Jane Fonda Pops Her Collar

Posted on June 22, 2012

We breathed a sigh of relief at this outfit. And we suspect Jane did as well.

Jane Fonda attends the Premiere Of HBO’s “The Newsroom” in Hollywood, California.

She cut quite the figure on the Cannes red carpet last month, but ultimately, we found most of her getups exhausting to look at because you could tell there was a LOT of infrastructure under those gowns, cinching her in and hiking her up. We think it’s great that the old gal’s still got it and we don’t judge her for wanting to still show if off now and then, but she kept inadvertently sending the message that to look good in your old age requires major smoke and mirrors in order to make you look as young as possible.

What we love about this look is that it looks comfortable and practical and age-appropriate, while still looking pretty chic and sending a somewhat better message: that in order to look good in your old age, you merely need to pick clothes that suit you and style them well, just like at every other point in your life. That’s how Helen Mirren does it and everyone loves the way she looks.

Sure, those pants are gigantic and high-waisted, and we could quibble with the overuse of gold accents, but overall she looks chic, happy, and very pretty, with just a little bit of attitude underneath it all. It’s not a perfect look, but it’s perfect for her.

OMG, I totally thought it was Nancy Reagan and was going to comment about how good her plastic surgeon is…

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1202234220 Corinna Cornejo

Isn’t Nancy Reagan dead? Then, yeah, that’s some fabulous plastic surgery…

        • VicksieDo

No, she’s alive and 90 years old now :-)

          • Diane_Chambers

But Jane Fonda is playing her in Lee Daniels’s next movie, so the comment is all good!

            • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1313126032 Ajuna Ariel Fenty

Lee Daniels is an atrocious director. Ugh!

    • RebeccaKW

      I REALLY want that jacket.

I might quibble about the earrings-with the collar up, she should’ve worn something else, so her hoops didn’t get caught.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I’ll fight you for it, that’s one fabulous jacket!

    • Lina_bee

That is fabulous. She looks like she can breathe. She looks like she could eat a little popcorn without bursting a seam. She looks like she could stand around for a while in those awesome FLATS. And she looks like she could go on Dallas and play a master of old age and treachery. I approve.

She looks fabulous, and the outfit is wonderful for her; glad she’ll be on TV again.

    • moppet

That’s a neat jacket and I want it.

my first thought was Holy Joan Rivers!

      • AnaRoW

Oh please! Joan Rivers would never allow herself to go with that many wrinkles.

        • CozyCat

Which is why Jane looks so much happier than Joan does.

Actually, I love them both for sending the message a “mature” woman can look good and doesn’t have to be invisible.  I mean, does anyone else HATE that cursed “i will wear purple” poem as much as I do?

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I don’t know that I hate that poem, but it certainly has been cited far, far too often.

          • littlemac8

I loathe that poem, she says dripping venom.  I almost faint when I see those women out in purple and red.  I flee in the opposite direction and I’m old enough to be one of them.  Jane looks gorgeous!

        • lamamu

Yes! I LOVE it that Jane Fonda’s face still looks like Jane Fonda’s face. (Of course, she’s had a bit here and there done, but she still looks like herself.)

    • GillianHolroyd

      Easy chic.

    • http://avant-garde-living.blogspot.com/ Jess B

      She looks awesome! <3

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1191498132 Kerrie McLaughlin

She looks fantastic – my minor quibble is that the pants are a tad too baggy. Love the bronzey gold color!

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

I have pants that look just like that. I thought they were going to have a wider hem, but when I put them on after they were shortened, I found that the seamstress had pegged them. Now they look like clown pants and I won’t wear them. Jane shouldn’t either.

    • TomBord

Those seps look like they all could be from different decades yet she makes they look so effortless and hollywood chic. She’s the bomb.

    • joe_tey83

“that in order to look good in your old age, you merely need to pick
clothes that suit you and style them well, just like at every other
      point in your life.”

Such a straightforward thing to do and yet something so many cannot grasp and refuse to accept.

      • Sartorial_She

I’m looking at you, J Lo!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I think that JLo is going to completely resist dressing in an age appropriate manner when she hits her 50’s and beyond, but maybe she’ll surprise me.

          • Candigirl1968

Now you know we’ll be seeing her in what are the equivalent of a series of Tina Turner concert costumes.

    • kimmeister

The pants are a little Golden Girls, but hey, she qualifies!

      LOVE the jacket.

