IN or OUT: Noomi Rapace in Valentino

Posted on June 01, 2012

It’s still so weird to see her in something soft and conventional.

Noomi Rapace attends UK premiere of “Prometheus” in a Valentino dress paired with Harry Winston jewelry.

Valentino Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Hedvig Palm (NEXT)

After punching through the screen as the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and pulling off the unlikely trick of going from a Swedish movie star to an international movie star (not many manage that one), she needed to do one thing with her public-appearance outfits going forward and she’s doing it quite well here: she needed to remind the world that she’s not Lizbeth Salander.

If she’d asked our advice on the matter, we would’ve said “Sweetie, we don’t care what you like to wear, what you have to wear are pretty, chic, conventional outfits that make you look pretty and desirable in a totally heteronormative, middle-of-the-road kind of way. You have to go from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to The Girl with the Hundred-Thousand-Dollar Dress, mkay? It’s the name of the game.” Then we’d run, because we’d be afraid she could kick our asses.

But she’s doing all right here. It’s a beautiful dress; simple and not likely to pose any difficulties for the wearer. A gal’s gonna look pretty good in this dress from almost any angle so long as it fits her correctly. The makeup’s pretty, although she could’ve used a stronger lip, but the hair’s just a bit too high for her face, we’re thinking. The jewelry’s nice, especially the earrings.

Kittens make the final call.

Vote Now!

IN! Chic, simple & pretty!

OUT! Kinda boring.

Angelina Jolie’s funeral dress was roundly panned by the PUFs, who voted the outfit OUT.

  • the top…. OH GOD THE TOP….. *eyes bleed*

    • Knightley

Yeah, that’s what I think too.  It’s doing the same thing on the model (just not as noticeable since the model isn’t as busty), so it’s not her fault, but the saggy side-boobs are just nightmarish.  It’s like she’s wearing two mini-hammocks.

      • she’s too petit for that dress… compare the location of the “belt” on the model and Noomi (PS: sorry about my poor enligsh)

        •  It looks like fits loosely on the model, but even more so on Noomi...CNNMoney7.notlong.Com

      • MoHub

Also looks as if she’s got a serious pit-hair problem.

        • lchopalong

           She probably doesn’t shave, and I don’t think that’s a problem.

  • IN, she looks beautiful!

  • blogless

IN, I think she looks pretty. Although the Superman stance isn’t doing her any favors.

  • carolynmo

She looks lovely, but the bodice is challenging here, isn’t it? It looks like fits loosely on the model, but even more so on Noomi.

    • I agree. She’s so pretty (those cheekbones!), but that bodice isn’t doing much to show her off to her best advantage.

    • Lisa_Cop

the fit is not quite right but for going back to her original looks (pretty not scary) she gets a small in.

  • I’m going to say OUT, but I’m blaming it all on the dress. You said, the dress would look good on anyone if it fits – and I’m not sure that dress does fit around the bust. It’s droopy and saggy, and not particularly flattering.

  • AlinaValero

    neck up: IN

    waist down: IN
    great arms: IN
weird saggy boobs in that dress? OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Libby Rhoman

I don’t think the dress is made for an arms-akimbo stance.  🙁

      • kimmeister

But that stance is great for showing off her killer arms.

    • poggi

I agree.  Dresses with this bodice look lovely from the back and the side, but not so great from the head-on view.  If she can figure out how to have all photographers shoot her looking back over her shoulder or in profile, then IN, otherwise….out.

  • She is so pretty. I love the way the back drapes. IN!

  • Sara__B

    In, but kind of boring.

  • Libby Rhoman

I would vote in, if it weren’t for the hair.  Not only is it too high, but it creates too much of long oval shape with her face (which is just oval enough on it’s own).  Also, it looks like it might shatter into hair crumbs if you touched it.  It’s distracting and unflattering.

    OUT.-The Hair Police

    • l3icest3r

Agree — hair is awful. It looks greasy and dry all at once.

