Rachel Zoe Resort 2013 Collection

Posted on June 06, 2012

Miss Rachel looked to the hillsides and sidewalks of France for this collection, taking two of her top style inspirations, Catherine Deneuve and Jackie Kennedy, along for the trip with her. Love the prints and rich color palette, as well as the range of shapes, from flowy to very fitted. This is, we’re told, a collection about a Parisian girl on a holiday vacation viewed through a romanticized 1960s version of Paris and the French country side. It’s all Chic with a capital Chi, darlings. Very “dashing through the rainy streets of Paris” or “motoring off to the country side with your lover because your husband is getting on your nerves.”

This is the first collection of hers I felt like she was at least trying to dress someone else other than herself. The muppet fur is still very Rachel but I really like a lot of this.  Favs are the white dress and the pastel blue one.

    • Nonnah

I thought the same thing!  I like at least 50% of the collection and it’s the actual pieces and not just the styling.

      • your “lover” isn’t a hair stylist...DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

        • roadtrip1000

Maryellen (or whoever you are)-  Please stop using other people’s posts as your own. This is the 2nd time I’ve seen you drop a partial quote from someone else into an earlier post as if it were a reply. And by the way, you’re not going to get any traffic for your blog this way.

    • loveisblind1

      Lol. “Muppet fur” haha

  • Photo 4, model in salmon pants….is this the same model used in the Donna Karan post?

  • terekirkland

I can honestly say I would wear well over half the pieces in this collection if I could afford them. And I SO need to escape to the provinces with my lover right now, so the timing is perfect, lol.

    • 3boysful

I’m with you, sister!  How come no one told me motoring off to the countryside with my lover was an option when I am annoyed at my husband?

  • Is it just me, or are the hairstyles astoundingly, distractingly bad?

    • it’s the ugly hair trend, taking the fashion world by storm.

    •  It makes them all look like they have female pattern baldness

  • hughman

Well obviously your “lover” isn’t a hair stylist.

  • TSkot

Boy she sure doesn’t know how to design a long dress.  The 70s weren’t actually this ugly.

    • kimmeister

      The long, triple-tiers are terrible!

      • rougeort

Ugh, YES. So is the royal blue pant suit (17th pic). Does RZ even KNOW how to shape fabric?

        • Addicted2Glamour

          Apparently not.

    • bellafigura1

Wow, I think the magenta maxi dress with the pleated bodice and dropped waist is really beautiful.

      • that’s my favorite too.

      • LuisaNL

Isn’t it just gorgeous? Want it.

  • Super_Red

uhm.. I can haz the houndstooth coat? 🙂 🙂

seriously, this is a really lovely collection. There are a few pieces that I cringe at, but overall quite elegant and wearable.

    • kimmeister

Cringe-worthy: the sheer harem pants.  Amirite?

      • Super_Red

for serious. and the dress next to it. *shudder*

which is a shame, because they’re not SO haremy that the silhouette couldn’t be salvaged… but sheer? no. no no. NO.

Also, i really dislike the very first dress, though the jacket over it is pretty lovely. There are a few pieces that I dislike because I don’t like/never wear that particular style, but I can acknowledge that they’re chic and would look great on someone not me.

        • kimmeister

I like the jacket and hate the dress too, but mainly because I think the triple tiers are awkward, and the print looks like camouflage with just a bit of orange thrown in.

        • A. W.

I actually love that sheer dress, it feels like something I would wear. I’m trying to live my early 20s as early-20s as possible!

      • TieDye64

        You be rite.

  • Rand Ortega

Love. It’s all so very “Belle du Jour” w/ a dash of Jane Birkin when she & Serge were THE Couple in Europe.

  • MAJ.

  • Judy_J

I want, want, WANT that pink/black/white dress.  I’d cut a bitch for that dress.  Seriously.

    • SouthernGirlRena

That was my favorite too!  If whoever you cut to get it doesn’t bleed on it too much, can I borrow it sometime?

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Yes! ^ this!  I like the top with the pants too, although the pants are too long for my taste.

