Katie Holmes in New York City

Posted on June 25, 2012

Hey, Miss Katie!

Katie Holmes out and about in NYC.

Ikat Braided Cami by The Gap. Pleated Maxi Skirt by Holmes & Yang. Studded Cuff by Hermès

We just wanted to say that we love the idea of you swanning around in GAP clothes, and we really love that pleated maxi skirt and cami, but we don’t really think they go together that well. Still, good on you for your thriftiness. That must be why you can afford an Hermès cuff.

Not crazy about the slippers on her feet either.

      • AudreysMom

         huaraches?

        • http://thnlnk.com/financial-reports/TheLink/024 Mary G. Perry

she looks cool, comfy and happy.  I don’t mind the cash of colors at all...DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

        I think those are espadrilles.

        • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

whatever – they are beyond fug!

    • SapphoPoet

Yikes. Nothing about this is noteworthy.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Considering how insane hot its been in NYC, she looks cool, comfy and happy.  I don’t mind the cash of colors at all.

      • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I actually think they sort of work together.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

It kinda reminds me of sari color combinations I’ve seen in India.

      • A. W.

I love the clash of colors, it’s the shoes that are throwing me off here. A nice pair of camel sandals would have tied the look together as breezy and young. It has indeed been crazy hot lately, I’ve been wearing as much chiffon as possible.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yeah its kind of a nude sandal.  A better choice would have been something with a tad bit more oomph, color-wise. I could even get behind a sandal with black patent straps.

      • alyce1213

I’d sooner set my hair on fire than wear a long, pleated skirt like that in NYC in the heat we had.  I doubt you’ve tried it – it’s not comfy at all.Too much fabric, the material is shiny, which is never looks cool (temperature). It’s a heat-trapping horror, you get sweat dripping down your legs, eew. Plus, it’s too long.
        The top’s okay, though.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

           Chagrin!!!!
I should have surmised that. I’m a regular kilt wearer, as in every, single day. I should have remembered about the heat trap issue.

          • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

I LOVE that you wear kilts every single day.  I made my husband a running kilt (which he LOVES) and I once made a desert camo kilt for a Marine stationed in Afghanistan.  You can thank me later for the mental picture of a Marine in a kilt.  =)

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Thanking you right now. Great way to start my day!

            • adnama79

Did he wear it?  Did you know him or did you just send it in a generic care package?

              That is a great image.

        • adnama79

With the right kind of fabric, a long skirt is the coolest option in the heat, though.  I live in long skirts in the Texas summers.  I’m wearing one right now that has sheen but is so gauzy it’s super comfy.  And I hear they’re popular in India and the Arab countries…

That skirt is silk – probably comfy.  http://www.polyvore.com/holmes_yang_pleated_maxi_skirt/thing?id=39737374

    • CPK1

did she get dressed in the dark? while fleeing from a fire? All the pieces are cute (minus the inexplicable shoes) but how do any of those things, as T Lo said, go together?

    • CPK1

      ETA: ugly bag too

      • bellafigura1

That’s a Henry Beguelin woven leather handmade bag, retails for +$1500.  I covet madly.  Also, I think the whole look works!  She looks very summer-in-Manhattan.

    • Sobaika

That she also sells her own pleated maxi skirts for a grand might also have something to do with it. Gotta find me a knockoff.

    • http://twitter.com/_karenbee_ Karen Bee

I’m probably alone on this, but I’d love to see a collaboration with @surisburnbook on this one.

    • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

TC killed … er, I meant fired all her gays.

    • A. W.

Gentlemen, I’m a total fashion brandwhore myself; I refuse to let anything other than Miu Miu pumps go on my feet, etc. But crediting Katie for “thriftiness” by wearing an item from the Gap seems unnecessarily posh, sort of the opposite end of the eye-rolling spectrum as the people who say “You spent $200 on a pair of jeans? By george, how wasteful of you!” She should be credited for wearing a lovely little top, not credited for wearing a lovely little top that commoners might be able to afford.

      • JasmineAM

This “commoner”, as you put it, think it is nice she IS wearing something that normal girls could wear. Not saying the GAP is cheap, but it’s not couture. Most Hollywood folks don’t wear things that the average girl can pick up at the mall. You yourself sound awful posh with the whole “nothing but Miu Miu on THESE puppies!!”.

        • A. W.

I was using “commoner” sarcastically, I guess it didn’t translate very well. My point was that I love expensive stuff as much as the next person, but it’s ridiculous to say wearing something from the Gap is thrifty. Thrifty is Walmart or secondhand, not a $50-odd top.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=664429801 Kate Clausen

Agreed, $50 for a tank top is not dirt cheap.  Maybe it’s thrifty for celebrities.  I mean, what’s $50 to someone like Katie Holmes?  I bet she has a jar of La Mer at home, not the lotion I buy from the drugstore!

