Michael Kors Resort 2013 Collection

Posted on June 07, 2012

The Duchess’s theme for this collection was “opulent minimalism,” said to be inspired by his recent trip to Turkey, which TOTALLY sounds like Michael Kors. Nobody does Resort like him. You can just see the fabulous jet-setter, hopping from place to place with an entourage carrying her luggage and her dog, while she makes long strides across countless tarmacs while sporting fabulous sunglasses. You know that’s what he saw when this collection was coming together. As always, he offers up a range of beautiful, saturated colors and rich textures. Love the turquoise color and the Ikat motifs, as well as that sassy B&W windowpane plaid. We’d love to see the blue and turquoise gowns in the last row on the red carpet some day.

The model’s legs in the blue toga/bathing suit? Tha fuck?

    • alyce1213

I know. The kneecaps are as big or bigger than all other parts of the leg.
      Skinny gross.

      • Any one will look better in this collection than the models....CBCJobGetPosition.notlong.com

        • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

everyone plz flag the sam hell out of the spammer.  do it for my ocd!

    • LesYeuxHiboux

That is an exceptionally unflattering garment.

    • charlotte

       It looks like she’s Barbie!

    • MoHub

Regular runway models should not be allowed to show bathing suits. That’s why G-d made Victoria’s secret models.

      • anotherEloise

        God?   Or plastic surgeons?

        • MoHub

I was talking strictly in terms of the old-school VS models, like Frederique vander Wahl, and Tyra Banks, who had a little more meat on their bones and did more to fill out bathing suits and lingerie without looking as if their thighbones would snap if they took a single step.

Unfortunately, even VS has gone to the shapeless, bony types in the last few years.

          • girliecue

Frederique! For years she was my most favorite model and epitome of female beauty. And she was smart, to boot.

      • rawrgrowlrawr

No, God made Victoria’s Secret models to make women feel insecure and inferior.

    • 3rdsister

       No kidding, right??

I think the theme of this photoshoot was “Any one will look better in this collection than the models.”

    • I think that’s where it was supposed to say “insert vagina here” at the model factory. Everyone makes mistakes, you guys

    • Cleis

As soon as I saw that I gasped…what happened to Michael Kors who loves women’s bodies?  Ugh.  Ugly article of clothing and ridiculous photoshopped photograph imho.

    • I think it needs another 3 inches on the hem and then maybe, just maybe, she’ll look human.

  • aochs05

That super short blue number in row 6… a shirt that is simply styled as pant-less? A swimsuit of some sort? Surely it’s not a dress…

    • Lilithcat

      Bathing suit.

    • kimmeister

But I bet the clutch threw you off, right?  I was unsure myself, until I saw that all of the bathing suits were paired with clutches.

    • fursa_saida

I don’t care WHAT it is, it’s doing crazy things to her proportions.

  • anotherEloise

The bow-legged paper dolls don’t do much for these clothes.   (Ape arms don’t help either – row 4 center, I’m talking to you. . .)

  • Lina_bee

There are some very striking pieces here and some great stuff if you can wear gold without looking jaundiced.

  • formerlyAnon

I rarely ever dislike the cut of his clothing, but the shiny fabrics are not wowing me. Also, the black & teal ikat-patterned dress is pinging decades-old upholstery in my head, which makes it hard to be objective. (Objective? As if!)

And the red two-piece swimsuit is odd. Well, any “swim” suit with gilt chain shoulder straps is odd, but it seems intended for sale to those of less-than-perfect figure, and yet I doubt that it will flatter anyone much.

But as always, if I had the money for this level of clothing, I’d find it easy to leave a chunk of it with MK every year. I’m just that unexciting.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

That red two-piece is just awkward looking. I’m trying to imagine any woman wearing that, and failing.
Aside from that, MK knows his girl, or woman, and where she’s going.

    • MissAnnieRN

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but ikat always looks like decades old upholstery to me. It is very on trend right now, but I just can’t.

  • Judy_J

Oh, Duchess….you’ve done it again! Credit where credit is due….this is a lovely collection.  It’s all chic and very wearable.

  • girliecue

God I’m such a sucker for windowpane plaid! Love the color choices too. God bless the Duchess for his beautiful (for the most part) AND wearable clothes.

  • Someone already has worn one of the gowns on the red carpet. Eric Heatherton at the CFDA Awards.

  • PeaceBang

    That’ll do, Duchess. That’ll do.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I can see Gwen Stefani in those gold pants. Y’know, goin’ to the grocery store or something on a low-key day.

