Prada Menswear Fall 2012 Ad Campaign

Posted on June 22, 2012

We thought the Ladies campaign was pretty fabulous, but this? This, we love. Deeply.

Prada Menswear Fall 2012 ad campaign, featuring Gary Oldman, Jamie Bell, Garrett Hedlund, and Willem Dafoe,  photographed by David Sims.

That is so fucking fabulous we can’t even. Looks like that runway show was an audition and these four made the cut. Haha, Adrien Brody.

We want to spend a night with them drinking brandy, playing snooker and discussing the gentlemanly arts.

And that’s totally not a euphemism for sex.

GOD. DAMN. If I smoked, I totally would right now, having seen this.

I think we all owe Miuccia a drink.

    • I agree, I’m in dire need of a scotch and a cigar right about now. But since it’s still daytime here and I don’t smoke, I guess I’ll just take a shower.

  • deathandthestrawberry

Forget about the young-uns, Oldman and Dafoe are giving serious face.

    • Ogden1990

Yes, the elders win the “giving serious face” contest, but it’s the juxtaposition against the beautiful youths that make this campaign so compelling. ( Oh, and I love Jamie Bell.)

      • holdstillnow

I have to respectfully disagree.  Jamie Bell’s face-giving talents are so fierce, I think he should consider giving up acting.  Or at least modeling more.

    • Yeah, Gary Oldman can WERQ. (Helps that I adore him.)

      •  Yes, I kept scrolling down, looking for Gary. LOVE.

      • AudreysMom

Gary Oldman is clearly the one we’re attracted to most here (helps that I adore him, too). But I adore the others and somehow am surprised I wasn’t more affected by Willam Defoe’s face giving. But in every damn shot, Oldman tells a story about the man who is wearing the clothes. Who knew this amazingly talented actor and by all reports, nice guy is such a great model.

BTW: check out his bit on Jimmy Kimmel where Oldman does a PSA against athletes as actors:

      • TieDye64

        He really can. Love him.

    • Mr. Dafoe looks like the most badass human being to ever have roamed the earth. In contrast, Mr. Oldman looks like a decent (though quite stern) guy. The young ones are their… ok, theirs. Really fun shoot!

  • SpcilK

LOVE! The clothing and photos are simply gorgeous, very manor born . I want Willem Dafoe to rescue me and wisk me off in his carriage. Then let his staff know that we will have an informal dinner in the parlor.

  • altalinda

Hooray for age.  Dafoe and Oldman are so intense and present, while those youngsters just fade away.

  • SoThenISaid

Willem Dafoe. Now that is a FACE.

  • formerlyAnon

WHOAH. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, INDEED.

If you’ve got the money for Prada menswear, you might as damn well get a couple of coats that your date can distinguish from every other coat s/he’s seen that evening.

Oh, Prada, how thou hast redeemed thyself for allowing me to gaze on these. Now, if only decently cut & reasonably priced knock offs will catch on among the spiffier gentlemen of my acquaintance, I’d have a whole new reason to rejoice in the return of cooler weather.

  • Lilithcat

It’s all very 1910, isn’t it?  Somebody raided their great-granddaddy’s closet!

    • Oze R.

Which is not a bad thing, actually.

      • RebeccaKW

No.  If a man showed up to pick me up for a date in some of these, I might propose to him right then.

Especially if he was working it like Gary Oldman and Willem Dafoe.

ETA: correct my misspelling. I blame it on loss of blood to the head.

        • If a man showed up to pick me up for a date in some of these, I would have heart failure and rush back to my closet to find something appropriate to wear.  Then tell him off for not warning me.  THEN propose.

          •  But the question would be: What WOULD be appropriate to wear when one goes out with a fellow wearing something like this? I’m wracking my brain.

          • as if clothes could stay on that long if you were on a date with a man wearing that!

          •  If a man wears any of these pieces he’s got to go ALL the way. You can’t pair them up with jeans.

          • Anything except the Prada ladies collection. I’m sorry, TLo, but I cannot love that. They gave us Barbie-doll rewarmed Sixties clothes, but the gentlemen get glorious turn-of-the-century steampunk elegance?  Not remotely fair. Give me a 1910-reminiscent collection worthy to be seen with the clothes in this gentlemen’s collection.

      • Lilithcat

Oh, I totally agree.  I love the clothing (at least, the upper class clothing) of the early 1900s.

