Taylor Kitsch: Good on Paper

Posted on June 26, 2012

Why is this not working for us?

Taylor Kitsch attends the premiere of “Savages” in Los Angeles in a Dolce&Gabbana suit.

We should like this. After all, as we’ve said many times before, we’re a sucker for a good plaid suit. Sure, the tie’s a little boring and the pants seem to be clinging to him in fear, but everything fits, which is more than you can say about a lot of boystars on the RC. But it’s not really setting us on fire. After more consideration than anyone would consider healthy, we have decided the problem lies north of the neck. That haircut and beard are terribly unflattering. They really do nothing for him.

And a skinny black tie with a grey plaid suit’s just a little too self-consciously “Don Draper” for us. Something with a little pizazz next time, Taylor. And shave. Also: a moisturizer with sunscreen.  You look like you rode through the desert on a mountain bike to get to this premiere.

That’s it exactly. He just doesn’t look handsome, and he’s a handsome guy. He looks so much better with longer hair and no beard.

    • He needs to go back to the Friday Night Lights look – remind fans why they loved him so much. (I just started season 3. He’s SO GOOD in it...DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Yes, the beard.  But also the unflattering yellow in the background – was hurting Helen Hunt’s overall look too.

  • MilaXX

Eh, it’s okay. Hate the beard and the tie.

    • EveEve

Wrong collar and wrong tie.  Fix those, and he’d be perfect.  I have no idea who he is, but I’ve got no issues with the beard or hair.  Needs a bit of concealer to even out his skin tone though.

      • H3ff

        Exactly. He’s looking veeeerry blotchy.

    • out for a walk

The beard/tie combination made me think lollipop. And not in a good way.

  • Lina_bee

Annoyingly generic. They undid everything that makes him pretty.

  • He has a really stunningly pretty and subtle face, but that means it loses much of its interest in photos. He tends to just look bland. This hair/beard combo makes him look even MORE bland. And that’s really a terrible thing for him right now, when he has three huge movies coming out this summer and two of them are already flops. He needs to go back to the Friday Night Lights look – remind fans why they loved him so much. (I just started season 3. He’s SO GOOD in it.)

    • Also, I love the two shots of him buttoning his jacket. GOOD BOY. (Er, he’s older than me. WHATEVER.)

    • shopgirl716

I loved Friday Night Lights and am a huge fan of his because of the show.  He does need to shave the beard – his good looks are not showing through the facial hair.

  • SassieCassy

Whats not working here?? HE IS NOT NAKED THATS WHAT

  • MoHub

The suit does not fit, top or bottom.

  • formerlyAnon

    It’s not-enough and too-much, simultaneously.

That big window pane check is too much – he’s not pulled together enough otherwise to stand up to it, & at least in the photo, it’s making him look shorter and squatter than he is.

The details are not-enough – as you say, he needs to look Groomed with a capital G to pull off the suit. A shave & a good haircutter would frame that crinkly-eyed smile so much better. Also, that tie is stunningly unambitious.

  • RebeccaKW

The facial hair is terrible.  I also think maybe…the gray may just not be his color.  Kind of washes him out.

  • kimmeister

I think that skinny ties work best on skinny men, not the barrel-chested types.

  • afabulous50

The proportions of his beard and haircut are off…it kind of skews his face a little.

  • Allyson Wells

Agreed. Remember how cute Tim Riggins was with his long hair and baby face? Let’s go back to that look, Taylor!

  • j_anson

Yeah, that face fuzz is awful. The suit’s actually pretty sharp, although putting your hands in your pockets is particularly obnoxious when your suit has so many visible straight lines to mess up. Really downgrades the sharpness level.

  • PuttyGalore

Totally agree. The hair especially, though the beard certainly isn’t helping.

  • joe_tey83

    The beard looks glued on.

  • piecesofconfetti

Not working b/c he is made for long hair and clean-shaven face. Or I’m just forever stuck on Tim Riggins.

    • “Forever Stuck on Tim Riggins” will be the name of my memoir.

  • fungstyle

I answered the question immediately with hair and beard, so 100% in agreement.

  • Annie McClanahan

i agree about the skinny tie–my fella is a short, skinny guy and he looks MARVELOUS in one, but tim riggins here is just too broad shouldered–he looks like he’s wearing a bolo.

  • PaulaBerman

It’s the headsuit. It looks horrible, and this is a guy I never thought could look horrible. Oh, Tim Riggins!

  • Charles Barthelme

I hate it when the tie and lapel width are so off. Wide lapel=wide tie, thin lapel=thin tie. And I totally agree, the beard and haircut don’t go with the suit at all.

  • butterflysunita

    His suit needs ironing.

*slinks away, hoping no one noticed she said something rude about someone*

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Aw, he was the only charismatic thing in that Battleship stinkpile.

  • I agree.  For as much as I love facial hair on men, it’s making this look all messy.

  • TieDye64

The beard and the tie are definitely deal breakers. Why do that to such a cute face?

  • oohsparkley!

My TV boyfriend from Friday Night Lights is growing up!  And like a dirty old lady I like him better with his long greasy hair and tight jeans.  I miss the long hair. The beard doesn’t seem to suit him either.  But we all get older, so I’ll just have to deal.  He still has some nice eyes.  I sure miss all my pretend boyfriends from Friday Night Lights.

