Michelle Williams in Jason Wu

Posted on June 22, 2012

Some of the ladystars have been sporting some decidedly un-summer-like ensembles lately, to our complete befuddlement. So when these pics of Michelle showed up…

Michelle Williams at the CBS This Morning studio in NYC in a Jason Wu dress.

Jason Wu Resort 2013 Collection [Modified Version]

We shrieked “PRINT IT!” like an editor in an old-time newspaper drama. Sometimes we say things like, “Get me rewrite, baby! And step on it!”

Look, YOU spend all day, every day, working with your spouse and only your spouse. You’d go a little nuts too. You’re all lucky we haven’t snapped and started posting bomb-making instructions.

Anyway (they continued, eschewing a segue), this is full-on summer and that’s just what we needed to see to start the day. That dress is adorable and looks great on her, without looking twee (for once). And we FLOVE those shoes, but they must STANK in hot weather.

Dress says June, shoes say January…..

    • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

I was just thinking this. Why not match it with the kind of strappy sandals you can only wear in the summer? No idea what she was thinking.

      • Spicytomato1

Yes, the shoes that the model is wearing are perfect. Maybe this was a quick fix for missing a pedicure appointment.

      • http://6things.blogspot.com par3182

Not sandals -  the sidewalks in New York are veritable TOILETS in the summertime!

        • lovelyivy

My toe accidentally touched the ground once. After that I saw the wisdom in the platform shoe.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

My cardinal rule for dealing with whatever the sidewalks of NYC present me with:  If it hasn’t rained, but there’s a puddle in front of you, DON’T STEP IN IT!

          • http://twitter.com/moodring54 Rachel

As a close encounter with a dead mouse once taught me, even if it has rained: AVOID.

    • ballerinawithagun

You are so right. The shoes would look so cute with tights in January.

    • AlinaValero

yes! i love the shoes but not with this dress and not in this season =

    • AudreysMom

my love for Michelle tells me that the shoes are comfortable and she’s just wearing them for the trip to the studio, then she’s changing into something more fashionable and fitting to the season, though probably more painful.

    • Judih1

I agree. What was she thinking with those clunky, dark shoes?

  • MilaXX

    cute!

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I too, love the dress, and love it on her. The shoes do look a bit heavy for it, though.  Great shoes, just not quite right with this dress.
As a side note, you guys must have saintlike patience to work together all day, every day.  My employers are also long term partners who work together all day long, how mayhem does not occur amazes me. BRAVO gents!

  • antheapena

love the whole thing, sure you’re right about the shoes but I really like them, more for autumn? She is so fab

  • http://www.facebook.com/ChereeWinston Cheree Winston

I like the white panels like on the model better but love the dress regardless :)

    • lovelyivy

Agreed. The increased white space and the belt were much better for the dress. This version is still really cute and summery, just less interesting.

    • ballerinawithagun

I agree, cute print but a little too much of it.

    • JimMcC

I actually like it even better without the panels. Removing them make this a little more standard, but in a way I find really lovely. She’s just so…pretty.

    • MoHub

ITA. The white panels give the dress an edge that’s missing when the print is over the whole dress. Still, it’s nice to see a summery print.

      But those shoes in June?

    • SojournerYouth

Totally.  Also, the white made the really flattering criss-cross effect of the neckline and bodice more clear–you can barely see it on the all-print version, though I do really like the dress on Michelle (I’m not sure too many other ladystars could pull it off quite as well, while it suits her to a T).  I agree with whomever said that the white made the dress more edgy and modern.  I like her shoes as they are cute as hell, but if she wasn’t going to wear sandals (I hear you about pee-filled summer streets!), she could have at least gotten those shoes in white for a more summery effect.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I agree. Both versions of the dress are adorable, but I like the pattern broken up a bit.

  • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

I think I’m good with the shoes, even with them being sort of out of season.  She looks great.

