Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on June 19, 2012

You guys! Zooey went out in an outfit about which we have not one complaint!

Well. That’s not entirely true.

Zooey Deschanel attends 2012 Critics’ Choice Television Awards in an Oscar de la Renta dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps.

Oscar de la Renta Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Chantal Stafford-Abbott

But she looks cute, right? Perfect dress for her.

Unfortunately, the dress is the only thing she got right. The purse is too matchy and doesn’t really go with the dress, style-wise. The nails are an abomination and when Oscar de la Renta lends you one of his spectacular (and very expensive) dresses, it behooves the wearer to not have nails like someone who works at Piercing Pagoda in the mall. Also, the hair’s kind of a mess and the makeup’s weirdly unflattering. The shoes are okay, but Lorenzo thinks they were a boring choice.

Hey, you guys! Remember when we said a little while ago that we had no complaints? Total bullshit!

    Piercing Pagoda! *SNORF*

    • Piercing Pagoda!  *HONK*

      • I mean i get the whole let’s have cool looking nails, but you can put on acrylics just for the night..MsnGetAmazingWork.notlong.com

      • SRQkitten

        NAILED it!

  • She’s very much into nail art, it seems. Her instagram is filled with nail photos. Love the dress, not the shoes. I don’t like red and black together.

  • sleepycat

I feel like she might need a No No hair trimmer, it sort of looks like she has a mustache. The dress is gorg, but the tween nails should never! EVER! be worn with a OdlR dress

    • DeborahJozayt

Holy cow you’re right about the mustache. She could do the acrylic nails for a day if she got them properly soaked with solvent. Removing them on your own if what ruins your natural nail.

    • LP

There’s some celebrity closeup thing of her where she does have a mustache under all the cake makeup.  The cake makeup really emphasizes it.  I’m not saying women should be required to have totally hairless faces, but if you’re going to wear that heavy of face makeup, you have to smooth the mustache area down a bit.

  • Joel Jakobsson

She looks twice her age. Whoever is doing her makeup should be fired.

    • call_me_schmeg

it’s like she’s one of those girls who has been doing her makeup the same way for years and hasn’t adjusted anything as she’s aged.

      • Lilak

Same observation/complaint I have re Cathy Cambridge, frankly.

        • call_me_schmeg

yes!!! cathy’s eyeliner drives me BANANAS.

          • MilaXX

Cathy really needs to get a makeup artist. Either allow them to show you some new tricks or change how you do your face.

    • hmariec19

I think you mean “set on fire.”

    • Celandine1

That has got to be the worst makeup I have seen her sporting in recent memory. The makeup artist should be ashamed.

  • Merely from the thumbnail picture, I KNEW you’ll say something about her hair. Ha ha.

  • Funkykatt

Do these award happenings never end?

    • Of course not! For fame whores, it’s like breathing. Gotta do it every day, whether you want or not. Naturally, most of them want to.

  • jmorino08

How do make up artists manage to make her face look so much unlike her actual face?!?

    • RzYoung

I’m starting to wonder if she has any facial features that we’d actually recognise…for example, if she didn’t have the fringe and the eyeliner and all her hair in her face we wouldn’t know who she is

      • brokephilosopher

        and the fake lashes!

  • DeborahJozayt

I will tackle that model for those shoes, maybe try to get that brooch if the model doesn’t put up much of a struggle.

I wouldn’t hate the hair if it was symmetrical. The side part is too father-daughter dance with this outfit. The cheeks are as pink as Emma Stone’s eye makeup from yesterday. The lip color looks nice with the dress.

  • NurseEllen

I’m glad she switched out the belt on the dress, I hate that metal buckle on the one the model is wearing.  It pulls all your attention away from the amazing decoration.  But one good belt decision does not atone for the purse (blah), the makeup (odd), and the nails (just plain weird).

And to quote Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland”, “A very merry unbirthday to you!”

  • Pants_are_a_must

My goodness, she went from crazy doll cosplayer to harried career mom, make up-wise. But which I mean, not very wise.

Also, her hairstylist needs to stay fired.

And I still don’t like her.

*snaps fingers and exits stage left*

    • lordandtaylor

I stand with you. I just do not like her. The three guys carry her show. But since she is the producer, she gave herself more and more lines to get back in the limelight. It did not work…ratings tanked.

  • RzYoung

I’d love to see all her hair in a topknot, she could still work the cutesy look but just without all that hair in her face.

  • Hetha Innis

Wish she’d left that belt alone. An undo with earrings would be nice as well. But hell, she’s looking pretty put together here. Love that dress!

    • Hetha Innis

undo=UPdo. But undo that mermaid crap.

      • sleepycat

You can edit your posts. The link is on the lower right hand side by the Like and Reply links at the bottom of your post! I agree with your statement though! 🙂

  • I HATE side hair….

  • Pupioso

The shoes are terrible. The purse is matchy but not the worst I’ve seen her. All in all she looks good in the dress and the belt looks good. The hair? Meh. Like I said I’ve seen worse on her.

