In or Out: Mila Kunis in Christian Dior

Posted on June 22, 2012

Is this sleek and chic, or kind of shapeless and heavy-looking?

Mila Kunis attends premiere of “Ted” in Los Angeles in a Christian Dior dress accessorized with Christian Louboutin shoes and Dior Jewelry.

We know we’re sounding like a broken record lately, but this doesn’t feel very June to us. We’ve been saying that a lot lately and it doesn’t mean that ladies in June should be wearing brightly colored florals everywhere they go. It also doesn’t mean that they can’t wear little black dresses. But this satin-y thing looks more appropriate for the holidays than it does for high summer. Then there’s the fact that it’s a cocktail dress with a bustle. We don’t know what’s going on around the butt area, but that’s not very flattering. She’s too short for a dress like this. If she wants a LBD for the red carpet in June, a simple sleeveless shift with some killer heels and a ponytail would be more than perfect. This just looks heavy, shapeless and overdone to us. Cute shoes, though.

Vote Now!

IN! It’s a perfect LBD! Shut up!

OUT! That’s a total “New Year’s Eve” dress.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s excellent deployment of beige was voted IN by the commentariat.

  • altalinda

    In, she’s making it work.

  • introspective

her face looks gorgeous. hair looks limp, and the dress looks heavy (and that shiny fabric doesnt help), so Mila here is giving me more drab than sleek.

a shame too, as this dress screams missed opportunity to rock a red carpet. if the bottom were a pencil skirt with a peplum I’d have had a totally different reaction…

    • 3boysful

Perfect analysis.  But the shoes are pretty killer!

      • AudreysMom

combined, Audrey and I agree: heavy, non-June dress, limp hair, regardless of great shoes and face = OUT for us

  • OUT

  • Not June, not very flattering and I think her hair needs more body. OUT.

    • EveEve

Out for me too.  But it would have been a passable get up for a  New Year’s Eve party.

  • Yes, a little heavy for June. But still cute and I lovvvvve those shoes… IN!

  • I think its cute…*shrugs* In

  • OUT.  She’s far too lovely a young woman to be saddled with such a lugubrious dress.

    • PeggyOC

That’s the perfect term for it!

    •  Agree… that dress is quite lugubrious! OUT indeed.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Lugubrious, and no fun with those super cute shoes!

        • lugubrious.  i’ll have to work that into conversation.

      • Can I vote whatever you are wearing right now as IN for your use of the word “lugubrious”? Lovely.

    • Tigerfly

      Exactly. Out!

  • It’s not perfect, and it’s still too Black Swan, but she looks sweet and I love the shoes.

  • Cathy S

Out. I don’t like the dress at all and it IS too heavy. The shoes, though, are really cute.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Out.  Agree with all your comments – it’s heavy and bulky.  If it were a bit lighter fabric and more fitted it could have been really cute – it’s got playful potential, which suits the movie.  And her hair and makeup are gorgeous.

    •  Once I read “heavy,” I couldn’t see it any other way. The thing around her waist is weighing her down. You’re right on that it has “playful potential” though!

  • Ezmartin

    In she is werking it

  • annie_wonder

I love the hair, the make-up, the sheer neckline and those shoes but the butt area is just plain bad. OUT.

  • It seems oddly too formal for the event, and very winter months.  It looks like she should be going to a cocktail party after a major Exhibition opening. That’s not a bad thing, just not looking quite season or event appropriate to me. The stiffness of the textile keeps it squarely in TakeMeSeriouslyLand.

  • LOVE the shoes, but the dress is definitely a holiday frock, so it’s Out.

  • If it were more fitted, I’d like it more, even though it is out of season.  Love the shoes. Out

  • belfebe

OUT. She can do better than that.

  • lovelyivy

Out- but it’s an out grading on a curve. This would be an in for plenty of women, but I think I for one hold Mila to a higher standard. That said, those shoes are to die, and I need them in my closet immediately. *sigh*

  • Out, too heavy. I don’t like what’s going on around the waist. Killer shoes though.

  • NYE. And it’s making her bottom-heavy. She’s too teeny to be bottom-heavy!

  • schadenfreudelicious

that look smacks of stiff and sweaty and not in a good way….. 😉

  • julnyes

It is a scroll down issue. The dress is sleek and chic until you hit the waist and then it balloons out into a shapeless and heavy mess. The shoes are fab however.