          • amywinns

Pretty sure TLo were using “thriftiness” a smidge sarcastically too. Therefore, this whole thread of comments amuses.

    • http://twitter.com/gatecrewgirl Trotter Roller

My favorite thing about this outfit is the hair tie on the wrist.

      • butterflysunita

Good eye!  I always end up wearing hair ties on my wrist in summer–want to be ready to pull my hair back if the heat gets to me.

      • GorgeousThings

Yes! I can’t get behind the idea of maxi skirts in the city for that reason. Or anywhere else, for that matter.

    • pattyw

Look how low that halter dips. Where are her boobs?

      • AmandaCathleen

I was just going to say—I’d like this outfit a whole lot more if the cami was yanked up a good couple inches. Regardless of whether the items even go together, it just looks sloppy and unflattering with the tank dipping that low.

    • lamamu

The bag! The shoes! The hair scrunchy on her other wrist! Girlfriend, hold the potato-sack bag in place with the arm sporting the Hermes cuff. She ALWAYS manages to make herself into a sartorial mess, even with the best designer access in the world.

    • http://twitter.com/starlounging Ann M. Erickson

      ewwwwwww

    • TieDye64

I don’t mind the idea of the top and maxi together, I actually like it, so much as I find the FIT of the top makes it look sloppy. And damn, those shoes are crazy ugly.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

If her clothing choices are reflections of her mental state –YIKES!

    • aeg66

Love the skirt but good Lord does she real think bad dressing is editorial style fashion. Its not.

    • kimmeister

The bottom of that skirt must’ve been FILTHY by the end of the day.

    • Little_Olive

No. That skirt looks like fire hazard. The shoes are sad.

I dig the idea but the execution is lacking.

    • http://grandmassewingcabinet.com/ DrJulieAnn

I don’t have a problem with the color combination, it is the pattern of the top fighting with the visual “stripes/lines” of the pleated skirt that is making it look exceedingly wonky to me.  (Plus, the top seems a bit too big making her look unkempt but I’ll let that part slide because of the heat).

    • Lina_bee

I kind of wish the skirt were navy and the bag were a light canvas color. Canvas flats would be better than these sandals, too, I think. The green in the top suits her very nicely, though.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PHBN5RJ6BJHC72S22IIP3J437E Jae

She loves this skirt apparently because it is the same she wore on the red carpet at some other event TLo covered…she is like a five year old who likes to wear her rain boots with every outfit

      • AnaRoW

I don’t think wearing a skirt twice (which I actually find refreshing since so few celebrities are seen wearing anything more than once) counts as wearing it all the time.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Given the recent weather in NYC … literal hot mess.

    • Lilithcat

Y’know, we usually need to tell these folks to go up a size.  In the case of this skirt, she needs to go down a size (at least).  She is swimming in that thing.

      The top is way cute.

      • anotherEloise

She’s swimming in the top, too!

    • http://twitter.com/kerrymccombs Kerry McCombs

Have you guy’s seen Suri’s Burn Book tumblr? It is HYSTERICAL.

      http://surisburnbook.tumblr.com/

    • SneakyKitty

Haha, at first I thought, “oh, how nice and down to earth of her to wear a Gap top”, and then I read that it’s an Hermès cuff.  Well.

Sorry, but any time I see green and purple together, I automatically think “The Hulk.”

    • introspective

the bright colors are cute (my nod to saying something nice)

everything else about this outfit fails. homegirl looks haggard like a mom of 5 with no nannies, and not like someone wearing hermes jewelry. sorry girl. bye.

    • Pants_are_a_must

That skirt is tragic. How fitting is it that it comes from her line of (yet-to-be-proved-not-to-be-FUG) fashion line.

I am holding myself back so hard right now from making the obvious jokes.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Bleh. And a long skirt traps the heat.

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

I think it’s a fine casual look. The skirt is perhaps a tad too dressy but meh. It’s fine.

    • Sara__B

      It’s hot. I give her a pass.

    • unbornfawn

Are we going to be seeing a bunch of outfits with pieces that in no way go together? This is the second one today!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

I like that she’s rocking out in Gapwear, and most of all, she looks kinda happy.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Is the skirt dragging the concrete in that last pic?  The colors don’t bother me as much as how shiny and formal the skirt looks compared to the top.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh please, she looks ridiculous! If she had traded out the formal skirt for a pair of khaki shorts I’d say she looked perfectly cute but she has wandered into Mary-Kate and Ashley territory. The color story is fine; it’s the crappy shoes with the $2K skirt that makes me cry. And her handbag is ruining the skirt – just look – it’s like when we all had Kenya bags in the 80′s. I have a beautiful silk cami and pair of silver strappy heels that could do that very pretty skirt SO much more justice. sigh…

    • msdamselfly

       I think it’s a great outfit–looks super comfortable

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

It might work if she was wearing the right size, but it’s all a size too big on her. Look at the cami on the model, it isn’t that low or slumpy.

