Katy Perry in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on June 27, 2012

We’re totally digging retro-Katy. The current retro-Katy, anyway. Things could be radically different by this time tomorrow.

Katy Perry attends the premiere of “Katy Perry: Part of Me” in Los Angeles in head-to-toe Dolce&Gabbana.

Granted, she looks like a model at a 1955 car show, but then again, that’s pretty freaking awesome. That dress is adorable and the hair and makeup are 1950s-housewife perfect. Brava, girl. Say what you will about her, she knows how to have fun with her style.

She looks great, she has a great team for sure. Her skin always looks so good, how does she do that!

    • Have you seen those Proactive commercials?!?

    • The secret of her skin? A good base coating of vinyl based spackle followed by three sprayed on topcoats and a matt sealer.

  • In_Stitches

If only the drapes didn’t match the carpet…

    The rest is fabulous.

    • Bahaha! First snort out loud of the day (and it’s almost bedtime here)!!!

  • It must be fun to be her! She looks like she’s having a blast.

    • Esz

Yeh I agree – she can dress absolutely mental, any day of the week, and people are all like “aaah well that’s Katy for ya!”

  • Awesome! And look…her boobs are gently cradled in soft velvet rather than smooshed into angry baby heads.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Now I will spend the rest of the day wishing my boobs were being gently cradled in soft velvet.

      • Aurumgirl

I think I’ll wait until the smell of snow is in the air until I cradle my boobs in velvet, thanks.  Right now they want to be cradled in about four feet of cool water.  It is pretty hot outside where I am.

  • greyhoundgirl

  • My 16 year-old self would have coveted that hair.
*sigh* What can I say, I still covet it. :-/

    • I just got it done B-) worth every cent!

  • Perfection, top to bottom.  The kind of totally put together styling we have come to decry, of late, where everything matches, and in this case, looks amazing.  She has a face and body that was made for this look.

  • GillianHolroyd

(but red velvet in the summer?)

    •  Ah but when you know you look THIS good in it, you smile, and suffer for your art.

    • Gawd, exactly!  Red freaking velvet in June, for chrissakes!

      • This outfit would be perfect for Christmas.

    • ballerinawithagun

That was my first thought, TLo didn’t bring that up!!!

  • SapphoPoet

She looks perfect here. Even the purple hair works as an accent color. My only quibble is velvet in June, but she’s pulling it off.

  • ccinnc

    Very Dita.

  • j_anson

She’s very pretty, but damn she must spend a lot of time getting her hair dyed. I hope she can, like, work on lyrics while doing it or something.

  • mjude

she looks adorable but seriously velvet in june?  am i going crazy?

    • If you are, then I’m right there with you.

      • mjude

        thank you 🙂

  • MilaXX

I see my fellow BK’s have beaten me to the punch. yes she looks cute, bit this is an outfit better suited for Christmas than LA in June.

    • amywinns

I think it’s too much for June, too, but also recognize that if she did wear it in latter December, I’d gag and say it was OTT Christmas-y. So, might as well go for it in the antipode!

  • JEALOUS. WANT THAT DRESS. Of course that could be said for a lot of celebrity-donned dresses, but this is the kind of dress that you see in an old ad or a movie and it makes you daydream.

    • Deb_Lynn

oh my. exactly. she’s like a childhood fantasy in that outfit, and I’m loving every second of it.

    •  My husband keeps saying that I should wear a red dress when we renew our vows. As that is planned for the 10th anniversary I have 4 years to save for the dress!

  • gabbilevy

First, I am coveting that dress.

Second… Katy is a cartoon character, and she can absolutely do the one color look and make it werq. This is perfect for her.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I love it!  It’s kitchy and perfectly her.

  • Introspective

again, a look that seems way too hot for that bright ass sun beaming through the shot. all that said, she is serving up von Teese realness, and I’ll take this any day over that flapper schtick.

bonus points for getting that hair color under control too. this makes her eyes pop but still brings a certain maturity to her that the bubblegum shades just werent doing.

