In or Out: Keira Knightley in Valentino

Posted on June 19, 2012

What do we all think of this:

Keira Knightley attends the premiere of “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” during the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival in a Valentino dress.

Valentino Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Katryn Kruger (IMG)

We’re generally fans of her style choices. It’s not that she’s never made a bad choice; just that her bad choices are few and far between, and besides, she can make a bad dress look better.

And while we really love the color story on this dress, we have to admit that there is such a thing as too much embellishment and that poor fabric looks like it’s screaming under the weight of all that frippery. The bodice is just about perfect, but there’s just way too much of that junk on her junk. If they just removed all the silver elements, this might be toned down enough to work for us.

Also, if there’s anyone on the planet who can wear a wreath in their hair and not look like a smacked ass, it’s probably Keira. Even so, we’re not convinced that she doesn’t look like a smacked ass.

Don’t get us wrong; there are parts of this look that are very pretty. But overall, it looks sloppy and weird on her.

Vote Now!

IN! She’s a fashion fairy!

OUT! Twee as fuck.

The voting on Emma Stone’s Rorschach Dress looked like this:

But we’re pretty sure the final vote came down to OUT.

    In so in!

    • Sobaika

Definitely. She’s doing full on Ren Faire Chic.

      • charlotte

That’s why she got the lead in that Pride and Prejudice movie. Granted, not only that, but that stuff suits her.

        • samitee

Yes exactly! She looks like a Regency painting of nymph or some shit and it’s totally working for her.

          • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

“A Regency painting of nymph or some shit..”  I not only spit out my iced tea but developed a giant Internet crush on you for saying that.

          • charlotte

The Dowager Countess just said that!

          • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Ah, see, I thought it was Professor McGonagle.  Shows you how far behind the times I am…

          • the dress looks better on her than on the

          • MarissaLG

Comments like those are reasons why I so thoroughly enjoy the TLO comment section.

        • Too bad they dressed her like a servant for 90% of that picture. That scene where she’s at Pemberly standing in front of a window, bathed in sunlight is gorgeous. The whole film was beautifully shot, which made the costuming choices for her character all the more lamentable. It made me feel bad for her, stuck dressed as a dull slatternly scullery maid, and I don’t even like Keira Knightly!

  • IN FOR SURE! This is gorgeous!

    • 3boysful

    • Totally IN. There are few people who make interesting choices for hair in Hollywood. I wish the dress were longer or shorter though.

    • EveEve

      Beautiful!  IN!
[but oh, I wish the shoes had some sparkle to them]

  • drdirection

I think the dress looks better on her than on the model.

    •  Agreed. It looks like someone embroidered directly on the model’s torso… The bodice looks too sheer or maybe it’s because of the light… But it’s far more prettier on Keira.

    • MoHub

It helps that she has the waistline at her waist rather than in the halfway Empire position as it appears on the model, and I also like that Keira’s version is full length. She just seems a little wispy to be supporting that much embellishment; I think the dress needs a girl with a little more body.

  • Terri Mabry Pendleton

i think it’s really pretty, but the wreath takes it to a ren faire place, and that is never good.

    •  ren faire hair and celibate librarian shoes.  yuck.

      • Tea

I vehemently hate the shoes, but I’ll take the dress+makeup+hair as a Keira-sized dose of interesting. Anymore fly aways though…

      • makeityourself

Yes, the librarian shoes. From Naturalizer with a faux leather upper. The wreath didn’t bother me but those shoes are the ultimate in scroll down fug.

        • Judih1

  • In ! I love the wreath and the embroidery ! True when you say fairy, this could be a look from Cicely Mary Baker’s Flower Fairies, in a modern, adult, but still dreamy way. Could get rid of the silver stuff, thought.

    • Agreed – also not the biggest fan of the silly putty on her feet, but it makes sense to make them VERY lowkey with all that going on in the dress.  IN

  • I’m an OUT. Soooo close to an IN but that headgear is a bridge too far.

  • Being that it is Midsummer eve and this whole look brings to mind fairies, I am inclined to vote IN. Also I can never resist Keira.

  • megohd

I like the dress, but not on her. She looks colorless.

  • LongTall_Sally

IN!  She looks lovely.  The only thing I don’t like is the shoes.

  • GypsyHowell

What? No mention of the perfectly awful shoes? I can get behind the dress. I almost really like it. The shoes kill it for me. They look like my 85 year old mom’s pumps. And of course — nude. Never been a fan of the pink-eye makeup, but she still looks pretty. Except for those pumps. Those are a No.

    • Exactly!  It almost works for me, until you get to those gawd-awful, drab, boring, hideous putty colored shoes!!!!  I’m pretty sure my 86-year-old grandmother has a few pairs like this, except in this crap color.  Almost in, but the shoes tip it over into the out category for me.

    • Lilak

Totally with you on the shoes:  they do scream Senior Day Sale at the Naturalizer outlet, don’t they?   (Really surprised TLo had no comment on them – a sign of the apocalypse?!)
The dress, even with the neutral background I tend not to like on Miss Knightley, is very pretty on her.  I think it just suffers from poor lighting in these particular photos:  by comparison, this gown sings in the catwalk pic.

