Miu Miu Cameo Collection

Posted on June 04, 2012

Darlings, we’ve had a long day of Mad Men and MTV. Let’s talk jewelry.

Specifically, let’s talk about the Miu Miu cameo collection, modeled here by the ever-fab Mia Wasikowska. These pieces are so oddly cute that we can’t stop looking at them.

A gaudy, slightly modern take on a very old school design. We think they’re fun, but we realize something like this is only going to appeal to certain types. What do the Precious Unborn Fawns think?

The Miu Miu Cameo Collection: YEA or NAY?

Not a fan. They seem a little gaudy to me.

    • NinaBoo

At first I thought they were made from fondant.  Overdone fondant.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

How amazing would a cake decorated with fondant cameos be?!

        • Melvis Velour

That would be fabulicious!  These however, aren’t…

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

A resounding NAY.  It ends up looking cheap.  I understand the idea of updating the whole neoclassicism thing involving cameos and erzatz greco-romania, but this misses the mark entirely, mostly cause I think the cameos themselves are too cartoony, and huge, without being witty.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

And I’m sure it’s WAY too expensive to fill out the Whimsical Yet Refined section of one’s jewelry box.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yep. Its the sort of thing an anime character would wear. Not in a good way.

    • MarissaLG

I couldn’t have put it better myself!

  • http://twitter.com/carlatheviking Carla Pereira

I dig the bracelets…not sure about the necklaces…

  • http://profiles.google.com/christine.jain Christine Clark

Ridiculous in the best way possible. Yea as hell. Hell yea? I’m not sure. But these are a definite yes, either way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I agree, I know they’re not to everyone’s taste but the toy-like quality is something I’ve always loved about MiuMiu’s accesories (IF we leave the price range out of the ecuation, of course, and talk solely about design), they are cute, girly and fun as hell.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adj.blair Adriana Blair

Mia is the best looking thing about that picture. I’m not a fan of this gaudy style of jewelry.

  • amf0001

I like them,  one piece could really make an outfit…

  • kimmeister

YEA to Mia and possibly that very first necklace.  I’ll pass on everything else.

  • save_the_hobbit

I have very eclectic taste in jewelry…it either has to be full-out ghetto 5-inch earrings or gemstone-encrusted pieces that weigh more than a toddler. I don’t like these…at all. I bet my niece  would. She’s 5.

  • M_E_S

I’ve always had a thing for cameos, so I dig them, but I can see that they’re not to everyone’s taste.

But I still prefer my good old fashioned cameo necklace.

  • VicksieDo

    NAY, I like real cameos.

  • hughman

These are like what the Powerpuff girls would wear if they were in Downton Abbey. Which, oh yeah!

  • unbornfawn

I like the cameos. They are fun and modern. I don’t like them with the rhinestones, too busy and very tacky.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

    Miuccia went Full Etsy

    • Chaiaiai

      Or Regretsy….

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

oh god, no.  the horrifying things i learn from bitter kittens.  i am going to have to go pour bleach in my eyes and in my soul now.

    • Lina_bee

Too right, and unfortunate it is.

    • save_the_hobbit

How is etsy synonymous with suck? There are many extremely talented sellers on etsy who make amazing jewelry. They make each piece individually with extreme care, not this mass produced shit that costs probably thousands of dollars. I definitely enjoy a good costume jewelry, but that’s all this is. Support talented artists who are struggling, not brands that are worth millions.

    • giiiirrrr

Maybe they look better in person.  Maybe.

  • NC_Meg

I kind of like them. They’re fun. I have to know, though, how do you pronounce Miu Miu? I’ve been wondering for years.

    • Sara__B

Mew mew, according to most internet sources.

      • NC_Meg

        Thanks! That’s what I thought.

  • meowing

Nay for this aging kitten.  Cute for the babystar-ladystars, I s’pose.

  • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I kind of love them! I don’t usually like big, gaudy jewelry, but I enjoy the sense of whimsy here. Very cool looking!