How about you have the dress on Monday and Wednesdays and every other weekend.  I take Tues. and Thurs. and the other weekends.  Friday will have to be a cat fight for it.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Le sigh. I love her stuff, though nothing save the removal of some major organs (and possibly the development of an eating disorder) would allow me to slip into it. Enjoy, Megan Drapers of the world. I’ll crib my look from Liz Taylor.

  • Qitkat

“motoring off to the country side with your lover because your husband is getting on your nerves.”
HAHAHA, can I just gather some girlfriends for our motortrip? We’ll look for lovers along the way 😉

A very mixed bag, some really cute stuff here, but why are the pants/skirts/dresses mostly too long? even the cropped pants don’t look the right length.

  • Amy Ellinger

LoveLoveLove.  Chic, wearable, and yay color and prints!!!!

  • Deb_Lynn

I’m surprised to say I actually love this collection. Almost all of the pieces. I could see myself buying almost all of them, and I can see a lot of people wearing a lot of these items. It’s not everyday that this happens. This is a very realistic, stylish, glamorous collection that should make Rachel Zoe and her team very proud. The colors are to die for as well.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i think this is a better batch than usual.

otoh, it’s all very similar to itself, all her collections, no matter which or when. very pretty, most of it, although very derivative &–if you know entirely too much about the period she’s going for–always a little bit off the mark. there’s so so much 80s here mixed in w/ her 60s/70s–in fact, i’d say, more 80s/90s than anything else. & she often strikes me as aiming her arrow at talitha getty but actually spearing the early 90s instead. definitely here. she’s too young to remember the era w/ which she is infatuated–she’s too young to even remember her parents then–so it’s always gonna be impersonally mis -filed & -filtered. & it is. as an aside, the last shot? i’ve seen that exact same fur/fauxfur before–& it’s so striking that it’s hard not to remember–probably though, believe it or not, in something made by, i dunno, tripp or lip service during the last decade or two. so she’s got that going on too…..

  • beebee10

I really really really like these! Love that she rocks the pants and jacket. My favorite collection of hers yet.

  • NurseEllen

Love most of the black & white clothes, plus the electric blue and the ensembles with the sheer-ish yellow & black print.  Those salmon colored pants are heading right into stiltwalking territory!  The striped shirt is wonderful.  I wonder how high the platforms are on the shoes we can’t see.  The last two pink fur things are just awful.

  • Lilithcat

That fur-trimmed peach wrap?  That’s mine!

I seriously love the majority of this collection.  However, I don’t care how tall and thin you are, bell bottoms that drag on the floor look good on no one.

  • Glammie

Hmmm, I actually think this is her best collection yet.  With her other collections, I’d see a couple of pieces I really liked.  This time I like most of the pieces, while a relative few make me go meh.

She needs to get over the fake fur thing though.  Enough already.  It was gimmicky in the first piece, now it’s old.

  • rougeort

I adore and would totally wear all of these items except for the gowns (weird shapes) the dark blue pantsuit (???) and the striped sheers for chronic oversheeriness.

  • fungstyle

As much as I like many of these pieces, to call this a collection seems a bit of a stretch. I don’t see a ton of cohesion here. Feels more like a curated wardrobe for someone than a designer collection.

    • judith traherne

ITA. While it has its attractions, it’s *all* over the place re color, prints, fabric, mood.

It caroms from stiff to ruffles to boxy sequins to delicate printed voiles to pastel tucks to drapey bright solids to YSL b&w… I gave up after that. There is no focus to this collection. It looks like the sales floor of a very expensive boutique.

    • makeityourself

I agree with you fungstyle. This looks like a disjointed mess to me, with some really fug prints and a lot of cheap fabrics.

  • OK.  Those clothes just stopped me going to the kitchen for a slice of bread and Nutella. Just in case there was an outside chance of me fitting into/affording a couple of these pieces.  Love the black and white chiffon blouse and belted red leather jacket.

Rachel is getting surprisingly good at this designing lark.

  • SpcilK

Some of these pieces are Bat Shit Crazy, like the designer. The tayloring on the jackets and pants are EVERYTHING!

  • Lina_bee

Granted, a couple of these are quite good, several are not bad, and some are atrocious, but on the whole this collection isn’t my cup of tea at all.

  • michelle shields

A few ugly pieces but overall very nice. I dig the white shorts and boho-ish shirt.

