In or Out: Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung

Posted on June 25, 2012

We weren’t really on fire over Zoe’s last appearance here. The look intrigued us, but we were taken aback by it just a little. And while we think we might love this outfit, we’re still left with the same impression we got last time: girl is flirting with the cray-cray lately when it comes to fashion. We may be witnessing a Sevigny turn in the making.

Zoe Saldana attends Prabal Gurung Celebratory Party.

Prabal Gurung Resort 2013 Collection

Nicholas Kirkwood for Prabal Gurung Quadruple Strap Pump

That’s certainly … something alright. Something that makes us think of Alexis Carrington doing a tap routine. Which, upon further consideration, we are ready to declare awesome.

She’s always been a risk-taker, of course. That’s why we love her so. But for whatever reason, and after looking over her last few appearances, we can’t shake the feeling that she’s feeling the need to up her game. Chic is still the primary goal, but “talked about” definitely seems to be gaining importance.

Don’t mind us; we’re just reading the red carpet tea leaves.  We really like the look. It took a second to get used to it, but she’s pulling it off and we love that she’s flexing her fashion muscles a little bit lately. She’s shooting for Swinton. Attagirl.

I feel like the bow was a bridge too far.

    • jmorino08

I agree. It looks more chic on the model with the black belt.

      •  Love the shoes.  No opinion on hair and makeup.  I’d give her an “in” – not an

      • Judih1

Yes that bow is taking the look into Twee Territory. A black belt and different shoes and this would’ve been a WERQ for me

      • Samantha Irene

Don’t mind the bow – think it would be better in black – but still IN for me.

    •  Totally agree!

      • carolynmo

Me, too. I’m not feeling this at all.

  • G

I can’t quite figure out what the print is on the shorts… ??  Is it shoes??  That could make all the difference.. do love the top and shoes that are on her feet.

  • A. W.

I want to love it, since unusual shapes are so interesting, but this is really too disjointed and strange to give a thumbs up to. She should have worn that fabulous top with very simple LONGER shorts to make her torso look long and slender, and a colorful heel. OUT.

    • lifetime_student

I agree. The top with that peplum needs something longer on the bottom.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I would not have paired that top with those shorts.  Each piece is cute separately (or the shorts with the top as they were on the model), but together they just don’t add up – the proportions are off somehow.  In the way the shorts were presented by the designer, the waist is dropped and belted several inches below where the belt sits on the peplum top.  I think that is what is throwing this off.  Perhaps if she took her hand out of the shorts pocket, I might change my mind.  Love the shoes.  No opinion on hair and makeup.  I’d give her an “in” – not an IN.

    • I agree, the top is lovely but too puffy for shorts, longer pants or even a pencil skirt may have helped. And the bow is not my favourite detail either.

      • I also agree – the proportions are all wrong here.

  • JasmineAM

The way it’s styled on the model is superb! I think Zoe looks cute, but the belt needs to go, in favor a black one sans bow. The shoes are super-fugly.

    • call_me_schmeg

i’m on board except for than damn ribbon candy bow. still, IN.

  • norseofcourse

That the top is very white, while the shorts look to be more of a cream color, is making my eyes twitch.
Along with the fact that the whole thing’s kinda ridiculous.

  • Cray-cray indeed. We I first saw the thumbnail, I though “nuts, this is an out” but larger it looks better. I don’t like it, to tell the truth, but I cannot say she looks ugly, wrong or anything. So it’s an IN by default.

  • DeGuz

    oh no, no, no, no.

  • RebeccaKW

In.  I think I would hate it on anyone else.  And I’m not totally in love with it, but I do like it.  Maybe a different belt would have been better.

  • I love both pieces, but I’m not sure about them together.
However, she looks good so I have to give her an In. Another example of how this lady can wear things I would hate on someone else and make me like it.

  • StelledelMare

Out. Either she should’ve gone with the outfit on the left or the one on the right. I don’t like the mix of both.  Also those shoes are ridiculous on their own.

    • Judih1

I agree with everything you said -OUT.

  • In_Stitches

You know how generally on the runway, looks are paired a bit too matchy-matchy and you have to really dissect them to figure out how to wear them?  This looks like a runway presentation.  Oddly enough, I like to ‘runway’ (okay, look book) presentations much better.  Great separates that don’t work together-OUT.

    • AthenaJ

You gave voice to exactly what I was thinking.

  • leave_Blake_alone

The bow’s a bit much, but this is still IN.

  • unbornfawn

OUT! Nothing belongs together in this outfit.