  • Lina_bee

Tacky.  I do like the Artemis-seeming profile (with the ponytail) as a graphic, but not cameos done in these colors, sizes, scales, or rhinestones.

  • janedonuts

I like some of these pieces — and I would wear the hell out of those drop earrings — but the overall effect is a little too Betsey Johnson meets Etsy. (Now off to Etsy to find cheap knockoffs…)

    • MilaXX

Betsy’s in bankruptcy you, you could probably get her stuff at Etsy prices right now.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Good to know! I love Betsey jewelry…
I mean, sad for her, but…

  • allj

I don’t think I could pull any of that off, but it’s cute as hell. A YEA for me when deployed on someone braver!

  • jw_ny

    NAY!

  • http://roughmenstandready.wordpress.com/ Dejah Thoris

    3rd circle of Etsy Hell.

  • MilaXX

A somewhat tepid YEA. I think they are cute but other than the earrings I wouldn’t wear them.

  • vanjar

Even if, for example, the earrings were $695 cheaper, I still wouldn’t want to wear them. They look badly made. Nay.

  • EEKstl

YEA!  Classic and edgy at the same time, always a winning combo!

  • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

YEA to the non-fabric chokers. NAY to everything else. The bracelets and earrings look like they came in a princess dress up set.

  • gabbilevy

I like those middle necklaces–I think they’re fun. The rest, not to my taste.

  • formerlyAnon

Nay, with caveats. Or maybe Yea, with caveats. It looks like fun jewelry for the young. Nice fun jewelry. But it looks a little too much like really great quality “toy” plastic jewelry for the young women I’d imagine are the target.

  • Marie Watterlond

I think I’d wear the bracelet or the earrings.  But then, my wristwatch of choice is a rubbery-plastic blue Swatch with cartoony critters on it. I don’t think I own one piece of serious jewelry! These are adorable.

  • abfidy

Yea to everything that’s not a bracelet, but the biggest yea of all to Mia Wasikowska, who is doing some WERQ.

  • charlotte

They black/yellow ones look like the Queen meets Batman. Or maybe I need glasses.

  • Louise Bryan

An interesting modern take on the cameo, but I prefer my antique cameo that I inherited.

  • Belvane

For $30 on QVC or Etsy? Sure, very cute. For $700? It’s the Empress’s New Earrings.

  • Anathema_Device

Nay. I really like old fashioned, traditional cameos, though. I also like statement jewelry, but this collection just looks cheap to me.

  • Nonnah

Nay!  If this was a line by the Olsen twins for Walmart, I’d say “whatever”.  But Miu Miu can do better.

  • michelle shields

    no. too cheap looking

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GQIN74TNNQROY5JFPOWWBGJWEM andy

Love these, in moderation. Using one as a statement piece would be fab! YEA!

  • http://twitter.com/ladonnazc LaDonna Carpenter

Credit for a unique take on the classic.  I kind of like them!

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

    Nay.

  • scrappy1

Mia looks AMAZING.  And she’s pulling those pieces off, but only because her outfit and styling are very carefully done to complement the jewelry.   I’m not sure mere mortals could manage the perfect balance of retro/punk/tongue-in-cheek elegance to make it work.

But I’m thinking these might be the sort of thing that would work for Dita von Teese, Fan Bing-Bing, and maaaaaybe Kristen Stewart.

  • Sara__B

Nay. They look cheap, and I’m sure they’re not.

  • Miguel Molina

I find them ugly.  I like the necklace she is wearing on the picture but it’s mostly because of context. Most of these would look awful on an average day. The earrings are particularly offensive.

  • AlexisPayne

    Yea, I want the earrings

  • Snailstsichr

If these were at Target, I would totally snap them up to wear once, or at the most twice. I can see them being worn to a pool party or something like that. But $495.00 – $750.00. No way. They look like you need to move the decimal point a few places to the left.