  • Old School, Dafoe and Oldman, are making those little boys look like Chess King mannequins.

  • hughman

It looks beautifully made and very expensive. Would I want to wear it all the time or do I see any pieces (other than the overcoats) I can imagine wearing regularly? Not at all. So for me, rather costumey and not something I’d obsess about having every piece of.

    • kimmeister

Agree, they look they’re on the set of a period movie.

  • Oze R.

I want to live in that world. I NEED to live in that world.

  • vanjar

The less said about the Ladies collection, the better. This, this collection however is it. Love the long coats, the colour palette and the delicate print.

  • All I could think of was vampires for some odd reason.

    • RebeccaKW

       Or Sherlock Holmes.

      • Yay, SH! Let’s call the BBC1 and tell them to snatch these up for Mr. Cumberbatch’s next season. Miss Adler shall faint!

    • Elizabeth Davis

Well, Gary Oldman played the granddaddy of all vampires back in his heyday — and looked incredible doing it. Willem Defoe? I’ve always found him creepy as all get-out, but he looks amazing here, too. The young guys don’t have a chance standing next to these two.

      • He also played a vampire in Shadow of the Vampire, a surprisingly awesome movie, considering practically no one has ever heard of it.

        • Elizabeth Davis

You’re right. It’s an excellent movie!

        • filmcricket

Yeah, if Oldman played the daddy of all vampires, Dafoe played the daddy of all movie vampires. That was a great flick.

        • Catiline

Oh God, I LOVED that movie.  In addition to Dafoe’s awesomeness, John Malkovich was utterly spellbinding.

  • formerlyAnon

P.S. You gentlemen often speak of ending our day on “something pretty.”

As far as I am concerned, this is pretty enough to close out the week.  As soon as I get home I’ll rustle up some icy cool cocktails for anyone who wants to stop by!

P.p.s. These inspire me toward the top shelf gin. I can probably dig up a few little paper umbrellas to adorn something fruity, though.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I feel like I’ve just seen Chuck Bass’ entire wardrobe for the final season of Gossip Girl.

Love Dafoe and Oldman, workin’ those faces!

  • Lexie

lovelovelove! That first image has a bit of a Downton Abbey feel to it. Great clothes, great face, and great styling.

    • twocee

I get a Downton feel in a lot of the pictures.  I think that’s why I like them.

  • Baditude

I effing love Willem Dafoe. My eyes were drawn to all of his photos, to that face.

Oh, and the clothes were pretty amazing too.

    • He can give serious model-face, no?  Great fashion spread but I couldn’t help but think Dowton Abbey, which isn’t to say that it degrades the awesomeness that’s going on.

  • I love this collection so much.

  • TomBord

Well the 1% will be exuding regal, gangsta-ridiculousness and a costumey- wild wild west w/o the butch theme  in the coming future. These costumes have about as much sex appeal as a Mitt Romney wet dream.

  • AnaRoW

If I recall that runway show, Garrett Hedlund was the worst.  There’s no way that was an audition he passed. Adrien Brody has a contract with Lacoste.

Love the clothes, by the way.

    • Garrett Hedlund is handsome, but in such a generic way. And he looks
scared or uncomfortable in some of these shots. Jamie Bell can’t stand
up to the old masters, but at least he’s interesting to look at.

      • vivandy

Sorry but Jamie Bell looks like a messanger boy.

    • Catiline

Garrett Hedlund, I’m sorry to say, had me humming the “one of these things is not like the others” song from Sesame Street.

  • So when TLo adds & Co., they (hopefully we) make this mandatory dress code.

  • j_anson

    Those trenchcoats! Swoon.

  • Maya Cagan

Dafoe’s giving FACE and Oldman’s channeling Dracula. The men have it, the two baby boys can go home now.

  • gabbilevy

    Supervillains. Love it.

  • RebeccaKW

Gary Oldman and Willem Dafoe are killing it.  Nothing against the 2 youngsters, but I found myself scrolling through searching out their photos.  Damn.

  • MilaXX

Made for a great runway show, but nothing here is practical. It all looks like a costume.

  • Makes me wonder how much better the women’s collection would be on Helen Mirren, Judi Densch, et al.

    • filmcricket

The idea of Helen Mirren in those 70s-esque pants is giving me the vapours. In a good way.

  • giiiirrrr

    Edwardian Mafisoso Steampunk Realness.

