Prabal Gurung Resort 2013 Collection

Posted on June 13, 2012

Inspired by the reclaimed wood sculptures of Canadian artist Aaron Moran; Prabal Gurung’s 2013 resort collection is a candy-colored mixture of modern silhouettes, laser-sharp tailoring, asymmetry, and florals, with just a hint of Asian and Eastern style influences. This collection feels bold and youthful, which is unusal for resort collections, which usually trade in ladylike and jetsetting as their main descriptors. Not that these aren’t ladylike or jetsetting, just that there’s a little bit more attitude on display here. It feels fresh.

Peplums are the work of Satan.

    • PaulaBerman

I was going to post this exact comment: down with peplums (pepla? peplii? whatever, I hate ’em!)

    • zmayhem

I actually rather like them — as a busty woman with a slowly but inexorably thickening waist, I’m grateful for every optical illusory bit of exaggerated hip-to-waist ratio a tricksy garment can give me.

      • Same here.

        • TheOriginalLulu

Me three. Don’t get the peplum hate. They give the illusion of a smaller waist. What’s not to love?

          • snarkykitten

when your hips are the size of Kansas, you don’t need any more damn attention to them

          • TheOriginalLulu

I see. But they do actually work beautifully for those of us who are more top-heavy. Honestly, those of us who are busty have to avoid many, many styles like the plague, so we’re giddy with happiness when we discover something that actually doesn’t make us look like a 3-man tent.

          • Tatiana Luján

that it looks as if you had a napkin tied to your waist

    • boomchicabowwow

I was just going to post “DEATH TO PEPLUMS”.  Relieved I’m not alone in my hate.  I think some bold designer should embroider “Caution: Wide Load” on the back of one and let it walk the runway.  Maybe the rest would finaly take the hint.

  • Rebecca Johnson

I like everything except the patterned bell bottoms. Those look like a bad acid flashback.

    • TheOriginalLulu

That’s kind of what I love about them. They’re just so groovy.

    • I love the pants. Most of them here are a boot cut which is what I wear all the time. The little bit of fullness balances out a body whose top half is heavier than its bottom half.

  • hughman

Very Hunger Games meets Florence Welch.

    • AuntieAnonny

With a little Zooey Deschanel sprinkled on top.

  • kimmeister

I like the peplums with piping.

Now can you show more Prabal Gurung himself?  That guy is cute.

    • MilaXX

I’ve been thinking the same thing every since I saw him with Zoe Saldana.

  • MilaXX

I’m still not 100% on board with the peplum craze, but overall a decent collection.

  • eight_of_nine

I prefer this over 99% of resort collections!  For some reason I’m loving those shiny blue flared pants, even though they should set off the Tacky Alarms in my head.

  • nannypoo

Except for the blue patterned hippie pants on the woman who looks like Florence Welch this is really an interesting collection. Well, and maybe I would also reject that yellow gown with the strange boob treatment. Otherwise, I’ll take one of each.

  • Love it! Except for the weird boob dresses.

  • Some of these looks are ridiculous (third look in top row.. ick), but some are acceptable.

  • j_anson

Oh, I really like this! Someday, fashion will get back to colors I can wear, but until then, at least I can admire!

  • another_laura

I like a lot of this but am lodging a complaint against the satiny looking fabrics in the second row from the bottom and those metallic-y blues.  I’m weary of this.

  • guest2visits

Alot of items that are fun and very pretty. Love that first dress, and some of the similar ones throughout.
Clothes for alot of very young celebs.

  • fursa_saida

I know I said I loved the Jason Wu collection, but fuck that. This shit is brill.i.ant.

    • Alisa Rivera

      I agree. I want everything.

    • Tamara Hogan

       Yup. LOVE.

  • filmcricket

Wow, at least half of this is like a Bat Signal for the Audrey-bot.

  • JasmineAM

    Reclaimed wood, you say? Ecologica???

  • So many cute pieces! Yes, please!

  • Designed for Florence Welch, it seems

  • This appeals to a lot of my sensibilities so I’m going to go ahead and give it my thoroughly biased support. I live for some weirdly patterned micro-minis.

  • DeTrop

Oh to be a teenager again!

  • Baditude

I see Jennifer Lawrence wearing the red gown in the last row.

I really love a lot of this. Pattern! Color! If only I had the means, I’d wear most of it.

  • In_Stitches

Total fabulousness.  It’s all a little schizophrenic, what with it’s busy prints and bold solids and its nod to mod aesthetic with some 70s flare (literal flare when it comes to the pants), but ultimately it’s beautiful, flattering and potentially viable.

  • I think all of those turquoise satin pieces are whack-a-do! Love the rest.

  • I love the color story and most of the silhouettes, but that shiny aqua is just dreadful.

  • ballerinawithagun

I love all of these and I’m a peplum fanatic!

  • RedRaven617

I’m seeing Zooey Deschanel in a lot of those dresses.

  • Judy_J

Most of these look like they would be fun to wear.  I’m not a fan of the super-shiny fabrics.  Love the prints.

  • MarissaLG

I’m not a fan of the bell bottom shape to the pants, but other than that I think this collection is beautiful and fresh.

  • anotherEloise

Liking a lot.  And they’ve got pockets!

  • marilyn

In general, I think the design is edgy and the fabric is prom.  The collection might be more cohesive if it were in edgier fabric-like leather, etc.  The 3 evening dresses on the bottom do not appear to have any relation to the other dresses.   These comments aside, it is an interesting collection, and will provide a wealth of interesting, newclassic separates for those who can afford them.

  • PeaceBang

I love a lot of these dresses and I’m sure we’ll be seeing them all over the place on lady stars. However, the Wide Crotch Band feature on so many of the garments pulls the eye where no eye really wants to be pulled, and that’s a serious design flaw.

  • kikisayshi

I really like most of these. Love all the fun patterns and colors.

  • PastryGoddess

Michelle Obama will cut a bitch for that yellow and white dress

  • gloriana232

I don’t get why women hate hips. Hips I find pretty sexy. Hips are not the enemy. The WAIST is. A smaller waist makes every other part of you look better. Smaller hips? Not necessarily. I guess my advice is to continue hating yourself … but on a different part (yay…?).