  • CassieLee22

Totally agree with you about everything else, ESPECIALLY the hair, but the dress is fantastic!!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The dress is great for her-great color, silhouette. Now, if she could just lose those Piercing Pagoda nails and the matchy matchy purse!

  • nannypoo

I am one of apparently very few people who think she’s talented and attractive, but this is just bad. The dress is pretty, but what happened to her face? Her makeup is awful.

    • sleepycat

Wait there are only a few of us?

  • Magatha

Okay, the shoes are anti-summer, and her face and hair look kind of tousle-y, but over all, I like it. It’s *Zooey Deschanel*. I expect a level of messy whimsicality with her.

I figured out why her eyes look strange to me. She has virtually no limbal ring – that dark border ringing the iris. It’s not something anyone can work on (except with contact lenses), it’s just what you get when you’re born. But I think a limbal ringless iris looks ethereal and a bit strange. This is something about which I never expected to opine.

    • Nopinkertons

Oh, is that what’s up with her eyes?  I thought someone just got a little overenthusiastic with the red-eye removal.

I used to have a rule that you couldn’t trust anyone who wore their hair so that you couldn’t see their ears (the reverse, that you can trust anyone whose ears you CAN see, was not true).  I may have to change the rule to apply to heavy sheepdog bangs.

    • Qitkat

And here I was thinking that she has pretty eyes, or would if the bangs weren’t so long or the makeup heavy/wonky. At least she smiles with both her eyes and her mouth.

I like the red dress with black shoes, they match her hair. Didn’t occur to me they were anti-summer, since celebrities don’t pay much attention to seasons like us regular people.

      • Magatha

I didn’t say her eyes weren’t pretty! They just look unusual to me. It’s true, I think I prefer dark eyes, or light eyes with dark limbal rings, but Zooey’s eyes are just fine. I agree with you about how charming it is to see her smile with her eyes *and* mouth, without being afraid of scrunchiness.

But I still don’t like the shoes. Should be more sandally and less black. It has been very hot where I live, so I think my feet were feeling sorry for her feet. The sympathy is useless and misplaced, but I couldn’t help it, especially since my toes were also yelping about the extreme pointyness and stilettotude.

        • Qitkat

Didn’t mean to imply something I know you didn’t say. They are unusual. I never realized what limbal rings are, or that hers don’t exist.

As for the shoes, I feel sorry for many who appear on these pages, the pointiness and stilettotude (good word!). OUCH. I could never wear most of what appears. Shoe designers go for the drama and occasional beauty; nevermind that misery, bunions, blisters, corns, plantar fasciitis, squidged toes, swelling and pain are the result of trying to look fashionable. My feet will now get off their soapbox. And go put on some pretty summer flat sandals.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

I do loves me a red dress.

  • True story: I moused over this post in the homepage and read “You guys! Zooey went out in an outfit about which we have not one complaint”. I immediately exclaimed “Bullshit!” (I work from home so spontaneous bursts of vulgarities are expected and encouraged). Glad to know I get to keep my TLo card.

  • guest2visits

Agree.  The dress looks wonderful on her – but the hair and her posture aren’t working it. The nails: awful.

  • RE: hair and makeup…

I mean, at least she’s not wearing a third of her body weight on her face and her head, you know? I’m not saying i love it, but I appreciate that she toned it down.

Dress is cute. Poor accessories all around, as the wise men said above.

  • You guys can complain about her anytime. Dying at the “Piercing Pagoda” remark.

  • SapphoPoet

Love the dress. Wish she had kept the belt; would have kept it from looking so twee. The nail art is terrible, as is the purse and shoes. So.Close, Zooey!

  • TheOriginalLulu

I’ll never hate on multi-colored nails, as they were a part of my youth, but there’s a time and a place for that sort of thing and wearing an Oscar gown to an awards show is not it. She’s young, but she’s old enough to know that.

It’s such a pretty dress and it really suits her, but I’m not digging the hair and make-up. She kind of looks like she was hanging out with her friends, knocking back a few Heinys when she suddenly realized she had somewhere to be, so she grabbed the dress from behind her bedroom door, threw it on and ran out the door.

  • BazoDee

I didn’t notice the nails until you mentioned them -I was was tooo distracted by her make-up. Yikes. I miss the belt, the length doesn’t seem ideal (but that’s a quibble) and the little locket jewelry seems really out of place.

  • Shoulda’ been a ponytail. Would have been so perfect. I don’t mind the purse or the boring shoes (cause they are both pretty) but the hair. Oy the hair.

  • Call me Bee

You are right…mostly.  Perfect dress for her, but I think the shoes are perfect as well, and the bag is the right style but the wrong color.  Hair & makeup…are ok.  I guess.   All in all–she looks cute.  Of course!

  • I don’t like the length. Stumpifying.

  • BrooklynBomber

Everything you said. Especially Piercing Pagoda.
Surprisingly, the shoes on the model are equally wrong.

  • Bleagh.

  • It looks like she shaved the left side of her head, no?