This direction is a lot more interesting to me than his Safari stuff. Love the blues and greens, and the plaid.

    • vanjar

Seeing those gold pants, all I can think of is “You can’t touch this, Hammertime”.

      • I have a bruised rib from a kayaking accident, and IT HURTS TO LAUGH. Please stop! 🙂

  • alyce1213

I don’t really like anything at all here, there’s nothing really special in the whole collection.  I thoroughly dislike much of it.
Too much tacky gold, too many uglies.
    Bad Duchess.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I would have to agree with you.  Other than a couple of the gowns, there isn’t one piece I like, and I usually love MK’s stuff.  Disappointing!

    • Carleenml

I was thinking I just must not be jetsetter material. I think it’s all fugly as hell.

    • Carleenml

I was thinking I just must not be jetsetter material. I think it’s all fugly as hell.

  • The graph paper checked pieces are the most striking, and well cut pieces in the collection. A number of the gowns, in terms of structure, are very “been there, done that”. The beigey gold lace looks aging in all but the full length dress. I will give the Duchess this though, he knows his way around designing something cohesive, with a clear, strong, focus.

    • Nelliebelle1197

I just think it all looks…. matronly… mother of the bride….

  • carolynmo

As always, I love his clothes.  But please, designers, may we have something besides these police line-up poses? Anything! it looks like these models don’t love the clothes, and maybe they don’t, but at least when they’re walking a runway, they can look fierce.

    • Beardslee

I’m with you!  These girls just stand there like lumps and don’t sell the clothes at all.

  • RoxieRider

The fit is strangely off on many of these models–like they forgot their suitcases and borrowed them all from their slightly-less-modelesque best friends. It’s not doing the clothes justice, I think.

That said, I love the gold ikat, the ikat gown, and the gold sandals. It’s a really nice collection.

  • oohsparkley!

The red bathing suit is horrendous, so is the white.  Unflattering shots of too skinny legs.  I started off thinking blah, blah, and unoriginal, then hit the fugly and ended up liking the last few gowns.

  • yulaffin

I pretty much don’t like anything except the gold skirt/sweater combo in the third row of pics and the gowns.  Everything else – meh.

  • SewingSiren

I love the insanely high waisted two piece. The window pane check coats kimono sleeve coats remind me of something Christobal Balenciagaia did.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

      ibid re: the insanely waisted.

      • SewingSiren

        Here’s http://www.vogue.it/en/encyclo/people/v/diana-vreeland the Balenciaga.

  • AuntieAnonny

The black/white designs are so gorgeous, and it creates this sort of.. optical illusion.

Also: Metallics! Blue snakeskin AND fur!

All of the coats are amazing.

  • giiiirrrr

Safe, well-made, a little boring.  Kors!

  • dickylarue

I’m not sure where this resort is, but I imagine it’s a dreary place with no sun, a broken pool and only vermouth behind the bar. In the late afternoon the entertainment is all the guests get together to see who can suck their cheeks in the furthest while a jar of olives is scattered on the floor for the hungry.

To put it bluntly, I don’t want to know “this girl”.

    • Qitkat

    • SewingSiren

OMG! I’ve been there! It’s Winnie , Texas. They have a kidney shaped pool, but it’s dry. And worst of all the Air Conditioning is bro-ken.

    • Celandine1

Sadly this sounds like a real hotel in Turkey where dolphins were rescued last month from a small dirty hotel pool. The hotel charged tourists to swim with them. Apparently it’s not a rare occurrence in “resorts” along the Mediterranean sea, I have seen similar articles over the years about “resorts” in Egypt and Bulgaria. And you would probably contract a fatal disease or at least a nasty parasite from getting into the brackish water.

    • MissAnnieRN

  • NCDFan

Some nice stuff, some tacky stuff, some stuff I can’t imagine wearing. The usual.

  • scrappy1

The black tunic with the gold braid, middle of the second row?  Is an embarrassingly literal rip-off of a garment you can buy for $10 at any Egyptian marketplace.

  • BobStPaul

While many of these pieces are quite nice, there’s something weirdly off-putting about a number of them.  This looks pretty pallid in comparison to the Donna Karan resort collection shown yesterday.

  • Qitkat

Take a shower, slick all your hair back, assume the position.

What? It’s about the clothes? I’m distracted. Back later./frown/

  • Yeah, nothing says “resort” like a leather dress.

