In or Out: Elizabeth Banks in Elie Saab

Posted on June 04, 2012

Sometimes, a gal can just come off like she’s trying way too hard. Consider:

Elizabeth Banks attends the 2012 MTV Movie Awards in an Elie Saab jumpsuit paired with Ruthie Davis shoes and a Lulu Guinness clutch.

Elie Saab Fall 2012 Collection

Lulu Guinness ‘Lips’ Clutch

Ruthie Davis Pump

We don’t know about this one, kittens. We like when Lizzie shoots for edgy because she’s turned out to be surprisingly good at pulling it off. But the combination of the topknot, the sci-fi jumpsuit, the lip clutch and the industrial heel, while admirably cohesive and committed to a theme, is all too much for one outfit. As Diana Vreeland famously said, “Elegance is restraint.” Sure, this is MTV and elegance was off the table because she clearly wanted to go for something a little out-there, but this is borderline costume-y.  A look is only as good as the main garment, and try as we might to be open-minded about it, we just can’t with that jumpsuit.

Vote Now!

IN! Domo arigato, Missy Roboto!

OUT! Lay off the Starbucks and Red Bull when you’re putting a look together, dear.

The consensus on Noomi Rapace’s attempt to be as conventional as possible was IN, but just barely.

  • S-o-o-o, is that an urn with someone’s ashes?

    •  You might be joking, but if not, it’s an MTV Movie award. Looks like a bucket of popcorn.

  • I’m surprising myself by giving this an IN. For a bunch of shit ingredients, she’s really pulled it together.

    • I like it in an 80’s powerbitch sort of way, even though I’d probably hate it on someone else.

      • Agreed. I mean I hate *it* (esp the weird Mary Quant flower motifs in the lace that don’t belong AT ALL) but somehow she looks amazing.

  • There is an eighties vibe to this that I like. And as you mention, edgy seems to be fitting her quite nicely. Difficutl, yes, but and IN

  • I thought it was fierce and fun!

  • Swear to god, I thought this was Kendra Wilkinson.

Which you know says something about Elizabeth’s youthfulness. But on the other hand…

    • Le_Sigh

       OMG I did too!

Out.  Though I would have maybe given it an in if it had been January Jones.

    • girliecue

You nailed it! That’s why I kept thinking, “Costume-y? Looks more stripper-y…”

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I dunno, she looks cool and fun while still looking like an adult (who is content with being an adult). The hair is almost too much for me, but since it’s the MTV Movie Awards she gets an IN!

  • merciblahblah

I have a massive girl crush on her right now, and she has been pretty perfect lately, but this? I can’t get on board with. Also – I never thought this until these photos – she looks like a blond Parker Posey. Huh – who knew?

  • charlotte

This outfit just doesn’t go together with a popcorn award.

  • I’m saying IN, BUT, I really wish the lace panel down the legs wasn’t there.

    • Julie Fountain

I agree.  IN for me too.  That lace strip down the leg is what pushes it into “too far” territory.  But still an IN because overall she looks fierce.

    • ballerinawithagun

I had only seen photos where the pants looked solid & I loved it! Now that you’ve pointed out the lace panel, I don’t like it nearly as much. But…over all an IN.

  • fireontiger

It’s just not working for me. The combination of that hair and the sheer side panels on that jumpsuit – I feel like there is someone else that could rock this, but it’s just not Elizabeth Banks.

  • IN — I’m generally anti-jumpsuit, but I think this works on her. Or I should have had less caffeine today… If it were on someone with a fiercer persona, like Gwen Stefani, would you like it more?

  • petalfrog

I like it for some bizarre reason. Perhaps because the hair and makeup look good. In

  • Out. The back seam is crawling up her butt and it looks like it’s maybe an inch too short in the torso. From the front, when she’s standing still, it’s ok, but once she starts moving, it’s blech.

  • I love it! I could have done without the clutch, but I’m loving the look! (And I usually have an irrational hatred of everything that Elizabeth Banks does/wears.)

  • Out. I just outright hate this.