  • CassandraMortmain

Love this dress.  I also really like the version the model is wearing.  Michelle looks very summer-appropriate and cute.  The shoes are all kinds of wrong and do a lot to kill the look.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

The shoes are pretty incongruous. Kind of ruins it for me. But I love the dresss! (though I like the original better)

    • carolynmo

Yeah! That dress demands a cute sandal!

  • http://twitter.com/Elizabethann1 Elizabeth Denton

I usually don’t like a head-to-toe runway/presentation look, but the Jason Wu shoes would have looked awesome here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1047749944 Katherine Pavlica

I love her modified dress better than the cut out original.  Super cute!

  • Lilithcat

That dress is cute, though I prefer the original version.  And it needs some little strappy sandals, not clunky black clodhoppers.

  • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

Love the dress, hate the shoes with it though. Actually, I just hate the shoes. With anything.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She could’ve gone with summery shoes here, but I REALLY love the dress, and it fits her like a glove.

  • bellafigura1

I LOVE the shoes, but so so so not with that dress at this time of year!  What. Is. Up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=558631967 Ivona Foster

Is it just me or has she been look decidedly less twee lately?

    • Spicytomato1

Mmm, I don’t know. I’d say this dress is definitely on the twee spectrum.

      • formerlyAnon

But on the more grown up end, no?

  • Funkykatt

I am on the fence about the dress. I feel if the dress were a bit longer, and she was wearing gloves and a carrying a cigarette holder, she’d look like she was trying to impersonate Phyillis Diller,  but not very well. She’d need the teased hair to complete it.

  • vanjar

That is a very nice dress. I like it a lot better than those dresses with the big fruit on it, butt he shoes are too clunky for my taste.

Look, YOU spend all day, every day, working with your spouse and only your spouse.
What, it’s really only the two of you?! I thought you had a team like Rachel Zoe. You two need at least one intern, who will fetch you coffee and tortes filled with warm rhubarb compote.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Can it be me?!!!!!!  I’ll do it!!!! (Raising hand)

      • vanjar

First of all, you answer the phone.
The phone must be answered every single time it rings.
Calls roll to voice mail, and they get very upset.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I have Patrick on 2 for you.

          • vanjar

Are you sure, because your loved ones will get e-mails from you at your office at 2:00 a.m.
Your pay is terrible and you don’t get to write anything.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yeah, but at the end of a year, I’ll be able to get a great blog job anywhere.

          • formerlyAnon

             ”great blog job”

            bwahahaha!

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Oh, well, I just couldn’t help myself.

          • vanjar

Absolutely! In the mean time you’re going to get eggs for them, pick up the Polaroids from the lingerie shoot and have the brakes checked on their car.
You also get to go with them to Paris for Fashion Week in the fall. You get to wear couture. You go to all the shows and all the parties and you meet all the designers. It’s divine.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I am so IN for this. Of course nothing short of major surgery is going to fit this short, barrel chested dude into couture, but it’s a great thought. I can do all kinda of expensive accessories, though.

          • vanjar

You can always try that new diet. I hear it’s very effective. You just don’t eat anything and then when you feel like you’re about to faint, you eat a cube of cheese. *whispers* I’ve been told it worked wonders for Herr Karl.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I would still have to deal with my crazy big ribcage. And the fact that I’m 5’4″.

          • vanjar

That’s why bespoke was invented. Just make a pit stop in London and visit one of the tailors on Savill Row. You can pick out fabrics that will look good with all the free designer stuff you get in Paris. ;)

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

My, but I do like how you think.

          • vanjar

            Thank you!
You know all these clothes from Paris you going to have and you probably don’t have anyplace to wear them? …..So, I was wondering if I could take them off your hands?

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

            Of course, sharing is caring!

          • Prudence1990

I could use a nice little BJ right about now ;)

        • SapphoPoet

          “Can you spell ‘Gabbana’?

    • formerlyAnon

An intern is a good idea. That way, during stressful times, you can unite in dissatisfaction with the intern’s understanding, work ethic and performance. Very bonding.

  • twocee

Love the dress, like the shades, like the fact that she’s not looking twee (except the hair, which is just going to look twee no matter what).