  • carolynmo

Love the shoes, dislike the dress. It looks hot–I’d be melting in that. But I’m in Missouri, melting anyway.

  • kikisayshi

IN. No matter the season, she looks great!

  • Jessi03

Don’t love the dress, but LOVE the shoes.  Her hair and makeup look cute, too.  IN, I suppose it will have to be!

  • norseofcourse

That dress is going to look amazing with a pair of giant 2013 sunglasses, though.

  • AmandaCathleen

I’m going to have to vote shapeless & heavy looking. She’s really been off her game lately. OUT.

I do love her hair and make up, though. The eye makeup is a little heavy, but sometimes a girl just needs to do a smoky eye.

  • crash1212

I’m saying OUT due to heaviness and sheer panel down to waist (Hate those! Hate!) – although I love hair, make-up and shoes.

  • susu11

Her bum in this dress is making me sad.

I saw her in person once when she was filming ‘Friends with Benefits’ at Grand Central. She’s so pretty! This dress isn’t doing her justice.

  • Gorgeous girl, what a face, but that dress is all wrong. Heavy, bustled and peplumed, and doing bad things to her adorable body. Killer shoes though. Have to go with an OUT since I really hate that dress on her.

  • OUT, for all the reasons you listed. Love the shoes though.

  • Lilithcat

You are 100% correct, on all counts.  To paraphrase the Duchess, it’s the wrong dress, on the wrong girl, at the wrong time.

  • PeggyOC

Out.  Kind of clunky and I hate that sheer v-front thing that’s been going on.  Those shoes deserve a better outfit.

  • rissa42210

Out.  Her hair and face look nice, though.

  • OUT but love the shoes

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m sweating just looking at her. OUT.

  • snarkykitten

it looks like something you’d wear to that awful Tom Cruise movie premier, not some dumb raunchy comedy featuring talking bears

ok so I hate modern culture, bite me

  • sleepycat

even as a holiday outfit, this is ugly, OUT

  • jw_ny

    Satin…ugh.  I’m sick of it.

  • sherrietee

Out.  Totally wrong season. Not to mention, I’m really just not a fan of the dress regardless of season.

  • kelsita421

those shoes are fun! but nothing here is June. OUT.

  • Bri H

Out. It looks stiff, heavy, and a little home-sewn.

  • Out – love the shoes tho…

  • RedRaven617

    In for me

  • JimMcC

From the neck up and the ankle down, this is sheer perfection. But that top is a little figure skater and bottom just looks HEAVY.

  • Scarlet39

I was on the fence until I saw the back.  Who the heck wants to look like they have a big ass?

  • Chiming in to say that I love those shoes!   But taffeta and chiffon?  Meh.

  • MilaXX

OUT! That’s a total “New Year’s Eve” dress.

  • Well, I don’t agree with the shapeless comment, but I also don’t like it. Too shiny and a little…outdated? Like something Paris Hilton would wear? Just a little trashy? I can get behind trashy as a vibe, but it doesn’t feel like that’s what she’s going for. It feels like she’s going for sophisticated and got off at the wrong exit.

I do like the shoes. Maybe with different jewelry and hair. I also hate that hair. OUT.

  • VioletFem

OUT. Peplums and a bustle on a cocktail dress do not work at all.

  • Anna Tree

Everything that Dior produces is an OUT until we finally get a Raf Simons collection. This dress is no exception. (Sucks to have a Dior contract in this someone badly designed period of the house’s history.)

  • MK03

IN. How friggin’ cute is she??

  • SapphoPoet

OUT. New Year’s Eve dress. It looks heavy for June (and sort of frumpy, actually).

  • OUT – too heavy and sullen.

  • lrhoff

    Out….WAY too heavy!

  • MarissaLG

    What? This is great! IN!

  • j_anson

Yuck, OUT. Shapeless, cheap-sating, boring design.

  • IN (marginally) – she really is gorgeous and the shoes are fab

  • Lisa Dugan

In, she’s pulling it off.  But it’s taking a lot of work on her part to do it.  It’s just too heavy and too much for June and for her petite figure in general.

  • Jangle57

New Year’s Eve it is, though the shoes are great – OUT

  • teensmom99

Everything you say but IN because she makes it work and the top of the dress is GREAT on her.  Of course, I would kill for the shoes.

