In or Out: Selena Gomez in Versace

Posted on June 12, 2012

You know what? We’re feeling magnanimous today. Because even though our first thought upon viewing this was to make fun of it, we’re going to try and be a little open-minded.

Selena Gomez launches her debut fragrance at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City in Versace.

Versace Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Karmen Pedaru

But it’s not easy, just so you know.

We often come up against the reality that what so-called “normal” people need to get out of their wardrobes is vastly different from what celebrities need to get out of theirs. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that’s the foundation of our red carpet coverage and why we tend to run shrieking from the idea that we should tell those so-called “normal” people how they should dress. Celebrities aren’t like us. That’s not exactly revelatory but sometimes you forget that, occasionally, the life of a celebrity will twist and turn and result in a situation like standing in the Herald Square Macy’s store looking like you’re ready to go swimming. You probably don’t find yourself doing those sorts of things often, but you don’t have your own fragrance, do you?

So the goal here was clearly to project an image of Fresh! Young! Summer! Sexy! But Not Slutty Like Some Of Those Other Girls! In other words, the outfit could be described in exactly the same language the fragrance she’s poledancing for could be described. In that sense: well done. Perfect branding symbiosis.

On a purely style level, it mostly works. We think the proportions on the shorts are pretty awful, but eschewing a belt and going for a slightly toned-down style of jacket were pretty good choices. We’re not convinced that jacket actually works with the look, however. And the shoes are just awful.  In fact, the shoes and the jacket look like something she ripped off the back of a publicist at the very last second; pieces more akin to office wear than a Versace two-piece.

Kittens make the final call, but we’re comfortable calling this one an OUT. Coulda worked, but the detailing is way off.

IN! Sassy!

OUT! Assy!

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ attempted time trip back to her twenties was considered ill-advised by the commentariat, who rose up as one and declared it OUT.

meh. she can go away now.

      • Maryann J. Ward

        have kept the runway

      • Maryann J. Ward

        have kept the runway

    • Kathy Marlow

O to the UT….Cute sandals and a different jacket would have saved it

      • AlexisPayne

        Ditto! Out.

      • JosephLamour

Agreed. Mostly cause of that unexplained flap of fabric below her chest, the fact that I LOATHE two piece belly baring non-beach psuedo Fly Girl outfits, and a little bit cause I want to say “Assy!”

        • aeg66

Fly Girls!! Thats it! It reminded me of something early 90s. You nailed it!

      •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I agree, sandals that pick up the colours of the print and a solid jacket that’s not a DIFFERENT WHITE… sorry, the mismatching whites are making my caps lock pop.

I still don’t like the outfit but she could have gotten away with it.

    • shirab

Looks like she came in from the pool to the over-air conditioned house and grabbed a cardigan so she wouldn’t freeze. Though that doesn’t explain the shoes.

    • eclare

      She looks cold.

    • FashionShowAtLunch

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. That was my first thought, and I’m sticking with it.

    • AWS

      Tacky.  OUT

    • Christin Pardy-Nosenchuk

she should have kept the runway look.

    • Toto Maya

Nice try TLO, but no. Make fun of it. It deserves to be mocked.

    • RebeccaKW

Out.  I don’t really hate it.  She’s a 20-something starlet who is getting her own perfume for some reason.  But, I do kinda wish she’d worn a belt.  Maybe not that giant runway one, but something so it doesn’t look like her romper was too small and just ripped in half when she stood up.  A jacket was needed, but maybe something a bit edgier-a sleek black leather one maybe?  I also think that I prefer the runway version of the shorts.  The exaggerated silhouette is what gives them interest and keeps them from looking like a swimsuit bottom.  The shoes are terrible for this.

      • Depot'er

oooh, loving that idea- a really great jacket could have *made* this outfit. I can see the sleek leather (but is she going for her core tweeny-something audience or? Maybe they could have thrown down some sand and a beach ball?

At least she isn’t wearing a starfish belt or something worse..

      • another_laura

        Excellent analysis, RebeccaKW!

    • Brett Hulst

ew. not good. it’s weirdly fleshy. OUT

    • Heather Barkman

OUT – and what’s the deal with the bottom hem on the top (and I use the term “top” loosely here)? At least it’s finished on the model.

    • VicksieDo

IN. sooooo sassy and young without being slutty.  She looks great and I love the shoes too.

      • julieblue

i was thinking exactly the same thing. i need those shoes.

