White Dress Showdown: Adina Porter vs. Olivia Munn

Posted on June 22, 2012

Because we are all about nurturing opinions in others as well as foisting our own on the world. Because we just love pitting celebrities against each other in style cage matches. Because – praise Jesus – these two gals looked outside their limo windows on the way to their appointments with their stylists and noted that it was June (unlike so many ladystars lately). And because we love a gal when she pulls off a white dress without looking prim or bridal.

Kittens, it’s the White Dress Showdown. Who wore it better? Your champions tonight are Adina Porter and Olivia Munn at HBO’s “Newsroom” Los Angeles Premiere.

Adina Porter

Olivia Munn

We think Olivia looks old-Hollywood gorgeous, although we don’t love the hair and flat-out hate the shoes. Adina looks much, much sharper and more modern to our eyes and in this case, a pair of killer black stilettos was definitely the way to go. Hands down: Adina.

  • Adina. She looks amazing.

    • Carleenml

it’s not even really a contest.

  • Agreed: Adina rocked it.

  • Maria Rosenfire

Adina, most definitely. Is Olivia wearing two-tone satin or are the lighting and the seaming teaming up to make it look that way? Not very attractive either way. Regardless, I love Adina’s dress, particularly the neckline.

    • In_Stitches

My guess is that it’s the same fabric and it’s the seaming that’s the culprit, but you’re right; it doesn’t matter the cause, the result is unpleasant.

      • sweetestsith

It looks like a pretty low-luster satin on the bodice with a shiny crepe satin skirt to me… I kind of hate it, Adina FTW hands down.

    • Call me Bee

It looks to be the same fabric, but that crepe-backed satin can look like it’s two different colors depending on how it’s cut.  The bodice is straight-of-grain–the skirt is on the bias.

      • ballerinawithagun

You are correct in your analysis.

  • Plus, Adina has the ‘tude. Love her and the look.

  • Adina – ftw

  • Clueless_Jock

  • Agreed. Adina FTW.

  • Adina wins. She looks gorgeous. Olivia looks like a “second wedding” bride. Gorgeous, I suppose, but where Adina is dressed for cocktails, Olivia is flat-out dressed for nuptials.

  • Judy_J

Adina all the way.  She nailed it.

  • Adina ftw.

  • MoHub

    Adina. Olivia needs underwear.

  • Adina has the better dress, hands down.

    • Also better hair, attitude, style, and accessories.

      • carolynmo

        Agreed. She looks incredible.

  • Adina is serving up the Foxy Brown. No contest.

  • Adina.

  • Olivia’s fits a little better in the bust, but damn, I love a white dress on a dark-skinned gal (especially when she’s rocking her natural hair).  Plus Adina’s neckline is gorgeous and a little sci-fi without being all “look at me, I have CUTOUTS!”

  • Adina.  I like Olivia’s accessories (excluding the shoes, which are god awful), but hate her mermaid hair, and the length of that dress is weird.  Adina all the way!

  • Adina – looks so sharp, without looking bridal. Plus, I love her hair! That short Mod afro look is so chic.

  • unbornfawn

Adina! Love the hair. This is how to wear black shoes this season.
Olivia looks standard, I am over the wilma dresses, that doesn’t help.

  • RL McGruder

    Adina – Fierce.
    Olivia – Bridal.

  • Adina, hands down, because who KNEW Lettie Mae was that gorgeous.

Olivia looks lovely because Olivia IS lovely.  But Adina looks more like she’s expressing her own style rather than a stylist’s.

    And again…she’s LETTIE MAE.

    • holdstillnow

“who KNEW Lettie Mae was that gorgeous”

Actually, I feel the need to reply to every sentence of your comment that way.  Plus, her hair is exactly right for the look.  I hope she keeps rocking it.

  • Rebecca Bledsoe

    Absolutely Adina.

  • call_me_schmeg

no apologies: i like olivia better. and what?

  • Adina. Olivia looks like she’s wearing a slip and I hate that flower knotty thing on the shoulder.

  • Adina FTW for sure.

  • mellorcr

While I agree that Adina’s total look IS better, I find the way the dress is riding up on her hips and rumpling across her midsection a little distracting.  She should have gone a size larger and had the bodice tailored down to her measurments.

    • lovelyivy

Agreed- better look, and the white glows on her, but the fit is off, unlike with Olivia. I’d still agree with giving the win to Adina based on liking the dress and her attitude.

    • holdstillnow

You’re right, but I didn’t even notice until reading your comment.  She is just THAT FIERCE that the rumpling is almost unnoticeable.

  • Rand Ortega

I wish I knew who either of these beauties are (besides having some connection to this “Newsroom” show). To the Google!

