hey Brit, let’s ditch these losers and go play Mario Kart and eat junk food for a while.”

  • quiltrx

She looks like she’s holding in a fart.  Or wondering if the dress is so tight it’s just going to roll up from the bottom like a windowshade.  I like the neckline of the dress, but then it all just kind of goes astray.

  • Little_Olive

Her eyebrows always look wonky and kind of unfinished. The person who does them should be fired.

She carries a “natural” look way better and I think she should stick to that, at least hairwise.

Meanwile, where is Xtina? We haven’t seen her in a long time.

  • I want to give her a hug and go shopping for cute blouses and jeans together.

Poor girl–you’re right, she just looks *exhausted*.

  • n a

Thanks T-Lo for opting not to Brit brash.  After they go to pieces, it feels extra mean to me- she was close to real being a legit tragedy there for a while, no?

  • guest2visits

Although this is a nice dress; it doesn’t fit and just makes her look alittle chubby. Great shoes. But she’s standing like she always has.
I think the posture, the dancing, the voice, the personal style and poise takes a dedication and discipline Britney has never had.
She’s only around because she’s got any number of people counting on the industry she provides if they can keep her propped up.
I don’t hate her; (well, just a tiny bit) but I’m always amazed by what people will accept as a mega-talent, or a star.

  • EEKstl

The dress has a nice neckline but of course way too tight even for HL.  I actually like the shoes.  This almost works…but she’s just not there yet.

  • She needs a good friend who can bring her laughter and relaxation (in a healthy way), and choose outfits which show off her beauty without looking tacky. Okay, okay, I’m having one of those moods where I see the unhappiness in everything and want to fix it. I blame hormones.

  • jmorino08

I love that you guys just called Valentino shows trashy. You’re the best!

  • Christine Marie

Remember that little argument we had about January Jones and her mommy pictures? You are forgiven after hearing why you don’t feature Britney more often. I knew you two are sweeties.

  • granddelusion

    No. 1. In a word.

  • janetjb

    I feel bad for her.

  • sockandaphone

I know half of the time she looks like one step away from tragedy but I love my queen b, hot mess or not.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Love the shoes.  But the poor girl’s eyes just look dead, and her body language speaks volumes.  I feel so badly for her.  I wish she could have the life she wants, instead of the one other people want for her.

  • j_anson

Oh Brit. Brit, no. I agree, I can’t even wish her ill; she seems like she’s had a genuinely hard life (as opposed to the many Hollywood stars where one just wishes they’d stop complaining about the TERRIBLE STRESSES of being rich, beautiful, and famous, you know?)

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Great dress and shoes.  Although if those slits at the waist were gone, I think the dress would be better.  And it’s probably time to think about giving her hair a rest.

  • I agree — who would’ve thought that Britney would become such a tragic figure. Every time I see a photo of her these days, I think “Oh, the poor thing.” Bless her heart.

  • ghopping

This is so so sad. 🙁

  • LinXGUA

The girls behind her look so cute (and “summer-y”). I wish she dressed in colours like them. But then she wouldn’t be the Dark Britney we all know. Sigh.

  • Corazon Nunez

Does anybody else think it’s kinda weird that not a single person in every photo is actually looking at Britney? They’re all staring at their phones, taking pics. Huh.

  • ugly knees

  • aristida_girl

poor girl, she should go home to her babies

  • Rand Ortega

What is it w/the Marilyn fascination this country continuously manufactures? The tragic innocent whose talent (w/ Brit that’s a definite stretch) & life are ultimately destroyed by fame?
All I see is the most minimal of ability unable to handle the pressure & desperate to be that little girl from LA (Louisiana).

  • bellafigura1

Ack, poor kid.  Nice shoes though.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i hope she doesnt read what the web says about her.
not that the original post was too bad & certainly not all of the comments–but some of them, you know…..

she looks like a regular person stuck in irregular circumstances. yes, i know there are many many people who think they wish they were stuck in her circumstances, but theyre people who generally dont understand her circumstances. i think this is what makes them hate her [& others, of course] so much. & yes, i acknowledge, she did jump through endless & stupid hoops to put herself there. otoh, i doubt even she knew what it was gonna be to be this year after year after year after year–especially after the public went fickle. & since she doesnt seem like someone who can easily w/stand a fickle public….. wearying. wearying for her & for her less committed audience, to say the least.

    • minnye

Internet commenters can be subhuman. Some family members of mine were featured on national news recently after losing their home in a fire and some of the comments were absolutely horrible. Granted, they are regular people who didn’t put themselves out there like famous people do, but yeah. I don’t wish internet crap-slingers on anyone, not even my least favorite celebrities.

  • She does look better than usual, overly tight dress, bad hair and all.

  • MK programming gone wrong.

  • KC

So, somehow I was able to go to a live taping. I wasn’t super close but I could definitely see the judges very well. Whats weird is the dress looks like it fits perfectly on her in person. It looks tight, but not nearly as tight as it does in these photos. And she is much skinnier in person than in photographs (so is Simon, which is surprising). She was the quietest judge, some people thought she was a bit unfriendly, but she seemed nice enough. Her opinions weren’t bad though she didn’t speak a lot. When she did elaborate a bit I thought she had good reasons for why she liked or didn’t like a person.

  • joe_tey83

She seems like the kind of person who will be perfectly happy working a regular job and hanging out with her girlfriends laughing and gossiping about shit. Instead, she’s being pushed and shoved around and manipulated and so messed up she can’t even grasp the fact that she has enough fck you money to just ditch this whole business. And now, she’s being placed as a judge on a reality show singing competition even though she obviously can’t sing that well – all for the sake of generating headlines and publicity for the show.

  • GTrain

    Amen to this entire post

  • Candigirl1968

Why Brit insists on those Leger dresses – which NEVER do anything for her – is beyond me.

  • Look at her. Look at the people behind her. Look at her. Look at the people behind her. She looks better already doesn’t she?

  • Allison Shannon

I LOVE those shoes. I don’t think they’re trashy at all.
