Jason Wu Resort 2013 Collection

Posted on June 12, 2012

Inspired by artist Mike Libby’s Insect Lab Studio, Jason Wu offers up a collection of colorful, precise, ladylike looks very much in the established Wu mold. Everything is crisp and feminine, with pops of bright colors against blacks, like an exotic beetle or butterfly. It’s ladybug chic, refined, sophisticated and a tiny bit witty. Love the tailored pieces the most., but really, we think the whole collection is a winner.

Very clean and chic. The LBD 6 rows down with the pockets (?) is my fave. He kind of loses me on the formal dresses tho.

    • filmcricket

Agreed. Those final two dresses are like every annoying trend piled into one garment.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I also LOVE that LBD.  But those last two formal gowns are atrocious.

  • I can’t approve of the granny-pantsy looks in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows, but otherwise there’s a lot to love. *wishing that free clothes would get thrown my way*

  • j_anson

Not crazy about that green floral print, but otherwise this is a nice collection.

  • schadenfreudelicious

while there are some covet worthy pieces here (i will take that first coat toute suite!), that final gown is a frankendress if ever i have seen one, just how many design elements has he crammed into one garment?

  • MilaXX

UGH! he had me right up to that last row. I just can’t with the sheer skirts anymore.

  • Yes please. All of it!

  • Love, love, love. Though the latter gowns are kind of clunkers for me, but that might be because I don’t like black lace.

  • Its a great, clean lined, well structured collection of mostly quite wearable pieces, for a wide range of sizes.  It looks like things that can be flattering to a broad group of body types.  I only wish the sheer long skirt over next to nothing, thing would get a stake in its vampiric heart, forever.

    • formerlyAnon

From your mouth to God’s ears.

Failing that, I’ll sharpen the stakes if you can figure out where to plant ’em.

      •  I know its supposed to be ramping up the sexy factor another notch, but clearly, we are not ready to see it, since almost without exception, we are appalled by the results.  Can’t we give this up as a bad job.  And has anyone seen this look in the “real world”?

        • formerlyAnon

Two or three years ago, I saw a modest version on the mom of an arts-magnet-high-school-fashion-design student at the fashion show/gala fundraiser she had chaired. I emphasize modest – it was really a micro-mini body-hugging sheath dress with long sheer overskirt or maybe over dress – no granny panties or other undies were visible.  The overall impression was that she was doing it as a nod to the kids, who took the fashion show very seriously (it was the culmination of 7 months of their work) and wanted the gala to meet their teen ideas of glamor. I came away thinking “Damn, K—– is game!”

I HAVE seen high school students wearing something similar that I don’t hate on kids their age – sheer skirt over hot pants, they give it a punk edge with flat, Doc Martin-esque boots & either leather & zippers or cotton tank top & patchwork/handpainted vest up top.

          •  What a delightful thing to get to see. I’m envious.  The beginnings of creative work are always a wonder to behold.  And if anyone has the license to try this sort of thing, its the very young.
However, with the ladies of shall we say, more experience, it is not something that should be considered without a great deal of careful consideration.

        • holdmewhileimnaked

i probably have seen it, if perhaps a long time ago. i may have even, apologies, worn it. & i bet if i forced myself to go out more, i’d still see it. i’m surprised i dont see it at the market, actually. as an aside, i am in, yes, beautiful downtown silver lake [two words]. so, you know, of coursey course.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i agree w/ you too. strangely, though, for some reason i am really taken by the final dress. i think it’s the colors more than anything. & i think the whole thing would be better sans the same clothing conceit you [& i & everyone else] wish had breathed its last fabric breath, i dunno, long before it drew its first, maybe.

      •  The navy dress in the final row, is a lovely thing, until you get to the sheer gyno curtains.

  • Terence Ng

Wow, I could see Michi-O wearing any of these. Gorgeous.

    •  True Fax!  The FLOTUS would look slammin’ in nearly all of this.

      • Beardslee

I thought of her when I was looking at the collection and thinking how fun it will be to see her in these clothes.
I wish I could afford some of this…oh well, I will enjoy vicariously.

    • gailfl87

The LBD with her hands in the pockets!  Throw an awkward cardi and a wide belt, and she’s set!  I kid because I love…

  • formerlyAnon

Lots of clean, wearable looks. Like most of the first row enormously.  Neither the napkin-fold skirts nor the lace-over-beige are fresh and since I’m not a huge fan in the first place, they don’t do much for me.

  • Spicytomato1

I love pretty much everything except that last row. Fresh and, as Tim Gunn might say, exuberant.

