Jada Pinkett-Smith in Lanvin

Posted on June 07, 2012

Jada has a talent. She can turn a sheer, floaty, pink cocktail dress into something like armor.

Jada Pinkett Smith is spotted leaving the ‘Today Show’ in New York City in a Lanvin dress paired with Nicholas Kirkwood sandals.

Then again, she looks ready to kick some ass no matter what she’s wearing. Nothing wrong with being a warrior (shooting down the walls of heartache, bang bang. Haha. Now that’s totally stuck in your head, assuming you’re over 35), but is this really working on her? A floaty, pink cocktail dress? Wouldn’t you automatically assume not? If you were somehow hired as her stylist and were presented with this dress, wouldn’t your first impulse be “Mmmm. Let’s look at something else?”

And yet, we think she looks pretty great here. Don’t really love the shoes, but the rest of it is working like gangbusters.

      I am the warrior!

I’m under 35 but know that song and have it in my head too.

do like softer Jada so much more than harsh Jada....CBCJobGetPosition.notlong.com

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

It’s not been a good shoe day.

      • janetjb

I was going to say that!

Aren’t women allowed to wear pretty shoes?

    • charlotte

Don’t like the shoes,do like softer Jada so much more than harsh Jada.

      • JaneDC

This is softer? My first thought was God this woman is HARSH!

        • charlotte

Guess I should specify: softer on the Jada harshness scale.

    • introspective

so loving this! its the shorter cousin to the number nicole wore at cannes. and she’s rocking it for sure!

    • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

Put her in some gladiator flats and send her into the arena!!!

      • carolynmo

        ha! Yes!

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Wow, sorry you don’t like the shoes. I was actually appreciating the fact that these are close to affordable!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1155227497 Ganell Dunn

        $1,115.00 is affordable.

        • Lilithcat

          My checkbook says “no”.

    • girliecue

Thank goodness that unlike the runway version, she chose to keep the curtains closed over the china cabinet.

      • Spicytomato1

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. Only not so euphemistically.

        • girliecue

I was having bizarre flashes of diplomacy all day.

      • Maddie_Faddenoid

The first thing I thought when I saw the runway version was ‘Ugh. Granny panties’, not ‘Cover your nether regions, dear’. In the age of up-skirt shots thsi is how desensitized I’ve become.

    • Lilithcat

It may be the angles from which the photos were taken, but she looks very oddly proportioned.  Even aside from that, I don’t like this, but at least she’s not showing granny panties!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=678337501 Carla Axtman

That woman is sporting some serious guns.

The dress is indeed very pretty on her….but she looks oddly uncomfortable in it…or her own skin…in this series of images.

      • megohd

I agree … it’s her skull-like face, in my opinion.

        • Jennifer Coleman

I’ve been in denial about it so far, but with this series of photos, it really looks like she’s had cheek implants. There’s been a lot of internet speculation for a few months, but her face looks really altered here. Why such a pretty woman would do this to herself, I have no idea. Hollywood really does a number on actress’ heads.

          • joything

I have to agree – tho I thought it might have been a cheek-suction of some kind.  Somethin’ ain’t right.

          • megohd

I so agree. I have made comments about it more than once and people have scolded me that her cheekbones have always been that high. Maybe so (I disagree) but her cheeks have never been that sunken.

            • Spreecord

Word. The last few weeks the lower half of her face has looked like it’s imploding.

          • introspective

I also have to agree. my friend and i said the same thing. high cheekbones were something JPS was blessed with naturally. look at her old different world era photos and youll see. however what you wont see are the kiwi sized cheeks that she now has sitting atop those bones. If that’s a desperate move to stave off aging, its ironic, since its now made her look like the universal sign of death, a skull, as megohd has noted…

          • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

I’d say everything above and below her eyes looks bizarrely plastic, pasted on and not quite human, like a bad job of photoshop.  Makes it hard to judge the dress.

    • Anathema_Device

I like the whole look, even the shoes. I do love a patterned shoe, though. It is a great way to add some interest to an outfit.

I think she is just an intense, harsh, clenched looking woman. I mean that in the nicest way…really.

Oh, and i think she could benefit from the softening effect of a side part or some long bangs.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

For me, not totally working. When viewing her at an angle, she looks great in this. The straight on view, however isn’t making it for me, because of where and how the gathering is done across the chest. And she gets props for adding more layers to the skirt so it isn’t so insanely sheer.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

I’m SO glad she lined that skirt — I hate visible granny panties even more than I hate nude pumps.

