Jada Pinkett-Smith in NYC

Posted on June 01, 2012

If we said this was Zoe Saldana we doubt anyone would think otherwise.

Jada Pinkett-Smith out and about in New York City carrying a Valentino bag.

Valentino Studded Leather Tote

In fact, we were operating on the assumption this was Zoe when we were putting this post together, thinking, “We haven’t checked in on Zoe in a while,” only to find out it’s just another shot of Jada, who’s been increasingly high profile lately.

Great outfit, though. Love the blouse, love the jeans, love the shoes. It’s all summer-in-the-city chic and that enormous bag adds an equally enormous amount of kickass attitude, which is what Jada tends to trade in. It also hides the arsenal of weaponry we always assume is on her person, ready to be deployed at any moment when the puny humans get out of line.

The only thing that crosses my mind is that…this is a huge bag.  Just the bag itself must weigh 10 lbs.  If you put anything at all in it, you’d be approaching 20-30 lbs on your shoulder.  Now I know that Jada’s a badass…probably does Pilates…likely bench presses 150….but with her scratch, does she really need to be toting 30 lbs around?  Doesn’t she have people to do that for her?  Otherwise, the only purpose a huge empty bag would serve would be to hid the love handles from the paparazzi.

      • jennifervney

Right?? She could fit in the bag herself!

        • schadenfreudelicious

agreed, the bag is too big when the wearer could climb inside….

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

And I know this makes me sound old, but lugging a big, heavy bag like that is so bad for your neck and shoulders.  OTOH, considering what those shoes are doing to her feet, I’m probably jousting with windmills.

        • blogless

Yes, exactly! That bag is an orthopedist’s dream.

      • MilaXX

Carrying that that bag is likely contributing to her scratch. It’s called the celebrity bag pimp. It’s a planned as these so called out and about moments. You know the publicist calls the paps and let them know she’ll be out and when.

    • ChaCha_70

She’s so perfectly summer chic. Wish I could rock a pair of white jeans like that. And don’t get me started about that bag. Fierce.

    • Sobaika

Ugh, she is so fierce. Loving her more and more.

    • TheOriginalLulu

      She looks badass. Love it.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I do sometimes wish she could lose her most oft chosen accessory, her slightly pinched, disapproving expression. And call me a shallow slut if you want, but I want to know who the redhead in the background is.
I do love the outfit in its entirety, though for me, the jeans are too long.

      • RebeccaKW

He seems to be wearing white socks with his sandals.

        • janetjb

          First thing I noticed.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yikes! I hadn’t seen that. I withdraw my interest, forthwith.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1084733830 Kate Andrews

Looks like Van Gogh. The cell phone is hiding his lack of ear.

            • NinaBoo

              Best. Comment. Ever.

              He does!

            • NC_Meg

I was about to say the same thing minus the very clever ear comment! He even has a hat like the one van Gogh wore in some of his self portraits.

            • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Vella/666619877 Matthew Vella

hahahaha god did you make me lol

          • birkatbaby

I will say, socks with sandals made my mom fall in love with my dad – and 35+ yrs later, he’s still sporting em!

          • RebeccaKW

It’s funny how one little thing can turn a guy from hot to not in a heartbeat.

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

As we are almost daily shown by our esteemed hosts, it’s all about getting the details right.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=678337501 Carla Axtman

Pretty sure that’s Danny Bonaduce. Dude loves him some white socks & panama hat disguises.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Omg, you may be right. Now I’m creeped out.

          • ballerinawithagun

            I agree.

        • butterflysunita

        • http://twitter.com/phreddd F. Eloy Vaughn

Yup, I’d have grabbed some scissors and cut them off his feet myself. Interesting background ginger all the same.

      • Sobaika

You can argue that she’s knowingly playing part of the celeb game, but I don’t know – she’s not on the red carpet or any particular event. Not really required to ‘turn it on’ and smile graciously.

Yesterday someone on the street demanded to know why I looked so sad. If I were to ever find myself surrounded by paparazzi, you’d think me surlier than K.Stew on a bad day.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I grant that you are right in this. I suppose it is unrealistic of me to expect that a celeb will always be “on” when in public view. Lord knows I would not enjoy being consistently hounded I public.

