Pairs Division: Venus & Serena Williams

Posted on June 25, 2012

There were never such devoted sisters.

And yes, now that song is stuck in your head. Just be happy we didn’t quote “Sisters Are Doin’ it for Themselves,” bitches.

Oh, shit. Now both of those songs are in your head. Sorry about that. Best just get on with it.

Venus Williams and Serena Williams attend the WTA Pre-Wimbledon Party in London.

Venus Williams in Amanda Wakeley

Serena Williams in Burberry

From the left:

SHE: Is wearing beige shoes with a white dress. We are quite comfortable stating that this exact combo on a pale, white girl would have triggered our fashion rage but on Venus, it only rates a “Meh.” Love the hair and the earrings (could’ve used more jewelry, though), but we hate the dress. It’s an awful shape on her. Score: 4/10.

SHE: Found the exact right cut and style of dress to suit her figure. Well done on that front. The color is great on her and the shape is doing all kinds of great things for her, but the dress looks heavy, stiff, and very wrinkled in the bust. On the other hand, the hair and makeup are spectacular and the necklace is pretty. On the other, other hand, the shoes are awful. Score: 6.5/10. Most of that’s for the hair and makeup.

Combined Score: 5.25/10. Oh, ladies. Call us. We’ll steer you right next time.

  • Venus’ dress is a sad, limp dishrag. Serena’s dress looks cheap and badly sewn, partly due to the lighting there, and partly due to the fabric choice.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I think they both look pretty good – compared to many many times before where I think they both have tended to be over the top/edging to vulgar.  It’s hard to pull off “high fashion” looks with such athletic bodies but they are both gorgeous!  I think Venus’ dress is perfect actually – softens out the hard edges.

  • introspective

Venus looks like she came straight from the court to the party. no makeup and oily face gets more than a meh from this corner, it gets a BOOOO. and yes, while she has the skintone to not look washed out in the white dress/beige shoe combo, taken all together, homegirl didnt even try.
Serena tried more than her big sis did, but the shoes and the stiff shiny dress that adds volume unnecessarily (a la Mila Kunis from last week) and to an already curvy figure to boot, also results in failure.
Both sisters are more fug than cute here. And that makes a rainy day on Monday in NYC that much sadder.

  • Judy_S

I don’t care for either dress-in the abstract or on them–but they look gorgeous anyway. The power of natural good looks over mere clothing.

  • MilaXX

Venus – I like the hair, but she needs to step it up in the makeup department. The dress & shoes are indeed meh” 4/10
Serena – I like the shape of the dress, but agree the fabric is too heavy and the shoes are tragic. The hair is a bit too wild for my taste. 5/10
    total score 4.5/10

  • DinaSews

Nothing to see here.  I’m going back to look at the Magic Mike post again…..

    • introspective

Girl, like times a million, cause I did just the same thing!!! after a few secs of staring at them and hating what i saw, had to go back and eye all that man candy.

    • SojournerYouth

I know! I tend to hate everything they wear, but think they are gorgeous girls.  Nothing here is too offensive, but nothing is good either.  At least they left the cornrows with plastic beads in the distant past!

  • I like Venus’ dress. She has legs for miles. I’m surprised how skinny they are, though! They look more like my chicken legs than what I’d expect on a world-class athlete.

Serena’s hair and makeup look fab, but I think there’s too much volume in the dress, and the stiff fabric doesn’t help. I’d rather see her in something that’s more fitted on the bottom; girl has great booty and thighs.

  • Frank_821

The sad part is Venus looks better than she normally does

  • Jangle57

Both should have spectacular physiques but you’d never know it by eithers dress and frankly, I can’t get past the traffic accident that is Serena’s shoes…..

  • I actually like Venus’ look here….if I don’t include makeup in the equation.  I think the dress is pretty flattering on her.  On the other hand, I think Serena looks like a wrinkled mess, and I don’t find the dress all that flattering to her.

  • BeeBeauNYC

This is the best Serena has looked in a long time, so props to her for that. They are amazing athletes, but fashionistas, they are very much not.

  • KaileeM

Loving Serena’s hair! And she looks fab in that cut and color. Given some of her other red carpet looks, I think this one should have been graded on a curve! That’s a C+ look, at least!

  • Pants_are_a_must

I defy you, overlords. That is the BEST Serena Williams has ever looked. WERQ, even with those shoes.

    Venus’ dress makes me sad.

    • Yes, except for Serena’s unfortunate shoes.

I can’t even look at poor Venus.

  • kimmeister

Yikes, I do not like what’s going on around Serena’s armpits.

    • Ogden1990

Why oh why did I scroll back up and look???

  • mjude

i love those girls but it must be hard to dress them no?

  • I wouldn’t be surprised if these were their tennis outfits.

  • Judy_J

Sorry, but those dresses just look cheap to me.  C’mon, girls….let Tom and Lorenzo be your guides to the wonderful world of fashion.  You both can look SO much better than this.

  • alyce1213

Terrible clothes on beautiful women.  They both have the most gorgeous teeth — how I covet those smiles.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Ugh, I just never like anything these two wear and it always upsets me tremendously to see women who are in great shape, yet can’t seem to dress their bodies.