    • jennifervney

Right? There are too many of those hot looking jackets for this to register as a resort collection. I’m disappointed in the Duchess.

  • I don’t care for all the gold, but I do love the colors and the windowpane plaid.  That turquoisey-teal snakeskin coat is sharp as hell.

  • I’m not really loving any of this. Maybe it’s the styling?

  • MilaXX

I like everything but that turquoise pants suit. That cut of pant isn’t going to work on anyone other than Tilda.

  • Scarlet39

The awkward pose of the models ruins this for me.  The models like as if they’re standing up against a wall awaiting execution.

  • JMansm

    Yes Duchess, Yes.

  • Beautiful! I’ll take one of each, please.

  • Anathema_Device

The first row of looks are a little saggy-baggy-sad, but the rest is pretty great. Diane Kruger needs to get her mitts on that last dress (the bronze metallic one). I like the windowpane pieces. They make a great impact together, but in a nonrunway situation, they will pair with other things beautifully.

  • I can picture his mother wearing most of this…. is that who it was designed for?

    • calimon

Yes, and the proportions are bringing up images of the Olsen twins.

  • Flooby

Even though the pictures look straight on I think the camera was actually looking down on the models- nothing else explains the weird and unflattering perspective/ ape arms, stumpification.

    • j_anson

YES. The proportions on all of them are so WEIRD. I can’t even decide what I think about the clothes because whatever it is – the camera angle, the proportions of the clothes, or the models themselves – just makes everything look OFF.

  • TieDye64

The b&w windowpane, the black tunic, the turquoise ikat inspired print and the turquoise in general. Those I like. The gold metallics, not so much.

  • turtleemily

They way it looks like none of these were even attempted to fit the models better, it looks like little girls playing dress up in their mom’s clothes.

Are the blue and red pieces supposed to be belted bathing suits or did they forget pants?

  • jmorino08

Beautiful!! But that red bathing suit will work on exactly no one who isn’t shaped like that model!!

  • the green/black print gown. I want it SO much.

  • aristida_girl

I love it all, especially the touches of gold and the SHOES! MK is consistently one of my most favorite designers, and I like that many of his pieces work well for the average woman…

  • LinXGUA

Kors, you too? Good Lord, they all have the proportion of a troll.
I like the look with the black shirt and the golden shorts. It’s cute.
BUT they’re freaking me out. 1890’s circus freak show parade.

  • another_laura

Wow, I had to scroll down quickly over a lot of these comments because there were a lot of snide remarks about the women’s bodies in there.  This hurts me, kittens!

I think there are some beautiful looks in here.  I’m not loving the electric blue things or those sandals with all that bulk around the ankles.  but it’s a collection that tells a pretty fab story, for sure.

  • understateddiva

Cut the boatneck black and turquoise maxi off at the knee, and send it to me.  The last dress doesn’t fit, btw- it looks like a lift from Givenchy.

  • The turquoise and black ikat gown needs to be in my closet now. Love it! Actually, that whole turquoise row can came along with it.

  • MK03

That’s a lotta fug in one collection.

  • The models might as well have been men.  I’m all for classic American sportswear, but this is downright asexual.

  • sleepycat

for a second i doubted the Duchess’ ability to translate Turkish design into a minimal collection, but he did it fairly well. Love the turquoise row.

  • I like the red with gold print. That’s about it. This is one weirdly cold resort, with all the long sleeves.

  • Markatha

    Dowdy & ugly, yuck.

  • I love all the black and white patterned pieces. The rest aren’t to my taste, but I can appreciate their gorgeousness. I wish I was Kors’ target customer 🙁

  • filmcricket

Wow, there’s really nothing new under the sun, is there?

    • holdmewhileimnaked

ah, new has never been MK’s thing. even less, maybe, than it’s someone like, say, marc jacobs’.
MK’s thing is lush & wearable, i would think–or at least it has been ever since i’ve seen his stuff, a decade or so ago. some of this is lush & some of it is wearable. i dont see a whole lotta ottoman empire, i do kinda sorta like the gold luxe stuff. couldnt wear it, though–in fact, i think is one of his collections that’s actually less good on everybody, rather than more. surprising. i usually really like his collections–not for inspiration, mind, for that i would go to say, christopher kane or even matthew williamson or, you know, gareth pugh or on & on, one of a whole big handful of asian designers– but to see the way he works his shapes & fabric. & none of this is really doing it for me this time.& i hate teal. just across the board.