    • LuisaNL

Agreed, those shoes are an eye sore. I don’t hate the dress but I don’t think this color is her friend. She looks consumptive.
      Yeah, no, that’s an out.

  • Erin Nice

Admittedly, I’m incredibly biased when it comes to Keira Knightley anyway, but I really do think she’s IN. 🙂

    • giiiirrrr

Yeah, me too.  She’s really gorgeous and because of that she can get away with so many things, including that head wreath.  The neutral color of the underlayer of the dress is divine on her.

  • pookiesmom

    Love this! In!

  • geans

I love both the hair and the dress separately, but with that dress the wreath is a little too much fuss. Overall, lovely.

  • Out (and that hurts to say as I agree that Keira can pull off just about anything)

  • Jaspreet5

She looks amazing. I say she’s an IN!

  • MarissaLG

IN! Beautiful gown and she can obviously rock it. The hem isn’t perfect, but this get’s a definite in. Love the hair as well.

  • She looks like Snow White, if Snow White came into some money and got Valentino to design a dress for her. And I don’t think many people could pull this off, but she totally can. LOVE. In.

  • RzYoung

IN i think she looks exquisite and as a massive fan of embroidery I can’t get passed how stunning the work is on that garment. Inny IN in

  • Athenrein

In. So so much better than so many weird skin-toned I’m covered in silver flowers dresses.

  • In from the back, out from the front. I don’t like that treatment around the shoulders, the gathered bits or whatever. It looks fine as the straps in the back, but I don’t like what it’s doing to the front.

I like the hair, although it seems to be saying “Cast me in another period drama NOW!” Which I would be perfectly fine with. 🙂

  • IN. That dress is gorgeous. I think it should be either shorter or longer, the hair is a bridge too far and the shoes are fug. But still, in.

  • kalisa

I’d like it a lot better if she were standing in front of a solid-colored wall.

  • In_Stitches

Sure, the wreath is a bit much and the shoes in that color and shape look orthopedic, but the dress is gorgeous.  IN!

  • Jessica Rowe

I love this. She’s a woodland princess.  IN.

  • Clairiari

    In! She looks great!

  • gdougs

Ooh, I like! She looks like a fairy! IN.

  • lchopalong

  • Call me Bee

I disagree.  I think it’s a really pretty dress, and the perfect color for all that embellishment.  And perfect on her.  The hair compliments the dress, giving Kiera a sort of wood nymph look, as does her makeup.  She was very smart not to wear any other jewelry, to let the dress shine on it’s own, nor does she take attention away from it with her shoes.  IN all the way!  She looks beautiful.

  • in, but with reservations. I actually like her hair, even with the flyaways, but the dress looks like my great gran’s thanksgiving table cloth. fond memories? yes. Dress form? not so much.

  • Lindsay Smith

IN!!!  I love the red wreath.  The whole thing looks gorgeous and intentional.

  • bobbi32

OUT – She looks like she is dying of consumption on the 1970’s couch in someone’s basement.

    • luciaphile

She looks stoned in a couple of the photos. I kind of like the dress though. In.

  •  She looks absolutely gorgeous! The barely-there color, the sticky-sweet styling ~ it suits her personality so well, in fact, she is probably the only star I can think of who could pull off this over the top “I live under a mushroom at the bottom of your garden” kind of dress.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m just not liking this on Keira-as TLo remarked, the embroidery looks too heavy for the underlying fabric;plus, the embroidery, while lovely, reminds me of upholstery fabric.

  • jw_ny

IN, but it is way over embellished.

That LA film fest backdrop doesn’t help the look at all…looks better against the blue sky screens.

  • If the silver elements were cream colored I’d like it so much more.  Looks like it is probably prettier in person.  I like the wreath.  The shoes are ugly.

  • mellbell

Very in. I love everything about this look (apart from her slightly stoned expression in the second picture).

  • CozyCat

A tepid “in” because it’s an unusual dress and she pulls it off.

I completely agree that the problem is in the dress itself–the silver embroidery.  But I think it’s because it clashes with the red/earth tone colors of the rest of the dress.  That makes it stand out and makes the detailing seem like too much.

  • Jangle57

She does look better in it than the model but I think the dress is ugly. Keira is in BUT the dress is OUT

  • I adore the dress; I do not adore the Midsummer Night’s Dream hair. But I think I’m going with an IN here.

  • j_anson

I loathe and despise Keira Knightly and her precious little pouty-face, so, uh. But really. A person as naturally pretty as her should do better than this. The hair is awful and the skirt just looks heavy at that length; I think it could have worked as a long skirt with less embellishment, or a short skirt with that amount of embellishment, but this combination: no. And the shoes really are awful, and I don’t usually care about shoes that much.

  • RedRaven617

The whole look is so, so… Heidi! All she needs is an old geezer in a white beard on her arm. Out.

  • OUT. JC Penney Ren Faire drapery line.

  • in!  British pastoral… it’s her birthright.

  • IN! Her attitude carries the whole look “Look bitches, I’m happy, engaged, and wearing a wreath. Eat it!”

  • Candigirl1968

I think it would look better if it wasn’t floor length.  It’s just a little too much of a good thing.

  • Super duper IN!!!!!!!!

  • jennmarie19

I think a qualified IN! I love the dress to pieces. Not so much the hair.

