Pairs Division: Garfield and Stone in Berlin

Posted on June 21, 2012

All right. Let’s get this over with.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone attend the Germany premiere of “The Amazing Spider-Man” in Berlin.

Andrew Garfield wore jacket, pants, and sweater by Gucci.

Emma Stone wore dress by Andrew Gn, shoes by Christian Louboutin, and jewelry by Repossi.

You know you want to.

HE: Is wearing a sweater in June. We don’t care what the weather is like in Berlin this week (cool, but not exactly freezing, it turns out), a sweater looks silly at this time of year. You don’t see your co-star layering up, do you, Andrew? Our love of plaid is immense, but we really don’t love the cut of this jacket. The lapels are pretty wide and the split is distracting with a two-toned sweater peeking out from it. Everything looks expensive and fits him well, but it all would have worked much better if he’d just ditched the sweater. Score: 7/10.

SHE: Kept it simple, and for that, we thank her. Granted, it says something about how unnecessarily fussy her clothes have been lately that we can look at shoulderpads, boob corseting, and a big waist bow, and call it “simple.” Still, the fact that it’s all white keeps it from being overwhelming. We’re a bit surprised she looks so good in white, actually. The hair is a huge improvement over recent attempts. Her lip still looks too red for us, but that’s a really minor complaint. Score: 8.5/10.

Combined Score: 7.75/10. Not bad. Definite signs of improvement.

  • I feel like Sue Ellen could be wearing her dress. Something about it screams Dallas socialite.

    • lordandtaylor

      Amen sistah!

      • T+Lo are right, as usual, lose the sweater.  While you’re at it, you can lose the smug vibe,

  • Hate his sweater – the neckline, chunky knit and contrasting rib band at the bottom all make this a sweater to never put under a jacket.

    Also hate her dress.

    • l3icest3r

And his sweater looks like a woman’s sweater.

    • l3icest3r

I also hate her dress. It looks like something from David’s Bridal.

      • she looks like a secretary getting married for the second time at the courthouse on her lunch hour.

  • Her:  All I can see is Linda Evans in Dynasty, and that is not a good thing.  Him:  SHAVE YOUR FACE. Hipster English Professor is not your look.  T+Lo are right, as usual, lose the sweater.  While you’re at it, you can lose the smug vibe, too.

    • He’s probably trying to look “manly” for his superhero movie parade. Instead, he looks like he just hit puberty.

      •  I remember how hard I tried to grow a stache when I was 16.  In retrospect, it looked pretty silly.

    • deltabronze

When your facial hair resembles bread mold, shaving is a must.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Your comments almost always reflect exactly what I’m thinking, Kiltd – WHEN is this stubbly nonsense going to end??  He seems like an insufferable twat IMHO.

      • Great minds, etc. ( insert sly smile). The only thing I find appealing is his hair. Okay, so I like the jacket, too.

        • i do not get the appeal of him at all.  yuck.  bread mold, indeed.

  • nannypoo

She looks very pretty. I can hardly wait until this movie is a thing of the past and she can finally be rid of him. I would be willing to bet that she feels exactly the same.

    • VioletFem

She’s actually dating him. So unless their relationship turns sour by the end of the summer I doubt she feels the same.

      • But is she really, really dating him or just contractually dating him?

        • AnaRoW

My guess is she’s really dating him because I don’t really think people care enough about the two of them that they’d go see the movie just because they’re dating.

Also, I really can’t figure out why people hate him so much. I get some people find him smarmy but how does that make him different from just about every other actor his age?

          • Elizabeth Davis

I, for one, just don’t get his appeal AT ALL. I’m more than willing to hear arguments in his defense, but he just seems so unremarkable and downright homely. I guess that’s what makes the smarminess harder for me to bear.

          • eggs-zack-leeeee.

  • mjude

seeing someone in a sweater after the last few days of a heat wave in my town makes me sweat.  i acutally think she looks cute even though i dont totally love the dress.

    • MilaXX

THIS. I just realized I forgot to go to the post office yesterday and I’m mad cause it means I have to go back out in the heat.

    • Spicytomato1

I was thinking the same thing about his getup, makes me fee sweaty and itchy. I think Emma looks great. I don’t hate her dress but I do hate her shoes. A lot.

