Pairs Division: Garfield and Stone

Posted on June 13, 2012

Andrew “I’m totally bummed that Spider-Man is going to make me famous” Garfield and Emma “I’m totally Andrew Garfield’s girlfriend” Stone hit the catwalk and begin their poledance.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone attend the world Premiere of “The Amazing Spider-Man” in Tokyo, Japan. Emma Stone wore a Rochas dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

Rochas Fall 2012 Collection

Christian Louboutin ‘Love Me’ Bow Pump

HE: Clearly looks tortured by all the attention he’s getting. Still, despite his heavy burdens, he managed to put on a nicely fitted suit that looks good on him. No risk-taking here, but everything’s pretty much perfect. Score: 9.5/10.

SHE: Is allowed one backstage, full-on diva meltdown, complete with screaming, recriminations, and smeared mascara, for allowing herself to be talked into this look, every single element of which is problematic. First off, her makeup is weirdly aging. Secondly, her shoes are a size too big for her and don’t go with the dress at all (even if they match her eyeshadow). Third, that dress is – we’re just gonna say it, because that’s the kind of honest, up-front, no-bullshit kind of guys we are – kind of hideous. The whole look is beyond weird. We can’t imagine what sequence of decisions occurred to arrive at this point. Rue McClanahan’s old face paired with a dress that looks like it belongs on a Peanuts character. Score: 3/10.

Combined Score: 6.25/10. Emma! Andrew is going to be totally TORTURED by the fact that you didn’t try hard enough to support him! Try harder, Emma! Andrew needs you during this difficult time! God! What is WRONG with you?

Emma Stone is so pretty, and it makes me sad that she let someone do that to her.

    • EveEve

      Cute shoes, tragic dress.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Seriously! She needs to go and have a voodoo doll made of that person immediately. Use extra-long pins, Emma!!

    • If the skirt was longer she could play a wartime peasant in Game of Thrones, that’s how drab this dress is.

  • ccinnc

I was frightened for her, walking in those too-big shoes. Thanks, Andrew, for putting out a steadying hand.

(Is he hot?  He doesn’t appeal to me in the least.)

    • VioletFem

      Yes. He is.

    •  I don’t get it either. I don’t think it’s possible for him not to look smug.

    • schadenfreudelicious

how in the world does one not walk right out of their shoes when they are that oversized?

    • deathandthestrawberry

Hot is not a word I’d use, but I think he is cute.

    • Meh I don’t think he is

    • How hard is it to get loaner shoes in the right size?  This is a thing I’ve never understood.

  • kelsita421

her look is entirely horrifying! how can someone so cute/pretty look so… like that? there is no hope for us mere mortals.

  • The fit is weird. The fabric is odd. It needed to be brighter and shinier at the very least.

    • The fabric on the runway model seems to be iridescent while hers is flatter. Also, why would they bubble her skirt? The original looks so much better.

      • Derek_anny

I saw it as velvet, hence the sometimes iridescence.  The bubble is horrid, I agree.

  • Sobaika

I don’t think her look is bad enough to score a 3, but it sure isn’t good either. It’s funny, her makeup has taken a rather large turn for the worse since she’s become a Revlon spokeswoman. One would expect a lot better.

    • lordandtaylor

Well revlon has to smear on as much makeup as possible…need to push the product.

    • littlemac8

I can’t really tell much about her makeup but I think it’s the hairstyle that’s really the problem in this look – at least from the neck up!  Poor thing.

    • littlemac8

I can’t really tell much about her makeup but I think it’s the hairstyle that’s really the problem in this look – at least from the neck up!  Poor thing.

  • Sara__B

She seems so likeable and nice that it’s hard to be tough on her, but this is not a good look for her. In addition to everything T Lo mentioned, the hem looks as if she tucked it up with tape about five minutes ago. Her legs look great in those too-big heels but really charming heels, though.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Agreed!  What is going on with that hem?  Not to mention the neckline, which is weirdly loose. Can’t figure out those sleeves, either.  Love the shoes, but not with that dress.  And her hair and makeup both are aging her.  He looks fine.  Not my cup of tea, but that’s okay.