      •  I agree. I think the dress is nice, but the hairstyle betrays her age — makes her look much older than 33. A fresher hair-do and it would have been more IN.

        • nyll18

100% agree. The hair adds 10 years. Out on that alone.

  • AlexisPayne

In, but that hair makes my eye twitch

  • In, agreed on the stronger lip, but still good all the way around

  • Spreecord

The bodice looks strange (like she’s a flat-chested girl wearing her mother’s bra), but it’s not so awful that I won’t give her a half-hearted IN.

  • DinaSews

IN. She has some beautiful skin.

  • sockandaphone

IN for easy effortless chic. although i could do without the ridic hair

  • Imasewsure

Pretty dress, if a little bit dull… but nothing from the neck up looks good or interesting or particularly pretty… she looks like a nameless wife attached to a older male star… or maybe a well-heeled seat-filler…. boring!

  • TropiCarla

    IN. Love me some Lizbeth.
She missed the mark on a few details as you mentioned but looks different and lovely.

  • lalahartma

    Boring, but in.

  • IN, dont like hair though

  • CynthiaNOLA

I just read somewhere that her real father was a flamenco dancer.  fitting.  she’s beautiful, and she looks lovely in this dress.

  • In, and AGREE on the hair altitude issue. My one request, keep her away from a threesome with Uma Thurman and David Letterman lest we get a rehash of the 67th Academy Awards debaucle, ie “Uma, Noomi. Noomi, Uma. Oh look, there’s Oprah…Hey, girl! Come meet Noomi. Noomi, Oprah…” ad infinitum.

  • Judy_J

OUT.  The bodice makes her boobs look droopy.

  • MsKitty

    Sometimes less is more. IN.

  • ccinnc

IN, but then all I’m seeing are those killer cheekbones.

  • IN!

  • cleep1000

I can’t get over how horrible the MODEL looks.

    • charlotte

Then again, most models do (I’m not talking about their physique, it’s just the styling).

  • golspie

    No. It’s all too bland.

  • The top isn’t hanging quite right, but I still think she looks gorgeous. With a little adjustment of the fabric in the bodice, it would be perfect. IN!

    • I agree – she’ looks 80% In for me.  If the bodice were tweeked, it’d be 100%.

  • OUT-ish-IN-ish. I don’t think the top of the dress flatters her–it bunches funny.  I guess I’d say:  meh.

  • IN.  The top fits a bit wonky, but overall it looks good on her.

  • IN, although I myself am not a fan of the blowsy boobs

  • jennifervney

  • She was brilliant as Lisbeth Salander – loved those movies! I think she looks great here, though I agree about the hair.

  • joe_tey83

It’s also so weird to see her smile. Lisbeth doesn’t smile, especially smiling like that with her teeth exposed.

    The dress is alright.

  • IN.  I think it’s lovely, and just dark enough so that you don’t forget what she was before.

  • onyxkatze

OUT — I’m sorry, I *cannot* get over the boob bags. Otherwise IN.

  • Pretty…IN.

  • miagain

    IN… of course, just because,

  • demidaemon

I think the dress is pretty, but the fit in the top is horrid. It just hangs there. I say barely IN, because overall she looks good, yet not horrible nor spectacular.

  • Jessica O’Connell

IN! She is almost unrecognizable but she still looks very pretty!

  • Candigirl1968

    In, but still boring.

  • PrunellaV

It is rather boring, but not enough to not give her an IN.

  • altalinda

    100% in.

  • In, but she’s making me think of Tina Fey for some reason. Who also kicks ass?

  • Ogden1990

She’s lovely but she looks OLDER-ish. Must be the hair. So out…by a hair.

  • EEKstl

IN but hair could be better.  Pretty dress.

  • It’s the kind of simple but elegant look that you can’t really mess up. IN.

  • Out because the bodice is so ill-fitting

  • Out because the bodice is so ill-fitting

  • j_anson

I’d call it an in, although. I’m not sure the “looking conventional” thing is going to work that well for her. The problem is that she doesn’t look as good doing “conventional” as all the more conventional-looking movies stars look doing “conventional.” :

  • Her hair doesn’t bother me as much as that hem.  I’ll bet some ambitious young person with a pair of scissors, a needle and thread could make a fortune in Hollywood.