    • crash1212

I live in San Francisco…and it’s about 52 degrees right now and it’s 10AM. I’ll be pulling the boots, tights and sweater out of the closet today. Summer in the City! If you don’t bring your woolies to our fair City in June you freeze your butt off!

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I hear you, fellow west coaster!  We call it Juneuary here in Seattle.  😛  Never gets hot until after the 4th of July – and “hot” is a relative term here, meaning over 70 degrees.

        • It’s so good to read others experiencing a June like mine in the Bay Area– the fog is here!

        • Aurumgirl

Well, this is our second day in a row with degrees well into the 90’s, but with the added kick of humidity to push it over the 100 degree mark.  So that sweater, even indoors where it’s cool and dim, makes me feel like I’m suffocating in here.

      • StellaZafella

I’m living in Seattle, current temp cloudy and 64 degrees…no big deal.
But SF is and always will be home…miss it terribly sometimes!

  • Ali

She looks good in all white because she’s not really a redhead. It’s a very rare redhead who can wear white. Her shade of blonde is starting to look a little bit better – more closer to her natural color, although perhaps its because they’ve actually got her in the right shades of makeup.

  • AmandaCathleen

I actually really like his look—he’s on my “irrational celebrity hate” list, but I have no complaints about him here. As for her… I’d love this if it didn’t have the shoulder pads. For me, shoulder pads like that always look dated, and this is no exception. I’d give him 9/10 and her 6/10.

  • I wish she would go back to the dark or red hair.  Do not like the bleach blond on her – makes her look washed out.

    • I believe she is a natural blonde. Red hair happens to suit her exceptionally well.

  • She looks more and more like Elizabeth Banks every time I see her, lately. It has to be the hair – I’d never thought that before.

  • MK03

    Andrew Garfield = YUM.

  • BazoDee

Gosh she has a pretty smile. If that’s the first thing I notice then that isn’t bad IMO. Don’t love the shoulderpads but she pulls it off decently.
I just cant ever get with his looks. I have a mental block on him.

    • Spicytomato1

Haha, I know what you mean about “mental block.” I’m the same way with Chris Hemsworth. He looks exactly the same to me in every photo even though I know he can’t be wearing the same thing every time.

      • BazoDee

        EXACTLY This!

  • Forget about weather appropriateness, that sweater should only appear on a senior Professor of Hisotry or something, NOT on an actor starring in a big Spidey movie.

  • Corsetmaker

I’d rather have had a full pic of Rhys Ifans

    She’s fine. a bit Dynasty.

    • Aurumgirl

In that photo, she looks like she’d rather have Rhys Ifans too.  And who could blame her?

  • mshesterp

Why do I actually feel bad for thinking every time I see a picture of him, I want to hit him?  He just looks so…guh.  Is it the way he holds his head?  Or just his face?  Or his posture?  I find him very slappable.  And I feel badly about that!  That’s not a good reaction.  He might be a super nice guy, I have no idea.  But…I’m mentally resisting wanting to punch him somewhere.

I like the jacket, would’ve been better without the sweater.

She looks very cute, although I would’ve gone with different shoes.

    • Spicytomato1

I know what you mean. Hollywood’s equivalent of Pete Campbell?

      • TropiCarla

Also, I love Emma so much I can’t believe she can stand him for more than a couple minutes. Just watched Zombieland again last night and it renewed my fervor. 🙂

    • Dr. Derf van der Derf

I feel the same exact way. The way he looks at the camera just makes me want to slap him!
He is definitely on my irrational celebrity hate list.

  • schadenfreudelicious

i think i’ve about reached my saturation point with these two…

  • Megan Patterson

I always like to think about the country they’re in and why the stylists might have chosen the outfit for that country. Like, Emma’s outfit at the Paris premiere probably wasn’t one of her best, but it was very FRENCH, you know?

  • MilaXX

I hate that sweater he’s wearing (in JUNE!) with this. I’d give him a 6.75/10
She looks good, but I hate the Dynasty shoulders on that dress. 8/10

  • TheOriginalLulu

Her: That’s a really ugly dress, but she looks really good! Also surprised that she looks so good in white. I don’t mind the lipstick; I think it’s the makeup that’s keeping her face from looking washed out. I give her a solid 9.