    • MilaXX

Her hair and makeup look a lot better. I like the outfit as a whole, but I’d un-pop that collar and go down a size in the pants.

      • Deb_Lynn

Agreed with the pants. Maybe they used a size higher to really emphasize that baggy look, but if that’s the case, maybe they should’ve bought (hahaha, bought….) different pants to really get that look successfully.
But I agree with you, the outfit as a whole is a gorgeous, summery evening ensemble.

    • Joyce VG

you go Jane. you go.  What an inspiration.

    • rougeort

OMG! She looks like she can move without winning the Most Cacophonous Rip contest!

On a more serious note, wow. So chic, effortless and age appropriate! Snaps up, Miss Fonda.

    • Mary Baumer

bitch does not age the way normal people do.  fab.

      • boweryboy

It’s called a really good plastic surgeon.

        • http://oneblueberry.com/ LaVonne Ellis

          But he missed her earlobes.

          • Qitkat

I’ve heard that ears (and noses) continue to grow for life. It is unfortunate that they look a bit stretched out, but is this something a plastic surgeon can even tackle?

          • FayeMac

I know, I saw an interview of her and those lobes were so distracting and ugly.  Otherwise she looks great.

    • alyce1213

      Cool, effortless, a legend.

    • Rand Ortega

      Love Lady Jane!

    • holdstillnow

Jane Fonda doesn’t tip.  My wife used to cook at a restaurant in Atlanta she brunches at almost ever Sunday and no one ever wanted to wait on her.  It became house policy that the last server to arrive for work got her table.  Apparently people started showing up for work 30 minutes early, which if you’ve ever worked in the service industry, you know just does not happen.

      Anyway, she looks real good.

      • Pennymac

This just chaps my former waitress ass.

    • Lisa

      Beautiful, chic and age appropriate!

    • Judy_J

She looks great…age appropriate and glamorous. Good work, Jane!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      I think she looks great!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1576973112 Patricia Groves Dobrowski

She looks like she’s playing Sandy in the Senior Center’s production of “Grease”.

      • makeityourself

Yes. Exactly! That’s what I would say if I were clever like you. The whole getup looks like a costume to me.

        • ChaquitaPhilly

Duh! Actors are ALWAYS in costume.

    • nancymae

I covet that jacket but I doubt that I have enough life experience to really make it work like Ms. Fonda here.

    • Thathoodwink

She always was, and still is, a gorgeous woman.

    • Qitkat

That’s a gorgeous jacket. I want one now, and when I’m 74 I hope I have this much style.

    • Aurumgirl

What I love about this is its clear those clothes are not “brand spanking new”, they are pieces that she’s probably had for a while, judging by their shape/tailoring.  And yet she makes it all look comfortable and modern.   She looks completely relaxed and happy–that’s what makes her look so attractive.

    • formerlyAnon

      Agree with your sentiments, gentlemen.

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Semi-unrelated. I totally want to see this show. I don’t have HBO but I love Jeff Daniels. Kittens, keep us updated if it is any good.

      • FayeMac

saw a preview of some scenes and it looks really good – there is a thin dark haired british actress who is really kick ass interacting with Jeff Daniels

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

what a knockout!  she is WERKING IT!

    • mjude

its jane & i am bowing down.

    • ccm800

When does she start production on the Nancy Reagan bioflick? She would be perfect.

    • guest2visits

She’s looking beautiful; but I’m trying to figure out what to replace her giant white pants with. Black ? Silver-grey ?
The sandals have to go too.

    • ballerinawithagun

Very classy! I would generally say that style of pants should be worn with a heel, but at her age this is perfect.

    • Candigirl1968

Great outfit. Nice to see something she can breathe in.

    • EEKstl

I would have chosen a more neutral belt but I have to say that jacket looks bitchin’ on her.

    • bluefish

      She looks great!  Love it.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Absolutely agree with everything you said, TLo.
I never thought I would say yea to white high-waisted pants and a gold jacket, but the ole gal looks pretty fab.

    • Nancy Karpen

As an older woman I love that Jane is not out there botoxed and lifted to immobility.  I love her outfit and the pants are perfect.  I too want that jacket!

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

She’s learned what Joan Rivers know; distract attention from flaws with a tasteful hit of bling! That jacket is fabric jewelry.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I love me some huge high waisted pants. WERQ.

    • nancylee61

Glad to see her facelift has softened. She looks more like herself than she did last month.