  • Jangle57

Is she wearing some sort of red tight under that dress?  Looks like it, peeping out just below the hem.  Perhaps that’s her way of supporting Andrew: by wearing tights of her own.  Maybe there’s a Spiderman insignia somewhere we can’t see…. Otherwise, her outfit is just plain yuck.

    • I think it’s the lights casting a red colored shadow on her legs.  It is strange.  As if she needed that to further diminish her overall look.

    • Maria Rosenfire

I thought that at first too, but I think it’s just really weird lighting choices making it look like she’s wearing tights. The lights are probably at least part of the reason her makeup looks horrible and the color and texture of the dress look so mind-bogglingly bad.

  • dsco3031

The dress looks like a thrown together Halloween costume. It’s lumpy and gives her such weird proportions… she is very tall and very thin and very pretty. How can you mess her up that badly?

Also, I can’t wait until those stupid toe-wedgie-window shoes go away. At least these aren’t fluorescent.

  • This commentary is utterly hilarious, thank you for that. Emma’s dress is a disaster and I don’t understand how it happened.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I saw that dress on other pop culture feeds and immediately thought that T&Lo would have a field day with it, though it really is just a classic case of full-on, might-as-well-be-covering-her-face-it-looks-like-a-potato-sack-THAT-MUCH, fug.

  • hughman

Her outfit is like a prom dress for monks.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OK that made my iced tea go flying onto my monitor via my nose.  Thanks Hughman! xoxoxo

  • i cannot stand his twilight style hair. it just makes me want to smack him.

  • She would have gotten a better score if she’d only worn the shoes.  Because the shoes are fucking amazing.

  • Too bad the shoes are too big, they are the only cute thing about this outfit…come on, girlcrush! Get your shit together! And dye your hair red again!

  • Poor Emma! What a total mess that thing is. The whole top looks oddly misshapen, as though it had been hanging on a padded hanger wrong for months. The only thing I can say is that that warm rich brown looks good on her. Too bad it’s that dress. He has just won a place on my “list of people I need never see again”.

  • Judy_J

I’ve always hated bubble skirts….never could understand the appeal.  I like those shoes, but as soon as I saw they were a size too big, that was it.  Don’t wear ’em if they don’t fit.

  • SapphoPoet

I’m a little worried for her, walking in those shoes that are CLEARLY too big. I hope he is a gentleman and gives her his arm because she’s gonna need it.

As for the dress, I’m quoting Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada: “That? I can’t even talk about that.”

  • “Kind of” hideous? Nope

  • LuisaNL

that dress is just a huge blob of ugly. the shoes are too precious. Emma, go back to your hotel and TRY AGAIN.

  • she has the figure of a 12 year old. i am confused by this. and when it is obvious, even through a photograph, that your shoes are too big despite the fact that you are a famous celebrity millionaire, there is a real problem in your life.

  • I bet her feet were KILLING her.

  • Well, sure, but the shoes are PRETTY.

  • VioletFem

What is up with these starlets wearing shoes that are too big for them? Are their feet so itty-bitty-minuscule that they can’t find a size that fits or what? As a girl who wears size 11 shoes I’m practically envious as that is almost never my problem when going shoe shopping.

  • BradWatson

I prefer to believe he’s up there snapping smiley selfpics to document how much he had to endure in this soul-crushing charade others call stardom. Even in such a heinous feed bag, she’s totally upstaging him.

  • unbornfawn

OMG. That is Rue McClanahan’s face! I can’t unsee it.

  • padma sallah

I think I could have lived with the top part of that dress. But that bottom, I just cant. Jesus, what the fuck is up with that hem?

  • crash1212

Thanks T Lo…I just had to explain to a co-worker why I was choking from laughter….answer? “Rue McClanahan’s old face paired with a dress that looks like it belongs on a Peanuts character.” Quite possibly the best sentence you’ve ever written.

  • Imasewsure

“Rue McClanahan’s old face paired with a dress that looks like it belongs on a Peanuts character.” Hilarious and insightful… she needs to drop the fashionista aspirations ’cause most of the time she just looks dumb….