  • SpcilK

Totally Agree! I am so disappointed, she made Oscar’s magnificent dress look like it was from Century 21’s bridal department. Employ a stylist Bezach! Fix your hair and leave the Harajuku nails for MTV, or Nickelodean award shows.

  • Joyce VG

But the dress is so pretty!

  • Lina_bee

I LOVE Oscar de la Renta. It hits me out of the blue sometimes. So perfect. And what she’s done with it is a crime. (I refuse to believe a stylist was involved in this mess.)

  • Hate it!

  • lordandtaylor

Cute dress on an over rated, and over exposed actress. Next time, please show the three guys from the show. Cuties all!

  • unbornfawn

The dress is OK, your comments are spot on. I think the make-up makes her look old. I think she could do with a change-up in her hair style once in a while, but throwing it all to the side, is not it.

  • hilbobaggins

Beautiful BEAUTIFUL dress, but she’s somehow turned it into something polyesterish you’d pick up at Daffy’s.   The makeup and hair are just bad and age her terribly.

  • marilyn

Re the dress:  I think she made it look better by not wearing the metal belt buckle.  I think she looks fine otherwise.

  • alyce1213

    Props for no black tights.

  • TieDye64

She should fire whoever is doing her makeup.

  • inprovo

Hey, her neck’s not broken!  She looks like a functioning adult for once.

  • charlotte

Wouldn’t this also be a very nice dress for Rashida Jones?

  • I’m just glad she’s not wearing opaque black tights with it. THEY DON’T GO WITH EVERYTHING, ZOOEY!

  • I was going to say the dress looks a skoosh too long.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

How old is she?  Because she looks, as grand pap said “Rode hard and put away wet” in these photos.

  • MilaXX

Oh Zoey this was a gimme and you kinda blew it. The dress with the buckle would have looked great. It would have helped the somewhat bland shoe work just fine. Instead you remove the buckle and instead carry  the cheapest looking bag you can find. I get that you are “quirky”, but all the “quirkiness” in the world does not make yellow nails work with a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta dress. I can give a pass on the makeup because when I saw this on ustream it actually looked okay, so I’m assuming it just didn’t photograph well.  Speaking of which I have no idea why this wasn’t televised because watching it online was a pain in the rear.

  • chelwi

    She isn’t wearing black tights!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s too long, the dress. just by about two inches but still.
but the nails right here right now are more etsy than mall. i know that at any other time in the history of the world mall would be the call. but at this skinniest of minutes having crap & froufrou on yr fingernails is less [as my librarian friend says] ghetto than it is hippie. [she says if yr a librarian you can deviate into the realm of hippie & still keep yr job–but not the other way. she wouldnt come up w/ these words on her own {at least not ghetto} so it’s kind of remarkable to me what librarians are discussing these days. anyway.] i know it doesnt seem like a hippie affectation, this fingernail business, but it is & as ZD is like etsy’s patron adorkablette sainte [feh feh feh feh feh], she almost is compelled to wear them.

    • Qitkat

Sometimes you are so funny. I say with love.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

oh, i am funny on purpose. for real.

  • i kinda wish the hem was 1 inch shorter. Maybe 1 1/2 inches.

  • michelle shields

I hate, hate, hate the nails! Bugs the shit out of me when I see this new trend.

  • cleep1000

The dress is a 10. Everything else is sub-par. What happened to her big, beautiful eyes? Why is her face so shiny?

  • hillmad

I’m just so happy she didn’t wear black tights with this!

  • turtleemily

In the last picture especially she looks older.

  • Oh, girl.  That makeup does not flatter.

  • Celandine1

Baby steps Zooey, baby steps, I know you must have been really uneasy going without black tights.

  • StephanieLovesTLo

Hate everything about it except the dress, including the annoying, “adorkable” pseudo-actress wearing it. Her makeup gay made her look 40 years old; he must dislike her as much as I do. “Is that rain???” No, it’s the angels sobbing at how over-played you are. Get dressed, clean the house and go get your own tomato soup.

  • bellafigura1

Every detail and accessory has contributed to making a wonderful dress look average. And, I can’t see anything but the nails. If that’s not stone cold evidence of how details can derail an entire look, I don’t know what is.  She should be punished somehow by Mr. de la Renta.

  • lucasuk82

The dress amazingly beautiful, but who DID that to her face?  I’m watching 500 Days of Summer right now, and the comparison is horrific.

  • quiltrx

    LOVE the dress, very Zooey!

  • formerlyAnon

I dislike most of what she wears, at least, on her. This dress is FABULOUS for her. Can’t argue with the criticisms at all, but for me they pale against the wise decision to wear the dress.

  • adnama79

At least she looks like a g-d grownup for once.  Huge progress!

The nails are juvenile in addition to being event-inappropriate.

  • Agreed on all points!
Zooey tends to do funky nail art like little tuxedos on the red carpet. I don’t think it’s really suitable and doesn’t fit her style like it would Katy Perry or Lady Gaga. If she’s going for that retro, twee, vintage vibe, then those nails don’t fit at all.