The green floral reminds me so much of a sheath dress my grandmother wore in the 60s. In a good way.

  • tresfabuleux

Shelly-O loves to wear Jason Wu–I’m curious to see which of these pieces she goes for. I can see her in the black/yellow/red striped skirt or that orange sheath, which would look AMAZING on her.

  • Man, I haven’t been a Jason Wu fan, historically, but these are pretty great. Terrific collection and nicely un-fussy (which is often a problem for him.)

  • I don’t like the gowns, but everything else makes me wish I were the 1% and could buy them ^_^

  • snarkykitten

finally a resort collection that actually looks like what a rich gal would wear to a private resort

    • DeTrop

You make a valid point.  Some of the ‘resort collections’ we’ve seen so far look as though the girls are vacationing in some Corporate Suite.

  • snarkykitten

finally a resort collection that actually looks like what a rich gal would wear to a private resort

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

  • quiltrx

I like the effect of the piping that shows up several times.  I like almost everything in the third-to-last and next-to-last rows.

  • aristida_girl

So beautiful, and CLEAN! I love it, especially the tops and dresses with the jeweled collars, the leather skirts in vivid colors, and the lapis motorcycle jacket is really lust-inducing..forever unrequited, but lust nevertheless…

  • call_me_schmeg

    fabu, mr. wu

  • VicksieDo

Can’t wait to see all of these on the First Lady, she will rock them.  GORGEOUS!

  • FabWUlous

  • Lina_bee

The green print screams Von Trapp family, and the last 3 gowns are feh, but on the whole I love this. Especially the orange stripes.

    • kimmeister

Good call on the Von Trapp curtains!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

these are pretty nice, very very wearable. i, oddly & possibly singly, really like that last gown, the black & blue one. the rest of this stuff i think is situated right at the point of likeable by everyone. i still way way way prefer the most recent marc jacobs, rather unbelievably, but thats possibly just me.

here’s a link to insectlab, btw:
as a vegetarian i cant really commend it, but some of the work is beautiful, perhaps best exemplified in CERAMBYCIDAE: SOLLI & some of the butterflies [i cant make myself retype the name, so it’s a cut/paste]. the crab, however, is insupportable.

  • RzYoung

To quote Dumb and Dumber: I like it Ilikeitalot

  • michelle shields

I like most of the pieces but the last row is so last year.

  • norseofcourse

    Love the clothes.
    Hate the spinster aunt hair.
Don’t understand the bulky jacket with hot pants trend.

  • VioletFem

Very chic. My favorite collection by him so far.

  • I adore Jason Wu. Which makes me mad at Target again after the whole mini-collection fiasco.

But, to end positively, I LOVE all the short dresses. All of them.

  • mjude

  • Total win. And I want to be clear with my order: I don’t need the bathings suits, shorts or gowns but one of everything else in a size 6 please. You have the address.
Love the green floral and the second frame with the plaid (windowpane?) four-set. To die. I need the coat because today the rain is here so please make it a rush order.

  • MasterandServant

Love! There is something just so unfussy and clean and wearable in his designs.  I could envision myself in almost everything here-except the swimwear!

  • Love this. Wish I were a super thin, super tall 20 year old so I could pull these pieces off!

  • The bathing suit is hideous, but most of the rest is nice.

  • AlinaValero

blue leather jacket in my closet now, please.

  • Knightley

There are a few of these that just scream “MICHELLE WILLIAMS!  OVER HERE!  WE’RE OVER HERE!”

  • Judy_J

I’m betting we will see a few of these looks on Michelle Obama.

    • Charmella

       Yep…precisely what I was thinking!

  • Christina Brennan

I’ve always been a sucker for contrast piping so I love this collection!

  • I’m not so in love with the last 2 dresses, but this is finally a collection that I really really really like.

  • Jessica O’Connell

“Ladybug chic”…love it. Love the collection and also love that the two pieces I own from his Target collection look like they could possibly fit in with the collection… I suddenly feel so fashionable and it’s all thanks to you TLo! I probably would have completely missed that collection (and possibly Jason Wu altogether) had it not been for you and your blog! 😀 Thanks so much!

  • aimee_parrott

I love everything except the gowns — those look really overdesigned to me, especially the last two.  But I love every single other piece here — very clean and chic.

  • jilly_d

I lust for the white jacket in the fourth row.

  • guest2visits

The micro shorts and granny panties are hideous as always; and some of the designs are very short for me.
But I do love the dresses of the 6th and 7th frames. And the classic coral shift on the 4th frame.

  • fursa_saida

    Love. It.
