Mary J. Blige in Catherine Malandrino (x2)

Posted on June 11, 2012

Oh Mary J. Blige we love you get up.

We love you mostly because you are an old-school diva who brings it in ways your younger, lesser counterparts simply have yet to master. That doesn’t mean you don’t dress a little crazy. In fact, the Way of the Diva practically requires the occasional cracktastic outfit. How very kind of you to provide us with two to talk about.

This is an INSANELY difficult dress to make work. And while we can’t say we totally love it, we are damn impressed with how well she’s pulling it off. Sure; to us, it looks a little like a trash bag dress, but Miss Mary is coming damn close to making it sing.

In London, she went in a different direction:

Pure Tina Turner in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, amirite? We don’t need another hero, bitches. We have ourselves a DIVA. Again, we don’t really love it, and we can’t say she’s WERQing it, but she’s taking an extraordinarily difficult dress to wear and just about pulling it off.

looks like she’s half way through a Borg assimilation on the 2nd look. Love her.

      • carolynmo

Or a dress for Spiderman’s mom. I have to say, though, I like the second dress better than the first.

        • Angelina M. Braden

he had the smarts to close in the waist panel and it really does look terrific on

        • Cathy S

Me too, but I think she’s really werqing that first dress.

    • octopol

I can barely focus on the style of the ‘Mad Max’ dress because the contrast between MJB’s gorgeous womanly body and the emaciated model is so shocking.  My god.

      • Kathy Marlow

        The model needs a sandwich….or 6

    • skitzfiggitous

The fitting on that top dress makes it look like she stuffed her braw with an assortment of stuffed animals from a claw machine. Like the Borg dress quite a bit, though.

      • kimmeister

        Yes, several differently-sized stuffed animals.

    • Deborah Lipp

That 2nd dress really works for me in that Tina Turner way.

    • NinaBoo

If only she’d gone with Tina Turner’s hair and accessories!

    • Judy_J

I love her in both looks.

      • Nancy Abrams

I like that she took two very exposed looks and made them age appropriate. She looks great in both.

    • amf0001

I think she’s working it better than the model in the first one. She had the smarts to close in the waist panel and it really does look terrific on her.
The second one just looks uncomfortable to me,  clearly worn to be noticed,  not giving any consideration to the wearer at all…

      • Christina Brennan

I totally agree. The 1st dress looks terrible on that model.

        • moppet

All I see is black licorice Twizzlers.

          • Flooby

All I see are the doormats I just looked at at Target.

    • DeborahJozayt

Can we talk about her hair, too? It’s very retro and against the dresses she’s wearing, it looks…. pretty fab!

      • John Hixenbaugh

Can you say “Wilona Woods” from Good Times?!!

    • Chrystyl

That second dress is WAY sexier on her than on the model.  That’s a perfect example for when men say they prefer their women with curves and leaving a little to the imagination!

      • sleah_in_norcal

you’re right!  that runway model looks pathetic.

    • ballerinawithagun

Wow! 2 garbage techniques for the Junk 2 Funk re-cycled Trashion show!!!

    • gabbilevy

I’m just grateful that she a) lined that second dress, and b) filled in the side cutout. Good for you, MJB, showing some class, Diva style. She looks good and she knows it–and that’s good enough for me.

    • hughman

That Labelle bio-pic is a GO.

      • Kiltdntiltd

Right?  Could she completely slam dunk playing Miss Patty?  Yeah Uh!

    • Dan Alexander

Always classy, sexy and fun! Luv her!

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

I love them both. I wouldn’t wear them personally and I know the materials are difficult but both these looks are working for me. She wears them with such confidence but mostly she wears clothes that fit her beautifully. Not too tight, not too short, just right. And those shoes completely work with both outfits. Lovin’ her and the Malandrino Cra-Cra – perfect combo.

    • commish24

She looks 20 years younger in the second dress.

    • jw_ny

I think part of the reason that she is pulling off each of those looks is because they fit her perfectly, neither are vulgar, she’s totally selling each look, and her accessories all work too.  Honestly, I think she looks really good in each.

    • Cassie L

That second one is infinitely better on Mary J than on the model.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i so want to see her and SWINTON in a walk-off.

      • formerlyAnon

I already know I’d give it to MJB – they’re so different, Swinton is far more likely to achieve a severe perfection, but even if the look isn’t perfect, MJB brings LIFE to her looks.

    • BrooklynBomber

Looks like Catherine Malandrino poached Georgina Chapman’s models.

Two awful dresses, though the first one looks better on MJB than on the model.

    • GorgeousThings

I can’t get beyond the fact that her foundation garment in the first dress is cutting her boobs in half.

