Katy Perry in Vawk

Posted on June 18, 2012

Hey, remember last week when Katy showed up dressed like a flapper and we said she’d probably be back to looking like Jem and/or one of the Holograms within a couple days?

Katy Perry attends the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto in a gown by local designer Vawk paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

Vawk Resort 2012 Collection

We know you, Katy Perry. Better even than you know yourself. Hit us up if you want to know what you’re going to look like in a week or two.

Although truth be told, you look more like one of Jem’s rivals from The Misfits rather than a true Hologram.

I actually kind of love this dress on the runway. It’s interesting and even kind of pretty. But in real live (ie on Katy) it just looks cheesy.

    • Linda Taylor

These kids are all under 10. Why would someone do that?..DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

      • Well hello spammer, I see you’ve changed your name…

  • RzYoung

Those hooks on the bodice are working OVERTIME. Can’t say she looks bad though…for her, in the context of KP of course

    • Peri7473

Actually, i don’t think that the hooks are straining at all.  i think that they were just placed poorly in the dress.  there is no other evidence of strain on any of the other parts of the dress in the same area.  i think that they are just the way they are.

      • 3boysful

I think you’re probably right, but to me they appear painful anyway.  That’s tender skin to have all those hooks there!

        • ballerinawithagun

Usually when a designer uses hooks in that manner, there should at least be a grosgrain ribbon liner under the hooks so that the skin doesn’t show and doesn’t become irritated. Since this is a “local” designer, perhaps not very experienced with this type of thing.

    • drdarke

I’m just waiting for her to get into her rainbow chariot pulled by six winged horses with flaming manes, and flying it into battle against Russell Brand’s lawyers – who won’t know WTF hit them!

Wow – that’s so insanely horrible it comes all the way back around to awesome. The model looks bored – KP looks like Xena’s sadistic lesbian lover.

  • This is Katy Perry, serving up the Katy Perry Brand to the fans.  No real problems here, in that regard.   the shot showing under her arm on teh side, is unfortunate, since we get to see how hard that bodice is working to stay closed around the girls.

    • “Katy Perry Brand” is a rather unfortunate choice of words, but I have to concur.

      •  Oh and believe me it was entirely intentional.  (snert)

    • MilaXX

You should see the pic of her surrounded by these little girls all dressed n some of her past looks. One little girl is wearing a t shirt with cupcake boobs. These kids are all under 10. Why would someone do that?

      • Verrrrry good question.

      • It’s Katy Perry.  She’s like an ambition shark and if she isn’t dressed in costume or staging a stunt to prove how very famous and relevant she is she’ll just die.

        • meowing

I feel the same about Gaga.  Refuse to call her a “Lady.”

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Your comment reminds me of the time I was working in a (very conservative) Doctor’s office and one of the part time girls showed up one afternoon with a shirt that had pictures of King Tut on each breast and the caption “How do you like my Tuts?”  …..They made her put on a sweater.

        • LesYeuxHiboux

My mother had that shirt, and wore it often. She thought it was hilarious.

  • I’m glad she’s back with the betty page bangs though, I always thought those looked nice on her.

    • AthenaJ

With the purple hair and costumey outfit, I’m thinking Bettie Page meets X-Men. And you know what? I actually kinda like it!

  • sweet baby jeebus. no no no no no.

  • The closing on the side of that dress is a crime.

  • lizajane1776

Jem and the Holograms is mid-80’s. I get an early 80’s, villain from Flash Gordon vibe from this outfit.
    Or maybe the Misfits.

    • vanjar

I also get the Flash Gordon vibe.
Blake’s 7 Servalan would have rocked this outfit as well.

    • nomoreprinces

I think she’s very nearly a dead ringer for Stormer of the Misfits.  All she needs is the lightning bolt make up.

  • suzq

Katy was on the Graham Norton show this week (BBC America.)  Her grandmother makes fun of her purple hair.

  • jeneria

I hate her.  She tries too hard, she can’t sing, she can’t act.  Take away the giant boobs and she’s nothing.  If she were to star in a Jem movie, I would cry because that would mean the end of my childhood.  TMNT, Smurfs, Transformers, Wildcats, Garfield, My Little Pony (thank you, Bronies) they’ve all been stolen and redone poorly.  Leave Jem alone!

    • AthenaJ

She seems like a nice person and I’m sure she works hard (that’s a whole lotta image to keep up), but you’re right – without those tata’s, I doubt Katy ever would have become famous.

Sharing the Jem love over here, too! A few years ago I was Jem for Halloween, and it was awesome!

  • greyhoundgirl

    Got to admire her gutsiness.

  • Katy is wearing it better than the runway model. I think it is fun, fabulous, and very her.

  • It’s amazing how you can have so much fabric around you and still be almost naked. Too much transparency.

  • LOOOOOOL! While it’s true she looks like one of The Misfits, it looks to me more like a character from She-Ra. Like an egyptian-inspired villain.