  • lordandtaylor

Her dress looks like something tossed together on Project Runway and the person ends up in the bottom three. He looks so much better than in the previous post. But can we at least get him a fun tie or patterned shirt next time? See I told you the guy was hot.

  • LP

I’m gonna be a big weirdo here and say I kinda like it even though I normally hate drop waists.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I feel like I need the tiniest font to declare that I find her adorable here.

  • amywinns

It has to be terrible industrial lighting in some kind of airplane hangar-type building because there’s no way that dress looked like that in normal conditions. Wrinkly, weird texture, shadowy. And her face and hair are washed-out beige. Ugh. Shoes unforgiveably large… all these size 7 celebs need to figure out how to stick an insole or toe pad into a borrowed shoe to fill up the space better. WTF kind of stylist throws gunboats on a girl and wishes her luck managing the stairs??
And I’m thinking he is not taking self pics, but rather documenting what I am guessing is a crazybananas fandom scene, because she seems quite amused by the experience… that doesn’t read as a “hi, y’all” smile, it’s a “y’all krazy, but thanks” smile.

  • ha, ha!! Pauvre Andrew.

  • janetjb

I don’t mind the color on her.  Too bad her feet are the wrong size.

  • butter nut

    it’s a poop dress.

  • RebeccaKW

I love those shoes!  But how can she walk in them?  I mean, without tripping and falling down the stairs, or without losing one in her trek across the stage?

  • sockandaphone

jesus christ that is ONE UGLY DRESS.

  • MsKitty

Rue McClanahan’s old face paired with a dress that looks like it belongs on a Peanuts character.

See, that’s why I love you two to bits.

  • kimmeister

    Well, I like her hairstyle . . .

  • MilaXX

I don’t think I would have scored him quite so high. he could use some color or pattern somewhere. Still good effort, 8.5/10

She is a hit mess here. Odd dress made even worse by being wrinkled. It looks like something from PR’s burlap sack challenge only this time the designer dyed the sack before over designing the hell of it. I don’t mind the shoes with the dress, but I do mind that they are too big. Hair is so so, but makeup is sorely lacking. 3/10 is being kind because she can do so much better.

Total score 5.75/10 Emma better step it up

  • clairellis

After reading your Twitter post about how Andrew doesn’t want to be famous (crock of shit) I’ve pretty much lost any respect I had for him…but he still looks good. Emma fire who ever styled you in the poo colored dress and ask them if they know what size shoe you wear bc it isn’t that size…

  • Wendi126

Put a silver sparkly cape over her, and Emma is a Hershey kiss. And it still would be in the bottom 3 of the PR challenge. It needs to melt or she needs to be eaten

  • Beardslee

    Those shoes – ouch!

  • snarkykitten

is it just some kind of cosmic law that any actor who plays Spiderman comes off as a smarmy douche? to say nothing of Miss Stone’s utterly tragic dress

  • She is so fricking adorable!  WHY Emma, WHY??????????????

  • argonauticos

yikes…that’s the worst she’s looked that I’ve ever seen.  She’s usually so cute!

  • Its nice to see a designer trying to use burlap in a dress tho…that IS burlap right? maybe a new Project Runway challenge? blech. at this was in Japan where no one will see it?

  • Spicytomato1

Wow, other than her dress looking completely wrong for the season (love the styling on the model’s version), I think she looks kinda cute. Definitely higher than a 3. Higher than a 5, even.

    I’m still over him.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

she is doing that ‘ehrmagerd’ girl’s facial expression.  reddit has ruined me.

  • giiiirrrr

I adore that Emma seems to be such a love ’em and leave ’em kind of gal.  Jason Sudeikis – call me!

  • Pannyx

That has got to be one of the most viciously hideous dresses I have ever seen.

  • GorgeousThings

I thought you were going to ID the dress as vintage 80s prom wear. Someone needs to take that bubble skirt trend out back and pop a cap in its head. I’ll even volunteer to do the deed.

I have to wonder if Louboutins look big on most people because the heels are so high that they slide down into the toe box? I’ve seen women in Neiman Marcus try on a pair that seem to be fine, but then when they stand up, the heel height and arch of the sole acts like a big ol’ slide and they smoosh themselves into the toes.