I’m not sure the shoes here are the best choice for the dress.  They seem too edgy for the pink floatiness.

Let’s throw them on my nude-shoe-bonfire, too.  Then we can roast marshmallows over it and feed Jada until her cheeks fill out.

    • formerlyAnon

I bet if I saw her moving, rather than standing at attention with her shoulders back as if she were in some sort of posture-correcting harness, I’d think she looks great. Here, not so much.

Making those ridiculous verging-on-tacky shoes look decent IS an accomlishment, though.

      • Sartorial_She

“…standing at attention with her shoulders back as if she were in some sort of posture-correcting harness…”

        THIS! What’s up with that?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1576973112 Patricia Groves Dobrowski

Exactly!  That’s what I finally noticed – she always stands shoulders back, spine curved, chest jutting outward, and it makes her look like she’s got armor on underneath whatever she’s wearing, even when we can see halfway down her sternum.  Adds to the thinking that something’s wrong in the Smith household – she’s so tense ALL THE TIME.

    • GorgeousThings

I like the shoes, surprisingly. I think she looks great, considering she looks like about to bust an artery. That woman is wound tighter than an old Timex watch.

    • Lina_bee

The bodice suits her beautifully. The rest…well, she’s working the hell out of it, regardless.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I think she’s looking drawn and more severe than fierce as she ages. Small, thin women tend to do that. Think Nancy Reagan. It isn’t pretty. I think she’s trying to overcome the scrawny and severe thing with a floaty pink dress, and instead of softening her, it just looks like she’s in somebody else’s dress. She needs to embrace her Warrior Queen (not Princess) looks and get down with the armor already.

      • TheOriginalLulu

Yes, agreed that her face seems a little rougher as she ages. This could be helped greatly if she would only allow herself to gain 10-15 pounds. I know that’s unthinkable in Hollywood, but she’s so slim that she would STILL be slim with the added weight and her face would look much softer.

      • kimmeister

The super angular earrings aren’t helping either.

      • 3boysful

That’s what I keep telling myself–at least my facial fat will keep me from getting drawn & lined.  So I’ll look better than the super skinnies when we’re all 85.  Is that a win?

    • http://twitter.com/Mylynka Mylynka

song. stuck. in. head. cannot. focus. on. dress.  BANG! BANG!  I AM THE WARRIIIORRRR!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She needs to refer to herself in Cannes in that blue dress and wash, rinse and repeat.  She is looking severe and downright scary in these pictures, and that dress does nothing to change that.

    • glennethph

Am I misrembering what she looks like or she’s had work done?

    • jw_ny

This is a good combination of hard, soft, and edgy for her….suits her style/personality to a T.

and, thanks TLo…now that song IS stuck in my head.  ;oP

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

GodDAMMIT, that song is so stuck in my head.

    • Trisha26

I love that it’s not the see-through with the black panties, but she looks mis-proportioned (assume it’s the photography angle) and unattractively gaunt.

    • MilaXX

I like the entire look, shoe included. She’s one of the few ladies to line a sheer dress ad not make it look heavy or bulky. Jada & Chris Rock on the same day. They really are pimping that Madagascar movie.

and yes, I totally have an earworm now.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

she always looks like an absolutely furious skull on legs. it’s a pretty dress, the shoes arent bad either, not really.

i had no idea, btw, what is shooting down the walls of heartbreak & i am definitely past the proper age. so i looked it up & it’s what, a song by the inexplicable mother of kids by richard hell & ray davies? her? oh heavens, i dont need to be reminded. isnt she married to, what, who, tennis player? furious tennis player of my misspent youth? or am i thinking of another inexplicable person entirely?

      • Scarlet39

Yes!  It’s a song called The Warrior by Patti Smith and Scandal.  She was married to John McEnroe.  The video for the song is horribly cheesy and unintentionally hilarious.

        • formerlyAnon

“PattY SmYth”  Patti Smith, an entirely different person.

[Forgive me for being pedantic. But long ago & far away, I naively and desperately wanted to BE Patti Smith, and had never heard of Patty Smyth.]

          • BrooklynBomber

Did you read “Just Kids”? (And don’t feel bad – I don’t know PattY SmYth, either!)

            • formerlyAnon

I have, found it oddly heartwarming and heartbreaking from the place in life in which I now am. I am saving it to re-read once all the young people are out of my house.

            • BrooklynBomber

I didn’t really follow her / her career back then, but I did like the book.