  • rawrgrowlrawr

In some shots, Mr. Hedlund looks a lot like Christian Bale. Not a bad thing!

I want these pieces for myself, and I am a lady unit.

  • Tenille Clarke

Makes me feel all “Inglorious Bastards” inside. Is it just me?

In any case, I’m definitely okay with that. J’adore.

  • PastryGoddess

Willem Dafoe is FACE!  Gary Oldman is GRAVITAS.  those other two, meh

  • Lina_bee

I feel like I’ve gotten into a TARDIS and done a tour of 1922 Berlin-Prague-Paris. Fabulous and striking.

  • StelledelMare

I’m going to need someone to court me while wearing these clothes, ASAP. The work you would have to do would be minimal.

  • sleepycat

Need those glasses like now, now if I only had the cash and resources to buy them

  • The guys look great but dont the clothes look kind of terrible on them, like everything is either entirely too big and baggy and wrinkly and way to tight and makes them look paunchy. Just think its terrible to make their bodies look horrible as an advertising ploy. Dont you want the clothes to fit well and flatter people with great bodies.

  • Jamie Bell in the white jacket looks like a Richard Harding Davis illustration. Amazing!

  • Willem is SO. AWESOME. I can hardly stand it. I have a great and abiding love for Gary Oldman, but Willem is killing it.

    • filmcricket

Much like the runway show, Dafoe is shutting it down. Oldman’s doing his thing and doing it well, but Dafoe is the clear winner in this group.

      • minnye

Dafoe looks a little hammy to me, but he’s one of my faves so it’s ok. The sunglass pic & the straight on closeup (5th row from bottom, I think – purple jacket) are mmmm mmm.

  • Deb_Lynn

oh wow. This was wonderful. Even though it all looks a little too theatrical combined in these ways, the pieces are very (obviously) dramatic and would also look fantastic off the runway as separates. And I adore the fact that she used differently aged, as well as slightly differently shaped men to model. Willem Dafoe? I wouldn’t have thought of that one. But wow, what a masterpiece of a fashion spread. I apparently love this quite a bit.

  • Elizabeth Scharnell

  • lizajane1776

    Oh, my!
I often appreciate beauty when you present it to us, but this is the first time I have actually started breathing heavily.

  • L.O.V.E. The wowest wow as of recent. This is fierce as hell.

  • DANDY.

This works for me in every way the woman’s collection didn’t.  Fanfuckingtastic.

  • joything

When is this movie opening?? I have to get my ticket NOW.

  • Bell is the prince, Dafoe is the wicked uncle who poisoned the king. Oldman is the ruthless chief counsellor. Oh, and Hedlund is there by mistake. I’d totally watch this version of Hamlet.

  • Mary Baumer

SHUTTING. IT. THE. FUCK. DOWN. holy hell.

  • Rand Ortega

Is Steampunk still trending? Because this homage makes it very sexy .

  • LUST!!!!!!!!!!i want it all.

  • Each and every one of those men is WERQing the shit out of these fabulous clothes. Easily one of the best celebrity campaigns I’ve ever seen.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    That is FINE.

  • LinXGUA

    Ay papachongo!

    Thanks T and Lo!

  • I LOVE Jamie Bell!!

  • Seanybills

While I like the overal style of the clothes, does anyone else think they are a bit too bulky?  Maybe it’s because they aren’t on waif-type models, but these outfits make most of the guys look thick.  Also, did Jaime Bell put on some muscle after they did the fittings?  His outfits seem too tight.

    • I agree.  If they want an actor to be their model & show off the clothes to greatest effect, the best option is probably Michael Fassbender. He’s definitely waifish.

  • OK…forget the totally lame movie from 2003 that finished off Sean Connery’s career (but his clacking false teeth will live on forever), but THIS is the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Hot…damn. And Jamie Bell, Dumbo ears and all, is the bomb.

  • Merridith Kristoffersen

What the male characters in a Wes Anderson movie would wear if it took place in Europe.

  • aeg66

All thats missing is Anna Karenina throwing herself in front of the train at the end. Classic drama!

  • Thuy Trang Nguyen

Looks like someone at Prada’s been watching Downton Abbey…

  • Lisa Kramp

    God. DAMN! That’s stupifyingly wonderful.

  • I seriously LOVE Gary Oldman. And this is just such a gorgeous campaign, there are no words.

  • jabes

Good God.  Has Gary Oldman always been that sexy?  That 4th photo from the top.  Whew.