  • nelybel

IN.  The overall look works for me….on her.

  • petalfrog

She’s simply too skinny for an outfit like this. It looks like the shorts are falling off of her.

  • Out. liked the look with pants on the model, but the shorts aren’t working for me.

  • charlotte

    Giant case of whoopsie!

  • NC_Meg

OUT. A scrolldown WTF if there ever was one. And would it have killed her to put some effort into the hair and makeup?

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  I like both pieces, but not together.

  • Call me Bee

I  like it.  It’s unusual, but she was smart not to pile on a lot of big jewelry, and her hair is perfect.  She looks cute and summery and appropriate for the occasion.
    Oh. IN!

  • Larkin21

I like the pieces separately but not together. In fact, together I didn’t even think I could like them separately. Seeing them paired appropriately on the models is the only thing that made me think “okay, that’s how they could work.” As is, I’m sad to say: OUT.

  • TieDye64

Oy, I really can’t. That top? With those shorts? Nonononononooooo. Shoes, minus the hockey puck stuck to the bottom, are kind of cool.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I like each of the pieces, but not together.

  • Vaniljekjeks

  • MilaXX

IN!  I don’t know how, but I think she’s working it.

  • I am torn but OMG those shorts. So full of no.

  • Monabel

    No, does not work.

  • littlemac8

OUT – ridiculous and I love me some Zoe!

  • AlexisPayne

It’s not working. That top doesn’t work with the shorts, the shoes don’t work, and is there a bow in her hair?

  • kimmeister

I don’t think shorts should ever be paired with a peplum top, even though I like this particular top.  Out.

  • Lina_bee

IN. She’s hitting the edges of Swintonia, and it’s FUN. Plus, the expression on her face makes me think she’s having a blast screwing with people’s expectations. (As an aside, from IMDB it looks like she’s in the middle of filming something pretty heavy, so maybe this intentionally cheery.)

  • Anna Tree

    Love the top. IN

  • I like all of the pieces individually. The top especially is really cute, but it looks so much nicer with the full-length pants the model’s wearing. With the shorts, the proportions are thrown off, and a top like that is all about proportion. I’m glad she’s still making bold selections, but for me this particular one is OUT.

  • hmariec19

I wish the peplum wasn’t so… peplumy. OUT.

  • joe_tey83

     OUT! It’s ridiculous.

She’s shooting for Sevigny, not Swinton.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Eh, I’m not fond of the silhouette. Even Swinton would look bad in it. OUT.

  • melanie0866

out.  Tap pants = always a bad idea if not tap dancing.

  • kingderella

the proportions are ever so slightly off, and the whole look is more rihanna than saldana. but still, IN, i guess.

  • Love the top; only she could make that bow work.  But the shorts are too much for me.

  • AmandaCathleen

I really like both pieces separately (especially the shorts), but together the proportions are off. OUT.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Not loving the shorts necessarily, but all in all it’s a good look. IN.

  • The proportions seem just a little bit off, but she looks better in it than 99.9% of the rest of womankind.

    • Agree. The only reason this could even remotely be considered OK is because she has a model body and attitude. Otherwise, just no.

    No Way
    Nuh uh

    • charlotte

      •  Thanks. How could I have forgotten the French?

  • Rokesmiths

In! I can’t think who else could pull this off, but she is.

  • Outfit is OUT, but those shoes are SMOKIN’ HAWT.

  • out

  • MsKitty

Even she can’t make this getup work.  OUT.

  • Out. I just can’t with the shorts.

  • MightyMarshal

I love that you have turned Sevigny into a verb.

  • YolandaHawkins

    Ridiculous!  Out!

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  I just don’t like the shorts.  Or maybe it’s the combination of that top and those shorts.  Whatever, it’s not coming together for me.

  • I think the pretty hair and makeup and nice shoes  and the fact that she is so much prettier than Chloe give her more room to operate. Also Zoe looks like she has a sense of humor about fashion and Chloe kind of gives off this uber serious vibe. I think if people can laugh at themselves they can get away with more.  In definitely for me

  • Judy_J

    I like it.  IN.

  • belfebe

OUT.  I like the top, the bottom and the shoes.  I just don’t like them together.

  • Out! No on those kulocks!

  • introspective

Something about this seems twee. maybe its the bow on that belt. But with the shoe and the short it makes twee somehow look edgy.

And furthermore, with the fierceness that is Saldana, somehow an outfit that would sear my eyes seems just cute enough to merit an in with a small i.

  • PaulaBerman

The top is something that could look cute. The shorts are hideous. Together they are atrocious. OUT.