  • nannypoo

She looks beautiful. No one else could wear this as well.

  • Great!

  • Lilithcat

LOVE the dress!  But velvet in June?

  • guest2visits

    This completely works for Katy; she’s just beautiful.  She could be story book charactor, or an ad for swank home appliances;
but she’s very adorable in her blinding red velvet and purple hair.

  • Pretty freaking awesome is right. Even with the purple hair.

  • kelsita421

what a fabulous way to start this wednesday — thanks, tlo!

  • hexiadetrix

    Poor man’s Dita von Teese.

    • l3icest3r

      Well said!

  • She looks gorgeous and happy. The hair is fab on her, so much better than the blue. But as one commenter said, she’s a cartoon character and can get away with a variety of looks the rest of us couldn’t.

The velvet in June is an odd choice, but I bet she just tried this on, fell in love (and why not), and said “screw it, I’m Katy Perry and I’m not waiting till Christmas to rock this frock.”

  • Spreecord

Much like with Lady Gaga, I get the feeling that it must be exhausting for her to get ready every day. “Let’s see. I’ve been a flapper, Minnie Mouse, two short Asian girls in a potato sack, the ghost of Christmas past, Barbarella, and a sex droid so far this week. Should I dress as a teapot or a sentient jade carving today? Man, I just want to wear yoga pants.”

    • kimmeister

I’m waiting for the sentient jade carving look!

    • Well, the only difference is that it comes naturally to Gaga, while Katy struggles time and time again to find something that fits her all-American, and quite basic, looks.

  • Because velvet in June is oh so summery.

  • MsALVA

Katy is treading into Dita Von Teese wannabe land. She is way out of her league.

  • Susan Crawford

I really hope she keeps the retro style for a little bit – this is the best she’s looked in a long time. LOVE that dress, but VELVET? In the LA summer sun? At least it’s strapless.

And gradually, ever so gradually, I am being worn down to the point where the purple hair actually is looking good to me. Remind me to up my dosage on the Merlot, OK Kittens and Fawns?

  • Judy_J

    Barbie, you’re beautiful.

  • BazoDee

That’s such a great silhouette for her shape. She looks awesome.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

She’s so obviously enjoying herself, and she’s doing that retro style wonderfully-have fun, Katy!

  • TheOriginalLulu

The velvet in June is giving me hot flashes, but I gotta admit she looks great. I just love how she always looks like she’s having such a great time, posing and smiling for the cameras. I find it very hard to hate on this chick.

  • crash1212

Perfection. Not sure anybody else could’ve pulled this off so successfully.

  • AlinaValero

velvet… june… the shape is amazing but i’m sweating looking at her.

  • MightyMarshal

She looks like a Dior model with that styling. I did a double take when I saw that it was Dolce and Gabbana.

  • Goth Betty! I give it two snaps up!

  • Marian Humin

    Save it for Christmas time.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

I am a sucker for a red dress….any red dress.  And any red shoe.

    She looks fab!

  • amian3

I am sorry, it is June and she is wearing velvet. Ack.

  • I love it – she looks fabulous. But again… this seems a bit heavy and wintery for June.

  • Lina_bee

That dress is to die for. I was just thinking that it looks like she’s taking notes from Dita, although they’re both drawing on the same sources, so who knows. Thing is, this style works for Katy where others simply don’t…maybe because the 50s hourglass silhouette lets her play to her strengths. Still liking the grape hair…but her makeup is way too visibly pancaked on.

  • Calinda_L

Fun! Yes! That is the exact word to describe it. On the one hand, she doesn’t seem to take herself too seriously (she doesn’t expect that every single outfit will be her first, last and only chance to make an impression), but she takes risks and is willing to go out of her comfort zone. She could just as easily Lea Michele it up and only for for things that are obviously sexy (which, of course, she does do from time to time), but she doesn’t and I really appreciate that about her.