  • kikisayshi

I love this, but I love Gary Oldman even more!

  • Add one more to the GO fanclub. I have loved Gary Oldman since I was a teenager and I first saw “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”. The man is awesome. These pictures are making me all twitterpated, yet again!

  • I worship at the altar of Gary Oldman.

  • Louise Bryan

This line was designed for Dafoe.

  • frankystein123

I just had the most intense eyegasm upon seeing this.

  • Gary Oldman. This ad campaign was totally MADE for you. *swoon*

And Garrett Hedlund, thank goodness you made up for your disappointing grab-the-buttocks runway walk.

  • Esz

Oh my fucking god that is AMAZING!! Mr Dafoe is giving such good face in ALL of those pics – he is Grand Master Super Villain in each shot.
I want to draw every single pic. *hyperventilate*

  • Sarah Thomas

I’d watch the shit out of this movie.

  • unbornfawn

This is fabulous on so many levels! The men! The clothes! I’d love it if men dressed more like this!

  • Twinzilla

    they all look just DANDY.

  • NurseEllen

Smoking jackets! Steampunk! Jules Verne! This is very cool. And Dafoe…..that guy can work the camera. I’m sure he’s not about to give up acting but DAMN, he could easily model all day.

  • Aurumgirl

Willem Dafoe just gets better with age.  I’m glad these boys are walking the runway for this designer.  Hope she never stops hiring them!

  • Pennymac

    A. Ma. ZING!

  • DaveUWSNYC

Neo-Edwardian – 21st century Lord Grantham.I would sell my grandmother to Barbary pirates for this collection.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

WOW! Thanks Guys. What a treat.

  • JasonKL

Man, if steampunk types had the money for prada they would be all over these. Beautiful shots.

  • quiltrx

GARY!!!!!!!! J’adore Gary, someone get that man an Oscar, please!

Anyway, this collection is FABULOUS.  I wish I knew men who actually wore such things.  Oh, and Willem, love you too!

  • Willem Dafoe snatched everyone’s wig. The man knows how to effortlessly burn lasers through the camera. Hedlund, like his acting, seems to be trying too hard. Oldman is boss as usual and Jamie’s look was tailored for this aesthetic. A++++
The jackets are DIVINE!!! Prada’s creative team needs a raise.

  • Is it only me or does anyone else wish that Ewan MacGregor was one of the models?

  • For the first time in, oh, ever, I wish I was a man. Holy shit.

    • No reason it can’t work for girls too… Steampunk knows no gender.

      •  true, but I honestly don’t have the figure to work something like this. I’m about as little teapot (short and stout) as they come.

but yeah, a man or gorgeous lady type in this? Leg humping all around.

  • glennethph

    JBells, I love you!

  • this is very dandy in deadwood.  love. love.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Thank you so much for sharing that, Tom and Lo!  That is, without a doubt, the most beautiful mens collection I have ever seen on your website over the past several years.  And Gary Oldman – yum.

  • Puckndc

I have finally lived long enough to see the “Edwardian Look” from the 60’s come back…….very Steampunk n’est pas?…. Professor Wiffenpoof receives the geographic society before his launch to mars

  • mjude

    works. of. art.

  • YayaGurl

I’ve never been a Dafoe fan because of his weird teeth but damn,as long as he keeps his mouth closed, I’d hit it.  And Gary Oldman, ooh fah!  I guess I’m really finally in my 40’s because the young guys don’t look half as interesting as the older ones.

  • I see these men and then I think about the way the men dress at my job and it depresses me.

  • anotherEloise

  • snarkalicious

Love the clothes (and the models), but why do they all look so…I dunno…EVIL?

  • golspie

  • Roman000

I normally dislike celebrities in fashion campaigns, especially when it comes to Prada (the campaign with Michael Pitt *shudders*). However this is an exception. The guys look great and the clothes look even better. Don’t know why, but I’m getting Soviet inspiration from the tailoring of the jackets. Must be the red background. 🙂

  • Oh I needed this today. My, my. Oh my my.

  • This kind of looks like the world’s best steampunk cosplay… and I think I’m okay with that???

  • KathKo

And that’s totally not a euphemism for sex
    Yeah, right.

  • guest2visits

Yes! I love every bit of this! I can’t even tell which jacket, weskit, or coat I love best.  Would’ve liked to see Brody’s too.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

I’m getting kinda Mafia meets Tsar Nicholas II vibe of the clothes, especially with the fur collars.