Him: I like the jacket a lot, but couldn’t agree more about that awful sweater. He always has the strangest expressions on his face, doesn’t he? In the first pic, he looks annoyed, perhaps at something somebody shouted out to him. Second pic, he looks like he just realized he forgot something. Maybe he forgot to put on underwear today and his pants are chafing his nuts? Third pic he looks like he has gas. Fourth pic, he just accidentally passed wind and is trying to look nonchalant.

  • StellaZafella

I’m gonna get slammed for this but I can’t help myself. I’ve thought this since the first pics came out of Mr Garfield.
I’m sure he’s a worthy talent and there’s a moment in the previews ad that makes me chuckle a bit, but, in some of the shots I’ve seen here in TLo where he tries to look blue steel(ish) I think it looks like what you’d get if you let all the air out of Robert Pattinson. Maybe it’s the hair…?

    • A deflated Robert P? Ha ha ha. That is the worst thing! But I think Andrew is slightly more likable than the vampire dude. Andrew’s been great in “Boy A.” Whereas Robert P just… well… I don’t know. I never sit through the twighlight thing.

  • Little_Olive

Oh that sweater is a crime! Bad enough on its own, terrible choice for the outfit.

The fabric on that jacket looks like a couple of months’ rent. Gorge. Why does it fit him so weird? Like tight on the chest, too open below the button, kinda large on the shoulders. From previous assessments I’m gathering either he is odd-shaped or someone there wants him to look like a rich hipster.

To sum: Kid, take notes form Nolan.

    I miss Nolan.

    • formerlyAnon

Based on some of the men’s wear I’ve seen on this site lately, that snug fit with a weird cut-away of the jacket front beginning at about belt level is an actual style. On all but the slimmest it’s got to be unflattering, on the slim it just looks like they need to buy a better fitting jacket.

Ah well. Like everything else [except sheer skirts over granny panties], if it sticks around long enough we’ll get used to it.

      • Lori

I’m probably just feeling unnaturally generous today, but I sort of agree about the fashion aspect of the jacket’s cut. I don’t like it, and the sweater is ridiculous in June, but I’m inclined to cut him some slack just for having made the effort. He does give off a sort of douchey vibe & I still have zero interest in seeing this movie, but at least unlike so many other guy stars he doesn’t look like he stopped by the photo call on the way to Home Depot. I’m willing to bump him up a point just for looking like he’s working instead of on the way to get something to stop the toilet from running unless you giggle the handle every time you flush.

  • jmorino08

I kind of love everything about these looks! Even the sweater in June because he is wearing it so well!

  • teensmom99

    Hello, Alexis Carrington!

  • Jesus, 8.5? That dress is HIDEOUS.  .5/10

  • formerlyAnon

I’d have allowed him an 8 for the ensemble, but subtracting for the perma-stubble, we’re back to a 7.

I dislike the ’80s feel to her dress, but she looks good and suitably dressed-up and they go well together, so I’ll allow her an 8. If she’d gotten rid of the bow at her waist it would have been higher. Combined score, 7.5/10 which actually feels low to me.

I do hope there’s at least something between them because if not they’ve got to be really, really sick of each other by now.

  • Susan Crawford

I will cut Andrew Garfield a lot of slack just because he’s so darn cute, but I think TLo was generous in their rating of this outfit. I would have gone with maybe a 6/10 because of the sweater and the kinda douchy plaid jacket. But that face . . .

Emma, please ditch that neon lipcolor soon! I generally liked the idea of the suit, but maybe it was a little overworked with lacing, and nipping, and tucking and all. But again, I cut Emma slack, too, because of the cuteness factor.

Goldang it, cute folks can get away with the darndest things.

  • Super_Red

I kind of adore his entire look, actually. Sitting in sweltering DC this afternoon, I hate him that he can get away with cold weather clothes, but he looks amazing. She looks really lovely, but Emma Stone is so freaking gorgeous that I hate that her stylists haven’t found “her” look yet. She could knock it out of the park every time because she’s so beautiful, and yet it’s always hit or miss.

  • gsk241

Does he stand in front of a mirror all night practicing facial expressions so he can just run through them all at a photo shoot the next day?

I’m not a fan of plaid (Sorry, TLo!), but I definitely agree that the sweater detracts from his look especially in contrast to the pretty little white dress Emma is wearing.