  • Vodeeodoe

Out. That top is fitted better on the model than on her. I know you guys don’t like matchy matchy, but I think matching black crystal jewelery or some other colored jewels would look better on someone so pale. I feel like I can barely see her earrings and bracelet.

  • So in. Chic and classic.

  • reddhouston

Random comment…I kind of liked her in the 2nd Sherlock movie too.

  • jilly_d

    IN! LUV. HUH.

  • StrandedFashionista

    In. She looks very pretty.

  • altissima

    enormous deflated boobs?

  • Judy_S

IN. I see the problem with the blousing of the top. I think it’s that she’s a bit shorter in the waist than the model. But she looks charming.

  • Lina_bee

Tentative IN. I have reservations about the hair and makeup, but overall she looks great.

  • In but whatever.

  • Anna Tree

    Bored now. OUT.

  • Agree with your critiques 100 percent (stronger lip, softer hair), but still consider this an IN.

  • mjude

the dress looks baggy on her. OUT

  • clairellis

In. But the top of the dress is strange.

  • GAH!

    I see London.
    I see France.
Why, oh why, must I see her underpants?

  •  IN! Love her look.

  • she looks better than the model (usually not the case because this model has that ballerina muscular gauntness) even without any direct comparisons, Noomi looks lovely.

  • amywinns

    Pretty! IN!
(I don’t get the draped bodice hate. It’s certainly not making me think that it’s her breasts hanging down– or in any dangers of hanging out… it’s loose fabric, what’s the crisis?)

  • OUT – she looks like she’s wearing a Dolly Parton hand-me-down.  Her islands are getting lost in the stream.

  • Too baggy and the hair is BAD. Out.

  • Anathema_Device

In. She looks elegant. Don’t love the hair, but not so much as to vote her out.

  • BazoDee

  • Scarlet39

In.  Simple can be beautiful, and this is definitely beautiful.

  • HobbitGirl

No woman wants her boobs to look like that. Those are sad droopy boobs. And I’m sure hers are perfectly lovely really. OUT, OUT I say! Hoist those puppies up!

Furthermore, I am declaring an automatic OUT on any woman whose undies I can see on the runway/red carpet. SO tired of that look.

  • PeaceBang

It’s okay. Not bad enough to be out but just barely in.

  • GorgeousThings

IN, but barely. The torso on the dress is too long on her, and it bows out and makes her look wider than she is. I’ll blame her stylist. They should have gotten a tailor to do a little work on this dress and then it would have been great.

  • Nah. Doesn’t suit her and the hair is weird. OUT.

  • kingderella

just no. i understand the ‘rebranding’ thing shes doing here, but she simply doesnt looks good in this dress. the bodice gives her melting sideboobs, the hair is hiddy, and its overall just kinda boring. plus, i cant quite tell whats wrong with the make up, but her face looks very plain here, and we all know she can be breathtaking. OUT!

  • girliecue

In. She looks beautiful and I love Valentino.

  • tallgirl1204

Gorgeous.  And I like the “up” hair– it lifts the whole face in a nice way.

  • VicksieDo

I have a hard time with the visible underthings, so I have to give the dress and OUT.  But I don’t mind the bodice being 1920s style, and I like the black and the sparkles.

  • Snailstsichr

That over the shoulder look is to die for. In
And now that we have successfully re-branded, let’s do color!

  • sharonimus

The top of this dress is AWFUL. OUT. She was *this* close.

  • AWS

You could wear THAT to a funeral too.

  •  IN (though I will say, she kinda looks like Tina Fey on a *very* good day here).

  • marilyn

In.  I was surprised how similar her face is to Kathie Lee Gifford’s.  Should I be afraid of revenge for making that comment?  She is gorgeous and the dress is perfect for her.