  • I do like some of it, but are the pictures supposed to look bad? In many pictures the model is too skinny and the proportions just look off. Is the idea just to look at the clothes only? The gold shift dress looks like my daughter made it in sewing class (in the picture)

  • Well Dutchess, one can obviously see the inspiration that Mondo gave you! Some odd shapes in the collection that I wouldn’t encourage my worst enemy to wear!

  • Where did this little boy in the black sports jacket and disco pants come from? Just throw a hair-net on him and he’s ready for Chulo Disco skating!

  • The green top and matching pants – Units circa 1982?

  • nancylee61

The turquise print gown is lovely, as is the turq coat in the same row. Very cool. Love the black and white!! But what the heck is that blue, gold-belted monstrosity that cannot decide if it is a bathing suit or a dress? Some very bizarre clothes in here.

  • I’ve seen those gowns on the red carpet 500 times. What are y’all seeing that I’m not?

  • The gold lame pants are scary as is the midriff-baring top and shorts with a coat (???).  If baby onesies came in halter tops, that’s the white bathing suit.  The red suit is baffling, is that a two piece or a one-piece with a sheer insert?  Because if it’s a two-piece there’s no way that bottom is going to stay up on a normal human being that moves and breathes.  But the gowns are beautiful and the windowpane plaid is nice if it was worn as separates with some other color.

  • I have to say… I hate that black and white box pattern. The rest is okay, but not my bag.

  • It’s a bit dark for spring/summer in my opinion. I don’t love any of it.

  • mjude

you gotta give it up for the duchess.

  • lordandtaylor

Dowdy is the only word that comes to mind for this collection.  Remember Braniff Airlines during the 60’s? Many of the outfit look “inspired” by the stewardess’ uniforms. Plus more dressed that pool on the floor. Buy one and get to be good friends with your dry cleaner.

  • PeggyOC

That’s a lot of boring and derivative.  Nothing new or interesting here.  Some stuff looks workmanlike and wearable, but the majority is dull and ugly trying to hide under some rich fabrics.

  • Lexie

Lovelovelove. Great prints, gorgeous colors, beautiful silhouettes.

  • Ok, I dont’ need the gold shorts or any of the gowns and the white bathing suit is hiddy.
But I’ll take the rest. Very pretty. That blue sweater, and the white dress, and the leather dress and…is someone writing this down?

  • mmc

Meh.  It’s probably not a good sign that my favorite thing of the collection is the (three) black sandals.

  • Beverly Nash

Usually I like Michael Kors, but this collection strikes me as frumpy.

  • cheesebomb

Well, I know I always carry a gold clutch with my swimsuit.

  • CatherineRhodes

I don’t like any of it. Or perhaps it’s negative associations with PR that cause me to lose my objectivity.

  • jennifervney

I can’t help but wonder, if that windowpane car coat and pants outfit was presented by a PR designer if it would be deemed too much by the Duchess?

  • guest2visits

Really… again with the haute couture shorts. For me, this is alittle obnoxious with the loud window pane, the loud cobalt,
and the hard laminate looking gold.  Is this what ‘stridently rich’ is supposed to look like ?
On the other hand; the last row of gowns do look like celeb-wear; RC.  Actually, most of it looks like what to wear to be
    photographed in.

  • Is anyone else getting a total Audrey Hepburn vibe from this?

…Ooooo…AudreyBot needs to get herself some of these.

  • AthenaJ

Looks like the Duchess has been smoking the hookah too much. This collection spans the spectrum of gorgeous to WTF?

  • TheOriginalLulu

“You can just see the fabulous jet-setter, hopping from place to place with an entourage carrying her luggage and her dog, while she makes long strides across countless tarmacs while sporting fabulous sunglasses.”

I’m so flattered that he designed a collection inspired by me. Oh Michael, you shouldn’t have.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

    Leather dress… my pits weep.

  • marilyn

At last.  Resort wear that someone would wear at a resort.  Kudos to Michael Kors.

  • marilyn

At last.  Resort wear that someone would wear at a resort.  Kudos to Michael Kors.

  • Love a lot of this, although that white swimsuit is seriously unflattering.

  • fursa_saida

I’m really impressed with how clearly the Turkish influence comes through, actually. I was skeptical, but a lot of this screams Istanbul.

  • golspie

    What dull-looking models.

  • dharmabum8

Ironically enough, a lot of this looks frumpy and dated.

  • bitterk

The Orange One does have impeccable taste
