Kiernan Shipka in Miu Miu

Posted on June 15, 2012

Because of course Kiki would show up in head to toe Miu Miu.

Kiernan Shipka attends the 14th Annual Young Hollywood Awards in  Miu Miu.

Miu Miu Bow Pump

That poof on her head is half cute, half a little silly-looking. The dress and shoes are adorable; completely age-appropriate, but with enough of an edge that a baby fashionista can enjoy wearing it. We’re just not loving the heaviness of the bodice.

Still, kudos all around to the adults in charge of her life. She’s straddling that line between child and grownup and no one seems to be in a rush to push her to the other side of it. She never dresses too old for her age but her love of fashion still comes through. The world better watch out when she hits her teens, though. She’s gonna give Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld a run for their money.

Perfectly adorable, and I’m a gazillion years older than her, but I covet the shoes.

      • 3boysful

I will fight you for them!  (Also several gazillion years older than Kiki.)

Also, I think the hair is adorbs.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Def most convincing use of the topknot I’ve seen!

I think it’s interesting – having talked so much this season about infantalising fashion for women in the 50s and 60s, that this divine child has stepped out in a pretty subversive version of the babydoll silhouette of the era.

          And I want her shoes.

          • Anna Tree

Join me in the posse willing to steal those shoes off her feet!

    • Laurie Bergman

The bodice looks a bit like those wide beaded stretch bracelets that were popular a few years ago, but overall she is indeed cute as a button. Miu Miu suits her beautifully.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Absolutely, Miu Miu is usually a great combo of stylish and fun, perfect for the young star (with loads of cash) who doesn’t want to stop playing dress up just yet.

        • A. W.

I both love and hate Miu Miu. I wear their shoes and jewelry almost exclusively (the floor of my closet is a skyline of muted pink boxes) but the clothing, which is so very cute, has no place in the wardrobe of a busty girl like me. How frustrating to see such a cute garment, knowing that the only people it flatters are children and AA-cups!

    • moppet

She’s so sweet all my teeth just fell out.

    • http://twitter.com/sarahohmygod Sarah Oleksyk

LOVE THOSE SHOES. I can’t wait to see where she’s going career-wise, but I love her so much as a petulant tween that I sort of want her to stay that way for a while!

      • A. W.

I’ve been rewatching the early seasons of Mad Men and she is soooo adorable, I had forgotten what a darling baby she was.

        • charlotte

           “Polly doggy!”

      • Emily Rose

She’s doing voice-acting work on The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra.

    • jmorino08

The dress and shoes are so cute but that hair is just sad.

    • MoHub

I’d like a ballet flat instead of the heels, but otherwise age-appropriate and cute.

      • Ceur

I was gonna say, Miu Miu has the most extravagant sparkly and pretty ballet flats, she would look amazing.

        • teensmom99

I think heel keeps it from being too juvenile.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

She’s actually 12 so i don’t think there’s such thing as “too juvenile” for her unless she’s wearing a bib and a pacifier ;)

            • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

I dunno.  The dress screams “Kindergartner” to me — it seems way too juvenile for the gorgeous shoes, and the bodice makes it seem like someone bound her breasts.

          • Ceur

If someone should wear sparkly pink overpriced designer ballet flats it’s a privileged 12 year old girl.

      • alyce1213

I agree ballet flats would be fine, but just imagine how GOOD she felt wearing more grown-up, really pretty, feminine shoes like these.  I bet she was really happy, and it shows.

        • Pennymac

Seeing her in those shoes made me remember my first pair; blue suede platforms. I felt terribly grown up. Young miss has that same smile on her face: she feels special and it shows. Luv her!

      • http://twitter.com/LPsometimes LP

I think 12 is old enough for kitten heels.  Especially in an era where most children’s clothes are just scaled down adult styles, a pink lace dress and low-heels are not so old.

        • MoHub

I was 12 when I got my first pair of “heels,” and they were indeed little kitten heels. I was only allowed to wear them on the most special of occasions.

Funny thing is that I’m 60 now, and I don’t and won’t wear heels at all. In fact, finding attractive, dressy flats that fit has become something of a quest for me.

    • Beardslee

Very nice, age apropriate and interesting.  But is the waistline a little high on her?