  • Kristy Evans

OUT. Looks like Heidi (as in the little mountain girl from the books) goes to the Oscars.

    • kimmeister

My thoughts exactly.  I dislike everything but her makeup.  OUT.

    • FloTom

I think she looks like she is wearing a salad on crepe.  BTW – normally I love everything she wears.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

IN! Even though I actually agree with some of the negative comments, I think she’s pulled it off.
The checkerboard background is an OUT! though. Who comes up with those things?

  • KuriousKat

Totally in! Really beautiful in a Millais’ Ophelia kind of way. And I like the silver. Just wish she had worn different colored shoes – the silly putty shoes are awful (the model wore silver shoes which worked much better).

  • TheOriginalLulu

It isn’t my favorite dress in the world, but it looks far better on her than on the model, so for that alone she gets an IN from me.

The hair, however, is disappointing. This is how my hair will look tomorrow when it’s 97 degrees in New York and I just need to get it up off of my neck and face. I tend to think that headbands are for pulling your hair back when you’re washing your face, but it’s not bad here. It’s just that the hair itself is such a mess.

  • Aly Light

  • Love it, but no wreath, please, and I would have a metallic shoe, with hair down.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind the hair up, but I think a small antique like earring would work better. Completely agree on the metallic shoe.

  • IN! She looks like a magical fairy princess!

  • jilly_d

  • J D

So IN.  It’s a lot of dress, but Keira is pulling it off.  I bet the Fanning sisters are looking at these photos and sharpening their knives. Keira is schooling them on the whole woodland nymph look.

  • IN!  i love it!  i think she looks really, really pretty here.

  • Larkin21

I love the thumbnail picture that shows her looking over her shoulder. But full body, especially from the front, I just don’t think it’s a flattering dress. For all the reasons you guys listed. I do like the hair, though … including the wreath. OUT but barely.

  • The dress is gorgeous. But I am not loving the Christmas fireplace mantel decor in her hair.

  • TheLaurenJean

Definite In! Though I do wish she had stuck with the Runway shoes. But Miss Knightley looks fantastic!

  • AllisonAndStuff

I totally love it, and I HATE shit like that. In.

  • I actually like it on her. Maybe because I know she is likely one of the 5 people on the planet who could come close to pulling it off. I vote IN!

  • C.

In!  She looks like a pre-Raphealite painting!

  • BrooklynBomber

It’s a weird dress, but she probably looks as good in it as its possible to look. Ridiculously wrong shoe, though.
    In by a margin.

  • Dhammadina

In. The backdrop is part of the problem, and she can’t control that.

  • jmorino08

I think the head wreath was a bridge too far. Made it seem too close to a wood nymph costume. The dress is very interesting, in the best way and the up do works but she needed to make the rest of her (make up and accessories) more simplified to balance out the look.

  • rougeort

Wow. On anyone else I would crack a Tinkerbell joke but she looks gorgeous. IN!

  • rumcg66

OUT. Smacked ass with that wreath

  • fringebenefit

Enthusiastic IN–she’s pulling off this look in a big way.

  • In. She’s gorgeous and knows how to war the shit out of a dress like this, even if it isn’t perfect. Love the hair, LOVE the make-up. Hate the shoes, but whatever, minor grapple.

  • IN – but she does look like she’s going to a costume garden party rather than a film premier.

  • nannypoo

I think it’s beautiful. Her hair looks bad, the orange eyeshadow is making her look like her allergies are acting up, and the shoes aren’t adding anything. The pattern on the skirt is a bit too fallopian, but I love it anyway.

  • Rebecca Johnson

I’m going with a split decision: in from the waist up, out from the waist down. I really like the softer hair on her.
    Those shoes are awful.

  • Christina Brennan

In!  I love the whole look, although the length seems a bit off to me.

  • We like it.

  • plinkiedoodle

Out!  She can do better than this…and I like the wreath.

  • MilaXX

Small IN. This is not a home run, but it’s not quite bad enough for an OUT. I would have preferred earrings over the wreath.

  • IN – Summery flair with some Shakespearean playfulness added to the mix. WERQQQQ that forest Elizabethan couture Keira, WERQQQ IT

  • BeeBeauNYC

IN – she looks fantastic, as usual. Christina Hendricks, please look no further than to the box next to you to see how one should dress for success!

  • SophieCollier

IN.  She’s a bit of a fairy princess and she looks good buried in flowers. 🙂

  • IN.  She looks like a Heidi figurine. The Alpine girl, not the Klum.

  • IN. There are a lot of things I would change, but…. I love the wreath, so whatever.

  • Trisha26

Make it mid-calf or even shorter without the silver elements and it’s an In.

  • Joyce VG

I like it. IN.  “smacked ass” hahahahahahaha!  love you TLo

  • AlexisPayne

Gorgeous fashion pixie!!! My only complaint is what happens around the feet, the shoes don’t work and the hem either needs to go slightly shorter or slightly longer.

  • pass that dress down to Carey Mulligan, please. because keira that hair and that dress are NOT working for you. OUT.

  • l3icest3r

  • ConnieBV

IN. She looks beautiful. Sometimes a woman doesn’t need to look fierce. This is dreamy and soft and sweet, and frankly, it’s nice to see someone pull that off that I don’t want to smack silly (I’m looking at you, Drew).