  • crossed over into costume land- out

  • Ezmartin

  • giiiirrrr

Works for this event, not even bad on a regular RC.  IN.

  • I pretty much love this. I think it’s more than borderline costumey and I don’t disagree with anything else said about it…but I gotta give her the IN for going there.

  • LongTall_Sally

OUT.  The topknot in particular isn’t working for me, though in general I think this just isn’t her jumpsuit.

  • VioletFem

OUT. I like the shoes and the clutch, but the jumpsuit just doesn’t work for me. Plus, that high bun combined with that outfit makes her look pinhead-y.

    • TieDye64

I’m with you on this one.

  • judith traherne

oh IN. Would’ve liked it better with the lacy material going lower in the back; high waisted rear ends are always problematic but from the front it looks very sharp.

  • BeeBeauNYC

IN – for the MTV movie awards, this totally works.

  • IN! She’s a serious – and funny – actress who got invited to the MTV Movie Awards. She played it exactly right; edgy but not skanky. She looks fierce.

  • I like it, so I’m giving it an IN.  It’s totally chic.  I agree on the shoes, however. Those were just a bridge too far.

  • MsKitty

She looks like a female version of Deiter from SNL (“Do you want to pet my monkey?”).  OUT.

  • CassieLee22

I wish the lace didn’t continue down the pants, but she’s still rocking it…IN

  • elleg929

IN – even though I could do without the lace going down the pants.

  • Joey Melliza

in – but would’ve been a werq if she had better make up!

  • AlinaValero

IN i think she’s pulling it off and looking great. not everyone can wear that jumpsuit without getting a “sweetie, no” so the fact that she’s already avoided that is a strong push in her favor.

…must have been a giant pain in the butt to go to the bathroom though.

  • I want to like it, but I can’t find anything to like about it. OUT.

  • in.  it is abit much, but she is pulling it off.

  • lrhoff

    Out, way, way out.

  • I like it from the front, but it’s really unflattering to her back.

  • NatalieD28

IN! I’m loving it for some reason…and I want those heels!!

  • Lina_bee

IN! This is totally apt for her character in the film she’s there to represent.  It would be ridic at any other time, but it fits in present context.

  • Out.

  • Out, the back view is not good

  • I blogged about this look too – I felt it was a little too weird, but risky and ultimately IN. She’s the only woman over 30 on this red carpet who didn’t wear something boring and/or meant for a 19-year-old.

  • VicksieDo

IN from me, it’s striking and different, but not trashy like so many other attendees.

  • lesmaha

    out. Looks kinda tacky–

  • TaurusKW

As some other people have said, the only thing I’d ditch here is the clutch.  Otherwise, I think she looks fierce.  IN

  • KittenBritches

Out.  The lace panel down the legs kicks it into trashy.

  • crash1212

IN. I think she nailed it. Given the venue…and the craptastic other stuff we’ve seen, THIS is well thought out, well put together and she looks fierce as hell.

  • golspie

I think she kind of makes it work. If only her hair weren’t scraped back so tightly. In the UK, we call this a Council Estate Facelift.

    IN, by golly!

  • AlexisPayne

    Kind of love, In.

  • tylka5

I think she looks fierce.  It’s the MTV Awards, most people look like hell.

  • IN. I think she’s really pulling it off. And I love those shoes.

  • fungstyle

I think she looks fantastic, if for no other reason than the look on her face is “yeah that’s right, i DO look great in this crazy ass outift”

  • MilaXX

I’ve been back and forth with this since I saw it last night.  I can’t say it’s too young because I have a feeling Gwen Stefani could rock this. It just doesn’t feel like she should be wearing it. I know that’s weird but there ya  go.

  • trisker

  • I actually like it, IN

  • Imasewsure

OUT… hate to say it, but that is Gwyneth Paltrow’s outfit, not yours, Lizzie

  • Haley Buchanan

IN.  I actually love it!  The sheer bits have a really interesting shape without being vulgar and the shape is actually kinda flattering on her for a sci-fi dress.  Not necessarily an appropriate look for every venue, but certainly the weirdness is fine for MTV.  Surprisingly cute and a lot of fun.