I’d love to own those shoes and wear them in, say, October.  Not July, when it’s the temperature of fusion outside.

  • nannypoo

I find her annoying at best, so I hate to admit that she looks really cute here. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I don’t like her – the word that comes to mind for her is “cute”, which seems like a descriptor for a child rather than an adult. But anyway, the shoes look really stupid with the dress.

  • MissAnnieRN

Not loving this. It looks dated. Like 70′s kitchen appliance colors. And also more appropriate for someone 15 years older. I might like it on Shelly O.

    • Spicytomato1

“ Like 70′s kitchen appliance colors.” Yes. But I actually like that about it.

      • formerlyAnon

These particular colors. My mother’s appliances, not so much.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

Yuck on the shoes with this outfit, way too heavy.

  • Lilak

Dress OK (though I prefer the extra white in the model’s version) … But them’s some anti-summer F/W shoes, and they’re bringin me down.

  • Cathy S

Love the dress, but she needs sandals. She looks great though.

  • RzYoung

I flove ‘flove’ – how have I never heard/thought of that before!!

It’s like Autumn in the UK :( I’m wearing tights and boots

  • Spicytomato1

Yes! Patting myself on the back for identifying this as part of the collection TLo showcased recently. I loved this then and I have to say it’s perfect for her. I wish she’d worn the shoes on the model, though.

  • StelledelMare

Agreed. Love the dress on her and love the shoes but she should’ve saved them for the fall

  • Jessi03

She looks lovely!  I want that dress!

  • kikisayshi

Cute, but I love the model’s version more. Hate the shoes.

  • Jangle57

ditto – love the dress, hate the shoes with it (though they would look great with a pair of slacks)

  • pugluv

I like the model’s version better with the solid white accents as opposed to the total floral of Michelle.  She looks very chic, summery and cute the only other improvement she could make is to ditch the shoes and wear cute pair of sandals.

  • quiltrx

For once, not twee.  Cute dress.  I’m with you on the shoes.

  • bookish

I LOVE that dress. It’s like the expensive, green version of the orange floral dress I’m wearing right now.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

I wish they’d kept the white shoulder. Otherwise, cute!

  • Diane Lynch

It’s a cute dress, but the white panels as shown on the model would have made it special. The shoes look like secretarial loafers and are definitely out of season; there are tons of great summer sandals that would have looked super with this. But overall, it’s a win!

  • Scarlet39

Love it (although I think I like it with the white accents better).  While not my favorite, the shoes are ok, but I think a sandal would have been nicer.

  • SapphoPoet

Ok, I was with her until I hit the ugly, heavy, black shoes. What has happened to all the pretty summer sandals?

Edited to add: I went back and looked at the model version, which I’ve decided I like better. The white panels and the belt really give it a bit of an edge. I like the model’s purse, too. Michelle’s version looks a little standard, although I still like it.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/rmccarthyjames RMJ12345

I like the shoes! They’re a contrast, and they ground this very twee dress in maturity. Overall a very cute look. LOVE those sunglasses.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

This entry makes me smile, both the dress and your writing. :)

  • j_anson

Cute! TLo, you guys are obsessed with this shoe-stank issue. There are solutions for the problem, y’know!

  • Lisa Dugan

Dress is adorable.  Shoes are cute too but confusing for this time of year.

  • BazoDee

I do like the lines on the original dress better for some interest and edge that MW isn’t normally known for. Still a cute look -but the shoes weigh it down considerably.

  • Lina_bee

That dress suits her like it was custom made for her alone and not a resort collection. Fabulous!

  • TheLaurenJean

This isn’t Twee? What a world we’ve come to live in…

  • formerlyAnon

“eschewing a segue” [imagine a bunch of heart & exclamation point emoticons, here]

Forget fashion. I’m in a writing-intensive career – term used loosely – phase right now and you two are my HEROES for that phrase! I may have to post it on the wall to amuse myself.

No wonder people think I’m odd.

Ahem. Back to your post. Dress is great, shoes nice but a tad heavy, or a tad black or something, for me. But that’s a quibble.