I kind of like the second one. It’s not a great dress, but she’s pretty close to WERQing it.

    • Kristin McNamara

i think the second dress is fierce! she’s rockin that. but the first one..? i can’t really get behind the weird bunching and stretching (even though, like you said, it’s obviously a very difficult dress to pull off). to me, that plus the shininess of the fabric makes the whole dress come off kinda cheap/trashy (no pun intended), especially in the close-ups.

    • Ajuna Ariel Fenty

Trashbag chic. Get it together Mary Crispy-Chicken Blige. I can’t.

      • MilaXX

Please don’t remind me of that awful commercial. many people should have been fired for that thing.

        • Ajuna Ariel Fenty

Mary should have fired herself for getting involved with that mess. Truly tragic.

    • VicksieDo

These dresses are for a younger person, wouldn’t you say?

    • deathandthestrawberry

I really love the second dress on her, but I hate the hair. She reminds me of Kitty from The 70s Show, and while I love the character a style icon she doesn’t make.

    • kirkyo

How considerate of someone to create a dress that already comes pre-pulled and stretched for those so inclined.

    • littlemac8

Mama couldn’t wear the necessary foundation garments if she left that waist cut-out open in the first dress!

    • MilaXX

I agree she is almost making that trashbag dress work, but I actually like the Mad Max/Tina Turner dress. I just wish she had lined it all the way down. Props must also be given for wearing that old school jelly roll hair and looking good while doing so.
      Luv you Ms. MJB!

      • formerlyAnon

Yah, she could wear a school teacher shirtwaist and I’d give her props just for the hair and the innate diva oomph! it takes to make it read as fabulous.

    • Beardslee

Very impressive – not easy dresses at ALL but they are not wearing her.  Quite the contrary.

    • GTrain

That second dress is hideous to me. It kind of makes my skin crawl.

    • MajorBedhead

I prefer the girl in the Doctor Who t-shirt over that first look but the second one is pretty amazing. Not gorgeous, but definitely an attention-getter.

    • Cassie

Okay, but why does her hair resemble pastries?

    • Little_Olive

The second one is too close to “caught in a fishing net (along with all kinds os seaweed)” for me to get behind. Not loving the length either.  Hmm.

    • HeatherMcIlrath

buy some more shoes miss thang!

    • moppet

Those are graduate-level dresses for sure. The young woman (or perhaps man) in the background of the first dress pictured seems appreciative, but I’m not sure I’m there.  As for the second dress…I kinda blame Catherine Malandrino for this one. Didn’t she see that dress doesn’t look pretty at all? It’s like she’s covered with black licorice Twizzlers.

    • newleaf1

I really like the second look. I wanna be a diva…just for a day.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She’s wearing the hell out of those crazy dresses, it’s her hair/makeup/shoes that need help.

    • twocee

I dunno – I think the second dress deserves a WERQ

    • SpcilK

      Oh Aunt Mary, NO!

    • AWS

I respect and admire her artistry.  But here she looks like Lafayette from “True Blood”.

    • Kathryn

“We don’t need another hero, bitches.”  hilarious!

    • claudemtl777

Second look much better than the first one. Nicer hair, better fitting and more interesting dress.(It looks way better on her than on the model)
Why the same shoes in both??((( A slightly more dramatic shoe could def have turned the second look into a big WORQ

    • kikisayshi

I love me some MJB! I do kinda like the 2nd look here. Kinda.

    • Dani Colman

Yikes, my boobs are aching on her boobs’ behalf.

    • KathKo

Attitude, it’s all about the attitude.
No matter how silly the dress is, Mary will laugh it off and rock like no tomorrow.

    • Michael Rios

Love the first more than the second, but bow down bitches that is how you get your diva on.

    • TheOriginalLulu

She’s awesome. She looks H O T in that trashbag dress.

    • call_me_schmeg

both of these dresses look like it’s costuming leftover from a two-episode sexy robot arc on Torchwood. and i mean that in the best way possible.

    • Miss_Led

      I like the a-tisket a-tasket dress!

    • JimMcC

I’m LOVING the second look. I think she’s super close in the first one as well, but the makeup there makes her look about ten years older than the London look and I don’t love the hair. She’s still fierce, but in the second look, she’s divine.

    • lordandtaylor

      Looks good…giving her a pass.

      • Candigirl1968

Ditto.   But that pass will expire if she tries this too often.

    • marilyn

She is a very curvy woman, and has good taste.  In the first dress, she used opaque fabric in some of those cut outs, which moved the dress up from grunge to chic.  The second dress, she had the good taste to do more than the opaque granny panty under the lace shell.  She made both dresses look classic rock.  Brava!!

    • lifetime_student

      Cracktastic divaliciousness.