  • jilly_d

I find Rachel Zoe incredibly vapid but really love (most of) this collection.

  • Scarlet39

For the most part, I like it.  But it does look like pieces from 3 or 4 different collections all shoved into one.

  • kikisayshi

As much as I want to dislike Rachel Zoe for her reality show, I have to say this is a really beautiful collection. But those netted booties are FUG.

  • marilyn

This is mass marketing stuff, not designer quality.  Rachel Zoe should do a line of clothes for Macys or Penneys.  It would be popular, but it is not particularly fresh or original.  Most midddle-of-the-road women would love it.  This line is highly commercial, and there is nothing wrong with being commercial.  The game is all about making money, and this line would sell well on a mass basis.  But it is not innovative or original in any way.

    •  Ninety-five percent of what walks runways isn’t innovative or original either.

      • It still seems like a perfectly relevant line of conversation in a fashion blog when discussing what makes, or doesn’t make, a particular collection appealing.

  • TomBord

At best, costume-y and derivative. Story-lines are for amateurs.

  • LOVE the maxi

  • LOVE the maxi

  • giiiirrrr

Mixed bag, literally and otherwise.  I think if she’s not going to style them for me, there’s not a whole lot I could actually wear.  Let’s face it, Rachel can style anything, and we mere mortals, weeeelllll….

  • giiiirrrr

  • filmcricket

All I can see are the 80s influences here. I know there are other decades, I can see them if I look hard enough, but man. Now I know how my folks felt when bell-bottoms came back in the 90s and they reacted with horror. Some thing just imprint themselves on your memory and apparently the horrid fashions of your youth are one of them.

Love the round sunglasses, I’ll take them all.

  • PastryGoddess

gurl gets it doesn’t she.  Love this collection

  • Verascity

I have to give her credit, this is gorgeous.

That black dress was inspired by Peggy Olson, right? It has to have been.

  • Don Howe

Huh.All I can hear is Nina, Heidi, and Michael flunking her. “It’s pretty but it’s not really a collection, now is it? A COLLECTION has to be COHESIVE…”

  • Didn’t know Rachel made stiltwalking costumes.

  • Some of these women HAVE to be wearing stilts.

  • Love.

  • silaria

Dear gods, can someone just buy me one of everything?  I have NEVER reacted so positively to an entire collection.  I love everything, even the colors I’d normally never wear.  Le sigh – if only.

  • Orange Girl

I LOVE stylists turned designers.  They know the body so well.  So many of the pieces are wearable and flattering.

  • fiestyfashionfem

These look pretty on these size 00 models.  But could you, dear designers, please put actual real-sized women in some of your clothes in your look books.  Not all of us are the same size as plastic mannequins. You might be surprised how many of us would throw money toward your designs if we thought they might look pretty on us, too. Thank you for your consideration.

    • AthenaJ

      This x infinity!!

  • Meh… I’m not falling in love. There are a couple of looks that are almost there, but for the most part I don’t like the style or the color is wrong for me. *sets the clothes free for another Bitter Kitten to wear*

  • quiltrx

I usually REALLY don’t care for her aesthetic, but this isn’t too terrible.  I actually like the black/white (checked? dotted?) jacket and miniskirt, and the decoupage-ish gold and black pieces.

  • guest2visits

There are some nice pieces; along with a big chunk of unattractive 80’s arf.  And a whole lot of borrowed 70’s casual wear.
Well if it’s the 70’s, make that ‘leisure-wear’.  The see through dresses are silly and the prints are mostly ugly.
But the pleat front dresses (blue and pink), the marilyn dress, the retro 60’s mod black and white pieces, the coral capri suit and
many of the suit pieces are very pretty too.  I have to say I expected tons of caftans and yards of fabric for her ‘resort’ collection.

  • Who is her demographic? Because I certainly can’t tell with these clothes. Unlike Donna Karan, Rachel Zoe clearly hasn’t figured it out yet.

  • NCDFan

Love the prints and dresses. Hate the short, tight pants. And hate the hair. Overall I’d give it a B-

  • TieDye64

I really like some of these pieces. That black and white and pink dress is so very cute. Love it. Can’t agree with the styling. Or the shoes. Ack.