  • calimon

  • trisker

IN.  Bodice of gown is weird, agree about the hair, but overall it’s a great look.

  • kelsita421

i hate the fit of the top in general — or maybe i just hate dresses that do that on me — but she looks beautiful. IN!

  • DeGuz

Not perfect, but lovely and pretty. IN

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i like her, she’s smart, thats a gorgeous dress, it works. one of the most interesting things about her is that she, alone, has really change the definition of what one might expect from a swedish moviestar. fabulous. no more hot stewardesses, not here anyway.

  • MzzPants

IN.  Would love to see it with some kind of diamond necklace.

  • Le_Sigh

IN.  She looks lovely (the hair is a bit agey)  and because I love her.

  • IN – I agree with you on every point. Maybe a coloured nail varnish instead of a stronger lip?

  • minnye

I’m not a fan of the hair but it’s appropriate. Gorgeous dress. IN.

  • DaveUWSNYC

    Kinda pretty…kinda boring…kinda boobdroopy…but i’s Friday of Jubilee weekend, so…with a nod to Her Majesty’s 60th… IN.

  • IN!

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the hair, but i think she needs a different earring. These almost blend in and a warmer lip is definitely warranted.

BTW I finally saw the American version and I much prefer the Swedish version. I’m kind of scratching my head wondering why they made the changes they did for the US movie.

    • Lisa_Cop

They also ruined the Swedish “Let the right one in” (the American remake was called “Let me in”.

      • MilaXX

It wasn’t awful Just that having seen the first version and read the book, I was a bit let down. If I had just seen this version I probably would have liked it more.

  • argonauticos

too big on her….so I have to vote out. And some jewelry would have helped…maybe. 🙂

  • NurseEllen

Very In, she looks fab and so wildly different from her previous persona that it’s quite stunning.  And I think the last person to go from Swedish movie star to international movie star was Ingrid Bergman, back in the early ’40s.  She did OK, so maybe Noomi will, too.

    • Lisa_Cop

Technically Liv Ullman is Norwegian but Swedish director Ingmar Bergman made her an international star, along with Bibbi Andersen and Max Von Sydow in the late ’60’s/early ’70’s.

  • Whoa. With her hair like that, I totally see Tina Fey in that first picture. Tina’s awesome, but that’s not what Roomi should be going for.

  • rumcg66

I dunno… can’t I give it a MEH? It’s really not egregious enough to be an out, but I can’t quite muster an in either.

  • Joyce VG

    IN IN IN!

  • In In In. Love her Love her Love her. That’s all.

  • Out! Boring, and the top is sort of sad and saggy.

  • lesmaha

In. She’s allowed to be run-of-the-mill GORGEOUS!

  • up with pod people

I think she’s glorious any which way.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    IN. Love it.

  • Gorgeous from the neck up — but she forgot her air-pump to periodically re-inflate her boobs. OUT.

    • PaulaBerman

Agree– this dress does nothing good for her chest.

  • In!

  • ChelseaNH

I’m gonna say IN.  Not great, but by no means horrible.

  • ChelseaNH

I’m gonna say IN.  Not great, but by no means horrible.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  Ugly bodice.  Though she looks good and has a great smile.

  • Louise Bryan

IN, but it’s kind of boring.

  • alyce1213

    Absolutely IN!
Very lovely and understated.  Great smile.

  • Jangle57

The top is awful but it’s not her fault – I think she looks much better in it than the model and she looks so happy – IN

  • saanrio

    IN.  Love this.

  • Sophie Collier

Another sheer skirt over granny panties, a too-blousy top, and old lady hair. If the dress had been lined and laid a bit flatter, it would be fine. However…

  • IN

  • Alice Hepburn

It looks like the waist is too high on her making it look baggy not just loose. Also not a huge fan of the hair. OUT

  • quiltrx

I can’t decide.  I like the IDEA of the dress, and especially the back.  But the front is giving her 1920s-old-lady-tits.

  • ccm800

  • In. Simple, pretty look.