  • Bozhi

It’s summer in Southern Cal, and this works.  I get it.  In.

  • Lilithcat

I have no idea.  I am totally distracted by the “Magical Mormon Underwear” ad that pops up on the left side of my screen.

  • I vote IN. Is it my favorite look of hers? No. But I still think it looks mighty good on her, or she is making it look good. Either way, it’s an IN.

  • the_valkyrie

IN!! And love the flowers in her hair. I think she’s verging on twee, but she’s not there yet.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

This dress probably looks amazing in person, but it does not photograph well — either on the model or on Kiera.

  • In. I like it!

  • IN. Fairy Princess, in a good, not Disney, way.

  • I love it! IN!

  • cheesebomb

Out. I just don’t think you can modernize Snow White’s look effectively.

  • Lina_bee

God, if only it weren’t beige. I’d like to see a version done on silver fabric because that beige is entirely horrible. She gets an in for commitment to the look and for selling it as much as it can be sold. But she gets an out for it being yet another horrible Valentino from that same depressing Valentino collection.

  • Love it. In.

  • kelsita421

    Love everything about this. IN!

  • I would love it if it were in a better background color–that taupe makes her look a bit like a corpse. The frippery doesn’t bother me–it’s interesting. Though, a smile might be nice. She’s sort of adding to the corpse theme with the cranky vampire face.

  • Bridget Dierks

I love the whole variety of embellishments! I think the headband is fun and whimsical, as well. IN from me!

  • Lizzyisi

She’s on my “Celebrities I Find Unpleasant at All Times” list but she usually *looks* very very good. This, I think, is too long, too over-wrought, and off-balance. The bodice, even with all that embroidery, is much more casual than that full-length, heavy formal, straight skirt. The styling is fine–dull shoes, but no jewelry was a good choice–still I say OUT.

  • Snailstsichr

In. An ethereal summer look. And her posture is so much better than that of the the model,  it makes the dress look so much better. (except I liked the model’s shoes better)

  • In. Love, love, love the dress. So much that it overcomes any minor quibbles about the wreath or shoes.

  • Nolalala

In…she looks like a lovely woodnymph

  • ballerinawithagun

In. The silver is a little bit glaring but that may just be the photo. Not sloppy at all. Love the embroidery instead of digital.

  • anotherkate

In! She looks like Fashion Mother Earth. Hate those shoes, though.

  • In! I think this is lovely. Like Heidi all grown up. And those cheekbones! Dang!

  • mhleta

Pretty? PRETTY?!? Pearls before swine, bitches! Take a good long look because I doubt this sort of atelier work will be around for much longer. Don’t you want to see it up close? Don’t you want to see a stop-motion video of the process? Don’t you want to want to know how many hours of sweat, pain, cramped hands and meticulous expertise went into creating this divine robe? But no, still we’re not pleased. And not for nothing, but you can’t just say “ass” in the presence of such inspired glory! Avert your eyes, sinners. We’re not worthy. (“Pretty.” Whatever.)

    • AthenaJ

I love your tirade, mhleta. Yes, this is an example of how much work USED to go into clothes, before we put quantity over quality and wound up with mass produced crap that barely lasts through a season.

  • In… but I think she’s a bit too pale for that dress, and the shoes are bad.

  • Lisa Salmon

In definitely.  She looks adorable, although I totally agree about taking off the silver – it would make the dress so much more delicate.

  • Reneesance

I think she looks pretty fabulously romantic.  I don’t even want to smack her for the wreath.

  • AmandaCathleen

At first glance I loved this (and I still love it on the model) but those shoes are just TRAGIC. If this was floor length on Keira, or if it hit her where it does on the model and she had better shoes it would be an A+. As is, it’s kind of… awkward. And yet, overall I still like it.

Long-winded way of saying IN, I guess.

  • oh god, OUT.  out.  shitty mess is what first came to mind and i’m sticking with it.

  • TropiCarla

Ugh. I love her but hate this dress. It’s an OUT for me.

  • CheriCPat

Are you crazy?  This is as IN as I’ve ever seen in be!

  • crash1212

Hmmm. IN, I think. I wish it weren’t so taupe-tastic, but I like the embelishments and I think she’s totally rocking the hair-wreath. Perfect make-up. My only quibble is I wish she’d done something more interesting with the shoes. Putty colored round-toed pumps would not have been my first choice. Shouda done a silver something.

  • AWS

Wow. They made a dress out of Courtney Love’s morning sickness from 1994.

  • Deedles

    UGH. Cross-stitch sampler.

  • nancylee61

She is so, so pretty in an elegant, quiet sort of way. But I hate this dress. Out.

  • sleepycat

I like it, sorta, a lot, um…I just go with the first three commentors and say IN

  • Sara__B

This is a hard one. I applaud her interesting choice, and that she looks MUCH better than the model and knows how to make designer clothes come alive off the runway. I don’t like the “here are my lady bits” parts of the embellishment, the hair wreath, makeup, or shoes, or her trademark one-note facial expression. OUT, sort of.

  • Snarky_Amber

    Love it, love her. IN.

  • JimMcC

Sweet Christ on a WHAT? This is HIDEOUS! I don not understand you people with your in votes. You have smoked too much of the crack. This is OUT-er than Bruce Vilanch.