  • Sophie Collier

YAY but ONLY for ladies age 15-26.  After that, no.

  • Amy Ellinger

Surprisingly Yay!  I could see them deployed very well with a simple tee, jeans and cute sandals.  BUT- It would be all about the pairings- easy to go too far and into “oh honey no” land.

  • NurseEllen

Yea, but they’re not for me.  I don’t even care for the traditional type cameos.

  • trisker

YES.  Great modern take on a traditional, centuries-old type.

  • JanieS

CHEAP and TACKY. They look like they’re made of plastic. I say NAY.

  • http://twitter.com/ThisIsNotEmber John Watson

love love love. Seriously, i would wear almost all of the pieces.

  • RedRaven617

    Nay

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

LOVE them! Probably very hard to pull off, but I look forward to seeing the ladystars try. And Mia looks fierce. YEA!

  • lrhoff

    Nay……

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234087433 Jen Freeman

I LOVE these.  Love the ‘cameo’, love the styling.  These would have to be worn as statement pieces obviously, but I want them all!

  • snarkykitten

Normally I hate cameos, but there’s something really fun about these. But they look cheap so…nay

  • altalinda

    Nay.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/toodleskitty79?feature=guide AWS

    Nay.  zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Casey Ellis

    Major NAY

  • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

I actually like the cameos. Hate the jewelry they’re attached to. Makes my head hurt looking at ‘em.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

    Sigh. Want.

  • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

    I like how they’re black.

  • argonauticos

    yeay!

  • NCDFan

    Nay

  • JMansm

BEYOND YEA. This is my favourite jewelry collection you have featured. I am a guy and I would honestly probably wear most of the pieces (except the earrings because my ears aren’t pierced) because they are strange enough that they don’t read like traditional women’s jewelry. OK so I probably couldn’t actually pull any of it off but I would make all of my female friends wear the whole collection if I could.

  • aristida_girl

I like ‘em, especially the chokers

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I like her purse, better than the jewelry.  Although the black and yellow bracelet is pretty enough.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CBJGITXG2PYJPHPGG7DUTNCQXA Erin

    Yay.  Loving those earrings.

  • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

The picture of Mia is great, but meh to the jewellery itself. Kind of gaudy.

  • SewingSiren

    I’m the type.
Love cameos in general. And gaudy doesn’t bother me either. I also like plastic. Too bad they’re not cheap, cause then it would be a match mad in heaven.

  • frannyprof

    Yay on the earrings.

  • Daenyx

    …Ew.

  • Judy_J

Yea to the nth degree! I love it!

  • Judy_J

Yea! I’m a big fan of gaudy jewelry.

  • PRFan

Oh, god, no.  NAY.  This is some of the ugliest jewelry I’ve ever seen.  For some reason, it reminds me of big, fat pop beads – plastic and tacky as all get out.

  • VioletFem

LOVE IT! And if I could afford it I would totally wear some of these pieces (the earrings and the white and blue bracelets). Not for everyone obviously, but on the right girl this jewelery would look awesome.

  • lesmaha

    nay.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

LOVE IT! Not that it matters, since I could never afford any of it. But if I could, I would TOTALLY buy some.

  • Monabel

    Oh, the horror.

  • CozyCat

I don’t like the combination of the faux cameos and the sparkly stones.  If they combined the cameos with more highly designed “plastic” (ala vintage bakelite) I would like it more.  But I think the bracelets in particular just don’t work.

  • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

Yay to the look, but I do agree that they look “cheap.” By this, I mean this is the sort of quirky jewelry I’d buy at Forever 21, but at Miu Miu prices, it’s just not gonna happen.

  • Kirsten Henry

    love it

  • http://twitter.com/grrliz Liz Fox

    I hate it, tbh.

  • Giustina Pileggi

love love loveee!!! they’re just wonderful in every way

  • http://twitter.com/Athenabast Athena Bast

I like the greek looking ones.

  • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

    I love it personally!

  • Pannyx

So completely over the top. I love them. I’m not sure I know anyone who could pull them off though.

  • annamiklo

Total yea, and I wish like crazy I could pull these off.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    Cartoonish and gaudy, NAY

  • pookiesmom

    Love!

  • boweryboy

    NAY!

The necklaces and bracelets would be quite lovely without the offensively cheap looking cameos.

Lately Prada has had a tendency of taking luxe and opulent pieces and making them look cheap and gaudy.

I’m usually a champion of Prada’s foward thinking ideas when it comes to fashion but lately she has been leaving me cold.

  • guest2visits

No.  These are garish.  Besides; who wants to wear women’s profiles ?  I never got it.
    Traditional cameos; both antique and the ancient historical collections are beautiful and interesting in their handcraft;
but I could never consider wearing them…. unless it was an actual carving of say, a beloved close relation.

  • Jane Dough

Hideous. Looks like something you’d find at the Dollar Store.

  • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

    YEA. Love cameos

  • understateddiva

    love.

  • portlandmermaid

I like the winged victory profiles, the ones that look like aunt Betty, not so much.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Nay – I just don’t care for such large, gaudy pieces.

  • Rebecca Jay

I thought I could not hate cameos any more than I already do.

    Turns out I can!

  • filmcricket

Is it me, or do they look like cookies?

    Tiny, intricately iced, sugar cookies.

  • Le_Sigh

I instantly thought of Manilla Luzon or Raja or even Pandora Boxx rocking these pieces.

  • ccm800

    Nay

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B3CIEK7XAS3YKAAKFJFMIIKC4I Nacogdoches

    Yay. Thank goodness for irony.

  • crash1212

YEA! I love each and every one of them and would accept any as a gift, should any Unborn Fawn want to send one my way. It’s also making me want to dig out the cameo my Granny gave me and paint it. LOVE. WANT.

  • sleepycat

If I could afford the first necklace and had the wardrobe to match I would totally wear it. YAY! They are a bold and graphic statement pieces, which is totally my style. Now to find a paint color to match the backdrop and a chic NY condo to put it in.

  • sleepycat

If I could afford the first necklace and had the wardrobe to match I would totally wear it. YAY! They are a bold and graphic statement pieces, which is totally my style. Now to find a paint color to match the backdrop and a chic NY condo to put it in.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

nay nay nay.  big, clunky, and homely.

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

YEA, YEA, a million times YEA! I love the blue-backed earrings particularly.

  • LinXGUA

No. If they are going to push to a ‘delicate’ direction, it needs to be enphasized. It’s inbetween. It’s not enough classy to me, nor bold enough: it’s mediocre (says the tasteless commenter.)
    SORRY, but Nay.

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I squealed when I saw them (but having said that, they do look like something I would buy for ten bucks on a flee market, rather than the hundred dollar jewelry it probably is)

  • Corsetmaker

Does anyone remember those plastic brooches you used to get as a free gift stuck on teen magazines in the 80s? Over here it was Blue Jeans,Jackie etc. They usually came as several flat plastic sections that you snapped together. That’s what these remind me off.

  • Maggie_Mae

I love them!  Where are the affordable knockoffs?

To me, they have a Roaring 20′s look.  We’ll probably be seeing more of that stuff as homage to Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby.  His productions aren’t noted for their subtlety & minimalism.  But I love them, too!

  • jjfg

    Looks like chocolate!

Not even remotely to my taste (the jewelry, not chocolate), but I can see the appeal.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I wouldn’t wear them, but I think they are quite fun. A luke-warm yea.

  • fursa_saida

I want these with an ungodly sickness.

  • Tafadhali

    I want these so badly.

I will say I like the earrings best, because I think such bold pieces do better with slightly more delicate settings — if I’m wearing a giant pink cameo bracelet, I don’t need it to have a black velvet band — but overall I think these are fun and super cute.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/K3O2QNXDJIU3AJINAGNJRYWDZ4 mrspotts66

    nay.  hideous.