    • With a little bit of Gozer the Gozerian.

    • Little_Olive

Totally -more like She-Ra herself gone bad though. And I am not loving the reference. It’s both literal and half-assed at the same time. How can that happen?

  • MilaXX

I don’t know if you’re going to cover it or not, but there was much fug happening at the Much Music awards. Katy wasn’t the only culprit. In fact, that “Call me, maybe” girl wore a dress similar to Katy’s.

  • sweetlilvoice

I think she looks a bit more like She-Ra. The Misfits wore a lot of neon and animal prints. Yes, I own the DVDs….

    • Celandine1

Ok now I am jealous, I want those DVDs. Although a friend told me that Netflix is strreaming the show now.

  • schadenfreudelicious

it feels very wonderwomany to me, she can yank that sheer skirt part off later and go fight crime….

    • MaryMitch

That was my immediate thought too!

  • Alisa Rivera

My husband just said, “She’s a drag queen.” Can’t really argue with that.

  • Isn’t this designer Sunny Fong, the second winner of Project Runway Canada?

    • Yes, and generally I ADORE his stuff- if he’d competed on the US version, he’d be a star.

I know most aren’t gonna like this, but I think you have to go with the “Katy Perry curve”, and I think she looks pretty good here.

    • kingderella

so hes still around. good for him! hes so talented.

  • Catiline

    Stormer, no!!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

This was sewn in someone’s basement in anticipation of the next Oklahoma Science Fiction Fantasy Convention.

    • Lizzyisi

Your description is spot on! Even the runway version looks like cheap costuming for a low-budget bride of Dracula movie, but it on Katy Perry and it looks like a costume for a late-night-cable skinflick about the bride of Dracula.

She’s *always* in a costume of some kind, but usually, they don’t look like costumes designed by a teenager in the basement without any understanding of clothes.

    • Ha ha. It does look like something Wonder Woman (or her mom) would wear for a red carpet event.

  • Xena, Warrior Princess.  With apologies to Xena.

  • nannypoo

I like it. It looks like her. Still hate the hair, though.

    • terekirkland

Is this even hers? Looks like an ugly wig to me. Blech.

  • I like it on her mainly it’s because it elicits the vibe that she raided the negligee collection of Zena, Warrior Princess. And that sort of rocks.

  • Featuring ELVIRA 2015

  • Bree The Vole

For some reason I keep reading Vawk as Wank. This leads to some unfortunate associations.

  • MK03

Everything she touches turns to skank.

  • I was just coming in here to say Misfits, I love this blog!!

  • meowing

I’d love to be with her in 20-30 years, sitting on her sofa, flipping through her phone pictures from this time (or whatever device there will be then–maybe thought projection?).  Hope she’ll sigh and say it was a hell of a lot of fun, while currently wearing elegant black pants and a white silk bouse.  Without blue hair.

  • She could give Stannis Baratheon’s red witch a run for her money in this.

  • minnye

Xena, yes! She should stay with the cheesy/sexy/cartoon looks. That way I can sort of stand her. I utterly hated what she did with that beautiful beaded dress and the flapper costume.

  • jmorino08

As if I didn’t love you guys enought alread, you have to go and whip out Gem and the Holograms references!

  • lordandtaylor

Looks like Wonder Woman’s kid sister. The tweens think she is soooo cool. To the rest of us, she just looks cheese-a-rific.

  • SapphoPoet

Wonder Woman goes to the Oscars.

But I have to say, I think this is kind of fabulous. I bet it looks great in motion.

  • Le_Sigh

    She-Ra’s dark-evil-twin-sister-nemesis!

  • Celandine1

LMAO at The Misfits. Maybe she is auditioning for the next Thor movie, because she is looking like a goth Valkyrie. Now I can hear Wagner in my head.

  • sleepycat

I think I am going to be Jem for Halloween this year because you linked it to a video. Tragically, my young gay self would have never consciously seen it as a I was not even 1 when it went off the air.

  • Lina_bee

Srsly Misfit, and kind of gross. The runway version looks so cute and fun and airy, but Ms. Hudson’s version looks like she got hit with a bucket of water and is now melting, melting, aiiiie…

  • unbornfawn

I’m getting a sort-of Valkire Wonder Woman vide from this outfit. Katy don’t ever change!

  • Laylalola

The Goddess Isis, Isis, Isis. Too bad she’s no longer with Russell Brand — he probably would have been game to appear as Shazam!

  • The top bit looks like a superhero costume.

  • This is truly, truly, truly outrageous.

  • amywinns

She looks like a Comic Con refugee. Just because you’re really REALLY proud of the anime costume you glued together in your basement, that doesn’t mean you should trot it out among the “normals”.
Ugly, tacky, and proportionally skewed on her body versus the designer’s vision. Not witty, not “fun,” not “playful, just gross.
Though I do think she’s right to give her hair a break and just go with the wig. Glad to be spared the whining about her roots maintenance.