    •  Well, Adina did have a recurring on True Blood as Tara’s mother/Lafayette’s aunt, but now that Tara’s, well, not human anymore, I doubt Lettie Mae will be having much to do with her anymore.

      • Lettie Mae pops up in surprising places though.  Seeing Lettie Mae, formerly demon possessed – now preacher’s wife, react to the new Tara would be interesting.

        •  She might start drinking again, and the demons will come back to find her…

  • joe_tey83

    Adina, of course.

Although those are really 2 different dresses. It’s kind of weird to compare like that.

    • AthenaJ

Yes, I noticed it’s like comparing apples and oranges – Adina cuts a strong, modern figure in her dress, while Olivia’s look is soft and romantic. Both stunning, but very different takes on a white dress.

  • Aly Light

Olivia Munn doesn’t manage to escape “bridal”, because it the length and the shininess. Adina wins this, hands down.

  • Adina looks great, but I’m fascinated that Olivia is wearing a fabric that typically wrinkles as soon as you breathe and shows every single dimple in your skin and somehow the dress looks flaw-less.  So I guess Adina for the look, Olivia for the maintenance?

  • BazoDee

Adina. The satin fabric on Olivia’s is too clingy and shiny -looks like what a bride would wear leaving the reception or rehearsal dinner.

  • vanjar

    Absolutely Adina.

  • Adina – looks less bridal and looks both mod and modern.

  • crash1212

Adina – hands down. Thought that even BEFORE I read T & Lo’s preference…but agree for all the same reasons. I love it when we all get along.

  • julnyes

Adina FTW (though minor quibble – I would have liked a redder lip)

  • It’s a good thing that Adina’s dress isn’t black.  Otherwise those cut-outs would make it look like her boobs are in jail.

  • greyhoundgirl

    Adina for the fierce win.

  • introspective

Adina rocked it! Olivia looks like shes wearing Wilma’s honeymoon nightgown. Sorry girl but no contest here.

  • joolyz

    hands down adina for sure

  • jilly_d

Both are killing it, but Adina (whomever she is) wins this match.

  • Níkholas Méndez

olivia also totally looks bridal, which should have disqualified her automatically.

  • Super_Red

Adina, no question at all. Girl is FIERCE!

  • MarissaLG

    Winner = Adina.

Olivia Munn still looks bridal, just a bride at her second wedding.

  • Ali

    Adina, definitely.

  • Even if Adina wasn’t totally killing it, I would still vote for her. Olivia pretty much tops my irrational hate list.

  • Adina. More style clearly !

  • turtleemily

Adina wins. I liked Olivia’s until I saw the length and that it’s actually two shades, and the way the line between them is diagonal does weird things to her hips.

  • jmorino08

    Agreed. Adina FTW!

  • angelkutty

Olivia looks bridal and that seam across her abdomen is awkward.

  • Snailstsichr

Poor Olivia looks like she has a bird on her shoulder. Maybe she is practicing to be a pirate?

    • I know! I so what to pull whatever that is on her shoulder and throw it in the trash. It looks like a used hankie to me.

  • Deb Oswald

Love Adina’s dress.  My sister wore something just like that, only in yellow, back in the day– the late 70’s!

  • Larkin21

Both look great but yeah, Adina won on the details.

  • Verascity

I love white on dark-skinned women. Adina looks fab.

  • littlemac8

Wait, Adina’s dress doesn’t fit!!!  Love the dress but I would never go out of the house with something pulling like that.   How is that cute?

    • alyce1213

Really.  Does not fit her at all.

  • SpcilK

Adina. Simple and chic. Could have done without the blue eyeliner.

  • melanie0866

I think Olivia’s dress is too long and I don’t care for silk charmeuse.   However, Adina’s dress doesn’t quite fit – it’s too tight in the thighs, causing it to ride up around her waist.  Super-cute neckline, though.

  • Michael_Jones

Adina.  Look at the hem length and just try to disagree…

    • alyce1213

No disagreement on the hem.  But look at the poor fit, pulling, riding up, non-specific waistline on Adina’s dress. It simply doesn’t fit her and there’s no excuse for that.  Also, when a dress pulls like that it looks cheap, and the wearer looks tacky.

  • Eva_baby

Adina.  I think that Olivia’s dress is actually prettier.  But Adina is wearing the SHIT out of hers.  And those shoes…..killah.  So yeah, Adina FTW.

  • altalinda

  • Pants_are_a_must

Adina for me, even though her dress is slightly ill-fitting. She looks way better than Munn, and personally I like her far, far more as well.

  • Terence Ng

First one. Also because the structure makes it look like the insignia from the White Lantern Corps.