    • Andrew Schroeder

      Those shoes are adorbs.

    • MissAnnieRN

      Luv huh

    • sockandaphone

Adorable and I would totally wear those shoes because theyre so cute.

    • Judy_J

She is just too precious, and I mean that in a good way.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/EF6STGKXK5NO6OEYYXYO56QCLU Sam

Cute, but what happened to the go go boots?

      • charlotte

         Daddy said no.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I think it’s perfect, but I’d be happier for a 12 year-old to wear flats. At least it’s not go-go boots.

      • charlotte

I’d be happier if more people beyond the age of 12 wore flats!

    • margaret meyers

Those little Cuban heels are hot.

    • granddelusion

She’s how old? 13? Would like the shoes with a lower heel; hate them as is. Dress is cute.

    • GTrain

love it and she’s working it well without being obnoxious, so rare for Hollywood young ‘uns.

    • Violina23

I kinda adore the bodice, it’s the skirt material that reminds me of the bedspread I had growing up.  Overall I think she looks adorable

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

She looks so happy – and that’s the best part.  Beats the heck out of sulky former child stars … (Kristen, Taylor – I’m talking to YOU)

    • mjude

      what an absolute doll

    • formerlyAnon

“kudos all around to the adults in charge of her life”

      YES.

I don’t love this dress on her the way I love a lot of what she wears, but it is fine, she is cute, and I think the silly little-girlness of the hair balances out the more ‘grown up’ vibe of the shoes. Which I would wear if I could afford enough shoes to have a profusion of bows on some of them. (I believe strongly that bows should be deployed extremely sparingly after age 9).

      • SRQkitten

i think I’ve read interviews where it does sound like she makes a lot of her own choices with clothes but, yes, kudos to the grow ups in her real life for being way more together than the ones in her tv life.

        srq

    • Rand Ortega

She reminds me of Nicole Kidman pre too much work done.
I love the entire outfit, she’s the very definition of precious.

    • boomchicabowwow

New Hollywood rule:  If you are a woman of any age about to hit the red carpet, have Kiernan aprove your shoe choice.  You will never go wrong.  Thank you and you’re welcome.

    • SapphoPoet

Adorable, but the heels look a little high for her.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

I agree. Also, the peep toes throw them into adult territory. Fabulous shoes, but not for a 12-year-old.

    • kingderella

pure love. what i love most is probably the make-up, which is fresh and cute and completely age appropriate.

    • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

I LOVE that she is still dressing age-appropriate.  GOod job, K!

    • JasmineAM

She is just so cute! I hate kids, but she’s adorable! LOL. Yeah flats would be better than heels, but she looks so sweet.

    • Lisa Dugan

I think she looks absolutely adorable!

    • MilaXX

Now on Keirnan the poof looks all kinds of adorbs. I love the entire look. This is a WERQ for me. Also completely agree about the adutls in her life.

    • MilaXX

Pretty sure I was allowed to wear kitten heels at 12.

      • http://twitter.com/LPsometimes LP

Ditto.  I wore platform sandals during the summer in middle school and my mom was one of the stricter parents when it came to what I could wear.  I have a very old-fashioned southern family who thinks smock dresses are appropriate at age 12, haha.  I also had to wear kids clothes until I was in high school because I was a small person, but yeah, 12 isn’t too young for a heel like that.  Especially for a special occasion.

        • MilaXX

lol I was so short I shopped in the kiddie shop until high school as well.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

How freaking cute is she?  I love it all.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/toodleskitty79?feature=guide AWS

      What TLo said…

    • TheOriginalLulu

She looks lovely and completely age-appropriate. And happy!

You bettah work those shoes, little girlfriend!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710255360 Shannon Marie Slade

She’s great, I love her style. What I really noticed is that she’s wearing the clothes not vice versa, I noticed her before the outfit and that is unbelievable for someone her age. It’s also amazing to think that she was hired on Mad Men at an age where she wasn’t going to show the acting ability that she shows now, they really lucked out on her. She’s one of the best actors on a show full of great actors.

    • alyce1213

Squeeeee! Love her, wish she were my little girl (I am daughter-deprived.)

    • http://annequichante.wordpress.com/ Anne

      I love her eyebrows!