  • mjude

IN.  bless her for dressing for the extreme heat.

  • Sally Brownson

Out. The top and the shorts just don’t go together.

  • Out-o

  • Absurd and not in a fabulous way. OUT.

  • Snailstsichr

Out. The top is so high-waisted it looks like she has miles of torso. Since she doesn’t look that way in anything else, I blame the clothes.

  • j_anson

Out. I love the top, and I… could live with the shorts, but they don’t look good together.

  • NurseEllen

She should have kept that mega-cute top paired with the black slacks, or at least black shorts.  As it is: OUT.

  • Kate4queen

Out-the two pieces are fine by themselves but don’t work together for me

  • demidaemon

OUT. There is too much going on here. She would have been better served by using the runway versions as a guideline.

  • greyhoundgirl

The shininess of the top makes it look almost waitress to me.  But, yes, there is some fabulousness in the craziness.  So in…no, out, no, in—okay, might as well be amused instead of bored–IN.

  • Out. Sorry. I love her, but no.

  • DCSheehan

Out. I’m ready to commit her based on this outfit.

  • Alisa Rivera

    Holy shit, NO.

  • Noshmek

Love the top.  Love the shorts.  Add the shoes, and you have something to which even a Vulcan would have an negative emotional response.  OUT.  And when the hell is the new Star Trek movie coming out anyway?

  • I like the top. I do not like shorts like that. Shorts are meant to be worn to the beach or while doing yard work. If you want something short for the red carpet, then wear a short skirt. Fancy shorts just look silly. And those shoes are ridiculous. Out.

  • altalinda

    Out, I’m sorry to say.

  • momogus

    O. U. T.

  • judybrowni

the top is minnie mouse, but even a cartoon character wouldn’t have paired it with those shorts and shoes.

not a crazy paring so much as random: looks like she closed her eyes, and stuck her hand into the free clothes closet and chanted ‘eeenie meenie miney mo’ and grabbed whatever came to hand.

    • Pennymac

      Agreed. OUT.

  • marilyn

In.  It fits the occasion and she looks fine in it.  It is an unusual outfit to wear, it fits her well, and she is beaming.

  • ballerinawithagun

I love the top! She looks great in shorts but I don’t like the way the print works on the fabric. But I’m going with In because she looks so cute & summery!

  • I love it! IN

  • ccm800

Out – please – need ever ask?

  • I’m leaning towards out. The pieces just don’t seem to go together for me.

  • Beardslee

out.  that top needs something simpler to go with it.

  • TheLaurenJean

  • formerlyAnon

I like each piece separately, but I have to say out to the combination. Possibly because I am not fashion forward enough, but because the ensemble has a “failed tap pants costume for the chorus” feel to me, and the pattern on the shorts make them look home sewn, somehow, I just can’t.

  • Out. These two things, the top and the shorts, do not belong together on the same body. I don’t care whose body it is. I do like the shoes, however.

  • TheOtherChristina

I really like both runway looks, but I’m not keen on the way Zoe paired the pieces. Maybe if the shorts were black or navy print instead of the off-white?

I’m tempted to call this an out, but she is just beaming with joy, which I confess pushes it across the line for me. IN.

  • Nonnah

In, but the proportion seem a touch off.  Like she’s long waisted.

  • bellafigura1

Out, she’s had some beginner’s luck, that’s all.  And harumph, you guys let her hang out in the same sentence as Swinton and Blanchett last week.

  • clairellis

    Out. Just plain out.

  • kikisayshi

Love the individual pieces, but as an ensemble it is totally OUT!

  • Out. Too much business at the hips.

  • I like the top, and I like the shorts.  Just not together.  She’s working it well, but it’s OUT for me.  Oooh–Two OUTS in a row.  Come on, Zoe.

  • Sara__B

The proportions are all wrong. The shorts are down around her hips and the top is high-waisted. The separates are fine on their own (except for that twee belt with a bow), but together they’re OUT.

  • I love Zoe, but no. Out. The top is too young and shiny and just cheap looking.

  • alyce1213

Noooo please don’t make allusions to Chloe Sevigny when talking about Zoe.  Even Zoe’s misses have some value to them — well-made, edgy, expensive, risky. Zoe’s schmattas look like cheap, thrown-together joke clothing.

  • another_laura

Out.  Too much, even for this clotheshorse.

  • IN. I hate the blouse. Hate it. But the whole outfit looks fabulous. I like the IDEA behind the look and that is why it is in. The shorts, the shoes, the dressyness of the look – it is working for me.
But Dear Prabal Gurung: your shoes did not need the extra biscuit under the toe. It looks like an afterthought.