      • Lisa_Cop

IN. I also think she looks cute although I wish she kept the runway jacket.

    • AthenaJ

Assy. Of course she has a nice body, but the look is straight from a 50’s beach party. Honey,  unless you’re within 50 feet of a large body of water, keep the sea creature bathing suit at home.

Also, considering the only scent I can associate with Selena Gomez is that of Justin Beiber’s raging teenage hormones, I think I’ll take a pass on this particular fragrance…

      • Lori

Even when one is within 50 feet of a large body of water one should not appear to have a starfish crawling out of one’s lady bits, so maybe it’s better to just skip the sea creature bathing suit altogether.

    • Ashley

Out.  Her “top” looks like the hem that should have been on her shorts.

    • Maggie

So, I guess I’m the only one who thinks she looks really cute? IN

    • Mathilde

IN. Far from perfect but cute, young and summery. Like the fact that it’s fresh, not slutty. Granted, two pieces are weird, but she’s a starlet in her twenties so it’s now or never.  The hem on the top is disturbing, thought.

    • BazoDee

    • call_me_schmeg

i will ride against the bitter kitten current and say IN. selenas just wanna have fun.

    • Trisha26

I like the runway look (those shoes are also hein though) but it would have presented a much more sophisticated, i.e older vibe. I have no problem with the look in general, it just doesn’t look polished.

    • Clueless_Jock

      She looks great.

    • Martha Hicks Leta

Go on ahead and close your mind. She’s got a starfish stuck to her crotch. This is never ok. The play suit would be ok in a different pattern. This looks like a design school fail.

      • FishInThePercolator

Exactly.  Sea creatures have no business being that close to a vulva.

        • carolynmo

          Ha! I agree–out.

    • teensmom99

this looks exactly like something Veronica Lodge would wear.  And why the nude lipstick?  OUT.

      • formerlyAnon

Veronica would have worn better shoes.

    • VioletFem

OUT. She should have worn the jacket the model was paired with and a pair of strap-y sandals.

    • LuisaNL

She’s young and cute as a button but this is awful. The proportions are all wrong and the shoe choice is appalling. OUT!

    • Laura Nugent

I actually kind of like it.  I think she fell down on the details, but it’s a fun look that she’s almost pulling off, IN.

    • Sue_Asponte

I’m kind of a fangirl, but I can’t understand this. She usually does so well. Sigh. OUT.

    • SapphoPoet

Out. I absolutely abhor heels with shorts. So.Wrong.

    • Danielle

Out.   They don’t look like high-waisted shorts, but regular-rise pulled way too far up.  It looks uncomfortable and unflattering.  She is way cuter than this outfit.

    • j_anson

Out. I actually like the cardigan and shoes, and I could live with the bathing-suit-y-ness of it, but the proportion on the shorts really is awful, and if you’re going to do this, you should do it right.

    • mjude

she looks like something she is not. cute girl but sorry honey…OUT.  cant even go there about the shoes.

    • kerry dee

i think this outfit is absolutely adorable, but she definitely needs new shoes. thats the only issue i have.

    • Kate Kealey

I think she looks cute, but it needed a belt to keep it from looking too pedestrian. The shoes are an after thought, shouldn’t have been that tough to find a cute pair of sandals.

    • Sarah Thomas

Actually, I think the detailing saves it. IN, by the skin of its teeth.

    • Ivona Foster

    • JasmineAM

I know she’s 19? 20? or whatever, but she still looks 12. This outfit is not flattering. Her skin looks weird too. OUT from this kitten.

    • Lina_bee

OUT. It’s half office girl and half 40s beach bunny — and the juxtaposition is terrible.

    • formerlyAnon

Out. The shoes and the baby face drag the outfit in between them in completely different directions. Oh, sooo out.

    • Jeffrey D Foldenauer

Out–there seems to be a starfish front and center that would normally be located back and center.

    • hughman

This is the Cocktail Waitress segment of the Miss Club Med pageant.

    • Basket

She could wear anything if she would just leave that Justin boy alone. I so totally don’t feel him.

    • Alli

OUT, if only because she didn’t go all-out and subbed the matching (fierce) jacket for a….cardigan?

    • KD Beach

Is it too 1950s to think that, if you are “paying” that much for shorts that there ought to be pattern matching going on along the seams?  Out.