    • petalfrog

      WHAT is on her feet???

    • introspective

suri’s burn book has completely given me life. thanks for sharing.

    • LauraWL

Is she collaborating with Gap? Why is she wearing that top! I tried that on in the store and it’s a stiff linen fabric that’s pretty unflattering. Starchy top fabric with some silkly skirt? Uhm, no. And the shoes are TERRIBLE. And I don’t care what the bag cost. I have a black one like that from 2000 that I carry my magazines in when I go to the beach!

    • MilaXX

I like. This is the type of thing I wear during the summer. I wish she had tucked the shirt in and wore a cute metallic sandal but overall I like the outfit.

    • PaulaBerman

      Where are her boobs?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=703335175 Hannah Shmulsky

I love the components (shoes NOT included), and I’d actually dig the skirt with the cami if not for the sloppy low neckline. Plus it seems to be just slightly tucked into the skirt and that looks frickin’ weird.
That skirt’s delicious, but unless it’s a nice natural fiber (like silk), it’s definitely a heat trap. Sweaty leg nightmare!

    • GorgeousThings

That must be why you canafford an Hermès cuff.
And the St. Pierre. Girl needs a bra. It would take 10 years off her. And the shoes are tragic

    • CQAussie

Actually I liked the cami and maxi combo as well as the colours but the shoes just ruin it, really…

    • granddelusion

This woman has no fashion sense.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I can’t with this. Green and purple together will always make me think Barney. I understand you have a young kid, but this is taking it too far, Katie!

    • makeityourself

      Thank you so much.

    • Jennifer Hejtmánková

When is everyone going to realize that this woman has zero fashion sense?  Zero.  Not saying I’m any better, but I’m not a celeb either.  Wouldn’t take much to have someone come in every once in a while and go through her wardrobe and make up outfits or something.

    • DCSheehan

What’s she going for here? Hippy chic? It’s an awful mess. Her clothes look like they’re melting off her. That cuff looks like something that would get you booted off Project Accessory.

    • nancylee61

I agree 100 percent! Love that skirt!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I think it wouldn’t have been so bad had it not been sloppily executed.  I love the skirt.

    • Judy_S

I like it, except I think the skirt is too long. It’s just a lot of fabric. I love the cuff with the casual clothes.

    • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

Credit where credit’s due: she looks surprisingly cute, considering her past fashion transgressions. Alas, those shoes are not helping.

    • Candigirl1968

It totally works (although she needs to take up the straps). It’s a good breezy girl about town outfit.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Good god with all the money in the world, THIS is how she chooses to present herself???  Top to toe, hideous.  Nothing matches, nothing fits, and those slippers are disgusting.  Bleah.

    • snarkykitten

she looks so much happier without her ball & chain around. Guess he’s too busy promoting that ridiculous movie of his

    • nannypoo

She should spend a little more and get a better outfit.

    • AthenaJ

Damn you, Tom Cruise! You’ve somehow turned Katie Holmes into an aging hippie!

    • getouttadodge

First picture, I thought she was wearing Ugg (UGH) boots.

    • M Carlson

I like each item separately, but not together

    • guest2visits

Agree – thought the skirt and top and shoes not really attractive together. And I hate tops that are so saggy and flappy and barely
attached to the wearer.  That’s alot of coin and effort to achieve such a sloppy, careless look.
That said; I like the bangle, bag, and necklace.

    • bluefish

Contrived, self-conscious, and ugly combo of things that don’t go together — from cuff to sandal to camisole and hideous skirt.

    • Call me Bee

I like this.  A gal in summer in the city.  I’d much rather see this kind of outfit than shorty-shorts on anyone anywhere.  KH has a cute Boho vibe here and I love that the colors are different.

    • EEKstl

I love me a good maxi dress.  But maxi skirts?  Not so much. The Vermont Chic doesn’t work.

    • anotherEloise

Her personal grooming esthetic for summer must be: white legs with sunburned arms and chest.

    • elzatelzabelz

Ugh, why does she have a fashion line?

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

what are those things on your feet, miss katie? i would wear the hell out of that skirt and top, though. of course, i’m 35 years older than you and i live in an isolated town, pop. 53, in the mountains.

    • Thathoodwink

Schlumpy. Ugly color combination and crummy shoes.

    • http://grandmassewingcabinet.com/ DrJulieAnn

Well….now that we have a little context, this outfit makes a lot more sense.  My interpretation of it is, “F___ you, Tom.  I’m going to wear whatever I want to wear now!”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

Hated the skirt on first sight and now I know why; it’s her design. Holmes & Yang was a big mistake. Dear Katie, please go back to acting in edgy indie films and leave designing to the professionals!

    • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

I like it. Love the combination of colors, I’d just have the skirt a little shorter and she needs sandals with heels.  Don’t like the bracelet

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FVVEDD2THGTE4ZMRPTS2VN7WVY Joan

whoops – posted in wrong thread
