Speechless

Posted on June 14, 2012

Darlings, here’s some pretty to close out your day. Americana Manhasset looked to Academy Award-nominated “The Artist” for its fall 2012 catalogue, titled “Speechless;” an homage to black-and-white silent movies; shot at Paramount Studios and several private homes in Los Angeles, featuring the fabulous Karlie Kloss flapping it up like it owes her money. Enjoy.

That print gown is so stunning.  So.  Stunning.  It almost hurts...DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

  • fungstyle

just about perfect, but it should be a german shepherd. this was the original rin-tin-tin’s hey day.

    • MilaXX

It’s spoofing the movie The Artist which the dog Uggie starred in.

Well from the looks of that seam on the first dress, we can at least assume nothing’s been photoshopped. But I do love a cute bob.

I like that her calves and knees weren’t ‘shopped smooth in that third image.

    • norseofcourse

Yes! Flesh and blood, human being body parts! No plastic Barbie legs!
(How sad is it that this is a rarity worthy of comment?)

    • NC_Meg

Me too. She has great legs.

    • terekirkland

B&W is much more forgiving than full color, so it probably wasn’t a priority, particularly since the whole shot is so soft and middle gray.

What bothers me is just how middle gray and blown out the whole image looks, which is something that could have been altered with some masks and layers to give it more contrast without making the whites even hotter. There are a lot of white-whites, but no true blacks, which makes it seem more muddy than vignette-y to my eye. Only the shadows in the purse look “black”, which really serves to isolate this photo from the rest of the editorial. The shot with the plane with the single light shining into the camera is weighted down with more black at the bottom, probably as shot, but I keep thinking that the graphics dept. could have done so much more with the flapper in the lights shot to add drama via more black-blacks. But that’s just my professional opinion. ;)

  • michelle shields

So cute! And the clothes ain’t bad either!

  • Jordan Brodley

    Perfection.

  • Call me Bee

Beautiful!  How funny that each one of these looks is less costumey than that slip dress outfit that Katy Perry is wearing in an aforementioned post!
That print gown is so stunning.  So.  Stunning.  It almost hurts.

  • everest19

    LUV HUH.

  • Zeeshan Ali

Correction: Academy Award Winner. Nomiated is used for well, nominees that did not win – or if the rersults are pending – which neither is the case with The Artist.

  • ConnieBV

    WERQ that Shalom Harlow realness!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Okay, I officially do not like Karlie Kloss. She looks so stiff.

This shoot is beautifully styled/art directed. I really need to see that movie.

Huh, I had the opposite reaction.  I had heard all the hype, but until this shoot, I never thought she was all that notable.  I normally hate the flapper look, but I think she just pops in each picture.  Beautiful!

  • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

    I love the flapper style.

    Fabulous!  I loved that movie!

  • formerlyAnon

Now THAT’S how to sell me clothes!

(Well, if “sell” means “an entirely imaginary transaction, necessitated by size of bank account.”)

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Now THIS is a photo shoot!!! Wonderfully executed, gorgeous clothes, and you can actually see them!!!!

  • TieDye64

    Love this. Adorable glamour.

  • GTrain

Meh. It’s just kind of obvious, directly copies that era with nothing added.

  • Lina_bee

    That is greatness. <3

  • sk8tfan

Fun, clever, cute clothes photographed to look flattering, for a change. Loved the framed photo of Uggie on the dresser. Dog has class.

Ok, first I had to answer the question, ‘qu’est-ce que c’est Americana Manahasset?’
Now that I know it’s just a mall, I can relax and appreicate the photos.
I like to know what I am being sold after all.

  • kimmeister

How fun!  I just wish they’d had a lighter hand on her lower-lid eyeliner.

  • NDC_IPCentral

    Hot-cha-cha!

    Give. Me. That. Coat.

  • NC_Meg

Oh, I love it! And I just listened to a podcast about Clara Bow today (interesting girl to say the least) so this is fitting!

  • guest2visits

The only pic with charm is the one with her and the vase of callas. Even though her legs look freakishly stretched.
The short dress in frame 4 is pretty. The last outfit would be too if it weren’t for the bags attached to her coat.

  • nicole seligman

she looks ten feet tall in these! best she’s ever looked, in my opinion.

  • quiltrx

Great editorial!  My favorite pics are the firescreen one and the vanity one.

  • cteeny21

Now that is photography! Just lovely!

  • DeTrop

    In a word – fabulous.

  • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

    Karlie Kloss is just amazing!

  • Markatha

I think this is beautiful.  I really loved “The Artist” and who couldn’t love Uggie.  He’s an adorable model.

  • fursa_saida

What’s weird is how the second photograph (the Charleston one) is somehow pure Karen Cartwright. Or maybe that’s just me.

  • Amy Ellinger

she is otherworldly. Divine, twenty-three skidoo !

  • kikisayshi

    gorgeous.

  • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

    Girl, that is your era.

  • Pennymac

Speechless for me is breathtaking! This is styled perfectly, IMHO.

    Wow!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    Yes. This!

  • TomBord

    FLAWLESS.

  • Jenny Stark

Beautiful photo shoot, but the graphic design for the cover is hideous.  What’s up?

  • RzYoung

    Delicieux!

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

    Love, love, love.   Thanks!

  • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

Uggie is like Andrew Garfield: only one face throughout the entire spread.

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

    It needed more Uggie.

  • Judy_J

Wow…that girl has legs, and she knows how to use them.

  • crash1212

Now, THAT’S a photo shoot. Just gorgeous. Girl got serious face. That gown in the mirror shot – breathtakingly good. This really was a moment of pretty.

  • Lilak

I love me some Karlie, but … I’m having a little trouble synching “flapper” and “7 feet tall” … hee.

  • sweetlilvoice

    Totally beautiful. Damn.

  • tallgirl1204

Karlie brings so much to the table.  Not just beauty, but talk about working the camera with her eyes…

  • http://twitter.com/msjwatt J.Watt

    That dog is ca-yoot!

  • TheOriginalLulu

Love the shots where she’s doing with wide-eyed thing. She jumps off the screen.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That black/white gown is a knockout.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

    Love this!!!

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

    Love.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    Pure fabulousness!!!

  • LinXGUA

Some of these are stiff, so they loose the “naivetée” of the era (see photo number 3, it scares me.)
That close up photo is fab.
I wish they’d use the shoes of those times, too (if they gonna copy all, then copy ALL.) Oh well, pretty indeed.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    Love these.