  • Kate4queen

IN, she looks lovely apart from her lack of smile.

  • introspective

Sorry girl. Not feeling it. Youre pretty but that dress and hair just arent. OUT

  • lordandtaylor

What do you wear to the opening of a film already panned by critics. Yep, it would be this dress. Out.

  • msdamselfly

IN  Pretty except the back is unflattering

  • I irrationally love her because she is just so gorgeous and I like her movies so I say in but i like her more then the dress so she is doing most of the heavy lifting

  • guest2visits

She looks beautiful in this; I would love it completely if it were as short as it appears on the model (ankle length).
Love what she did with the hair, matches the whimsy of the dress – which is why she should have taken a chance on something
more interesting than the pair of shoes she’s wearing. Like the model’s.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

love love love the dress, hate the shoes and makeup. IN.

  • i think it’s the beige, not the embroidery that makes it a little less than perfect. but definitely IN.

    • JaneDC

I agree. It’s a weird color, especially with all the stuff on it. I’m hard pressed to think of a color it would work on, but never mind. Maybe the designer couldn’t come up with a better idea either. It’s one of those dresses that leaves me puzzled. Why don’t I like this as much as I would like to like it.

  • bailey debruynkops

  • tallgirl1204

I don’t like the gathered waist.  princess seams, or at least a tailored waist, would have worked better on this, and on her.  Otherwise, she is beautiful.

  • So IN I now am perusing Etsy for a hair wreath.

  • thecitysleeps

I think this looks gorgeous and I love the headband.  I also think Keira can do no wrong, ever though.

  • Liverpoolgirl

    SO FAR IN……its unbelievable

  • unbornfawn

I’ve always liked her with softer hair and am not really bothered by the wreath. The eye make-up looks like she’s tired. The dress. I want to like it. She’s wearing it really well. The fit is perfect. I think the beige base color is too dark and it fights the embroidery, the dress ends up bland and heavy looking. I’m not a fan of the deep cut armholes, it throws off the bodice proportions, that is more of a personal taste issue.  She can do better and we know it. OUT.

  • JaneDC

Not to raise the tone too high here, but the cascade of color kind of reminds me of a Gustav Klimt painting…..

  • SapphoPoet

IN! I love it. I don’t think the embellishment is overdone and I love the wreath. She looks beautiful and lady-like.

My only quibble is that I like the length on the model better, but it’s a small quibble.

  • Jessica Goldstein

IN. I adore it. I assume the inspiration was European folk art, and I think the translation into embroidery on a delicate fabric was brilliant. I’m usually a less-is-more person, but that’s because I don’t usually like the embellishment that much. I think this look if beautiful and memorable. I only wish I could pull off the base color and could afford this myself!

  • Synnamin

As much as I can’t stand her, I have to admit that I love this look on her. In

  • sk8tfan

I love the dress on her. The wreath is a bridge too far. She’s been drinking elderberry wine while dancing barefoot in the moonlight with the fae folk.

  • VicksieDo

I think it’s a stunning, unique look that Keira completely carries off.

  • What is with the freshly punched in eye by baby eye shadow color lately?

  • This is probably a look I would hate on anybody else, but I am really loving it on Kiera. She used to be one of my Irrational Celebrity Hates, but for whatever reason I got over it. I think that dress looks spectacular on her and even though I should hate the hair and head-wreath, I do not. So very IN.

  • AthenaJ

INININININ!!!!!!! This dress would look good on .00001% of the population, and Keira is just the woman to pull it off. She looks absolutely romantic, and I think without the silver the dress would be too boring. I’m also usually not a fan of this color brown, but it does well to highlight the other colors.

  • GTrain

    IN but lose the wreath

  • carpediva

    It looks like bras. OUT.

  • In. She’s a modern day principessa.

  • belfebe

    IN!  She looks gorgeous.

  • I think she looks lovely.  I never say lovely, but it is appropriate here. I do hate the shoes.

  • sherrietee

Like the back, hate the front.  I realize I’m the minority here, but I think it’s out.  Well, unless she stayed the entire time facing the wall and looking back over her shoulder.  Then it’s an in.

  • HobbitGirl

    Stunning. I love it!

  • hilbobaggins

Love!  In.  The back is gorgeous.

    Depressing shoes, though.

  • elleg929

OUT – the dress is the color of dingy bras.

  • I actually really like this. In!

  • What. No. It’s like she was out picking flowers in the Alps and remembered at the last minute she had a film premiere.

  • OUT. The colors are awful on her. She looks like a dirty hot dog.

  • boomchicabowwow

    Blech.  Viseral reaction, sorry.

  • In. I love this look, and if I were blessed with a foot more in the height department, I would be clambering to get this outfit!

  • Sunshine16

In, she is a fashion fairy!  Of course, we must take into account that I’ve always wanted to wear a wreath of flowers in my hair…maybe I’m a smacked ass

  • K

Not loving the shoes. Should have skipped the hair wreath and gone for a low key metallic sandal. Small ruby earrings. But thats just me. I like the dress, its interesting and seems to fit well.

