Vivienne Tam Resort 2013 Collection

Posted on June 27, 2012

Vivienne Tam routinely takes inspiration from Eastern spiritual concepts, which is appropriate, because if you’ve ever sat in on one of her runway shows, it’s a religious experience. This time, she was inspired by the spiritual and ritual significance of the mandala, and focused on tribal-inspired graphic prints with clean geometric lines in mixtures of black, white, and orange. The results are crisp and a little edgy, but pretty, eye-catching, and wearable. We really like that she kept the palette so limited and we love that drop-shoulder mini-dress.

I once owned a dressed very much like the third one down.

      • TieDye64

I dig that one quite a bit. Good taste!

    • tereliz

I’ll take one of everything!!  Except the khaki trousers with Decepticons on the knees. I don’t want to be afraid my knees are going to turn into a fighter jet and galivant off to fight Optimus Prime.

      • Snailstsichr

Oh, I thought they were kittens. And, like you, I like everything else in the collection. I seriously love the sixth look. (the long black vest)

      • zingit

I thought the same thing! “Oh my god, there are Transformers on her knees!”

        • kimmeister

          Ditto!

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

when your knees start talking to you, you’re in trouble.

      • ballerinawithagun

        Agree.

      • instantkarmalr

My first thought was, “Oh my God, that woman has cyber cats on her knees.”

So nice to know that Optimus Prime has pets!

I really am digging this. Especially the dresses. And the final dress is gorgeous. I’d love to see someone rock that on the red carpet.

    • PeggyOC

Pretty.  Although I’m not sure what kind of message smiley-face knee pad decals on your trousers sends.

Actually, I do know what message it sends, and I’m not sure I want my knees saying that in public.

All of those minidresses are seriously covetable for me. Everything looks great – simple, bold, and fresh while still feeling a bit retro.

    • CassieLee22

omg love the white dress with the red stipe down the front

    • SpcilK

Love this color pallet! Simple and very stylish pieces.

    • MilaXX

I like everything except those orange striped knee shorts.

      • mjude

        agree

        • MilaXX

nobody over 9 should wear striped shorts

    • fallen_ikon

I love it all! It’s nice to see a resort collection that’s actually wearable for the average person..

    • Saucysusan

I like seeing resort wear that actually fits that description. This is mostly very nice.

    • Catiline

I am severely in love with this collection.

    • Judy_J

Very nice.  These clothes also look wearable, and I love that.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Love everything but the Pretend Knee Pad pants. Clean and classic yet interesting.  Normally I would not like these colors (except the black and white) but I love this.

    • Lina_bee

I love most of the orange prints, but the pants have a weird cut and the cut-outs are mostly silly-looking. The 3rd dress & the last dress are my favorites. I hope she does more mandala work, though. She’s onto something good here; I just wish the shapes of these garments were more flattering.

    • j_anson

My eye skipped while reading the description, so I got “graphic prints with clean geometric lines in mixtures of black, white, and wearable.” Heh. Agreed!

    • Alisa Rivera

I love a lot of this, but three things I have to say no to: the pants with knee guards (WTF), the dress that looks like it has a giant orange tie caught in the model’s underwear, and the cutout pants (you know some random American Idol reject is going to show up in those on the red carpet).

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Some way cool pieces here and kudos on handling that color palette so effectively.  It is hard to work with those colors without things veering into Halloween territory and only the last couple of pieces go there.

    • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

      I am BLUSHING with want.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Love the prints here. I had a few dresses in this shape as a sophomore in high school. I looked so cute *sigh*. I want to try on that sleeveless blazer/vest thing . I think I could work it.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Did anyone else think of Shelley Obama for that last dress? She could WERQ it.

      • Amy Ellinger

I thought Maggie Gylenhaal(sp?) as well.  ShelleyO would do it justice for certain.

        • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Ooooo, Mags would look AMAZING in it!