  • msdamselfly

These are some of their better looks. They both look well put together.

  • susu11

Oh God, I’m really sorry to body snark, but all those layers make Andrew Garfield’s tiny yet bulbous head look even more obvious. I feel extra bad because my sister’s boyfriend looks really similar to him so I feel like I’m making fun of him by association. I thought Garfield was really charming during promotions for the Social Network, but lately he seems like he’s trying too hard.

All those details on Emma’s dress feel like they’re competing against each other when I look at them closely. Thank God it’s a white dress otherwise I feel like it would be too much to process. I think without the laceup front and bow it could have looked really sophisticated.

  • Lilak

Sorry, but I can’t give Miss Stone anything close to an 8.5:  That white garment looks a couple of decades out of date, and I wish she’d rethink pulling her hair back if she’s going to leave the sideswept bangs just sort of orphaned out front.
As for the lipstick:  That shade does look better in person — those saturated brights don’t photograph well at all.

  • shawnhunter

*insert predictable comment about him looking like a douche*
anyway, i think they both look great. emma’s make-up is still a little weird, but better than she’s been sporting in the past. andrew is pulling off that whole look and i don’t know if many other guys would be able to. but, yes, i agree the sweater is too much.

  • kimmeister

I actually think he looks fantastic, although I agree that it’s not seasonally appropriate.  Her look would be improved without the big bow and with different shoes (perhaps a metallic).

  • j_anson

I dunno, I’ll take goth queen over this any day.

  • I’ve had some issues with Emma lately, but this is really cute, I’m a fan.

That sweater is unacceptable in this context.

  • afabulous50

He is #1 on my list of stars I irrationally hate…

  • I’m surprised not to be that bothered by his clothes, since generally I get such a strong whiff of smugasshole off him that I can’t stand to see him. I don’t like the neckline of the sweater, but I’m not bothered that he’s wearing one and on the whole, I like the look more than I dislike it. I think I just appreciate that he’s pretty well always put together and wears interesting clothes. He could have shown up in ratty jeans with scruffy shoes and three buttons undone on his untucked shirt.

  • unbornfawn

I don’t care how good they look. I’m tired of them.

  • I just do not get the appeal of this guy.

  • theblondette

Since the Spidey pressaggeddon started he’s started coming across as waaaay more douchey than he ever did before. But I like her. Even when her clothes are bad she looks like a sweet girl you’d like to have a Cosmo with.

    • AthenaJ

The doucheyness of that guy is now rolling off the screen in waves… God help us all, especially Emma.

  • I think I have reached my Garfield/Stone saturation point.  I don’t care what they are wearing anymore and get twitchy knowing there are more posts to come. I can only imagine how our Dear Gay Uncles T+L must feel… *exhausted*

  • He looks cute but is trying too hard, she looks cute even though I don’t like that dress, and I’m sick to death of both of them.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

she’s so much prettier than he is that it’s hard to take them seriously posed side by side like that. otoh, i finally see why he was cast as a superhero. couldnt have been any other than spiderman: his resemblance to an anthropomorphic spider is really uncanny. otoh, i dont mind either of them & they look quite sartorially nice today.

  • LANDRU3000

Sorry, but he looks like somebody’s dad and she looks like a game show hostess.

  • Lina_bee

Huh. Okay, I don’t like either of their outfits, really, but AG’s expression seems relatable to me for the first time ever. I have a couple of friends who attended this event and they said AG & ES both seemed utterly exhausted but very charming. I’m sure everyone will be thrilled when this junket is done.

  • lordandtaylor

WILL THIS PROMO TOUR EVER STOP. ENOUGH ALREADY! Sorry about the shouting. It has been a hard day.

I know his clothes are pricey but he looks like a rumpled mess. Perhaps the look he is going for is a young Henry Higgins. Please shave for your big promo tour…you can be lazy the rest of the year.  Pics of Andy always look like someone’s big head photoshopped onto someone’s body. It is kind of twilight zone – ish.

She looks like something Carrie Bradshaw would wear to impress a future mother-in-law. The dress is an odd combination of restaurant hostess and high school graduation from a catholic school. I am positive we could find something better at Lord and Taylor, of course.

  • BeeBeauNYC

The more I see pics of them the less I want to see this movie, and I had no interest in even seeing it at all.