  • trisker

OUT.  The dress is totally overdone, as you say.  Needs a stronger makeup I think — love the hair.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Way too busy of a dress – if the embellishment was toned down and her hair was slightly more polished (same ‘do with less flyaway craziness maybe?) then I could get behind this. But as is? OUT.

  • IN

  • Out – solely because of the stupid flower girl headband. The dress is stunning, and she’s stunning in it. She looks like a Gustave Klimt painting. But that stupid headband just kills it.

  • julnyes

hate the shoes, but everything else is working for me – IN

and dare I say she is looking healthier lately?

  • patticake1601

It’s a pretty dress but it looks stunning under the runway lights, not so much in the light of day.

  • marilyn

Out.  Embroidery aside, the basic color is wrong for her.  It does not work with her porcelain skintone.  Other than that, she can go on a whimsical faerie jaunt if she wants to.  Just in another color.

I am not sure who could wear that color.

  • Carla_Charlton

In.  What a beautiful dress — and it looks great on her.

  • Wellworn

In.  She looks pretty and romantic.   I think she pulls this off well because her appearance isn’t quite as soft and feminine looking, she has that edge, so it’s a good contrast.  So nice and different.  Not cookie cutter sleek (although the shape of the dress is simple, so that helps with all the frippery), but also not weird like a costume.  I do love retro twee though, so that is my personal preference.

  • mjude

  • RoxieRider

In. I can’t in good conscience give this anything else, despite the fairly large quibbles I have. She looks spectacular.

  • I love it. Very grown-up, modern Heidi.

  • CassieLee22

kind of hate the dress on the model, but I think she’s making it work IN

  • total in, i think she looks so lovely and gorgeous

  • In, she is the fairy queen.

  • another_laura

I like it on her.  Styling and makeup are good.  I deplore the shoes but given the hair ornament I am letting that go.

    In.  Mildly.

  • Jessi03

Out!  But I do like the wreath in her hair.

  • Rachelle Neame

  • Out. Oddly I think I might think the wreath was cute with another outfit.

  • AlinaValero

out. she looks like she should be coming out of a cuckoo clock.

  • In! So pretty!

  • NCDFan

In. The dress isn’t perfect but it is interesting. The shoes don’t pull focus. The hair is soft and feminine.

  • In! Beautiful. I think that headband is so lovely and chic.

  • Oh no. OUT. She looks like a Regretsy post.

  • Louise Bryan

Oh, IN!  You guys are becoming cynical.  This is very romantic and very pretty.

  • mrssage

    i love this.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OMG IN.  That red thing in her hair really looks pretty.   She looks romantic.  I love her make up.  What an unusual and interesting dress!  IN IN IN !!

  • kikisayshi

OUT. She looks like Lady Marian waiting for Robin Hood.

  • I think she’s pulling it off! IN!

  • EEKstl

OUT.  If the dress were tea-length and her hair were polished and sharp I might be singing a different tune.

  • I think it’s an IN, in a sort of pre-Rapahelite painting sort of way.

Shocked that T-Lo didn’t have fits over the shoes — the look like Grandma Florsheims!

  • Susan Crawford

IN. I just love this dress: the color AND the embellishments. And the wreath in her hair. Nice werq, Miss Keira!

  • Michaela Tuckova

IN. I take issue with the dirty dishwater colour, but otherwise, she’s mad pretty and working pretty much her signature look. Also, I believe that she was made to wear hippy dippy crap in her hair – making smack-ass-headed girls cry since 2002.

  • melanie0866

IN!  Love it.  Very Downton Abbey.

  • I want to love it but … no. OUT

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

IN – she IS a fashion fairy.  Love her.  Love the darker hair.  Love the makeup.  Not crazy about the shoes, but whatta ya gonna do?

  • Kirsten Henry

    so cute! great look

  • phrenk

I think she looks utterly lovely… but I can’t forgive those shoes.  OUT.

  • rissa42210

She looks really nice.  In.  Looks like bad shoes though.

  • greyhoundgirl

IN.  Except for the Xmas decoration in her hair I think she looks great.

  • TieDye64

I’m giving this an IN, though I’m not in love with the lower half. Love the hair. On her.

  • Hilary Sain

    IN!!!! She looks so stunning

  • In! Love the hair.

  • Lisa Dugan

In.  I had to stare at it a lot but I actually like it.  And the red hair wreath actually improves the look.

  • amian3

Out. The dress and make up are fantastic. The hair and shoes are all wrong.

  • lilibetp

I don’t like that shade of tan/beige/taupe/greige/whateverthehell on her.  Or maybe she’s just exhausted.  How old is she now?  Older than 12, you say?  Smacked ass, then.  And twee as that word you said.

  • Dot

Love the dress, hate the shoes.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Love it. IN for me all the way.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT. I really want to like this. I love the color palette and I love the romance. I even love the little wreath, which calls back to the flowers on the dress without copying them. I love traditional embellishment, and I normally appreciate the femininity of Valentino. But this dress looks like the designer sat down and tried to figure out all the ways to make it the most unflattering thing possible. First let’s put the colorful flowers on her hips, and then let’s cut the bodice in so it really emphasizes her flat chest. At least she improved on the model by avoiding that stumpefying ankle-length hem.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i think yr right about making the bad dress look better–only here it’s not quite a bad dress, just an almost. you hit the froufroufabulous nails on just about every head; however, the dress does look significantly better on the actress than on the model. so much better, in fact, that it offsets that she has those weird little berries that grow in hedges around los angeles & are supposed to be poisonous but dont look poisonous tied to a string around her head.

    edited to add:
does need a different shoe, though. probably a very high end version of those chinese slippers that everyone from, i guess, the late-60s through the mid-80s & maybe before & after

  • librarygrrl64

While I agree with you that the silver is a stitch too far, otherwise this looks beautiful, head to toe. Brava. IN.

