Penelope Cruz in Emilio Pucci

Posted on June 21, 2012

While we’re still quite over lace dresses at the moment, we have to admit that certain ladies of Spanish or Italian descent get special dispensation when they choose well. Some types are just born for certain styles and the Latin ladies have generations of tradition to pull from when it comes time to work a black lace.

Penelope Cruz attends special screening of “To Rome With Love” in New York City in an Emilio Pucci burgundy lace off-the-shoulder long-sleeved cocktail dress with crystal and bead embellishment accessorized with Chopard jewelry.

Emilio Pucci Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

In so many women, this would look like too much, but she’s really pulling it off. If she’d laid off the bronzer on her legs , possibly went up a size, and chose some accessories in opposing colors, we might have called this a WERQ. She looks pretty amazing overall – and it’s not at all the kind of dress we’re inclined to like at the moment. It just suits her really well. It helps that the hair and makeup are drag-level flawless. And the jewelry is gorgeous.

Lookswise, she is at the top of my list of lady crushes. A classic smoldering brunette. Lace will always work for her, but agree that she might have sized up and switched up the shoes. Still, hard to criticize.

      • Sartorial_She

Yeah, I’d jump the fence for Penelope. This look doesn’t do anything to change that.

        • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Hell, I’d jump the fence for her.

    • Funkykatt

      Looks darn good, I think.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Still really not liking the matchy accessories today.

    • schadenfreudelicious

hair and makeup are perfection, dress a wee bit snug perhaps, but overall such a classic beauty..

    • Susan Crawford

The dress might be a skosh too tight, but when you have the body and the attitude and the hotness that is Ms. Cruz – viva! She looks amazing.

      • MissAnnieRN

Yup. Classic go up a size. Penny Cruz is not thick through the midsection and yet this dress tells a different story.

    • Twinzilla

She looks so elegant here I am going to over look the too tight dress.  I love the way Pucci took a traditional look — black lace with some jet accents — and made it look so chic.  I really like the way the modern pattern on the lace keeps it from looking like lingerie.

There’s something about the abstract lace that keeps it from being boring. Love it!

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Mmm…  she looks a little “Real Housewives of Madrid” for my taste.

      • Alisa Rivera

        Ha, brilliant!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Hasn’t Almodovar already made that film?

        • Little_Olive

          A bunch.
The rest are called Sex and the Spanish Accent.

      • Judih1

        Funny!

    • butterflysunita

I’m not wild about the dress, but she looks beautiful.  Hair and makeup are very pretty.

    • lamamu

I wish she was styled similarly to the model, giving the dress a little edge that she could have pulled off. As is: Mother-of-the-Bride-ish (Okay, a really sexy, Latina M-o-t-B).

    • michelle shields

      looks too bridesmaidy to me

    • shawnhunter

i think overall she pulls it off, but the shoes and nail polish upset me.

    • SpcilK

I don’t find it flattering at all. The dress is way too tight and looks inexpensive. This is the perfect look for a bridesmaid, especially the satin peep-toe shoe.

      • Lisa

Exactly – she’s too young to be MOtB, so I was going to say “Aunt of the Bride”, but bridesmaid works too.  It’s a very aging, very tacky looking outfit.

    • http://twitter.com/WhoraRabinowitz Rizzle

I am so glad she is back to form. That wet hair fiasco in the MK dress was nightmarish

    • bellafigura1

Yeah, she is one good looking woman, old skool.

    • Lisa Dugan

Love the dress, love the shoes, love everything but a little snug.

    • MilaXX

The hair and makeup are really pretty . Not gonna rag on the dress because I think a lot of the bumps are from sitting down and the under dress no longer being smoothed out.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love the dress, but agree that she could have gone up a size, and could have used less matchy-matchy accessories. But she still looks great!

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

The model is at home crying because she will never look that good in black lace.

    • PeaceBang

The fab hair, make-up and general Penelopeness makes this gorgeous, even though I don’t like the neckline on her.

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

As a lady of Italian descent, I also wear lace well. But not THIS well. She looks HOT.

    • AudreysMom

this kind of dress? in Penny’s DNA. She looks incredible.

    • mhleta

Love this color on her. I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I think I’d prefer it without the sleeves. She looks rather restricted by them and skin this lavishly gorgeous should be celebrated.

    • l3icest3r

She’s the only woman I can think of who could wear this and not look completely ridiculous. She looks good. I even like the matchy matchy shoes. Hair and makeup are perfect too.

    • frankystein123

Dayum, she certainly knows how to turn heads.

    • quiltrx

She looks beautiful.  I kind of want to think that the lining is wrinkly instead of too tight.  The only thing I’d change would be the dark nails.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

GORGE. Drop the silly satin pumps and she’s a WERQ for me.