I agree that the shape of Serena’s dress is a very good one for her, but the dress is otherwise an ugly, rumpled mess. That illusion netting on the bust also makes it look cheap, like she went to one of those prom dress stores at the mall. Her hair and makeup look soft and pretty, so kudos there.

  • Lina_bee

Love the hair and makeup. Hate the dresses and shoes. And I continue to cast Serena (in my head) as Wonder Woman, because DAMN. ♥

  • julnyes

I keep hoping these two will bring it on a regular basis, but it just is not happening and I don’t know why.

  • Imasewsure

BeeBeau said it best… “They are amazing athletes, but fashionistas, they are very much not…”

At least they were not wearing their own designs which are uniformly awful…hopefully they will both go in to sports commentary or business moguldom not fashion design once they inevitably retire…

  • Venus looks GREAT, and Serena looks like she’s wearing her mother’s bridesmaid dress. WHAT?

  • There were never such devoted sisters doin’ it for themselves would be an awesome mash-up.  Some DJ-type person needs to get on that stat.

    •  Hee Hee!  I love this idea.  In my twisted little head I am imagining Rosemary Clooney and Aretha Franklin doing this together.

  • Leslie Streeter

    Love them!

  • marilyn

Their dresses are great for each of them.  Venus has a tall thin model’s figure, and this dress works on her.  The color is good and she is tall and thin enough to carry off the drape.  Serena is shorter and curvier.  Her dress also works for her.  It is a great color and is designed to show off her curvy figure.  They both lose on the shoes.  They should have been wearing some summer sandal type shoes that are a little outrageous.

The problem with the  sisters is that they are posing in the same picture, and they are not coordinated with each other.  It is all too busy and the dresses fight one another for attention. It is a shame.  Individually, their clothes work for them.  But, not posing in the same picture.

  • fungstyle

Their hair and make up gays need to oust the fashion gays and just take over.

  • Candigirl1968

Had Venus turned up the wattage with  an interesting belt, jewelry and better makeup (cat eyes and pink lipstick just don’t work here), this might have worked.  Once again, Serena is wearing a dress that doesn’t fit her well (she needs better tailoring, some stickum for the bra, etc), shiny doesn’t do her any favors and the shoes are wrong.   4s all around.

  • Serena’s toes are CURLING over the front of the shoe. No, dear, a free small shoe is not worth it.

  • kristina batiste

    Venus! Ashy legs! Lotion, girl!!

  • TieDye64

Venus is looking pretty raggedy here. No bueno. Serena’s giving off a Chaka Khan vibe with the hair, and that’s never bad thing.

  • formerlyAnon

You can never go wrong putting me in mind of one of my top 5 movies of all time.  I will enjoy the tune & the mental image of Bing & Danny mincing about in half costume. [“When a certain gentleman arrived from Rome . . . SHE wore the dress, and I stayed home”]

Ahem.  Venus: 5/10: the dress is wrong and droopy looking, she needs a little more makeup and the [wrong] length of the dress and beige shoes together take her to the edge of raggedy, no matter how much money it all cost. But I like the hair and her smile.

Serena: 7/10. I can’t knock off any more than 3 points for stiff and wrinkly when the color & silhouette is right and her whole head looks so great. Actually, if she gave off a more trailing, frail, fashion victim vibe, I might wonder if the wrinkly, puckery look isn’t an intentional Design Feature. But she’s just so darn sturdy and healthy looking that I have to take her clothes at face value without positing fancy schmancy theoretically-grounded ugliness. I also don’t hate the shoes though they could be better.

    Combined score: 6/10. Huh.

  • butterflysunita

I would give them both higher scores.  But I may be biased because I think they are both fabulous.

  • AmandaCathleen

I wish Serena had found a better dress + shoes, because from the neck up she is KILLING it. Don’t think I’ve ever seen her look so gorgeous (I even like the heavy purple eyeliner.)

  • Trisha26

Both dresses look rumpled and messy. I’ll take Serena’s wild & free hair over Venus’s limp braids.

  • Those ladies never look on point :-/  I wish they would find a stylist

  • SophieCollier

Serena has never looked prettier!  Love the hair and makeup.  I actually like the dress on Venus, mostly because she usually opts for the worst possible outfits.  I don’t love the hair (girl looks like a drag queen) and her makeup is only so-so.

  • boweryboy

Venus looks like she has some seriously ashy legs and I’m not loving the braids.

Neck up Serena looks fierce.  It’s her musclular body that throws me for a loop everytime.

  • quiltrx

NO excuse for ashy legs/ankles on the RC!  And I hate to say it, but they both look a tad like busted drag queens.  Seen both look SO much better than this!

  • nancylee61

Too much fabric, all over the place. Don’ like either.

  • Lisa Dugan

Both dresses evoke neutral, it’s okay feelings for me.  Both pairs of shoes are terrible.  However, both ladies look beautiful and surpass the mediocrity below.  Serena especially looks gorgeous, love the hair!

  • guest2visits

Agree. These are both ok looks, I confess I like both their shoes.

  • Those are two amazing athletes, but they need some gays!

  • BookishBren

Why is Venus trying to look like Milli Vanilli?

  • Town

Venus looks ashy.  Cocoa butter, girl.

  • A Nigerian would say “money good ooooh!” in Pigin English. Read between the lines……