  • Qitkat

IN. Sometimes a gal wants to look like a garden party.
It’s very sweet without being twee.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I was not quite feeling this until I saw the rear view. IN. She looks lovely, and less tightly-wound in an appealing way. She’s still Keira, but a softer springtime version.

  • I *want* to love it, but I can’t. She’s one of those ladystars who I usually (and sometimes irrationally) love, but this one doesn’t work for me. The length is weird. I’m not sure about the hair embellishment. And I HATE the shoes.

Maybe it’s in, but with reservations?

  • IN. It’s not really my thing and the dress is far from perfect but the look is working if from nothing else than the sheer will of The Keira.

  • turtleemily

I’m going to say IN because it still looks better on her than it does on the model. And her rocking the thicker brow makes me feel like I really don’t have to get mine done this week.

  • There’s every reason in the world for me to hate this, but heaven help me I think she looks fantastic.  I often think she looks distressingly frail, but this silhouette is perfect for her.  The only thing I really can’t stand are the shoes, but everything else is so challenging and she’s making it look so effortless –

And I’m not a Keira fan, so there you go.

    • TheOtherChristina

This is pretty much exactly how I feel.

  • NurseEllen

This is a little too “Heidi of the Alps” for me.  OUT.

  • in!

  • Hermione_Granger

Love the dress, hate the hair. I’d like a sleek ponytail with it.

  • Yuck, it’s a craftastrophe.  Even on the original runway model.  Sorry but the dun tan background color is not working for me either, and you’re right that the sheer fabric combined with the heavy cross-stitched embellishment just looks tortured.  The “messy” hair doesn’t work either.

    I’m giving it an out.

  • lesmaha

    In! Fashion Fairy she is!

  • Sloppy frippery. Ugly shoes. …But still…kind of enchanting.

  • AudreysMom

I want to like it but it’s just a bit to Etsy. Out.

  • Beth G

Out.  I’m sorry, but a dress whose base color is the color of every single knee-high nylon in my grandma’s drawer is NEVER EVER EVER going to get an in from me.  Especially when the top looks like it was made FROM said knee-highs.

  • A_Rimbaud

Out. She ALMOST makes it work being Keira, but there is just too much on the dress. I kind of hate how loud the “red” is compared to everything else on it, and the matching hair wreath made me cringe at first glance.

    She’s beautiful as always though.

  • sunandmoon24

She looks like a Waterhouse painting… or something 🙂

  • I love this dress.   A bit much embellishment, yes, but that’s not her fault.  In fact, she looks very chic and bohemian in it.

  • Celandine1

I like the dress very much from behind. I hate the front of that bodice. I like the soft romantic hair, but I wore that wreath at ren fairs in the 90’s and she is not making it work for the red carpet. Those grandmother shoes made me weep, she should have gone with the model’s shoes.

And WTF she must have been punched in the eyes by the same baby that assaulted Emma Stone the other day. My eyes look like that this week because of allergies, the burning and the rubbing; why would someone do that on purpose????

Usually she looks so good but this is an OUT.

  • littlemac8

IN – I would love to be able to inspect this dress in person.

  • IN, there is NO such thing as too much embellishment, dears!

  • Monabel

    Interesting and elegant. In.

  • enchanted216

I LOVE this dress and think she looks gorgeous!  Not crazy about the hair.  I think the red berries/flowers(?) are a little much.

  • In — love her!

  • in in in

  • Neverbuynewclothes

Lovely.  So great to see something different — not shiny, short, or gratuitously revealing, but unusual, self-confident and elaborate without being fussy.  This is couture in a way a draped length of sequined jersey can never be.

  • IN!

  • DebbieLovesShoes

    IN!  Love it.

Nobody else could pull this off, but her.  It’s adorable.

  • IN. girl is rocking that fancy-fairytale-floral type thing. and the wreath in her hair actually kinda completes the look. she’s pulling it off!

  •  Maybe Florence Welch could pull this off without looking twee. The dress looks better on the model, and for the first time, the actress, not the model, is too thin for it. OUT.

  • aristida_girl

Even though I don’t really like the dress, I must say IN, she is pulling it off much better than should be possible…

  • elzatelzabelz

OUT- surprised Zooey didn’t wear this first.

  • granddelusion

  • Ksagun13

OUT.  Too fussy, too many colors.  But Keira’s looking less like a lollipop, so that’s a good thing.  Maybe she finally ate something?

  • Judy_S

In. I actually loathe that dress, but. She makes it look like it’s all supposed to be that way.

  • altalinda

    Not stunning, but in.

  • In!  I like the hair, but hate the shoes!

  • lrhoff

LOVE this….she’s in all the way!!!!!!