  • formerlyAnon

Adina, hands down because: I love the neckline and the contrast with her skin tone. Also, Olivia’s satin-slip vibe at the hem contrasts oddly with the more clean-feeling bodice.

  • rketeckt

Olivia is looking second-time-around bridal.  Adina is bringing the heat!

  • trisker

    Adina all the way

  • Joyce VG

Adina! (but her make up is a bit harsh no?)

  • Adina for the win! If nothing else, but because that’s the first time that I’ve seen blue eyeliner look awesome on someone.

  • Not sure who Adina is but she WINS!

  • Lilithcat

Adina wins, hands down.  Olivia’s dress is too bridal and the proportions are odd.  Also, hate the shoes.

  • Sara__B

Olivia: Vegas wedding. Adina: Wow! That was easy. Adina takes all.

  • marilyn

I like Olivia best.  Her dress fits and she looks very cool and romantic.  Adina’s dress is too tight, which kills it for me.

  • HobbitGirl

Absolutely Adina. The second dress DOES read bridal to me, especially with that frippery at the shoulder.

  • oh man adina is KILLING it. you go girl!

  • j_anson

Adina Porter looks amazing. Wow. Definitely winning this one.

  • tereliz

Adina is KILLING it. No contest.

  • MilaXX

I like Adina because Olivia’s read too bridal.

  • giiiirrrr

The winner has already been decreed.  Give us a hard one.

  • Adina looks fierce. She’s shutting it down, no contest, she wins.

  • Carlodog

I MUCH prefer Olivia’s dress, even with the bad shoes.  She looks sleek and beautiful.  Adina’s dress is wrinkling in weird ways at her bust and belly.  Someone pull her hem down!

  • sleepycat

    Adina, no contest

  • Definitely Adina – with extra credit for not wearing a shiny fabric.

  • kimmeister

Adina for sure, due to the unflattering length on Olivia’s and her ankle straps.

  • lrhoff

  • CassieLee22

  • phrenk

    Damn, has to be Adina.

  • joything

I love that Adina’s dress has an Egyptian feel to the neck treatment.  She looks comfortable and happy with herself in it.

Olivia’s has a sleeker fabric and “interesting” lines, and I love huh face, but that piece of Kleenex that got stuck on her shoulder is distracting.

    Adina!  She brings the realness.

  • granddelusion

Hate her shoes, but Adina wins this one

  • belfebe

  • Adina’s Casadei heels are to die for.

  • alyce1213

Hands down Olivia. Her old school glam dress fits her perfectly, not too tight for charmeuse, which is tres important.

Black stilettos notwithstanding, doesn’t everyone see that Adina’s dress does not fit her AT ALL!  The waistline is not right, there’s pulling, bunching, oh please!

  • msdamselfly

  • Adina, easily.

  • I think they’re both awful.

  • jessicasac

Adina, no contest. I hate the other girls shoes and hair, it doesn’t work with that bias cut thirties forties glam.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Adina in a walk. Olivia is too shiny and the diagonal slice looks weird.

  • Adina Porter wins just because she’s ADINA FUCKING PORTER.

Olivia Munn isn’t even worth watching during the brief time she was on Daily Show.

  • Monabel

Yes, but. Adina’s dress is all rumpled up in all but the last photo. Olivia’s has a more flattering fit. Not such a good day dress, though.

  • nannypoo

Adina looks great. An attentive assistant was needed to give it a little tug, however.

  • minnye

Adina Porter is so, so beautiful. She does such a good job playing a lunatic on TB that when I see her out of that role I am always kind of surprised to be reminded of how well she cleans up. That probably came out wrong but I’m not sure how else to put it. (oh, and she wins the dress cage match too.)

  • Lilak

Adina … (though I wish I could like this more than I do)

  • Agreed, Adina.  Olivia looks good, but Adina looks FIERCE.

  • kikisayshi

Adina is definitely bringing this one home.

  • MemHey

    Adina. Fierce.

  • Adina.

  • Louise Bryan

    Agreed.  Adina took this one.

  • Adina. I don’t think Olivia managed to avoid looking bridal, especially not with that  hem-length
and the flower-like ruffle on her shoulder.

  • nancymae

Adina FTW. So happy to not see her as Tara’s crazy Bon Temps ex drug addict momma.

  • Cat_In_A_Hat

Olivia IS bordering on bridal to me, although I love her hair and make up. Adina wins.

  • Adina’s look is very modern and that eyeliner is gorgeous!

  • clairellis

Can I vote neither. Adina looks too harsh to me and Olivia’a dress needs to loose a few inches. Neither one is making me happy.

  • butterflysunita

  • demidaemon

I’m not loving the seaming on Olivia’s dress, and the fabric looks too shiny. I’d go with Adina, even though she needed to pull the dress down a little to get rid of the wrinkles.