  • BazoDee

I agree with all you’ve said but it still doesn’t push it into out territory for me so IN.

  • Lina_bee

Out. Tulip skirts only work on people who are approximately nine feet tall (or who can fake it convincingly, a la Ru Paul). If this were winter, then I would be on board with everything from waist up, but we’re not in Sydney right now.

  • AlexisPayne

The bodice and shoes work, the skirt is kind of a mess. Love the hair and make-up. Overall, OUT, that skirt is too distracting.

  • lojoso

    Too shiny. Too asstastic. OUT.

  • BrooklynBomber

Ech. She’s got the magic but the dress does her no favors.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Hate the dress, love the shoes, not crazy about the hair and makeup …. so OUT, I guess.

  • RebeccaKW

Out.  That dress is awful.  She doesn’t look terrible, but she doesn’t look great.  God face and hair, though.  And the shoes are divine.

  • aimee_parrott

OUT for sure.  I don’t even think this is a good New Year’s Eve dress.  What it looks like is the auf dress from a PR LBD challenge.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

One again, she’s wearing a dress that looks like you could animate the back with farts.

  • Thathoodwink

SHE is beautiful; I love the shoes. The skirt looks like some sort of floatation device that is partially inflated.

  • Amy T.

She is absolutely gorgeous, but the dress is NYE material.  Out.

  • blixtme

Out. Love the shoes, but the dress is way too heavy. It doesn’t seem to be to big for her but it’s giving that impression.

  • Out.  She’s clearly still suffering from the staggeringly poor judgement that landed her in that movie to begin with.  It’s June for [email protected]’s sake, and has been horrifically hot.  She’s going to have the worst satin-sweats ever.  Great shoes, though.

  • melanie0866

I liked the dress until I read your commentary.  Now I agree.  Love the shoes.

  • trisker

HATe this.  although the shoes are cute.

  • yetanotherLaura

OUT.  If Mila can’t make it look good for summer, nobody can, and IMO she clearly can’t.  Plus the skirt sticks out oddly in the back; the bustle should make it drape over it, not stick out at a 45 degree angle.m

  • formerlyAnon

Out. It *ought* to be sleek & chic & the bodice is, but somehow the skirt is making her look hippy, or a little zaftig, or some other such thing which she is very definitely not.

  • A_Rimbaud

Out. Such a beautiful gal, such an unfortunate choice of dress.

  • Warrior89

In.  WIth an “eh”.  Nothing wrong with it, just not as gorgeous as she is.

  • littlemac8

Out – the dress is doing her no favors.  Shoes are great but cannot save the look!

  • PinkLemon

hating the sheer panel, the heaviness of the whole look…..too holiday-y. OUT

  • Funkykatt

    Over and OUT

  • SophieCollier

OUT.  It’s not that it’s a horrible dress, it’s just not flattering on her at all.  Somehow, it’s managed to make her look wide through the waist and somewhat potbellied, although clearly she is a tiny woman.  If the fabric laid a bit flatter and crisper, and if the waistline actually hit her at her waist instead of a couple of inches above it, it might not be so huge looking.

  • I’ll give it an OUT.  I agree that it’s way too winter-looking for June, and just too heavy and large on her overall.  I do like the shoes, though.

  • greyhoundgirl

OUT.  Too much peplum, too ,much skirt.

  • Joyce VG

Oh Mila. I cannot vote OUT (though wanting to.) IN.

  • olsonam

With the way it goes from her breasts to her stomach, it makes her stomach look almost as wide as her breasts.

  • anotherEloise

Those shoes and her legs look fabulous.

  • In. The dress is ugly, but she isn’t.

  • MoHub

    Out. Makes her look squat

    But the shoes are fabulous.

  • She is *almost* pulling off satin, which is impressive.  And I love the shoes.  Sadly, though, still an OUT.

  • Magatha

Great shoes. Heavy, clunky dress even for October, much less June. But check out her little elbow. So soft and pretty and not like mine at all! Jeez, I’m old.

  • phrenk

I like the top half, dislike the bottom.  Since I dislike the shoes, too, I’m going with OUT.

  • msdamselfly

  • TieDye64

OUT. Heavy and shapeless. What is going on? So many dark, heavy looking outfits in the middle of summer. What happened to fun and fresh? I’m befuddled.

  • unbornfawn

  • Neck up: gorgeous!! The rest: Do over!