  • Kate4queen

    It’s the beard…

  • Lilithcat

Why is this not working for us?

The color doesn’t suit him. He’s bland.  And I hate those lapels.

  • GillianHolroyd

I don’t have a previous concept with which to compare so I will say that the suit is shapeless. Needs shoulder pads and a bit of a nipped-in waist. That’s assuming from the amount of drool here that he has a good figure? He’s not really registering on the hot meter like this.

  • Filing_and_giving_things_names

Maybe the hair and beard are supposed to make us forget John Carter.

  • Dhammadina

I love him and I wish he could work something nowadays as well as he worked Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights. But here he looks like a hamster with furry cheeks. Not good.

  • Jangle57

I think you’re right about the beard.  If I scroll up enough to see it all just from the neck down,it looks pretty good to me but then I add the head in and suddenly something isn’t quite right.

  • it works for me. I have a long-standing inexplicable and historically verifiable thing for beards though.

  • cmb92191

The facial hair makes him look like my cousin.  Who knew my cousin in Idaho would be his doppleganger?   It’s pretty eerie

  • So. Scroll-up fug, then?

  • pattyw

Like Samson, he lost all of his magical power when he cut his hair.

  • Scraggly beards are all the thing right now, but he’s better without one.

  • Um, his man-area (?) is looking a little…not bulgy, but…lumpy??

  • All that’s important is that the plaid accentuates his delicious looking package.

  • PinkLemon

    i feel like….he’s *pretending* to be well-dressed….?

  • That is the worst haircut I’ve ever seen on a man.

  • call_me_schmeg

i hate the beard, but i would still sit on his face. good gawd, that boy just does it for me.

  • golspie

It doesnt work because it’s boring and he’s boring. There’s not a single interesting thing about any one of the photographs except, perhaps, the redness of the carpet. That’s interestingly vivid.

  • Aurumgirl

I think a plaid suit looks fantastic on men with a certain body shape, and it definitely helps if he’s long and lean, not stocky or substantial.  This suit doesn’t work with the string-thin tie, which only serves to make him look even stockier in the chest, so he comes off looking short and wide.  On top of everything, it’s a fabric that doesn’t respect his personal style, since the pattern’s too big on him, and the colour does nothing for him.  It just doesn’t fit.

  • lizajane1776

    Because he’s squinty eyed?

  • clairellis

I don’t think I understand the appeal with him…but I like the suit.

    • clairellis

Wait, I just Googled him and I now get it but only with long hair and no beard. And naked.

  • jmorino08

Skinny tie and wrinkled suit. Not a good combo

  • Really, after seeing the McQueen resort collection … BEGONE little grey suit man, BEGONE!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

It’s the white shirt and the facial hair. That white is blasting out distractingly and washing everything out along with it.

  • The facial hair is making him look Josh-Brolin-esque.

  • Bozhi

That is some ugly facial hair.

  • He doesn’t photograph well but he’s sex on legs.  Yummmm.

  • ChelseaNH

Proportions are off — the tie is too small, and the scale of the plaid seems too big somehow.

  • quiltrx

Before I even read what you said, I came to this conclusion: “it’s his head that’s the problem.”

  • another_laura

You guys read my mind.  You asked why you weren’t loving it?  And I said to myself “it’s because of the darned beard.”  If you block his head with your hand, you see a few misgivings like the tie isn’t quite up there and the sleeves are too long (but hooray for cuffs), but a good-looking outfit overall.

  • donkeygospel6

He just doesn’t lift my luggage.

  • Ugh! The beard! Makes him look like he has jowls in most shots.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Gotta say, I think you’re nuts. Sure, could he use some lotion? Yeah. A trim? Sure. A different colored tie? That’d be fine. But he still looks great. And yay plaid suit!

  • I think it’s the white shirt.  White generally only works if you have a strong skintone – black or olive skin or are a Jon Hammesque brunette.  If you have a mousey colouring and any sort of yellow undertones to your skin it just makes you look sallow and sickly. He would have looked a gazillion times better wearing a shirt in a pastel colour – say a pale green or a mauvey lilac.

  • Catiline

I normally think Mr. Kitsch is good looking, but all I’m seeing here is a downmarket Chris Evans.

  • lordandtaylor

    Here is why:

Scruffy beard with messy hair equals a no.
Shirt is way too bright white and the tie is all wrong. Please pull the tie knot up properly. Jeesh. Hands in pockets again. Why all the pocket pool? Hands in pockets = insecurity OR hands in pockets is a secret coded message to me to whisper “I miss you” I forget which one is true.
    Nice try, but no cigar.

  • Wow, I wouldn’t have guessed Riggins would become a high school civics teacher.

  • M Carlson

  • I think the problem with the beard is that it’s not as clean-cut as the hair (which is barely clean-cut). It’s more scraggly than the hair, and that’s putting me off, something I thought I would never say about Tim “swoon” Riggins.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s the haircut, and perhaps the facial hair. He has a great smile, and the suit is rather flattering.

  • YEAH! a beard on a man…thank god!

  • Judy Raddue

He’s too young to look that old.

  • MzzPants

Imagine if the suit had been cut slim and put on Ewan McGregor.  That would have been adorable.  This guy needs to try a different style altogether.

  • ccm800

He has no appeal for me