    • http://twitter.com/riosramblings Michael Rios

Gorgeous, my favorite resort collection this year that I’ve seen.

    • Amy Ellinger

      So. Effing. COOL.

I’ll take one of everything, especially the dresses and that hoodie is to DIE!! The transformer pants I could turn into a cute pillow.

    • Sarah Thomas

Eastern spiritual concepts and still with the white model.

    • jilly_d

GOD I want that shift with the orange stripe down the middle

    • giiiirrrr

Dunno.  I think a lot of these look awfully stiff and heavy–not sure they would be flattering on anyone over a size 2.  However, that last gown (the full length off-the shoulder number), if belted correctly (it’s too high on the model, making her look improbably like she has saddle bags), is to DIE for.

    • marilyn

The first two looks were great.  Very edgy and serene at the same time.  the rest of the looks were boxy and uninteresting.  The pants on look 4, and the granny sweater on look 5 are the same fabric, and which she should have ditched. The looks after that remind me of school clothes.

Obviously this look is not for the curvy gal.  I see the tweens on the runway going for a lot of these pieces.

    • http://www.filmsbyneptune.com/ Dani Colman

I’m not entirely convinced by all the proportions, but I love the bold, graphical quality.  That’s the right way to do shift dresses.

    • guest2visits

Some pretty dresses. Like the first 3. And the dress with the gold jacket.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

      Last two: mine.

    • Indovina

I like most of it – I’m not sure about a few pieces and I dislike a couple – but I don’t necessarily love the collection overall. They lose me a little bit toward the middle of the group, but it definitely starts and ends well. Although I do like the penultimate look, the cutouts throughout don’t work for me at all (they make me think of cutout construction paper: the combination of black and orange and construction paper reminds me of Halloween in elementary school – an association which otherwise, in spite of the colour scheme, is avoided).

      • guest2visits

Interesting comment relating to elementary school – brought some of the same images.
Even though I don’t much care for alot of these; There is something very comforting about the colors and geometry that
make me think of sitting at a little table in my grade school library, reading a book.

Architecturally interesting.  But built-in hip enhancement wouldn’t go over well in this closet…

    • Zi Jie Tan

nice! i cant wait for the high street versions!

    • quiltrx

These really aren’t my colors, but I LOVE the graphic, clean nature of the collection.  Very nice.

    • http://twitter.com/thesquizz Lauren

I really like the concept of this collection. The cutouts, the color blocking, the patterns: they all work for me. Now, if only I had some money!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RHLSUVX3NCPB4OSS5BM7GZIXUE P. Capet

i very much like this.  i brake for geometry!

i can see mila and mondo digging on this collection too.

    • Mexxoo

      Transformers??

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Love the first two dresses, and I’d love to see Kerry Washington or Zoe Saldana in the last one.

    • http://twitter.com/grooxcore Marie Ee

Love the mandala inspiration and how it shows how much thought she puts into her collections.

    • Truly_Outrageous

All these pieces look like works of art. Yet they all look so wearable. Vivienne Tam is amazing.

    • RzYoung

That one shouldered gown is gorgeous – I see it on Blanchet. The model’s legs are freaking me out

    • Maddie Meyers

Transformer Pants!  Why didn’t I think of that!  And that orange blouse with the black wrap vest gave me a Betty Ford Flashback.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

Really beautiful. Love the graphics and the look of the whole collection.

    • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

Give that 12-year-old model some food, maybe then she’ll stand up straight and not look so petulant. And I’ll be able to focus on the clothes.

    • ballerinawithagun

I love Vivienne Tam! I really want the hooded jacket and the black skinny pants ensemble.

    • EEKstl

      Frickin’ LOVE!

    • butter nut

i love this collection, but i will like it more when it gets re-worked for adult women & not 12 yr old models.  a few pieces will be much improved, once the hemlines drop & the proportions are set on a real body.

    • bitterk

      Love everything but the cut-outs