  • Le_Sigh

Dearie Me – Oldman, Dafoe?  So love this.  I will be joining you gents for a brandy and cigar.

  • I want these…..when they’re on the clearance racks. I sincerely doubt they’ll be in a size 46L though.

  • littlemac8

Gary Oldman is damn near perfect and did you see the size of Willem’s head and hands.  I love the juxtaposition of young and old.  Striking only scratches the surface!!

  • Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. I wish the women’s line would have had as much Edwardian influence instead of more nasty, tired seventies rehash.

  • mbourgon

Where can I get that vest Oldman’s wearing in pic 4? And what the heck is that thing he has in the pocket? And more importantly, WHERE CAN I BUY ONE?!

  • Jason Bellew

This is what mens fashion needs. FASHION! Something to wear other than a jacket or a suit. Double breasted, single, ugh so 50’s. Prada is right on the money to see real good looking coats and shirts that look fit and sharp lines. When does it hit the stores!!

  • MzzPants

Dafoe and Oldman are shutting this shit down.

  • WOW. Just, WOW.

  • Damon Oman

Shut up and take my money!

  • 18 gazillion different flavors of Edwardian era gorgeousness.  YUMMMM….

  • One more thing…fully expect to see Mr. Patrick McDonald in something (anything) from this collection.  It would be stunning on him.

  • Be still my heart!  Totally bookmarking this in my “when I need cheering up” folder

  • prada starting with steampunk-style now? i think i love it!

  • O.O  Wow. Perfection.

  • omg Gary Oldman, no words, just perfect.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Steam punk + WW I Airmen + Snifter of Brandy = in my bed.  LOVE THIS.  ALL OF THIS.

  • …unf.

  • librarygrrl64

That PSA was GENIUS! Oldman, FTW!!!

  • Jason Danforth

If only there were an organization for these kind of gentlemen.  A “league” of sorts.  Wouldn’t that be extraordinary?

  • cleep1000

Seriously? They look like they’re ready to take over a small country and trample on human rights. And not in a good way!

  • “Ve have vays of making you talk!”

  • This is beyond fabulous.  I want to see a movie with all of these men in all of these clothes.  I’m thinking some sort of Chekhov or Dostoevsky adaptation.  Perfection!

  • I was already swoony for Gary Oldman and Willem Dafoe. But now… my oh my!

  • This stuff I like SO MUCH more than the robot lady’s stuff….
Oh yeah, could we see some “mature” women models now too? Age is hot.

  • awaiken

    well, this is fucking cool

  • The new Evil Overlord line, for the would-be world conqueror at work or play.

  • TieDye64

So effing fabulous I almost can’t stand it. Oldman and Dafoe are just kicking ass and taking names. I thought they were pretty cool in the runway show too.
Jamie Bell is holding his own, though. The clothes are definitely the real stars. Perfection.

  • I do not care what I we spend the night doing… I would just DO them…. LOL  Fabulous ad, Fabulous Fashion and a Fabulous Blog….

  • Ah, here we have the contrast between the men and women, right? The men, powerful, engaging, not all your stereotype of handsome… the women’s campaign in contrast is host to awful patterns in garish arrangements on skeletal models. It’s really sad how with the men Prada nailed it and left women swimming in the same sea.

  • Mike Schneider

So, are there brick and mortar stores where one can buy such ensembles?

  • Truly_Outrageous

Is it me or is Jamie Bell giving us some serious face? Props on the other men too but Im just crushin on Mr. Bell right now.

  • HM3

IMMACULATE. I love all of this.

  • Is that Teddy Roosevelt?

  • Kristoffer Nortun

Just a shame that whatever I did, or wore, I would never even approach this look…..

  • STEP ONE: Lose like a million pounds
    STEP TWO: Become comically wealthy
STEP 3: Dress like this 33% of the time

  • Dan Ballek

Looks like a gathering of the War of 1812 Appreciation Society.  What next, is the Urban Sombrero making a comeback?

  • Garrett, we all thank you for shaving that thing off your face. And don’t listen to the haters, you look absolutely gorgeous next to everyone here.

  • YES.

  • This is some serious Downton shit and I love the hell out of it. You go Prada.

  • I have NEVER been interested in things to wear, cloths, fashion etc. etc. now GOD DAMN ME I`m GONNA WEAR PRADA !!!! Doah … mind exploded