      • Scarlet39

I agree.  This could have possibly worked if it weren’t that that awful mismatched pattern right across her crotch.

    • kimmeister

Out for the venue/event.  Would’ve been in had it been a pool party.

    • kelsita421

Not in a million years. OUT.

    • Jessi03

Lord help me, but I think it’s kinda cute.

    • TSkot

She looks adorable, head to toe.  Even the shoes.  IN

    • nomoreprinces

I think I made one of my Barbies this outfit once when I was a kid and I promptly peeled it off her and chucked it.  Same with this get up.  Out.

    • clairellis

In. I like it. I didn’t immediately think slut so that’s good. She’s young she can get away with it. If she was 30 I’d say out.

    • piecesofconfetti

The other day my mom and I were in Macys and saw the poster for her perfume. “Didn’t Selena die a long time ago,” mom asked? Wrong Selena mom, lol.

Anyway, this is hiddy and OUT.

    • MandyJane

Out, high-waisted shorts and flesh colored shoes? No thanks!

    • VicD

Out – unless one is on a mega-yacht in the South of France.

    • Nancy Marion

OUT. Also, hate the nasty extra serifs on the “signature.”  She forgot the bubble heart and the smiley face.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh that is OUT in so many ways one does not have the time to list.

    • dya2637

Its like a rejected costume from the Esther William water ballet.

    • cmb92191

My teenage son just said she looks like she’s 30– and she’s wearing a bathings suit from the 1950’s.     I guess being Justin Beiber’s GF ages you.

    • Jessica O’Connell

      Yeah…no…. OUT.

    • jmorino08

Definitely an out. Even she doesn’t seem to be entirely comfortable with it.

    • Anplica Fiore

In – she looks fresh & young.  The only glaring thing I HATE are the shoes – what’s wrong with some fun sandals Selena??

    • MilaXX

OUT!  I usually like what she wears, but this is just done wrong. Mind you I think she’s young enough to wear the shorts and bandeau top without looking slutty. In fact I like her version and look better than the model. However, the shoes are all wrong and the jacket doesn’t quite work with the look.

    • warontara

Oh so very very very OUT.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

mostly she looks okay, i think. i dont understand why she or, even moreso, the people around her didnt get that not only are those shoes hideous, they up the slutty factor quite a bit. the sweater, eh, i dont even notice.

    • MightyMarshal

I have to say, it’s an in for me. I like it and I like that it’s different. She reminds me a bit of a more chic Katy Perry, so this looks pretty much like that. I even like the nude shoes and I kinda hate nude shoes.

    • Sara LaBatt

All I can think of is Dirty Dancing when Baby’s older sister did that song…I think it’s the shorts.

    • Sabrina Stern

Out-didn’t Baby’s annoying sister wear this at the final show at Kellerman’s in Dirty Dancing, never let that movie be your fashion guide

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I love her, but this needs help. The shorts needed some kind of belt to keep from looking like a giant pastel-patterned diaper, and that cardigan just isn’t working. Maybe a casual blazer with rolled sleeves, in a color, and some wedge sandals. Her legs are long enough that she doesn’t need to elongate them further with pointy nude shoes. Fun shoes would have been better.

    • snarkykitten

the ridiculous seam on the ah…front is distracting

    • giiiirrrr

Man, I wish I could wear some forty-seven-inch heels that make my legs look like Cameron Diaz’s.  Oh, and OUT.

    • LauraWL

Out. I like the idea (my mom wore this kind of belly baring stuff in the early seventies) but agree the jacket/shoes just don’t work with this sort of look. She is a very pretty girl but strappy sandals and a flowy jacket would have worked much better IMHO.

    • Sara__B

      Out. Killed by the shoes.

    • Kerry McCombs

No. Don’t like. Don’t like at all.

    • Kerry McCombs

No. Don’t like. Don’t like at all.

    • CassieLee22

      oh dear god OUT

    • Cate

IN! I think she looks cute, mature, but not too tarted up.

    • allj

Disagree. I think she looks adorable. IN

    • bailey debruynkops

      bad, out.

    • Dixie Murphy Ross

But hey at least she doesn’t make me cringe with skinnyfear, this time!

    • lrhoff

Wish she would’ve kept the gold waistband and other details from the runway look.  What she’s wearing is pretty unimpressive….

    • kmk05

OUT! This is… too much flesh. Not that I mind in the right circumstances, but in this case I vote for no.