  • SophieCollier

The photos are a bit wonky in perspective, so it looks like she’s severely long waisted, but I think I get what she’s going for and it’s… not awful.  A bit weird, but not awful.

  • Elias Pineda

in, girl proved chic nd impecable before, now she is going for a new goal.

  • I don’t hate the top. I don’t hate the shorts.

    Together, I hate the outfit.

  • Nicole Merrill

  • Synnamin

OUT. That top just doesn’t go with those shorts.

  • That top looks like my Mom’s kitchen. I can’t.

  • AudreysMom

this is the most expensive looking combination of faux casual crap I’ve seen in a long time. Even Zoe can’t make this work. OUT.

  • golspie

The shorts are great and the top is great but together they’re ridiculous.

  • golspie

The shorts are great and the top is great but together they’re ridiculous.

  • cleep1000

No. Shorts are too casual for a top like that. Look how killer it is with black pants on the model. Whereas, the shorts are kinda lame even on the model. Stop trying to make formal/dressy shorts a thing!

  • OUT. Nothing about this look appeals to me.

  • Jangle57

No, no and again, no.  Just because you can put two pieces together, doesn’t mean you should.  OUT

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. I like the pieces individually, but it doesn’t work together.

  • Fabulous. Weird, but fabulous. IN.

  • Joyce VG

I don’t like it.  The pieces are fighting each other.  OUT.

  • mila_8

I think circus, I think fondant, but for some reason I like it. In!

  • quiltrx

OUT.   Cute top with the pants on the model…but NO to tap pants!

  • Louise Bryan

Out.  Zoe is too old to be sporting a five year old’s recital outfit.  Sorry, but that just the way things are.

  • Aly Light

  • GTrain

    Way OUT.

  • Nayasabrina

OUT-  same fit problem in the shorts as with the green old man pants a while back.   The bow doesn’t bother me as much as it does other BKs.

  • lesmaha

  • trisker

Print shorts??  The top is so lovely.  out, I’m afraid, although I love her looks usually

  • pokokpuding

In. How does she do it.

  • No, I just can’t. I think the combinations on the model are much better.

    Good try, but OUT.

  • Bailey Debruynkops

the top is amazing but the shorts make everything too satiny. OUT

  • Bozhi

That top with those shorts and shoes scream streetwalker.  Since I assume she not a streetwalker, I vote OUT.

  • RzYoung

IN, she looks great. I like the top more than the little shorts. I’d love to see the little shorts with something less noisy up top

  • LambeeBaby

Out. Individually the pieces work, but together they look like Minnie Mouse Rockette. What has she done, or not done with her hair? It looks sloppy.

  • Twinzilla

She needs better advice than this.

  • Judy_S

IN. I love the combination. On her. She is using her status (and body) to wear something nobody else could pull off.

  • I’m not in love with the peplum, but the rest of the look is adorable.

  • Charmella…a DIVA at large!

For her…OUT! She should really know better…or fire her new stylist!

  • jw_ny

the top and bottom do not go together.  I like each individually tho.

  • Candigirl1968

OUT.  These are starting to look like costumes.

  • OUT.  The outfit as a whole is bizarre. It does look more like a dance recital costume than anything.

  • lrhoff

No.  One or the other, but not both of those together.

  • Out. one or the other, but not both- the shorts are causing eye twitches… not a shoe guy here,….but I actually like these (with a diff outfit of course)

  • BazoDee

  • In.

  • Ezmartin

i’d do her, so in obviously. and she looks great too.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

IN! Yes it is definitely cray-cray, but it works.

  • guest2visits

Don’t like the shorts by themselves or paired with the peplum top. It’s very unbalanced.
I like it as the model wore it –  Zoe would have looked stunning that way too.
Glad you mentioned tap pants, – thats what those short-shorts with jackets remind me of; taps. Or Cigarette Girl at the cabana.

  • lill5

Out. The top looks like the beginning of some sort of futuristic-but-still-1950’s Dairy Queen uniform. It’s just weird.

  • the proportions would be improved by losing the shoulder pads.  still, it’s an in for me.  cute, sassy, and unusual.

  • In. Its about her attitude though. She loves wearing it.

  • Dhammadina

    In. Agreed: darling.

  • afabulous50

Things that make ya go hmmm….

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

wee tiny little “in” that shrinks proportionally as the bow grows larger.

  • Nope. It’s interesting? Maybe? But not in.

  • lilibetp

    It’s ridiculous!