  • AWS

Not feeling it.  Looks too big on her.  Baby’s got a poofy back.

  • LauraWL

Out. I read a recent interview Mila did and she noted that after Black Swan she regained her weight in places she wasn’t expecting, (which, take that as you may. I still think she looks fabulous, esp. her legs) and I’ve noticed that she tends to dress to try and hide her “problem” areas nowadays, which, net-net is here dressing awkwardly bc she hasn’t figured out what works for her. $0.02.

  • OUT – sweating just looking at it

  • EEKstl

OUT.  I could never give an IN to anything with a bustle.  Also right about the heaviness of the satin for June.  COVETING those shoes, tho.

  • judybrowni

the designers must be pushing their fall lines: so ya want free dresses, celebs, you’re not gonna be dressing for the heat

  • KathKo

Well, have you checked the weather, lately ? Halloween’s just around the block…

  • Out. she looks fat, and that’s certainly not true.

  • Bleh.

  • Out! This looks terrible, all wrinkled and puckered and yes, heavy.

  • marilyn

Out.  It is too heavy and big for her.  She has a nice figure and this makes her look bottom heavy.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

  • mjude

  • nancy

Out, the dress makes her look stumpy and heavy. IN for the shoes!

  • CarolinLA

    She looks like Morticia’s bridesmaid.

  • i adore those shoes!!!   the dress, no.  and the jewelry should be much more obvious.  i had to search for it.  and that makeup is so overbearing, it’s hard to see her face in there.  so i guess that’s an out, though i hate to do it to such fabulous pumps!

  • jan lee

  • OUT. I think the waist hits too high making her already little figure seem even smaller.

Almost an IN on the shoes alone though. God I covet those.

  • demidaemon

I like the top half, hate the the bottom half–too shapeless, wrinkled, and big. I love the shoes, but find this completely inappropriate for the season. OUT, by a margin.

  • librarygrrl64

The latter. OUT. Kinda diggin the shoes, though.

  • OUT. It’s not flattering on her at all.

  • Sara__B

Good thing it’s cut to her naval or I’d think she was an 11-year-old. Such an odd combination of breast-exposing and shape-obscuring. OUT.

  • Aly Light

  • Snailstsichr

out. She is way to pretty to wear a dress that makes her behind look as big as Texas (among other flaws).

  • Out, I like the shoes, but everything else (dress, hair, makeup) is just too heavy.

  • Mexxoo

Oh, I’m sorry, Mila.  Had this dress been done in a softer fabric, it probably would have looked better.  And a different color.  However, as it is, you look a bit like the teen great-niece of Elvira or Vampira, playing dress-up, looking forward to the day that you, too, can be a sexy, vampy mistress of the dark!

    So, um, OUT.  🙁

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

IN.  Don’t love the dress, but she’s pulling it off.  Hair and makeup are well done, and those shoes are killer!

  • Love the shoes. Hate the dress. Nyet. OUT.

Why do ladystars suddenly feel the need to wear daytime clothing that provides me with sufficient visual information to guess the distance between their breasts?

  • Hair, makeup, and shoes are all good…but that dress is just ugly. OUT.

  • I don’t like the fabric all that much, but the dress has a pretty shape, and those shoes are fab.

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  It’s just the wrong dress (but at least she has the right shoes).  She is kinda making it work, but she shouldn’t be trying.

  • Lexie

Is that first sentence referring to her hair or her dress? Because it could really be applied to either, which makes me sad.

  • Aurumgirl

Bustle-y taffeta box pleat = yes, your ass looks too big in that skirt.

  • Bailey Debruynkops

  • kimmeister

Out. Great shoes, but the dress is thickening her midsection.

  • OUT.  Shoes are cute, dress is fug.  She looks great from the neck up, though.

  • It may be heavy for June but she still looks gorge!  And those shoes are fab!

  • SorayaS

In! Other than the fabric being a bit stiff, I don’t see why this can’t work for summer. It’s short, sleeveless, has a bit of flounce and has that sheer panel to take away some heaviness (but would be hideously unflattering on almost everyone else). Hair and makeup look good and those shoes are killer and could carry the IN on their own to be honest.

  • Look we get it – you did’t get to wear the black tutu. Move on.

  • IN! she is killuh in this.