    • Cassie

Hmm. I think she looks really cute, actually. I say IN, even if I would have done something different with the shoes.

    • Julia McLean

    • Aly Light

Bahahaha! She might have sold it if she’d worn the jacket featured in the runway look, but that limp cardigan really shows off what a failure this is. OUT.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I might’ve gone for it if she’d worn little flat white Mary Janes or something. Then I’d be thinking it was summery and cute and fun, if maybe a little casual. But those shoes make it look like Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver and that’s a whole different thing. So she’s OUT for shoe crimes against humanity.

    • unbornfawn

OUT!    All kinds of wrong proportions going on and I can’t get behind the tube top with the jacket. The nude shoes take it down down down.

    • Dave

Wow.  This makes me want to go back and give Catherine Zeta-Jones an “in”.  Undeniably OUT.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

    • melanie0866

OUT.  The only way this would have worked is at a pool party.

    • Jill Tracy

the shoes make it OUT! Coulda been in with some strappy sandals!

    • Imasewsure

I think she looks adorable except for the dull a** shoes…. works for me (on her, that is)… IN!

    • Jangle57

In the immortal words of Joan Rivers, starlet or streetwalker?  Ok a streetwalker probably wouldn’t wear a cardigan but still OUT

    • FayeKat

She is young and pretty and she can get away with it. IN

    • Elizabeth Rust

OUT, at least for this event; it’d look cute enough at the beach, but here it has that “didn’t have time to finish dressing” vibe to it.

    • CatherineRhodes

    • jw_ny

She’s the perfect age, body type, and image to be able to carry off this look.  Hate her shoe choice…would prefer a more casual wedge and/or sandal.

    • altalinda

    • silaria

Oh dear.  I love this girl to the point where I want to throw myself between her and some of the more biting commentators in this thread, but even I can’t defend this.  It is  painful to the eyes, an abomination in the sight of me. OUT.

That said, my first thought when I saw it was, “LEGS!” And that’s never a bad first impression for a young starlet to give.

    • texashistorian

Cute, but why not sandals? Anyway, it’s an “in” after others convinced me.

    • PaulaBerman

OUT! Assy! Sums it up perfectly. Those shorts give me hives.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Granny panties with high heels? OUT. Next.

    • Pop Tarts Jen

      O. U. T. spells OUT OUT OUT!

    • kikisayshi

Really the only thing that bothers me here is the ugly Under the Sea print on those cute shorts. Overall, other than that it is a good “celebrity only” look. But I just can’t get past the starfish on her crotch. Sorry, Selena, you’re OUT.

    • CozyCat

I’m going to say “in.”  As you say, celebrities wear clothes for different reasons than we mere mortals.  Right now, she is trying to establish a grown-up, sexy, but not slutty image.  And this outfit does exactly that.  (I’m not sure it’s right for the venue, but when the pictures show up on line they will do their job.)

    • nannypoo

Always go with your first impulse. This outfit was born to be made fun of.

    • Joyce VG

OUT! Assy.  Get thee to a nunnery.

    • Le_Sigh

OUT.  Its tweenager lamb dressed as mutton.  (She still looks super young even though I know she’s over 18).

    • elzatelzabelz

OUT- 1) I hate shorts as “formal” wear, 2) the jacket is super weird.

    • miagain

I have a set of sheets from LLBean in that same print… my sheets look better.

    • GTrain

    • Marian Humin

Sandals and a more casual jacket would have been cute on her.

    • golspie

The little slut knows exactly what she’s doing!

    • golspie

It’s strange: that head doesn’t seem to go with that body.

    • Merneith

Out. The shorts are just bad. And thanks to Rhianna, I’m retroactively voting all bandeau swim tops OUT, on principal. I don’t know if this is a bandeau or just a bra. Either way – it’s no good.

    • Samuel Joesph Donovan

Out, go give it to Katy Perry so she can look appropriately hilarious in it.

    • Bozhi

Out.  If she would have gone with the jacket and shoes the model wore, I would have said “in”, but she wore it all wrong.  Those shoes take it to tacky territory, and that sweater or whatever that is should not be worn with the outfit.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I think she looks cute for a 20 something.  I want her hair.  I agree about the shoes, though, but still, IN.

    • lifetime_student

Jacket and shoes say, ‘going to church with Grandma,’ while the shorts and top say, ‘having a drink in a trendy South Beach bar.’ Out.