  • MzzPants

Beautiful, every piece.  That shit’s gonna’ sell like wild fire.

  • mmc

Oh. Are those super long, touching the floor pants a thing now?  I’m not on board.

  • frankystein123

Other than the ridiculous jump-suit, orange&blue combo, and some other minor peeves that I have, well done Ms. Zoe.

  • m0r0

  • aristida_girl

I love this entire collection, especially the SHOES, I die! The only exception is the muppet-fuzzy outerwear, those are not so much for me….Go Rachel, super-stylist!

  • Say what you will about Raisin-Face, but does that Bitch know what she’s doing!

  • I die.

  • damn, rachel zoe is proving to be quiet the designer. very impressed

  • CMS

Will no one stop the muppet genocide?

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Totally agree with all the comments on this being a great collection!!  So, I have to say  – I like these models!!  I pretty much always hate the models – so glum.  But these girls look cool – they are selling it!!  They have make up on!  They are pretty!  They don’t look like they both live under the floor boards.  It has got to help sell the clothes – just no way around it!!

  • That red dress is to die for, but only on someone that unbelievably thin and willowy–Zoe Saldana would be perfect.

  • I’d love everything except the harem pants…those should be taken out into the street, stoned, drawn/quartered, then burned

  • I admit, I started this post with a very closed mind. But I actually like a lot of the stuff. The houndstooth set is adorable!
Those sheer boots are stupid, though.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Wow, I love this collection. I want to be that girl.

  • Wow. I kind of love some of this stuff. Some of those jackets are to. die. That pink dress is surprisingly appealing, LOVE the red tiered one on someone else. Those blue pants = want but cannot afford… She is impressing me, honestly.

  • Beth G

I HATE the pants that go all the way to the floor.  The other stuff, I can be a fan of

  • Oh to have my 20-year old body back again to wear that first dress…

  • suzq

Love, love, love, love, love, love the black/white/mauve striped short dress.  There’s a lot of growth with this collection.  Good to see.  Still not getting the need for the fur coocoon, however.

  • rachel zoe and victoria beckham are the only designers whose entire collections i absolutely love and would wear.  i couldn’t help myself from ordering an ombre fur coat from rachel zoe’s fall 2012 collection…waiting in desperation for it to arrive.

  • crash1212

Rachel Zoe is the real deal. I love pretty much every piece she has on offer this time around. I’m a little iffy on some of the booties and I think I’m over the whole platform thing – but the clothes are TO DIE! Nicely done.

  • cteeny21

She really seems to be dressing every age group. There were some that I thought looked too old for me (I’m thirty) and there were some I thought looked too young, like the blue dress with ruffle skirt. Then there were some that were perfect for me. Very nice collection!

  • This is a whole lot of cute.

  • This is a whole lot of cute.

  • Rachel Zoe is afraid of waists, apparently.

Still, I love the colors in this collection!

  • BayTampaBay

I want the whole damn thing.  Do you get a discount for purchasing a whole collection?

  • aimee_parrott

Once again, I really love a lot of this.  HOWEVER… most of the shoes are hurting my feelings.  Blech.

  • Neverbuynewclothes

So does anyone else think it’s especially creepy when the pants are so long they come to the floor and make it appear the model has no feet?

  • newtonGOTbeaned

Wow. Most of the patterns are awful. The flower barf pattern is the worst, but the yellow amoeba pattern and all of the patterns on the jumpsuits are pretty bad, too.

  • nancylee61

I like the first two pieces and that black and white suit, great button placement. But I really don’t like this as much as I thought I would from what I know of her taste. A lot of it looks odd, and unwearable.

  • CatherineRhodes

Not feeling it. The collection feels disjointed.

  • Stubenville

That baggy long sack with the Muppet pelt hooded vest? It shrieks “Edie Beale”.

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

WOW!!! Love so many of these outfits! Love the red suit with long-sleeved white blouse in the third picture, the blue suit and the gorgeous red gown!

  • fursa_saida

I like a lot of this, I think some of it is stupid, and some of it looks really cheap–like catalogue clothes. I feel like I’m looking at several different collections at once.

  • RL McGruder

Huh.  I love a LOT of that – and it’s not all about the styling.

  • Love the red dress that is second from the bottom!
