Like so many others – Blanchett, Swinton, Saldana (okay, maybe not that many others ) – Lucy Liu is in that rarefied group of people we find it very difficult to criticize. In fact, when one of our PhD-level dress-wearers puts something on that isn’t working for us, we tend to immediately think “Is it us? Are we just not getting the brilliance behind this look?”
Believe us when we say, that’s not a sentiment that pops into our heads often.

But really: Is it us?
The shape is great on her; very dramatic. But we really don’t think that old-bra color works against her skin tone at all and we tend to think the bottom half of this dress looks like a cheap and highly flammable bedspread and curtain set.
But then you take a step back, blur your eyes a bit, and she looks lovely. It’s like that optical illusion that goes back and forth from an old lady’s face to a young girl’s face. Depending on the angle, this is either pretty or ugly. Kittens make the call.
Voting on Keira Knightley’s somewhat similarly frilly and frippy dress is still wide open.