  • judybrowni

    gorge, banannas, etc.

  • SophieCollier

Back to the Manic Panic, but at least it’s just a little.  Do you think she’s moving in on Dita’s turf?  I think she looks great, but I can’t help thinking “Wow, she reminds me of Dita Von Teese.”

  • afabulous50

I can’t believe you’re not going to chastize her for wearing velvet in June….

  • newtonGOTbeaned

It looks like happy Katy is really back! I’m thrilled. Happy Katy wears fun things.

  • Lena Bea

That is awesome. I would personally label this as a WERQ.

  • PeaceBang

    WERQ! Nailed it!

  • DaveUWSNYC

Boy if Lucy and Ethel could only see that…

  • Sara__B

I’m enjoying her current phase. I hope it lasts for a while.

  • HobbitGirl

Oooooh, love. Red velvet in late June’s maybe questionable, but it’s just gorgeous!

  • enchanted216

She looks ammazing!  I am really distubed by all the fall fashion, lately.  In the dead of winter, everyone will be wearing summer dresses?  They were last year.  Or maybe thses pics are all in Australia?

  • Pants_are_a_must

I like this look so much, I wish it wasn’t on Katy Perry. Yes, this kitten is bitter till the end.

  • To paraphrase a line from Pulp Fiction:  She looks like Madonna from Lucky Star video.  Curvy, pale, full eyebrows.  Don’t ever change, Katy!

  • butterflysunita

    She looks adorable!  Love it.

  • EEKstl

She looks great, I far prefer Retro Katy to Candy Katy.

  • CassieLee22

    LOVE the dress

  • sk8tfan

I love this. She was off-kilter with her style for awhile, but she’s found her stride again. The style showcases her body beautifully, the color is magnificent on her, her skin is perfection, the hair’s great, the shoes fit. Brava!

  • leftcoastpickle

This is how to dress. Hollywood Glam! Love this.

  • ChelseaNH

She’s like the Disney Princess version of Dita von Teese.

  • unbornfawn

    Love the dress.

  • TieDye64

    Love it!

  • janetjb

    She looks just about perfect.

  • formerlyAnon

If she can act, I’d be trying to cast her as Veronica in an “Archies” movie.  (which would, inevitably, be tragically bad and a blot on everyone’s career, but still . . .)

  • taylormade7

She looks great.  I just wish that dress wasn’t velvet.  It seems rather heavy for June.  She looks like Christmas.

  • Vera L-

she needs to do a buddy picture with baby vamp Jessica from True Blood

  • She has crazy eyes in that first picture.  Love the shoes but velvet in June?

  • bellafigura1

    Wowser, off the hook, perfect.

  • I really like this a lot better then her newer stuff, it’s more like what she used to wear when she first got big.

  • Judih1

She always looks like a clown or somebody wearing a costume. Getting kinda tired of that

  • She’s no Miss Dita (not even close) but this is good on her

  • quiltrx

Beautiful!  A look that would do Miss Dita proud.

  • I’m liking the purple hair better than the blue.

  • Bozhi

    I love those earrings.

  • Katy needs to go back to retro pin-up girl styles!

  • Esz

SMASHING dress! Wowee – that’s about the only way velvet looks good I reckon – all puffed up and structured, every other way it makes anyone look fatter than they are.

Mega love! I would wear that in a heartbeat, hair clashing and all!

  • Beyond stunning. Best she’s looked in a LONG time.

  • Call me Bee

Velvet in deep summer?  Oh no, dear.  Your costume is better suited for the Holidays.

  • librarygrrl64

Great color and silhouette, but velvet dress AND pumps in almost-July???

  • melanie0866

LOVE, but it’s June – red velvet in June?  The rule is, “No velvet after Valentine’s.”

  • TSkot

Why can’t she leave her hair color alone?  Makes her look like a trashy mall rat, no matter how fab the clothes/