    • RebeccaKW

Yea, I don’t love them, but she does look good.  I think my biggest complaint is the hair which is not flattering.

      • unbornfawn

Agreed. It is the hair that takes these looks out of the WERQ zone. The style is weird and the bleach blonde is doing her no favors.

      • Pennymac

    • Victoria Le

      Hi, Frank O’Hara reference!

    • Louise Bryan

Love ‘em both.  Her curves sing!

    • Lisa Dugan

Although the first is a bit Heftyesque she’s still rocking it pretty well.  I actually love the second one on her.  I think I’d hate it on anyone else.

    • jmorino08

      That hair! I cannot!

    • eight_of_nine

I love how she is rocking the hell out of those dresses. Less DIVAtastic people might never think to try adapting them for a fuller figure but she is slammin’ in them!

    • UglyCasanova

She doesn’t give a Fuck!  Love that.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I actually like both of those on her. She’s rocking ‘em.

    • e jerry powell

I give her credit for pulling a Joanna and taking a garment that can’t be worn with underwear and putting something on under it.

She is bearing a slightly disturbing resemblance to Serena Williams, however…

    • AnaRoW

Every time I see her I hate her hair just a little more.  I don’t know why she insists on adding 20 years to her age.

    • leave_Blake_alone

I don’t think I have ever seen Mary J. Blige at a public appearance not dressed like a complete jackass. These looks aren’t diva, they’re jackass. (In the dresses’ defense, the hair is a big part of the problem.)

    • Susan Crawford

Mary, I love you! Rock those Malandrino dresses, and flip that hair because you ARE a star. (Meantime, the runway model for the second look appears to be on the verge of starvation. I’m sorry, but there is thin, and then there is frightening, and this young woman looks like death. Ms. Malandrino, look how a real woman with curves ROCKS your designs – starveling models are NEVER in fashion.)

    • PaulaBerman

The second dress looks like it was made out of black Twizzlers. Nonetheless, it’s cool.

    • quiltrx

      LOVE that second dress!

I think the main thing that isn’t working for me is the incongrous Billie-Holliday-era hair.  She needed bad-bitch hair for these dresses…you must look like you have the potential to cut a bitch!

      • e jerry powell

         Sixties, not forties.

    • joy peace

Perfect choices for Rock of Ages premiere.  Go Mary!

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She’s owning them both, love that hair. Makes the models look like little girls in Mommy’s closet.

    • PeaceBang

      I BOW DOWN.

    • guest2visits

I think the first dress looks pretty great on her; it’s the hair style that doesn’t do anything positive.
The second dress just looks too bulky and costume-y. Unfortunately; you may have to be a stick person to wear that thing.

    • understateddiva

I hate that hair with a passion.  She would werq something SO much edgier.

    • judi townsend

So distracted by her horrible hair color and style I can’t see anything else

    • RzYoung

I really like both these outfits on her and I love her hair like that too. She rocks, and i also like how she’s not going all crazy messing with her face. She comes across as just super confident in herself.

    • Cousin_Rose

I like both looks.  The first may look like a trash bag dress but it’s a winning look.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I would say she’s pulling them off as well.  The first one is too close to a trash bag and the second one just looks really heavy.  I’m not digging the hair.  But damnit, I love her.

    • ckokopuff

The second one looks like licorice.  Yum.

    • Judy_S

Unbelievable. To me this is a WERQ–to take a trash bag (or a dress made of trash bag macrame) and look fabulous. She looks like *herself* in these absurd dresses.

    • julnyes

Loving the second look on Ms. Mary!

    • Alyson Epstein

      except for the shoes

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

What? Oh Mary J. Yes, of course. I was distracted by the AWESOME Dr. Who shirt modeled by the girl behind Ms. Blige.

    • minnye

She’s fab but ohhhhh, that first dress just makes me shudder. It looks like tight plastic wrap. Can you imagine sweating in it all day and peeling it off at the end of the evening? Ugh. Ugh.

    • formerlyAnon

The London look is light years better than the one she wore in L.A., IMO.  And while her makeup could flatter her more (code for even out her skin tone and give her more color/more of a glow), I LOVE the way she’s working that hair.

    • Nolalala

Isn’t that a Doctor Who t-shirt in the background?

    • suzq

I’ll give her a WERQ on dress #2.  She looks fierce and gets extra points for not wearing just underwear underneath.

    • ErinnF

      I love that second dress!

    • LilyPad

First look: agree, trash bag dress. Jewelry is poorly chosen and does not add to look. Hair is just what?
Second look: does not appear to flatter her shape, but is interesting and fun to look at. Jewelery has cool geometric feel and brings out the shapes in the dress well. Love the shoes. Hair is slightly better.