    • SapphoPoet

Lovely. The dress is a bit too tight, but I like the accessories. Keeps the focus on the lace. I’m okay with lace dresses; perhaps because I spent part of my impressionable youth in Brussels, Belgium where lace is everywhere.

    • BrooklynBomber

I love her, she’s gorgeous; love Pucci, too. But egad what an ugly dress.

    • Sara__B

What a gorgeous woman! Even in a dress that’s too tight for a hootchie mama and satin hoofs that highlight big black toenails, she’s still extraordinarily beautiful.

    • lifetime_student

Somewhere Catherine Zeta-Jones is looking at these pictures and planning the bitch slap she is going to give the stylist that put her in that nude with black lace disaster at the Rock of Ages premiere.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

That is a busy over-embellished dress.  I despise lace dresses, especially colored ones.

Penelope is a stunningly gorgeous woman.  On her, that dress is perfection.

Apparently, Ms. Cruz can brainwash across the miles at will.

    • guest2visits

She looks beautiful, and I like the shoes and accessories. But there’s something about the dress that is a bit matronly.

      • formerlyAnon

More than “a bit,” IMO. It’s one fur stole away from grande dame. Only her beauty saves it.

        • guest2visits

yup.  I keep trying to ‘fix’ it; but it remains stubbornly a vision of ‘old Italy’ in my mind.
Someone posted bridalwear; mother in law’s dress, -  I think that probably nails it.

    • ms_kat

The fit is way too tight. She looks like she’s wrapped in a shroud of cobwebs. Face and hair, as ever, are great.

    • Lilyana_F

      Wow, she looks spectacular here!

    • TieDye64

Not wild about the dress, but she’s mostly making it work. And damn, face and hair are beautiful!

    • Thathoodwink

How can you tell there’s bronzer on her legs?

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Because they’re orange.

        • Thathoodwink

My laptop is being kind to her because they’re the exact color of the rest of her skin haha.

    • Charmella…a DIVA at large!

Nice…however, the ‘unforgiving’ satin lining is several smidges too tight.  I keep seeing Sophia Loren squeezed into the dress as well!

    • formerlyAnon

Her beauty – including the hair & makeup – is carrying the dress.

      • Lilak

Exactly!  Truly something to stand in awe of. If there’s anything else going on here, my comment is ‘nevermind.’

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Stone/100001328135240 Mary Stone

Save for the size issue and the black nailpolish (it does appear to be too tight but perhaps the underlayer got wrinkled in transit, there’s nothing more unforgiving of wrinkles than satin), THAT is how you do a lace dress.  Ladies, take note.

    • MarissaLG

Very pretty. I love the vampy look, and the long sleeves and short shirt perfectly communicate: “I am age appropriate while still showing off my banging body”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

It doesn’t really grab me. *shrug*

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I love it and I disagree about the fit. What absolutely NAILS it is that plum color.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

Her face and hair make this work. She is so stunning.

    • crash1212

I’m totally with you on this one T Lo. I am SO over lace dresses, but she’s really rocking this. I don’t even mind the matchy accessories. Beautiful woman in a beautiful dress…it’s all we ask.

    • http://twitter.com/dixielou8 Ashley

      LOVE the dress. LOVE!

    • ChaquitaPhilly

      Oooooooo…!

    • BazoDee

I think she looks lovely here. I would have loved some well placed color but that’s just a quibble. Her hair and make-up are perfection as is her posture with regard to her shoulders -so important when wearing a dress like this.

    • melanie0866

Perfect dress – FOR A CHRISTMAS PARTY.  It’s June!  Lighten up!

    • PinkLemon

too monochrome. could have used some turquoise jewelry.

    • mom2ab

It just looks so hot and heavy for NYC in June…but she does look amazing.

    • EEKstl

She looks gorgeous and I agree with the choice to go with a black shoe here.  It’s such a busy dress that I’d fear OVERLOAD if her shoes were anything but black and simple.  But she definitely should have gone with a neutral, lighter polish and she could have added a pop of color with her purse (methinks royal blue would have been nice…)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I don’t think her legs look any darker than the rest of her.  Gorgeous color on her.  I believe she wore this color to the Oscars one year.

    • MightyMarshal

I think I may be alone here, but I think she looks cheap. And highly flammable.

    • Patricia Gillett

Could have been transformed with a beaded bag and not a matchy one. As it is, it’s a “meh.” Great make-up, though.

    • Ksagun13

Meh.  I hate the way it looks so horizontal, I think it’s making her look wider and she has a great body.  Is it just the pattern or is it pulling across the torso?

Great color, though, and her hair and face are stunning.

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

      gorgeous

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

i bet she was turning heads at that event! love it!

    • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

I’m glad you said it about the dress size.  A shame that a girl with such a fabulous body has on a dress that makes her look…puffy.

    • mila_8

For some reason I think it should be Jane Fonda’s dress. Must be the arms…

    • loverungay

The woman would be gorgeous in a trash bag.