  • No, she looks like that Catra on She-Ra. TOTALLY. http://lisahellen.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/catra.png

  • jilly_d

    I just can’t with her.

  • PeaceBang

Funny, campy, perfect for the occasion. It’s insane and she’s owning it. Atta girl.

  • Looks more like Xena to me.

    • I went with Elvira.  But let’s combine our powers and let her be known as — Elvira – Warrior Princess.

  • kikisayshi

    Wonder Woman!

  • That is the cheapest, nastiest wig I’ve ever seen. Sigh. She’s so pretty. Can’t she just be…normal?

  • In my defense, my 8 year old recently discovered Jem! on Netflix, so it’s been playing here. I’m sure that’s the ONLY reason I thought, “Hmmm, more of a Misfit than a Hologram,” before you ever brought them up. I think she looks pretty good, for KP. She’s essentially a cartoon character, so this is pretty great for her.

  • MoHub

I was thinking Wonder Woman’s honeymoon nightie.

  • LOL!  Love Jem and the Holograms!  Love The Misfits more and you are so dead on!

  • HobbitGirl

I can’t help rather loving Katy Perry’s crazy get-ups. Not everyone gets to live out their little girl dress-up fantasies.

  • Leslie Streeter

They are the Misfits. Their songs are better.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

oy vey, the superhero in diaper trick.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

This is the happiest she’s looked in awhile. And this is fun! I like Katy, Warrior Princess.

  • marilyn

I usually say that if a singer is really talented, she only needs to do the shock/trash look to get attention in the beginning.  Once noticed, her talent should make the public attention continue.  Here, she is going to have to be wearing these negligee/Halloween costumes indefinitely.  She is back to the wacko hair color.  Of course, that is needed too, since this is the only way anyone will notice her.

  • sk8tfan

She looks great, albeit like some supervillainess. The dress seems to have poor craftsmanship. And I’m done with sheer over granny pants (who knew the much villified Gretchen actually had her finger on the fashion pulse?) but I think Katy looks really cute in this.

  • Corsetmaker

I like this on her. It’s a good shape for her and it suits her personality while still being fairly wearable. That being said, the materials look kind of cheap and not liking how the back of the bodice lies, or the shape of the underneath. In fact the construction in general is a bit lacking.

But why do so many people think she should be ordinary, or ‘normal’?  There are millions of pretty girls out there with regular lives who can do normal and conventional. She’s a pop star, not a serious musician, with the money and opportunity to have some fun with how she dresses. I wish more of the bubblegum celebs would take a leaf out of her book, the stick out of their backsides and treat their multitude of red-carpet appearances a little less seriously. It’s a shallow and silly game, may as well treat it that way.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I am convinced that this is what depressed Katy Perry looks like. President of the Lollipop Guild becomes Evil Space Queen. With an ugly sheer skirt.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Cheap and tacky.  How unusual for her… :

  • Emily Guillory

What a horrible wig…she looks much better with her real hair.

  • Aurumgirl

    It’s a costume, not a dress.

  • Susan Crawford

Yep. You called it, TLo. Sigh – Slutty Superwoman. Again.

  • cleep1000

There is nothing about this that I like. *Might* have worked with a shorter, all-brunette hair style. Something soft. That wig is just all kinds of wrong.

  • christinewithanx

I was just thinking today that I’d like to have full breastplate armor on my nightgown! So glad someone has taken care of this.

What about her other outfit at this event, the nude bodysuit? Talk about costume/lighting mishaps.

  • The dress, styled properly, could look chic and edgy.  Unfortunately for Katy, with purple hair, it looks like a superhero costume.  The hands-on-hips pose doesn’t help.

  • turtleemily

I want to see her just go full on Wonder Woman next.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

New barbie- The Katy Perry Double Delight Barbie comes with perfume dress and accessory kit with ear headband and sprayable perfume bottle and a special dress that comes with 2 accessory packs! The dress doubles as a 80s rockstar look and comes with fuschia wig and Flying V guitar with glitter paint and Xena Warrior Princess look and comes with a shield, lace up boots, and sword.

  • sweet_potato

OMG! I was going to say the Misfits!

  • bellafigura1

As I’m scrolling around here, up comes a commercial on television:  “Coming in July, Katy Perry: The Movie!  An inspirational tale of  a little girl’s dream come true!”

  • guest2visits

Katy Perry is beautiful; but everything she’s wearing looks like the most 3rd rate type of costume that walmart could have.
Possibly perfect for 9-13 year old fans.

  • Puckndc

    She-Ra!!! Princess of power!!!!

  • Truly_Outrageous

Judging by the hair color it looks like she’s going for a Stormer look. But judging by the outfit she’s totally going for a Pizzazz look. She should try dying her hair pea green next time.

  • Katrina Atienza

OMG solid gold commentary. “We are the Misfits, our songs are better!”

  • She looks a little more like She-ra, Princess of Power.

  • Xena in eveningwear