  • TomBord

Which is more frightening; his jacket or her padded shoulder slash gathered sleeve head?

  • Vodeeodoe

I LOVE his pants! That white dress just showcases what an amazing face that girl has. I’d do a doubletake for her, even if she was wearing jeans and a big old t-shirt. Him, not so much. I’d do a doubletake for those pants though.

  • Vodeeodoe

PS – That white dress looks like something Nolan Miller designed. Thank goddess it’s all white.

  • Lilithcat

I don’t know what it is about him, but he just looks one of those guys who thinks they’re better than everybody else, but they aren’t. I think it’s that condescending smirk he always wears on his face.  Which also ruins whatever he wears on his body.  I can’t get past it.

  • Dear Andrew Garfield,
Whoever told you you were the second coming of David Tenant was pulling your leg. QUIT IT.

  • AngelaGreen

Does anyone else feel like she’s got more chemistry looking at Rhys Ifans than she does with Garfield? Granted, Ifans is dating Lonely Tourist Charlotte Charles, and long may that last, but still.  I just don’t really get Garfield.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Cheerio, old chap. Pip pip, Andrew! I think he looks like he wants people to think he’s Benedict Cumberbatch. (I just love saying Benedict Cumberbatch.) Maybe I mean Sherlock Holmes, but whatev, he looks stuffy and silly in a fusty old Brit way. She looks like she just popped out of a time tunnel from 1983. I don’t mind the white, but I do mind the shape, the shoulderpads and the bow.

  • Elizabeth Bauer

Would it kill her to throw on a pair of earrings?

  • I was sort of interested in the seeing the Spidermovie, but the more and more I see of him (on here) the more and more douche-y he is looking. Can I really suspend disbelief on a screen that Peter Parker is not this d-bag? for 10 bucks I am thinking Redbox for a buck….when will his (bad) pole dancing stop?

  • Apparently her stylist likes to play up her paleness now that she’s blonde.

  • I beg of you, a break from posts of this couple.  We’ve all got Spidermanpoledancing fatigue.

  • Didn’t Sharon Stone wear that dress in Total Recall?

  • Caaro3

As Esther Smith would say, “I HATE, LOATHE AND DESPISE” that dress.  They are a really cute couple, though.

  • mom2ajs5

I had never heard of him until he started showing up here. For whatever reason, I have an intense dislike for him. I love her though and hope she dumps him soon.  Not loving either look here either.

  • I was just wondering — did it take more product and more time to do Andrew’s hair or Emma’s?

  • Moanica

they look so hilariously uncomfortable together in all their press

can’t wait til this ridiculousness is over

  • drdirection

good god, this movie better be awesome

  • Lisa Dugan

I think he looks much better than he has recently but again, too warm for June.  She looks very pretty.

  • elemspbee

She: dress looks like a mother of the bride/groom outfit.
He: is he ok? He’s not looking good. Hair needs cutting, face needs some care. He’s not rocking this sleep-deprived look.

  • I don’t know what it is about Andrew Garfield, but he always annoys me. I don’t know if it’s because he looks like he doesn’t care how he’s dressed, or that his clothes are sometimes slightly rumpled, or that his jackets always seem a skosh too small. Plus, I **HATE** his hair.

I love the white on Emma, and the dress itself is cute! I think this is a good example of wearing the right white/pink/beige/neutral for one’s skin tone.

  • jessicasac

She looks fabulous. I hate his outfit.

  • guest2visits

She looks very good in this dress; but I would have switched the boring shoes out for something else.
Agree with TLo that Andrew should lose the sweater; I like the jacket and pants.

  • Warrior89

Andrew Garfield – meh.  He looks like a high school boy trying to be…something.  I don’t know.  Something I don’t like.  She looks better.  I so am not buying they are a couple.

  • KathKo

Well there is a huge difference between the actuel temperature and the temperature one feels.
Especially if the weather is windy…
    OK, I tried.
Maybe he thought Berlin was in Groenland or something ?

  • MightyMarshal

That looks like an awfully heavy sweater. Also. Her shoes are pure prom. She needed color on her feet.

  • golspie

I’m sorry to be critical but he looks like a horrible pinhead douche.

  • ccm800

    Ugh! These two.