  • Lisa Dugan

They’re really quite beautiful but just too big for my taste.  I have a delicate cameo set from my grandmother that I adore and it more my speed.  But I love the new modern take.

  • bluefish

Nay — I wouldn’t be caught wearing a cameo ever — and especially not these.  But Mia looks lovely.  She can take heavier make-up, especially around the eyes, and I wish she would!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Ick! How much do you have to pay for that crap. Reminds me of Woolworths.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    Yea.  I like them.

  • http://twitter.com/locallizzy local lizzy

i’m surprising myself with a yea. i think these cameos would be a smash with an otherwise simple outfit (which the old ones cannot do), and the cameos themselves exude a bit more badass-ness; maybe its the streak of color going through. The forward leaning figure is the strongest example. A good re-invention of a demure classic.

  • SheWhoMustBeObeyed

Yay. They are gaudy as hell, but sometimes more is more.

  • Aurumgirl

I think these would look better as licorice candies.

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

Yay.  it’s about time somone rescued cameos from grandma’s jewlery box

  • SapphoPoet

    I love cameos. But I don’t care for these–too gaudy and plastic-y.

  • Lilithcat

    They look cheap.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I do like idea behind them, but like another PUF said, they’re too expensive for that cheap look. Nay.

  • MissAnnieRN

I am not a fan of the earrings, but I can see one of the bracelets being fun. I like color and these are kind of whimsical to me. I din’t often like Miu Miu or Prada stuff but I would wear some if these with jeans.

  • mjude

i would never wear them but i think they are very IN

  • ErinnF

    The inner child says yea.

  • sweetlilvoice

I love them. Hope there are some cute and cheap knockoffs!

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I like the design of the cameos themselves, I just think they’re too big and gaudy.

  • TieDye64

It’s a NAY for me. Far too gaudy for my taste, but I like the shot of Mia.

  • fashionzombie

I am that certain type these appeal to. Love them!

  • jennifervney

LOVE them and that picture of Mia!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

  • judybrowni

Nope, except possibly the blue earrings.

But even those are Forever 21.

  • http://twitter.com/glamspoon glam.spoon

I love it. like fancy plastic candy.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CQPXLNCBM5CZSHZZXJDHPVFS7E Buffy

I collect cameos and I think these are fun!

  • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

I love it but then again I can be kind of tacky.

  • sweet_potato

Too distracting.  I can’t see the pieces for trying to make out what’s going on in the cameo.

  • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

oh, yea and yay!  i really like the new take on cameos.

  • BrightsideSusan

    NO!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

    Ugh!  I can’t with these…

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

    LUHV.

I hope Ye Helmeted One is supposed to be Athena.

  • Anonymoth

Love them. Big YEA. But I’ve got a thing for cameos. Stick one in front of me and I’ll probably love it. I realize it isn’t necessarily to everyone’s taste, though.

  • http://stitchingincircles.etsy.com Tina

YAYYYY! Love ‘em. Half Victorian princess, half Wonder Woman.

  • CrazyAuntie

A huge YEA!!  They’re really fun.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QZ6NAON37ZMC2IIA33COHYLXYA Josie

    Love the earrings.

  • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

YAY, I love these. They’re fun and a great update to a traditional piece of jewelry. I’d get em if I could and wear them to work.

  • andrea berman

with the right clothes, i think they would be really cute and fun.

  • alana hayes

i would so buy one of these if it came as a ring it would be PERF! but since they don’t I’m thinking about buying the bright pinkTarina Tarantino candy cameo ring.  It’s a shame really because these cameo’s are so different and I love cameos! But with the rhinestones and the chunky bracelets are just YUCK! They’d be the most awesome statement piece if they came as rings chunky they could really make an outfit pop and I’d be all over them in like 2 seconds!