  • DaveUWSNYC

To me it looks like couch fabric – too heavy. Good shoes though, but OUT.

  • out. i don’t know who that dress would look good one, but it’s not her.

  • saanrio

OUT!  Had it been done in a lighter fabric, even in black, I would have called it flirty and floaty.  In this, it is drab and heavy and shapeless.  Blah.

  • granddelusion

Shapeless and heavy-looking. Out. And why is she making all these crappy movies?

  • Beth G

    Out.  VERY heavy.

  • Liverpoolgirl

    Out! Home Ec project

  • m0r0

blech. she’s letting her russian show.

  • lesmaha

  • ThaliaMenninger

Out. It looks like she’s wearing an inflatable dress, which is never a good idea unless you’re Lady Gaga.

  • Rei Carter

my first thought on seeing this was: Sad Cupcake.

    So, out.

  • LambeeBaby

LOVE the shoes, hate the dress. It looks stiff and heavy and I am not digging the peplum. Its a good thing she is so hot. It compensates for the yuck of the dress.

  • Sally Brownson

Out: Love the shoes, but the dress isn’t flattering.

  • Shapeless and heavy. OUT.

  • The shoes are super cute, and she’s definitely workin’ it, but the dress is just kinda weird and unflattering. I say OUT.

  •  She looks like she’s covering a fluffy doggie tail. OUT.

  • That absolutely 110% looks like something someone once made on Project Runway.

  • MemHey

Out. Too much puffy butt. Great shoes tho.

  • Louise Bryan

OUT.  Odd looking, heavy fabric, too much sheen.  Nice shoes, though.

  • leave_Blake_alone

IN, agreed with the comment below that she’s making it work. She’s owning it and the shoes are great. (Agreed that it is a little too winter-holiday, though.)

  • Judih1

Out – even if she wore it on New Year’s Eve it is not very flattering

  • nancymae

IN. The shoes and her “I got this” attitude seal the deal for this look.

  • OUT for me too. The material looks a bit cheap and is not doing her lovely figure any favors.

  • Caaro3

    Out.  What you said, TLo.

  • GTrain

    The shoes are cute. OUT

  • NurseEllen

OUT on this one, she is not pulling it off at all. The shoes are fab and–gasp!–they fit, too!

  • charlotte

Wait. Who was that? I was way too distracted by the giant teddy bear.
Oh right, Mila. That’s an O-U-T for the reasons you mentioned.

  • Judy_S

OUT, I guess. She should save this look for a snowy day.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    OUT on this Winter Wonderland!

  • Automatic OUT to anyone wearing anything from any designer’s “Fall/Winter” collection or anything that looks fall/winter.  Until fall.

  • Out. It completely obscures her figure. I’m not even sure I’d like this in winter, to be honest.

  • Reminds me of a cheap prom dress and I’m not crazy about that 60’s country star ‘do either.

  • guest2visits

She looks great in a LBD, maybe not this one. Is this the second bustle for Mila ?  Something about the vee is not working – it’s
making her look wide. When she turns to the side and it can’t be seen; the dress looks better.

  • golspie

The waist’s too high but her expression is so seductive and winning… IN

  • Too stiff, and it makes her look shorter. Also, not super flattering in the rear region. OUT.

  • ccm800

out. WTF?! it’s SUMMER! this one is not aging well to me. Her face is going odd places.

  • alyce1213

OUT.  Very bad LBD.  Maybe in a softer fabric, no peplum, less stiff, less plunge, longer. But that would be a different LBD, wouldn’t it?

  • cleep1000

  • Top – good, shoes – good, hair/make up – good, bottom – not so much. Still puts it as an IN overall.

  • Candigirl1968

    OUT.  Too heavy.

  • Jessica O’Connell

It looks good until she turns to the side…the butt area is a little weird… I agree, it looks kind of heavy so I’d say an OUT.

  • “New Years Eve Dress”…spot on! out…

  • IN.

  • Love the shoes, but don’t love the dress.

  • mila_8

Out. I get the top and love the hair, makeup and shoes, but the bulk of the skirt is insane.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Nope.  Heavy, old and TOO HOT FOR JUNE!  I live in the mountains of Utah for crissakes and it’s 100 today!  Who dresses these people?

  • The dress is definitely heavy and shapeless, but GOD, I covet those shoes. Out all the same.

  • oatmealpie

    Total scroll-up fug.