    • SewingSiren

Head to toe perfect. She is the perfect Miu Miu client. The whole line is pitch perfect for child stars.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I can’t handle how cute she is. I want to smoosh her. And then steal her clothes. Not like I can fit into them, but still.

    • Lina_bee

She looks fabulous. I’m also dubious about the bodice and I’m not sure that shade of pink on the shoulders is really ideal with her skin tone — I wonder what doing the shoulder bits in a silver/opal and limiting the pink to the skirt would look like — but on the whole it’s a great look.

    • TieDye64

Dang, she’s adorable. The hair, it’s just alright and I’d like to see this with ballet flats instead. She looks cute and it really is nice no one’s rushing her into looking older.

    • sashaychante

Too CUTE!  I LUV her hair in the top knot bun.  Very ballerina.  The shoes…tots adorbs.

    • Anna Tree

I know she has a stylist and people but at her age I was wearing purple leggings. She has a great ability to carry clothes in someone so young!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/UTGALURO3K2NWLDN2A3SWHGMRA Lindsay

It’s too short… adorable, but I’d never let my daughter out in that. She’s too old for the “oh I can see your bloomers!” comments.

      • Lilithcat

It’s barely above her knees!  I think it looks shorter than it really is, due to the placement of the bodice.

      • alyce1213

Too short?  No way.  It’s a perfectly respectable length.

      • http://twitter.com/LPsometimes LP

It’s almost to her knees when she’s doing a leaning-back pose.  So many conservative comments on here make me wonder why I don’t see more 12-year-olds dressed like sister wives instead of wearing short shorts and tank tops like is much more common.

        • Corsetmaker

          Agreed!
It also makes me wonder what is happening to society that people look at kids clothes in this way. That people are looking at a perfectly decent length of skirt or an obviously pink fabric lining, regular kids clothes stuff that’s been around forever and are seeing something sexual really worries me. Because it’s saying more about the people seeing that than any potential risk.

    • Susan Crawford

So cute! And I actually adore the shoes – I would totally wear them!

    • Aurumgirl

The shoes are adorable, and so is she.  This dress suits her well.

    • marilyn

I think she is great.  However, the dress is not necessarily appropriate for her age group.  The reason is that the bodice is meant to to have the illusion of being unlined.  The top is done, so we are supposed to think there is no lining under the bold white lace.  Of course there is.  But, I don’t like the idea that such a young girl is supposed to be wearing see through clothing.  It is a small thing because she is very cute and appropriate.  This is not the baby-beauty-queen circuit.  However, the designer ought to keep the see-through look for adults.  This would not have been an issue if the dress were in a color no where near skintone on her.  Then there would be no suggestion of peeking through the little girl’s blouse.   I don’t know if I am being too protective, or if thisis a big gaffe by the designer.

      • altissima

The lace bodice is clearly lined by the pink fabric of the top. The fact that you see it a peekaboo says more about your own perversions than any fault of the designer.

      • alyce1213

Too protective, I think.  And I’m firmly, resolutely on the side of NO SEXY AT ALL for kids, but I don’t see suggestive, flesh-toned see-through here. I see matching pink with plastic (?) daisy overlay.

      • Corsetmaker

It’s an obvious overlay on pink fabric, there’s nothing remotely suggestive about it :/ It’s clearly pink and not nude.

    • kikisayshi

      This makes me smile :)

    • bluefish

Adorable … She’s giving the vast majority of ladies on the red carpet a run for their money as of now.  And she’s certainly giving her fellows actors and actresses on MM the same.  I LOVE her.

    • http://oneblueberry.com/ LaVonne Ellis

Those sock-buns are all the rage, apparently, and they look ridiculous on adults… but on Kiernan? ADORABLE. Love everything about this look on her.

    • JMansm

That dress is so cute. I really like her hair too; it’s very like disheveled ballerina.

    • suzq

      Those shoes are to die!

    • cleep1000

Adorable. The bun’s a little high, but who cares?

    • KaileeM

She is just the cutest thing. She’s WAY more interesting on the red carpet than any of the other Mad Men ladies!