      • formerlyAnon

I don’t know by whom she has had kids, but she is married to McEnroe.  For a long time now, too.  The paths we follow in life . . .

      • PeaceBang

“An absolutely furious skull on legs” is the best line I’ve heard all day. *dying*

    • M_E_S

Her face is getting SCARY thin.  It’s starting to freak me out every time I see her in pictures.

    • Imasewsure

I think she looks awful all of the time but I’m convinced now that it’s the hair… she’s too gaunt to wear long hair… better to go sassy short doo… in other words, better to look like a women with short hair than a drag queen with long hair!!

    • Lisa Dugan

This is really great on her.  So glad she opted for lining it.  These dresses often make a person look to chesty but she’s perfectly petite for it.  The belt is great and she looks fabulous.

    • Caaro3

      Oy vey.  Not her again.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1155227497 Ganell Dunn

And heart to heart you’ll win.. if you survive the warrior.

    • TieDye64

Mmmmm, I dunno. The side shot looks good, but straight on it looks awkward and boxy.

Thanks for the earworm, guys! Dammit.

    • http://twitter.com/danmacsek Danielle Sekikawa

Oh my!  I cant get that song out of my head now!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Whenever I see Jada Pinkett Smith she looks as if she will physically snap in two anyone who crosses her…so I’m going to say, why, Ms. Pinkett-Smith, you look lovely today, and then I’ll scuttle home.

    • gabbilevy

I’m just glad I can’t see her granny panties.

    • newleaf1

A cocktail dress for the Today show?  Context, people, context….

    • janetjb

The dress looks surprisingly good on her, but I liked the color better on Nicole Kidman.

    • Judy_J

      She certainly has good posture.

    • kittenwithaquip

I get that good posture is important, but why does Jada always look like she has a stick up her arse? I have a hard time getting past her grim facial expressions and ramrod straight poses to even notice her clothes. Relax, girl! You’re the star, not the bodyguard.

    • PeaceBang

I wish she would just come out as a man. And that is one BAD wig.

    • nannypoo

Isn’t she looking just a bit gaunt? It’s like she had her face lipo’d.

    • ballerinawithagun

I love the whole look. I’ve looked at a similar pair of shoes. Love that they put a lining in so the horrible granny panties don’t show. She is just at the age where she needs to keep just a few pounds on so that she doesn’t look scrawny.

    • PeaceBang

YES. She’s had cheek implants. That’s what it is.

    • alyce1213

I can’t look at her face anymore. I can’t take her military posture.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

She may be a warrior, but she is beginning to look like a very gaunt one.  I know she’s proud of not eating much, but really…

    • http://twitter.com/GuidosDaddy Jason M. Galloway

I hope she can handle all those foot long daiquiri slushies she has to carry at Caesar’s during her 3-11 shift in the big room.

    • melanie0866

      Love the shoes.

    • trisker

I think this dress makes her shoulders and chest look weird.  Maybe it’s the way she’s standing.

    • http://twitter.com/Kerry_McC Kerry McCombs

I’m so sick of Jada! No more!

    • judith traherne

How in God’s name are her boobs so uplifted when she’s clearly not wearing a bra?

    • Sophie Collier

Good call!  It’s visually giving her boobs a lift and its a great length on her.  I think she looks really good!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love it! The juxtaposition of the hard and soft with the leather belt and the chiffon-y dress is perfect. The shoes should be taken out back and burned, but otherwise I love the look.

    • Spicytomato1

The shoes look better close up. From far away they look like a craft project but upon closer inspection they look more sophisticated than that. It probably doesn’t help that Jada’s look too big on her.

    • Fordzo

Has she had her cheekbones beefed up?  Or has she just lost some youthful “padding” as she gets older?

    • 3boysful

I actually DO like the shoes.  But I wonder what the dress would look like either unbelted or with a more delicate belt.

    • schadenfreudelicious

She just looks so gaunt and pulled tighter than a drum, just look at that second photo of her….i cant get past it….

    • Connie Harbor

What’s going on with (or in) her left armpit?

    • Anne Lucchesi

She looks lovely in this, it’s that iron spine and shoulders that makes it look like armor. Girl has a poker for a backbone.

Which is refreshing, compared to your average starlet nowadays.

    • KateMaryC

Before she wears anything else, she needs to eat a sandwich.