        • MilaXX

I’ve been known to have a bit of bitch face myself. It’s just what happens when I am not actively engaged with another person.

        • Melissa Brogan

I definitely don’t think celebs should feel required to smile at paps on the street. They’re supposed to turn on their happy faces for events they’re getting paid for, not just because they wanted to hit the corner cafe for lunch.

      • BrooklynBomber

        You shallow slut, you.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          Oh, then you’ve met me?

          • BrooklynBomber

It’s nice to be known, isn’t it? ;)

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

              (sly, slightly evil, smile)

      • AudreysMom

Agreed on the expression. She still scares me, even when she’s doing her best Janet Jackson face.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I reckon I’d have a pinched expression if I were walking around NYC in those shoes and carrying a bag the size of which is a significant fraction of my own dimensions.  That being said, she does frighten me a little.

I think the ginger in the background (overlooking the socks and sandals for the sake of discussion) is benefiting somewhat from being out of focus.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

A dear old friend of mine and I used to call them VDBs.  Very Distant Beauties.  On close inspection, not so much.

          • sayonaramrskackleman

Or, in the eternally wise words of Cher Horowitz…

Tai: Do you think she’s pretty?
            Cher: No, she’s a full-on Monet.
            Tai: What’s a Monet?
Cher: It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess.

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

    • Le_Sigh

      Summer fierceness.

    • mozzer0906

She looks fierce, but as kiltdntiltd stated above, she needs to lose the pinched face.

    • Heather M. Moore

Does anyone notice that she missed her belt loop?

      • Stephanie Leach

I figured that she was using her thumb to keep the belt in place as she’d noticed it too late to make the adjustment.

    • RebeccaKW

This looks is fantastic.  She has such a softer face when her hair isn’t pulled back so severely.  I’m not sure about the shoes, though.  Not that I don’t like them, just the cream color of the shoes clashes with the white of the pants.  I’m not sure what other color I would have liked though-we already have turquoise and red happening here.  Black would be too heavy.   Overall, though, minor quibble.

    • Sophie Collier

And escorted by Vincent Van Gogh, using a celphone to hide his damaged ear.

    • SpcilK

The outfit is cute, but my focus goes to how she look like an alien life form. Throw this same ensamble  on Zoe S. and it becomes soft and chic. Jada looks hard and border line emaciated.

    • Imasewsure

Again to me she looks ridiculous… every piece is great (except I hate the shoes) but if this actually had been Zoe, it would have looked chic and effortless but on Jada…. looks forced, pinched (eat something darling) and costum-y… I say crawl in to that big bag Jada…. it’s not working for me….

      • mountainFashionista

I’m with you — I think pretty much everything about this look is awful.

The jeans don’t fit that well, esp. at the top (the length doesn’t bother me, actually)
The shoes are ugly, painful looking, and clashy with the color of the jeans
The size of the bag is ludicrous
The shirt could be cute, but looks sad here

All the love for this from TLo and the minions mystifies me!

        • SRQkitten

Thank you both for saying that! She looks more like Zoe’s mom than Zoe, who I think would make this outfit look much better. I get it, Jada is fierce but that hard look isn’t gonna wear well the older she gets. Just sayin’.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Gotta say, as much as her cheekbones scare me, I love a look that’s 60% bag – and Valentino at that.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

        upvote for your fabulous name!

      • AmandaCathleen

Couldn’t agree more about her cheekbones. The first thing I thought when I saw this was “skull face”. Not cute. This isn’t necessarily a comment on her weight, either—I think it has a lot to do with the big, round sunglasses blocking her eyebrows, and that one wisp of hair making her already-prominent cheekbone stand out even more.

        Cute top though.

    • Susan Crawford

Super summer outfit that looks great on her.

      That. Bag. Shhould. Be. Mine.

(Shortly after this picture was taken, Madonna came by and trampled all those damn hydrangeas.)

      • Sara LaBatt

OMG the Madonna comment slayed me!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

Someone needs to red flag that man’s shoes.

    • Judy_J

I’m not feeling it.  The blouse is too blousy, I don’t like the way the jeans are bunched up at the ankles. And the sunglasses are too big for her face.  Maybe if all these pieces were scaled down a size, I’d like it better.