And I can’t imagine working full time with a spouse, but maybe that’s why I’m divorced and you two are not? Kudos, in any case.

  • sk8tfan

    Me want dress

  • PinkLemon

that dress is pretty dull for being Wu….it looks like Talbots to me. Meh.

  • SophieCollier

It’s cute.  I like the runway version better, and the shoes look a bit Autumny to me, but it’s classy and not terribly twee.

  • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

I love this dress – this is exactly the sort of thing I wear to work during the summer, when it gets pretty damn hot here in LA.  I don’t, however, usually wear closed-toed shoes (especially ones as heavy as these) with my summer dresses.  Someone get this girl some sleek wedge sandals!

  • Joyce VG

    FLOVE=?  Freaking love?

  • anotherEloise

I think Ms. Williams may have eschewed the white panels because her fair skin wouldn’t give them enough contrast.   I’m a paleskin myself, and can’t wear white for that very reason.

  • out for a walk

I love everything about this! Even the shoes with the dress – though I will concede that if she took off her sunglasses the shoes might be unbalancingly black and heavy. But as is? WERQITY WERQ WERQ.

  • Qitkat

I think she ought to have gone with the original white panels. That’s what makes it a designer dress in the first place. Here it’s just JCP or Kohls (both of which I shop at).

PS. Not the greatest shoes for this outfit, but I understand the need to get the toes in a rounded tip every once in a while (ie. normal).

  • http://twitter.com/riosramblings Michael Rios

Best she’s ever looked in my opinion.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The dress is just right for a hot summer day-charming!

  • TieDye64

She looks very chic, but I do like the original a little better. I like how the white panels break up the print. It’s still fab, though. The shoes are nice, but I say they belong with a different (fall) outfit.

  • unbornfawn

  • EEKstl

Those shoes were NOT the right choice for a perfect summer dress like this, much as I like them.  I nitpick because I love.

  • TheOriginalLulu

That dress is so perfect for her it’s not even funny.
She does the Mia Farrow thing really well.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

    Love the frock.

I demand instructions for a FASHION bomb pronto!

  • Judy_J

LOVE IT!  I want that dress in my closet.  Her shoes are cute, too, but I’d wear something a bit lighter….don’t want stanky shoes!

  • Allison Woods

    Love that dress!

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

    I covet that dress.

  • jessicasac

Just love this dress, especially on her. Hate the shoes and wish she was wearing a belt. Needs a belt.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RHLSUVX3NCPB4OSS5BM7GZIXUE P. Capet

    yes!

  • Ksagun13

Adorable — LOVE the dress, love the shape and the print.  I agree, the shoes are cute but way too heavy for the outfit — what happened to a nice strappy sandal?

  • Patricia Gillett

Dress is darling but the shoes are too clunky. Did we not have time for a pedi? That dress is crying out for something strappy, not Pilgrim.

  • IAmJ

You guys are a joy to read.

  • guest2visits

Though I like the basic style of the dress; even the flowers are nice, it still looks alittle bit like a couch/upolstery print to me.
It looks vintage but more frumpy than chic. Maybe if the print were scaled back and random; the dress would feel more on trend.
I like the shoes ( not with this dress); and I’m tired of the specs and the haircut. Jeez I’m picky. She probably looked great.

    • roadtrip1000

I was reading through all these comments to see if anyone felt the same way I do about the specs and the hair! IMHO, both the specs and the shoes look too dark and heavy, and I wish she would grow her twee hair out a bit. Right now she looks like a small child (male or female) who is playing dress-up with her mother’s sunglasses and shoes. However I do like the dress.

  • http://profiles.google.com/rosatcollege Ros Clarke

It is cute, but I like the runway version more than Michelle’s modified one.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

so nice to see her looking like a woman for a change, instead of a little girl.

  • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

Could have been a WERQ! if not for the wintry shoe choice.

  • ccm800

Aw I dont care for the changes from the runway look – it is cute though. Shoes are a hell no

  • mila_8

Playing with photoshop, that’s how bad I want to see her wearing the modified version with white blocking.