  • that dress looks like a mistake.  like, a sartorial interpretation of the word “mistake”.  the shoes are way too big and good god, that dress…painful.  he looks great.  she needs to go to her room and think about what she did.

  • Whoa I totally disagree, I actually think the dress is chic (although I will admit it doesn’t photograph well) and I LOVE those shoes. It’s not the greatest look I’ve ever seen, but I get why she chose it. It looks comfortable and appropriate for the event. I also really love her hair like that – twisting the bangs like that is one of my favorite things to do when I’m growing my own bangs out, so I get a happy face whenever I see celebs do it, too.

  • iCouture

Wow, if you guys cant stand them sooo much, why do you incessantly post them??  Seems weird to me.
I love them both, so I have no complaints.  But the comments…..geeeez… ease up for godsake!!

  • another_laura

Ms Stone’s look — geez, the color is great and I kind of love the hairdo but then….  ick to every single thing else!

  • YourLibrarian

My mom made that dress for me in red for my 8th grade dance in 1987.

  • Laura Valentine

This is one of those dresses that I LOVE on the runway — love the styling, the shape, everything — but it doesn’t work in the rest of the world nearly as well.  Some tailoring so it fit her better and a giant necklace would have gone a long way, though.

  • donkeygospel6

She makes a great hag if you know what I mean.

    •  Are we throwing shade? LOL!

      • donkeygospel6

If you mean the shade of the closet…then yes.

  • KaileeM

    I’ll take those shoes, Emma!

  • Well…. I like Emma’s hair. I wish I would wear my hair that way. And her shoes are pretty cute to boot. But the dress is awful.

  • One needs a bath and the other needs an iron.

  • sk8tfan

He is a homely douchebag who was basically playing a richer version of himself in “Social Network.” She needs to go back to red hair and both fire and blacklist her stylist. I don’t buy the two of them as a couple for one second; maybe she’s secretly undermining him in revenge against the producers for forcing her into this faux relationship. Emma, I hurt for you, honey.

  • Warrior89

I kind of love the shoes.  The rest is WTF and not okay under any circumstances.

  • guest2visits

He looks pretty nice. Her dress.. is falling apart on her. The shoulders, the hem, the sleeves.. what is the material ?
The shoes are dangerously over large.  If this were alot shorter, it could be a top from American Apparel or Forever 21.
She’s so pretty; this was just a miss.

  • rumcg66

God, this is just painful. I *love* Emma Stone and really can’t stand Andrew Garfield, so to see him pretty much hit a home run and her miss so badly is killing me.

  • Andrew is an absurdly humble person who just wants to be an actor at the end of the day. The fact that he is trying to stay grounded and keep from being totally carried off by the fame sideshow is a pretty damn refreshing concept in Hollywood. At Death of a Salesman he came out every night, even when it was pouring rain, to talk to the people who waited to see him and sign autographs, and on the closing night of the show he brought balloons to give out to all the fans who were there. He is pretty much the least smarmy douche in the world.

  • snarkalicious

Ok, I wore a dress this exact shape to my freshman-year Sadie Hawkins dance in 1990.  The top was peach and the bottom was black lace over peach taffeta.  And it STILL looked better than this fugly brown number.  Fail.

  • I actually like her dress, but it definitely needs something to help the whole look stand out. And the shoes are way too big.

    • Lilak

Yup … runway version works fine for me, on account of the patterned tights, statement necklace, and bold lip.  Remove all the interesting stuff, as Miss Stone has done, and all you’re left with is an empty bulletin board.

And yup again … Besides looking silly, you can’t navigate safely with that high a heel if you’re sloshing around inside the shoe.  Is some rival actress paying someone to create an ‘accident’ to remove Emma from the field of play for a while?

  • Nonnah

She is becoming a Celebrity I Irrationally Hate (CIIH) because she’s reminding me of Elizabeth Banks…. who I Irrationally Hate.  I know.  It’s the hair.

  • PaulaBerman

That dress looks like a rumpled sack with a bunch of taters in the bottom of it. Oh Emma!