    • Andrea Lane

Disagree. I actually like the look. She could have gone with a more interesting shoe, though. IN.

    • TomBord

pretty girl does stranger then fiction outfit.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

OUT!  And the shoes are hiddy!!!

    • Athena Bast

OUT! Without the belt and jacket this looks more like something a middle-aged but still Hamptons woman would wear to prove she was hot.

    • Susan Crawford

Well, she has such a cute little face, and a cute itty-bitty li’l figure that even in this she looks adorable. (Except for the shoes.) I’m going to go with IN on this one because my Merlot just kicked in and because girls wanna have fun in silly outfits every so often.

    • Sweetvegan

In! My, there are some very bitter kittens here! The outfit is not perfect, but it works. The jacket from the runway would’ve made her look too old. Something about the imperfections in this case keep it young looking.

    • Eovaai

      OUT. Awful look.

    • Sara Munoz

      Ooh, no. OUT.

    • dickylarue

In from the neck up…Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver from the neck to ankles….from the ankles down, Kim Bassinger’s “fuck me” pumps from the zany madcap 80’s comedy BLIND DATE featuring Bruce Willis and a demure understated performance by John Larroquette.

    • MzzPants

    • MinAgain

The shoes are appalling.  And the shorts are kinda weird, even on the model.  I like the idea of the outfit, more than the reality.  Out.

    • TieDye64

OUT. Hot pants Barbie. Why no cute strappy sandals?

    • ccm800

    • judybrowni

She misunderstood them when they said “secretarial pool.”

    • judybrowni

She misunderstood them when they said “secretarial pool.”

    • Paige Boerman

I can’t even muster up the effort to complain about it! I’m both bored and aghast, which is an interesting combination of emotions, but still OUT.

    • Paige Boerman

I can’t even muster up the effort to complain about it! I’m both bored and aghast, which is an interesting combination of emotions, but still OUT.

    • RzYoung

She looks like a bathroom decoration

    • PeggyOC

Out.  She usually looks pretty classy and pretty, and far too nice to be dating the Beiber.  Here, she looks like she deserves to date the Bieber.

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

OUT! Shells and seastars? Really? Sad little jacket. Uh. OUT

    • Judy_J

OUT.  I can’t forgive those shoes.

    • Charmella

      OUT…Get rid of your stylist!

    • kathleen morgan

OUT and I have this desire to pull those shorts down just an inch. They look so damn uncomfortable.

    • marilyn

In.  It’s cute and she is young.

    • Shawn EH

Out! If this is what happens when the Little Mermaid learns to walk, throw her back in!

    • Ashley

The line of the shorts, they bother me. Out.

    • amywinns

    • guest2visits

For the purpose of selling on the floor of a Macys; this works fine for me. In fact; this is what I would call resort; in a friendlier
more easy- going vein, like ‘vacation’.  She’s very pretty; but I still don’t like bandeau tops, or dresses.
I think she looks nicer than the model.

    • Rebecca

OUT. The jacket is totally wrong.

    • aristida_girl

OUT, a cute cardi and strappy sandals were called for here, even if that would have made the outfit too casual and inappropriate, which it is anyway

    • Depot'er

wow, rarely is the first word out of my mouth “Yech…” but…yech. OUT.

    • Julie Fountain

OUT OUT OUT.  I hate sweaters with shorts.  And the shoes are assy.

    • another_laura

      Out.  Ick.

    • bellafigura1

IN! Although she can’t be one year older, one pound heavier, or one inch shorter and pull it off. True, the shoes were a terrible choice (a mile-high strappy wedge would have be younger and funner) and the sweater-jacket color isn’t adding any depth or interest, but I think she looks cute like a 40s pin-up.

    • demidaemon

      OUT. It’s assy.

    • TheVeryLivingEND

Although I get what she’s trying to do…that doesn’t mean I have to like it.  Those shorts N E E D that belt, in my opinion.  Sandals would have made this look infinitely better.  It’s obviously out.

    • saanrio

The shoes don’t work, but I can forgive the jacket.  I actually like the shorts better without the belt, and I kind of hate to say this, but… this is kind of exactly what I expect her to wear to this kind of thing.

    • KathKo

Ha ha ha ha ha !
      *pointing fingers*
I’m so glad I’m not famous. Now I get why they get those ridiculous wages and are so wealthy. Clearly, celebrity have to get something out of their stunts or we would have nobody on our screens.