      • MikeW_PHX

         or 5

    • tinyredlocks

OK, it totally is stuck in my head. Thanks, TLo. Now I have to go listen to some music I like to get this out of my head. I am the warrior! Damnit!   :-)

    • jmorino08

Her face just looks so harsh. It kind of ruins the whole look!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

appropriate lining = WERQ  — heart to heart, she wins.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Damn it, you two! I will be humming that all day.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

She’s been killing it on the RC lately.

    • Monabel

The belt cuts the dress exactly in the middle, which always looks like a mistake.

    • andreawey

hate the dress, especially the top weird gathering thing and the awful dusty rose? color. Of course Jada always looks hot but that dress is not! (hey I made a rhyme:)

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJHCEFC7S5WYITH3D5ORYGS56I amye

Why does her head look so big?  Why is she always sticking that chest out too much lately?  Does she want everyone to know hers don’t droop with age?

And those shoes are great!  The dress… not so much.  (The color’s pretty on her, though)

    • Markatha

I’m pretty much over the Pinkett-Smith’s.  After they began to foist their obnoxious kids on everyone I lost interest & love.  Really ?Is this the 100th post of her in the last month or what?  Next.

    • http://www.thechipsterdiaries.blogspot.com/ Jess

if she wants to wear a floaty pink girly dress then this is the one for her. I think people should wear what they want, as long as they make it work for their looks/personality.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

The shoes are the best part of that outfit!  Love them.  The dress – that is just not her dress.  It makes her shoulders look like a linebacker’s.  She’s incredibly muscular, for such a little thing.  The rest of it is just too Wonder Woman for me.

    • lrhoff

Isn’t that morning show?  Wouldn’t something a little more “morning” and less evening cocktail been a wiser choice?  I’m not lovin’ it.

    • GTrain

I think it works for her. Her poses are just kind of bad.

    • RzYoung

      I really like this look

    • kmk05

      Her posture is amazing.

    • http://twitter.com/moodring54 Rachel

She needs to work on giving good face in pictures. Drawn, haggard, and severe is a good look for no one, and I KNOW she doesn’t look like that irl.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

She looks very skinny and what did she do to her face? The dress is a pretty color.

    • Call me Bee

The dress is really pretty and I am so glad she chose to skip the granny pants.  The shoes are a bit unexpected, so I like those, too.  But gee–her stance makes me think she’s ready to administer a serious ass-whoopin’…
Relax a little, honey.  You look great

    • stoprobbers

I think she looks gorgeous. Softer looks like this work for her — especially with all the pleating — because her body is so strong and lean. The contrast between her physicality and the floatiness of the dress give her a really beautifully feminine look. Plus the hair is PERFECT.

    • Aurumgirl

I think the model makes it look far more like armour that Jada does.  The dress improves when you take away the see-through undie panel and the Eagle of The Reich necklace.

    • Judih1

Maybe because she is so tiny physically she feels the need to dress so amazon like.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZFKRECRF5BOBWB4RXAJGI4D6KA mmc

      More Jada!  More Jada!

    • guest2visits

This looks great on her and much better than the nighty on the model.  I am convinced now, however… she’s done something
surgical to her face. Maybe I’m the last one to figure that out.

    • BazoDee

I don’t like it -it looks too round peg-square hole

    • nancymae

Her cheeks look like they cut glass. That hollow beneath them is intense.

    • EEKstl

      I am the warrior…oh, where was I?

She looks great, wish she wouldn’t puff her chest out so much, but I quibble.

    • Candigirl1968

I like the shoes you two showed us better than the ones Jada actually wore (a bit busy).
My first thought was that she looked like one of the Amazonian women from Wonder Woman’s Paradise Island.

    • marilyn

The color should work, and she had the good sense to wear the dress with a lined skirt.  But…..She looks too mean to wear a floaty pink cocktail dress.  She looks like she might pull out her sword and slice off someone’s head.

    • snich11

She is one bizarre looking woman. Don’t understand what you’re seeing when you say she’s looking great” at ALL!

      • guest2visits

I have to not look at what she’s doing to her face, in my assessment.

    • amyfromnj

      She scares me.

    • Louise Bryan

Given that warrior face, I think the shoes are the best part of her getup.  The dress does have sort of an Amazonian echo, though.

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

      she’s fierce.

    • Stubenville

Thank-you Jada for having your dress lined. I’m sure you have lovely undergarments, but I’m glad you chose not to share them with us (unlike half of the rest of Hollywood.)

    • Beth G

I find her cheekbones very scary.

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

she’s got to stop sucking on lemons before leaving the house.

    • sunnycalif

Sooo tired of her!  And her kids.