    • enchanted216

I adore the dress and the shoes.  I don’t know who this child is, but she is looks absolutely adorable!  I would adopt her:)

    • beebee10

      ADORABLE!!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Pretty darn adorable.  Love the shoes.

    • guest2visits

So Very Cute.   Pretty dress, pretty shoes, crazy-cute top knot.

    • quiltrx

Okay, I had to look up her age, so she’s spared a ‘twee’ comment for a few more years.

Really cute outfit, AWESOME shoes, but the hair looks goofy and very “ballet recital.”

    • Jessica Goldstein

I would have preferred a slightly lower heel, but that’s a minor quibble. Adorable (she probably hates being called that), flattering, and appropriate (probably hates that, too). Plus, look how happy and confident she looks. Kudos.

    • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

Honestly she’s the best dressed tween out there— Hailee and Chloe are more stylish, but Kiernan ALWAYS looks impeccable.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

She is so fabulous and definitely one to watch!  Love her on Mad Men.  She is definitely a great young actress.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

Age appropriate and she looks like SHE likes how she looks so she looks HAPPY which she will learn is everything….

    • http://twitter.com/TheSnickleboom Snickleboom

She’s cute!  Who the heck is she?

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      Cutie patootie.
      Want those shoes!!!

    • Corsetmaker

Lovely and a good choice for her age. I like the heaviness of the bodice, it gives it a little bit of edge and stops it looking too babyish, which it could easily do otherwise.

    • bellafigura1

Yeah, this is a great little look for her.

    • greyhoundgirl

She doesn’t have to give Hailee and Chloe a run for their money–she can join with them in fashion sisterhood!

    • allisankelly

She is just beautiful in this. Those shoes are straight-up fairy tale material…so pretty.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NUZ2RGIDRXKK6ADHFPPCR6S3WI MariaM

She’s adorable, and I love the shoes.  But I hate the look.  I think it’s beyond age-appropriate, I think it’s kind of infantalizing. She looks like a five year old who ran into mommy’s closet before someone snapped a picture.  The smile is fantastic though, so if she feels pretty, who am I to complain?

    • PaulaBerman

She just about always gets it right. She is a little goddess. I unconditionally adore her and hope her post- Mad Man career is amazing.

    • nannypoo

She looks adorable as always, but I think this dress would be more appropriate for a six-year-old at a birthday party. She’s 12. I think she is at the most difficult age to dress because she’s in between this type of dress and whatever comes next. The usual mistake is to dress like a teen-ager, but here I think she has gone a little too far the other way. Perfect shoes, though. I’ve never seen her show, but I just love her anyway. I hope her parents and handlers continue to make good choices for her.

    • jeeplibby02

Pretty shoe, but not for a 12-year-old, and a bit heavy for a summer dress with eyelet detailing.  She should still be in ballerina flats when dressed up. The shoe is also not a kitten heel; it’s a (modern) louis heel– and I’ll take it in a 6 1/2.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Adorable. I can’t believe she’s only 12; she seems so mature.

    • Tamara Hogan

Sorry, guys, and nothing against Ms. Shipka, but I find the whole idea of a 12 year old walking a red carpet wearing borrowed designer clothes and a professional smile beyond depressing. Perhaps we could wait until a young actress experienced regular menstrual cycles first?

    • buildmeatower

I was wearing heels at 12. Not regularly, but for special events or when I thought I could get away with it. I don’t see any problem with hers, and I disagree that it’s too grown up. I don’t actually like the shoes she chose (the bows are a bit much) but their height isn’t the problem.

    • Laylalola

She is the exact age I always envisioned Mondo designing for and making a killing as a superstar for that set. (Why isn’t that happening?)

    • Cat_In_A_Hat

      Absolutely adorable!

    • jen_vasm

She’s going to give Haillee Stansfield and Chloe Moretz a walk for their money, as in she’s going to walk all over them, no contest. They’re not going to know what hit them.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

She looks fantastic. That is such an amazing dress but frankly I can’t imagine anyone BUT a pre-teen wearing it. Or Michelle Williams.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Perfect for her.

    • RzYoung

      So so cute!

    • sweetlilvoice

      Adorable, love it.

    • nancylee61

She is adorable, but the proportions are off on the bodice. IT seems too short or something, which makes the dress look of, IMHO.