  • Alexis Keller

In she looks gorgeous, that’s what I would wear on the red carpet

  • momogus

    She looks so PRETTY! IN!

  • I vote IN, even though she bugs. Look, she’s beautiful, and wears clothes very, very well, and generally seems like an intelligent, grounded, lovely person. But oh my god can she not act to save her life. And now she’s been cast in Anna Karenina? No. No. You cannot besmirch my favorite book with your jaw-acting, Keira. Please no.

She does look great though, really.

  • golspie

The only reason she doesn’t pull off the dress is the wispy bird’s nest hairdo. But on the whole,

  • LambeeBaby

The back is great, the front is not doing it, and what is up with the UGLY shoes? Out

  • In.  I kind of love that dress.

  • lucasuk82

In.  I look at the dress, how comfortable she is wearing it, the makeup, the hair, and the accessories. I love the dress and the makeup is gorge, and really like the red hair wreath.  I kind of wish she’s worn it with something else, though. This dress didn’t need any more kooky.  HATE the hair, but her breezy confidence pushes it to in.

  • MissMariRose

I don’t know why it works but it does. IN.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  Stupid bitchface does not go with the Heidi look.

  • mila_8

I’d say in. I like the asymmetry of the embroidery on the bodice. The symmetry below the waist doesn’t have the same ease.

  • In! She should look like she’s in a Renaissance Faire but somehow she pulls it off.

  • jessicasac

In. Somehow it works. Just barely.

  • rafraf25

I like the dress, but I don’t like that shade of pantyhose on Out for me

  • IN! I love it! Brava, darling.

  • Mexxoo

Russian Matroyshka Doll Tablecloth dress!  OUT OUT OUT OUT!
(Plus I want to put it on her backwards, since it feels like the front is a back and the back is a front (minus the zipper of course…maybe…) (possibly with a frilly, short-sleeved blouse…) UGH!

  • Judih1

Dress is IN, but shoes and hair – especially wreath in the hair are OUT – so she is a in/out

  • hyekyoclara

i don’t like the dress style nor the color
    i kinda hate nude color
    but i think
that’s keira and she get it right
    so i am in

  • This shit has so  many IN! that it turned into a WERQ. What about  democracy TLO? down with the dictatorship and long live the bitter kitten spring !

  • Honestly? Not a fan. The hair looks messy and the color weirds me out. Also, shoes bleh.

  • jcolli69

IN. I really like the dress…don’t necessarily like the Christmas wreath in her hair but I think she’s pulling it off.

  • IN. I like how she looks and I love her hair and I’m even loving the idea of the wreath if not that actual wreath.

  • demidaemon

OUT. I’m sorry, but this looks like a bad macrame project.

  • DCSheehan

    In to the in! J’adoreable!

  • In but only because I love the whimsical nature of this look. I don’t like the individual elements as much.

  • LindseyBeans

In!  She’s actually wearing something unusual in a beautiful and elegant way! It’s not twee, it’s gorgeous!

  • Rrroza

IN! It’s gorgeous. I would only like to see it taper in just a bit at the bottom, the way it appears to in the model pic (yes, I know the model is walking) Love the red wreath too.

  • Vic

She looks romantic and soft. Her hair is a little sloppy, but that seems to be in these days. I like this on her. Anyone else would look foolish.

  • I LOVE it! This style suits her so well.

  • ccm800

OUT lederhosen meets grandma’s doily table runner

  • I like the dress very much.  I’m just not sure that’s her color.

  • In! Although my initial reaction to the shoe was “boring”, on second thought there is so much going on with that dress that a muted shoe actually makes sense with this outfit. I love this whole look.

  • mmc

In!  My quibbles are very minor.

  • SEK

In. Fashion Fairy, a rare sight.

    • It suits her. She’s not boring.

  • Out! Because: beige.

  • Sabrina Stern

In for sure, she just looks so quintessentially  herself

  • IN!

  • Judy_J

    late to the party….IN.

  • piecesofconfetti

    IN! It’s perfectly her.

  • Valerie Jones

If I had known the little nun was going to make this from the curtains I would have brought my harmonica.

  • CatherineRhodes

IN. Actually, big in. I really love it.

  • Arellys Victor Garro

    extremely In

  • oohsparkley!

In! Fashion fairy all the way.

  • Cat_In_A_Hat

The wreath is tipping the whole look into A Mid Summer Night’s Dream territory… And yet, I’m ok with that. IN!

  • Caaro3

Ooh, I love it on her.  IN.  Yes, IN.

  • berkeleygirl

Love it, but she’s one of the few who could pull it off.  Looks like something Cate Blanchett would wear…

  • SatelliteAlice

In.  I love her.  I think it looks kind of romantic and sweet.  Sure it isn’t the best she has ever looked but I think it works.  In.

  • shawnhunter

    IN! i love this

  • adnama79

She’s making it work.  Tepid in.

  • DominoEstella

    LOVE IT!!!!

  • BookJunkie315

Can I vote her a cheeseburger??

  • …in, but the hair berries have to go.

  • Allison Shannon

In! Keira wears these types of dresses better than anyone because her face – the face of a fairy, as you said – sells it. Her wispy hair paired with the hard-metal headband really works. The whole look is breathtaking because it stands out, and NOT in a Gaga way. DEFINITELY IN.