  • Beth G

    Her luggage got lost?

  • Markatha

    I still don’t like him!

  • Bozhi

She looks awful.  Why a fall dress anyway?  And she looks like she slept in that makeup and hair.

    • Candigirl1968

Not just a fall dress, but a dress that looks like it’s practically corduroy.

    • judybrowni

It’s obviously a borrowed, free dress, and apparently, the designer was only handing out his fall or winter line.

  • judybrowni

What the hell is that thing? And what the fuck is it made of? Can’t even describe the color.

Also: WTF makeup — and hair color.

Shoes are cutey, cute, cute — too bad they didn’t have ’em in her size.

  • Poor Emma. She’s competely forcing the smiles. I don’t know if that’s because she’s uncomfortable in the dress/shoes or it is because her pretend-boyfriend is such a douchbag.

  • Dhammadina

I think she is wearing a sofa with skirts.  Explains the color at least.

  • So here’s a question:  I’ve noticed at lot of ladystars wear RC shoes that are a size too big – presumably the shoes are borrowed which explains that size thing – do they tape their feet into the shoes?  How can they walk?

  • fursa_saida

You guys do know that she’s in the movie too, right? You make it sound like she’s only there because she’s his girlfriend.

    •  You do know that we’re here to talk about her outfit and not a rundown of her film projects, right?

      • fursa_saida

Whoa, okay, was not intending to come across as pissy as apparently I did? I just thought it was odd.

  • boomchicabowwow

I’d like to say – in a teeny tiny whisper: “I kind of like the dress, especially the skirt.”   *Runs quickly form the room*

  • mhleta

The only excuse I can offer is perhaps she didn’t want to upstage him on his important day. But, other than that I got nothing to explain this sad brown lump of a dress and the “let’s play dress-up” fit on the shoes. She’s Emma, though. So we’ll kiss her on top of her head, give her a look and hope it doesn’t happen again.

  • Srw27

Her dress looks like a prom dress from 1985. And that color is not flattering on her.

  • CatherineRhodes

I think her hair and make-up are pretty.

  • formerlyAnon

Man, not with you on her at all, today.

    Him, I’ll give you.

She’s lacking the necessary jewlery and her makeup underwhelms and the shoes don’t fit. But I think they’re cute and go with the dress well enough – my “matchy matchy” side thinks the bow on ’em should be chocolate brown, but otherwise o.k.

The dress looks like a poorly homemade skirt is attached to a slightly misfitting top. But the top looks o.k. in the pics from the front, though misfitting from the side view, and I am assuming the wonkiness in the skirt is intentional?? (I never know with designers, I’m just not tuned in to the zeitgeist.) Maybe I’m too forgiving because I think the color is good on her & would look awesome with a collar/necklace that picked up the shine of the shoes.

But I’m o.k. with it and if she’d done some bigger jewelry. Because she’s so little and cute that if the look is wonky and poorly made, intentionally or not, she still is cute. She: 7.5/10, him 9.5; combined score 8.5.

  • Lilithcat

That dress is way cute!  Shoes would be better if they fit.

  • NicholasGirling

Is Emma playing a tree in a middle school play?

  • oohsparkley!

Everything TLo said. Her dress is hiddy and yet she’s still cute as a basket of puppies.

  • PeaceBang

Her facial expressions are so great. She’s trying so hard to have fun, but she’s hating it. Those shoes are so fabulous I don’t even mind that her feet are falling out of them. But the hair, the make-up, the Lucy Van Pelt dress (which I do like a lot as styled on the model) and above all, the terrible COLOR on her… not a good showing for my adorable Emma.

  • granddelusion

Rue McClanahan’s old face as opposed to her new face? 😉

  • quiltrx

Those shoes are SO cute, but that much too big is dangerous!!!  I’m guessing someone mistook a number…a 5 for an 8, a 7 for a 9, something…

  • Judith Mignault

I bet she just plainly threw the shoes the minute she went offstage…

  • I hate when female celebrities wear shoes that are the wrong size. HATE IT.

  • Monabel

That’s an elegant dress in my view. Perhaps not for this occasion.

  • msdamselfly

    I like the dress