  • NurseEllen

Adina takes the gold, no question. Olivia’s dress is a Jean Harlow throwback nightie and I don’t like it one bit.

  • Aurumgirl

Adina looks like another member of the Royal Family of FuckingFantastica: and that other lady is wearing the $3 Louboutin plasti-shoes.  No comparison.

  • Judy_S

My opinion is thank you TLo for this pleasant post. Not feeling decisive this morning.

  • kingderella

munn doesnt look bad, exactly, but she looks boring, bordering on tacky.
    porter looks amazing. no competition.

  • Adina, without a second of hesitation.

  • They both look great, but Adina takes it.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Olivia Munn can pack up her ruffled satin and go home.

  • miagain

    Adina is splendina!

  • TieDye64

No contest, Adina FTW. She looks amazing.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Adina.  Love the dress, shoes, hair, makeup – she nailed it.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I love Adina’s dress, but the wrinkling at the waist says she’s not wearing it all that well.   Of course, Olivia’s not getting points for the pigeon-toed stance. (You guys have made me so picky! ;p)  I think I just like the old Hollywood glamor look better.

  • mjude

whoever she is Adina looks stunning & perfect in this summers heat

  • fiestyfashionfem

    Totally Adina for the win.

  • guest2visits

Adina’s look is polished and striking, head to toe. The dress however – is a little bit Sharon Stone; I think it would be prettier
without the cutouts.  Olivia’s look is very pretty also; she needs to lose the rosette thing on the shoulder. I think it would look
great with a pale jeweled clasp instead; something that matches her bracelet.   A tie ?

  • Neverbuynewclothes

If Adina weren’t part of the post, then Olivia is an “In.”  BUT the star has to go to Adina — that’s how good she looks.

  • KC

I love that Adina looks NOTHING like her cray cray character on “True Blood”! She looks amazing and totally wins this round….not even a fight, really.

  • Definitely Adina.

  • SophieCollier

Adina for sure.  I do want to run up and tug her dress down a bit though.  Looks like it rode up a bit.

  • KathKo

I pointed finger and squeelled “Fiiiiiieerce” at Ms Porter.
Clean, Sharp, almost looking a second away to elegantly kick your ass if you piss her off.
    Love !
Now, in wich show did I saw her before ?

  • ballerinawithagun

The last shot of Adina is fabulous. At first I thought the skirt didn’t fit her correctly but she just need to pull down and smooth out her skirt after the limo ride.

Each dress is perfect for the woman wearing the dress. What more can you ask for?

  • Le_Sigh

Adina FTW – cool, confident, will kick your ass.

  • Adina wins this one, although the dress is a little wrinkly and weird. She still manages to look faboo, though, and Olivia’s dress is a little too shiny for my taste.

  • Jessica O’Connell

    DEFINITELY Adina. She looks awesome!

  • Adina! The geometric collar is futuristic FIERCE, and the sleek shapes definitely keeps it from being bridal. Olivia looks beautiful, but it’s still a little too bridesmaid saved only by the killer shoes.

Adina for the dress, but Olivia has better shoes.

  • up with pod people

    I don’t love showdowns (they’re meanspirited in a way TLo usually — refreshingly — isn’t) but I love Adina’s look more.

  • annrr

Adina wins for better accessorizing but Olivia has a way better fit. Adina’s dress was made fora curvier girl. Especially in the bust.

  • Rebecca Jay

The choice is obvious, so I won’t redundacize except to say that Adina chick is one tall drink of sassy tea!

This feature makes me wish you would do a “who wore it better” – like they do in the mags – comparing those who wear the exact same dress.

  • RzYoung

Adina gets my vote too. Olivia’s dress is great but it looks like it’s got balled up loo roll on the shoulder

  • Mona Granroth

Adina, although I wish she’d tailored the neckline a bit. It looks a little loose on her, which isn’t often a complaint with stars! The two toned pattern on Olivia’s is throwing me off- dislike the beige.

  • EEKstl

Adina for the win, no question about it.  Stunning and appropriate dress, and killa shoes. While Olivia looks very pretty and she’s accessorized it well (except I would have chosen the bracelet but ditched the cocktail ring), Adina’s dress is just, well, better.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Adina.  So modern.  Olivia’s dress is too shiny for my taste and I don’t like that little birdy/flower thing on her shoulder.

  • KSuKim

Adina, but why is it so bunching around the middle? Is it made that way, or is she?

  • meridian5

    Adina. Hands down.

  • fungstyle

Agreed. Adina wins. Olivia looks like a New York Power Broker who got married on her lunch break to me.

  • Adina looks fierce. Olivia looks twee, actually.