  • GTrain

IN though I really think the hair and make up are aging her.

  • frankystein123

OUT, the dress looks a bit unflattering on her, especially with her hair.

  • CRH

The dress is very nice on her, but the hair and make up ruin it for me. A stronger, more defined eye look would have looked so much better on her, and made her “fierce”. Well, I liker her fearce. Also the hair…a big no. OUT

  • LambeeBaby

IN. But I agree, she would look better without high hair.

  • IN Stunning dress but the hair could be better.  Also she should take a leaf out of Victoria Beckham’s book and never smile.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

I don’t like the hair for her face shape, and the top does a weird thing inflating around her boobs, but overall she does look very chic. IN.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I hate it. OK, she looks great. But she’s my fantasy woman and I like her punked out. I hope she figures out how to do it like Kristen Stewart (wear expensive gowns while retaining personality). But IN.

  • nancymae

IN. The dress is gorgeous and Lisbeth is nowhere to be found.

  • Mexxoo

OUT! – a proper granny bustline – sagging down to touch the waist, as they naturally should be… on someone fifty years older than this poor girl!

  • boredbyopen

OUT. She aged like 20 years with this outfit and hairstyle.

  • Lilak

No big Fails here, but . . . rather more dime-a-dozen than mainstream/heteronormative.

  • chelwi

I like the dress, but that hair looks like it has a TON of hairspray in it. Don’t like.

  • guest2visits

Well it could have been a beautiful dress. She’s certainly stunning; but the first thing the dress hits you with are baggy udder type
wings, or sacks, or whatever. Her figure is distorted by the unattractive flaps.  Then it’s apparently another see through gown.
So I get to see how yet another celeb is fitting her granny panties.

  • TieDye64

IN, but I’d like it even better with differently styled hair. I want her cheekbones.

  • Haley Buchanan

Boring.  My first thought was “she looks like Tina Fey.”  Now don’t get me wrong, Tina Fey is a gorgeous woman, and an insanely talented comedienne… BUT… she tends to range from boring to boring on the red carpet.  Regardless, this look is boring no matter who it is.  And why doesn’t the top fit at all?  Let’s not even extend too much energy over that one.  OUT.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Meh. She’s lovely, but that bodice is just killing the lines of the dress, which is otherwise very nice.  She looks saggy and baggy, although the back drapes nicely.  Lukewarm, half hearted in.

  • fursa_saida

This is not particularly exciting, but she looks nice. IN.

  • jw_ny

    IN…pretty but nothing special.

I loved the Swedish versions of GWDT…would never have recognized her if I hadn’t been told that was her.

The saggy boobs are not flattering.  I don’t mind her hair, although it makes her look quite mature, as well the style of dress is on the mature side.  I think she was going for elegant instead…missed by just a bit.  Needs to dress half way between this and Lizbeth…more youthful, modern, and with a bit of edge.

  • Allison Woods

The extra fabric in the bodice offends my delicate sensibilites. NEIN!

  • In, she’s divine.

  • Sue_Asponte

She looks like a lovely, generic starlet. From your description (I haven’t seen the movies), that’s what she wanted/needed to achieve. So, IN.

  • OUT. she altered the dress too much, fucking with the proportions. makes her look stumpy, when it’s meant to almost have a drop waisted feel.

  • bailey debruynkops

    boring out

  • amian3

IN. She is just lovely–especially from the side. I think that tall hair isn’t doing her any favors from the front. I like how she is posing sort of simply and naturally–we know from her magazine work that she can bring the fierce but here the posing is so nice. She looks comfortable in her skin.

  • SapphoPoet

    In. Simple and pretty.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    I love it! IN

  • Vanessak69

I’ll say IN although the look is fairly boring and–it must be the hair. She’s a beautiful, striking woman usually but she looks just generically pretty here.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

um, NO.  Have she and Angelina J. been kibitzing about how to have a nice LARGE area for breasts?  OUT.

  • RzYoung

IN, she’s so versatile. I really like her, this dress is fab