      • Lina_bee

Such is life for petite women. These items *aren’t* scaled down to fit us, at least not in the US market. All most of us can do is get used to long hems, blousy blouses, and either shopping for glasses in the children’s section or rocking the JackieO lenses. High-end brands typically don’t come in petite sizes, and sure, Jada can afford to get things tailored, but when clothes fit like this one’s whole life, too big is NORMAL. Point is, the problem is with the industry, because I guarantee you that every woman who is 5’0″ in this country either wears too-big clothes as a matter of course or has hers custom made.

        • Snailstsichr

Short women everywhere nod in agreement.

        • Elizabeth Silverstein

I agree with Judy-J. It’s true that clothes are not usually made to fit petite ladies, I have to hem my own pants all the time, but Jada is a ladystar and has an army of folks who can tailor her pants. No excuse for the unsightly cankle slouch.

        • Judy_J

It wasn’t my intention to offend petite women.  I myself am petite, and have been known to shop in the girl’s section for blouses and skirts.  If I had the kind of money Ms. Pinkett-Smith has, I would have a tailor on retainer to alter my clothes to fit.

        • kimmeister

You know what kills me about petite clothes in regular department stores?  They’re all designed for old ladies!  Young, stylish people can be short too!  (I’m actually 5’6″, but have the legs of a 5′ tall person glued to the torso of a 6′ tall person so I need petite pants.)

    • janetjb

Her kids must bring out a little bit of softness in her, but she can say “back off” with no effort at all.

      In her bag?  Whips?

    • Alyssa Shevchuk

I love you TLo, but there’s no way in hell I thought that was Zoe.  She’s literally a foot taller.  With very different cheekbones.

      • MilaXX

But Zoe would wear an outfit like that.

    • Lina_bee

      Jada FTW!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Love everything (although the shoes hurt me, just looking at them), except the sunglasses. They do not work with her face.

    • SusiePamudji

That is a huge bag! She looks casually fierce.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

her nails, how in gods name does she keep those fuckers that long.  are they real?  does she like them that long?  is it just to remind people she could claw them to death if she felt like it?  INQUIRING MINDS NEED TO KNOW

    • MilaXX

She looks cute. That bag will be in my dreams.

    • Spreecord

      1) I want that bag.
      2) Scientologists should refrain from wearing sunglasses that make them look like aliens.

    • Snailstsichr

Both Jada and the bag look fierce.

    • twocee

Hate the shoes and that bag is ridiculous.  You could literally fit the kitchen sink into that thing.

I realize that celebs do not take the subway, but the daily commuter in me is shrieking at the thought of having to deal with someone with that large a bag on the train.

    • CQAussie

Forget weapons, check Diva’s nails!  Those are enough to inflict serious injuries!

    • EEKstl

SHE could fit in that bag!  Good look, tho.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/R3DYATQM2QRPBUMNUW4YISMZ6Q Jane

      What’s up with her nails?

      • LambeeBaby

They look like DeNiro’s nails in Angel Heart.

    • Anathema_Device

I am absolutely in love with that blouse.

She continues to scare the bejeezus outta me.

    • TomBord

her face, bag and shoes say ‘ i havn’t been laid in years’.

    • Beardslee

She looks too small for that enormous bag and those industrial strength shoes.  The scale is off to me.

      • formerlyAnon

Technically, you probably are correct. But it is a look I love and associate with an “I may be little but I am a tough bundle of energy and can dance [or substitute situation appropriate verb] you into the grave and then go take care of my daily shi*t without need of pause for recuperation” vibe.

(edited to actually finish the sentence)

    • Lilithcat

Blouse is fabulous.  Jeans are pretty ordinary.  The bag is way to big (unless she’s using it as a weekender), and the shoes are flat out ugly.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Well deployed day look.  That bag suits her personality to a tee.

    • Sara__B

I like the white jeans and silk top combo, but the shoes and humongous bag are over-the-top on such a petite lady, and those big sunglasses (and pinched lips) don’t flatter her face at all. I hope she’s not as tense as she looks!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

She almost always looks tense to me.

    • granddelusion

I can’t tell if the bag is huge, or if she is just little. Both, probably.

    • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

I’ d love this SO much more if the jeans weren’t puddling around the shoes..a little bit yes, but they just look too long.

She looks great here though, love the hair

      • kimmeister

I will never be able to get behind the ‘skinny jeans super bunched up around the ankles’ look.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

It takes some sheer force of will to carry a bag 1/3 the size of your entire body and look good doing it.

    • pepper76

      Zoe would wear better shoes.

    • sockandaphone

      i want that bag.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Cute look, and easily translatable to the “real world.”

Is it weird that I’m scared of her cheekbones?

    • Candigirl1968

With the shoes, it feels a little “trying too hard.”

    • sk8tfan

I would be hospitalized over the shoes alone, but that’s why one of thousands of reasons why I’m not a celebrity and not paid to wear them. I bow down in gratitude for those who are. She looks pretty, fresh, and fun, and like she’s comfortable and in a good mood. Which is why she’s an actress.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Who cares?  LOVE the bag!  I always wonder at “people on the street” who wear those sky-high cruel shoes….are they actually walking around town in them or just running from a store/restaurant entrance to the ever-present SUV?  I can’t see being able to walk very far wearing those.

    • PeaceBang

Hate the shoes with that outfit and the bag is comically oversized. It looks like she’s carrying a house with her.

    • guest2visits

I think the shoes and the bag are working against each other; even though they’re both studded.
Maybe a different bag or a different pair of shoes.   She still looks great.

    • marilyn

NOrmally I don’t like people displaying their bag as if it were a job.  However, this bag is awesome, and could only be improved if it were in the gorgeous chestnut color in the sample.  She looks mean, as usual.

    • CozyCat

I wouldn’t have mistaken her for Zoe.  Zoe is prettier.

Which is part of what makes Jada so great.  She is a nice looking woman, but not great looking by Hollywood standards.  But she makes up for it with total fierceness.  (an overused word, I kmow, but she personifies it).  In that respect she is a true style role model for us mere mortals.  Even if you are not the most beautiful woman in the room, you can make people THINK you are the most beatiful woman in the room!

Especially if they think you might have a weapon in your bag….

    • a_liking

I love Vincent Van Gogh just chillin in the background there.

… I guess she looks pretty slick too.

    • alyce1213

Just looking at her gives me anxiety.
      Nice blouse, though.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

She’s only twice the size of that bag. Those are some fierce shoes, though.

    • ccm800

      this is cute.

    • BayTampaBay

Where did her shoes come from?  I love those shoes.

    • Tom Sprick

Great outfit but that bag is ridiculously too large.  Honestly, what the heck would you ever need to put in there unless you were heading to the beach for the day?  Or homeless?  *and Zoe is waaaaay more pretty than Ms. Smith*

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

      she is in great shape!

    • formerlyAnon

If the pants didn’t pool about her ankles, I’d call this a WERQ.  It’d turn my head on the street. I love little badass women, which is what she looks like here, unlike her usual look which (to me) combines Trying Too Hard with High Strung.

    • http://twitter.com/shegotgame Megan Ann Wilson

I want those McQueen shoes so bad. Go Jada!

    • bellafigura1

Giant, red, aggressive, studded?  That bag is hideous and soo 2 years ago.

    • Allison Woods

I’m sorry, the oversized shit just accentuates how thin she is. Which, by the way, has gone past “badass” and is veering into “ill” territory. Jada, my awesome warrior princess, PLEASE EAT A SANDWICH.

    • Trisha26

TLo you have got to be kidding! The proportions are off on everything – sunglasses, bag, jeans and shoes are all too large, especially on her emaciated frame. She looks ridiculous.

    • http://fray.slate.com/discuss/forums/3945/ShowForum.aspx nancykelley

Those aren’t finger nails – they’re TALONS! She’ll scratch your eye out!

    • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

Once again her tiny five foot self knocks one out of the park with perfectly proportioned choices.  We peasents must learn from her.

    • SapphoPoet

I think that bag is proportionately too big for Jada, who probably weighs 90 pounds soaking wet (if that). Also, her nails look like they could be weapons.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Her head looks weird here.  She looks like she has a preying mantis head.  Why is that?

    • RzYoung

      I love that bag.