  • SpcilK

I like it she looks good – IN!

  • IN–she looks fierce as shit.

  • AngelaGreen

I think she looks gorgeous, I say in.

  • granddelusion

    I’m sorry, that’s Chelsea Handler.

  • argonauticos

I vote in! But that hair is a bit harsh.

  • IN but hate the hair

  • I kinda sorta love it. In.

  • PaulaBerman

She looks like one of Captain Kirk’s conquests. OUT.

  • She got carried “out” by Joe Manganiello dressed as a fireman. For that alone I give her an “in”. Wonder if she knew she was going to be picked up and therefore chose a pantsuit? (oh, and based on the outfit, I give it a borderline in, though I’m really not digging the hair.)

    • SRQkitten

I’d second that in despite my unabridged envy!

  • Because it’s MTV it’s an IN for me. Very bad ass Bond-girl who may or may not be the enemy. Maybe a sleek pony tail would have been better than the bun, but, shoot, look at her. Those heels have got to turn into something dangerous and interesting. Pogo sticks, at least.

  • leave_Blake_alone

The jumpsuit and heels are pretty great, but the hair and lips are too much with it. Out, but just barely.

  • mjude

    OUT, not very flattering

  • DominoEstella

IN.  I think it worked for the event.

  • CrazyAuntie

    IN – love it!

  • Jessi03

No no no no no.  Out.

  • j_anson

It’s the MTV Music Awards. Costume-y is okay. IN.

  • IN.  On someone tacky this would look tacky, but on her it’s a “wow, I wish my butt would look like that in that outfit.”  OUT on the lips clutch, though.  Looks like something they’d sell at Spencer Gifts.

  • IN, IN, IN! i love it, she’s having fun.

  • i appreciate what she’s trying to do; i’ll give her an IN, even though she should have edited a bit.

  • I’m saying IN.  Girl’s having an unstoppable year and she knows it, which gives her the confidence to elevate above us mere mortals and pull this off.

  • I like it, but it’s making her ass look too big. Considering that this is Elizabeth Banks, and the colour is black… I’ll go with OUT

  • Wendi126

I’m giving it an IN mostly because it’s so much better than the two MTV award posts of cringe worthy shit that came before. That said, I hate the hair. Dig the peg leg shoes

  • kimmeister

In for this particular event/venue.  I adore the shoes.

  • Judy_J

I can’t like that jumpsuit.  OUT.

  • OUT. It’s just all too much. One or two edgy elements, great, but it’s all just too much. *eyetwitch*

  • Char Crop

O-U-T! …but love the clutch and the pumps!

  • prettybigkitty

    Out.  Too much.

  • kmc1138

In.  In in in in in.  It’s Mtv – and if you can’t work some kitsch at a fake awards show, then I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.  I love it.  Plus it makes her rump look fantastic.

  • D

I was about to go with “in” until I took a close look at the side peep show lacey whatever that is. That is never not tacky. Thus, Ms. Banks is OUT.

  • Candice Richardson

    IN! Love the jumpsuit.

  • Hot outfit, hot shoes, suck hair.

  • Jessica O’Connell

She was up for best on-screen transformation so I actually think it kind of fits. I like it. IN.

  • ringthing

I’m ok with this. Would have been better with looser hair, I think. IN

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  That topknot gives my forehead sympathetic pain and the stripe down the pants is a bridge too far.

  • Really like this, IN!

  • cleep1000

Other than showing off her remarkably trim waist, I don’t think the jumpsuit is all that flattering on her. The rear calls for someone with, well, a rear. The top knot is most regrettable.

  • amf0001

I don’t mind the suit or the lace panals but I hate the hair,  I think it’s aging and weird.  If she had loose hair I think the whole outfit would work better

  • AWS

LOVE IT!  Dangerous shoes!  She looks soooo comfortable and HOT.

  • IN. It’s MTV, so leniency is necessary.

  • IH

Well i love it, the clutch can go jump off a cliff though.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

if it’s not you do not wear it.

  • jw_ny

IN, but I hate her hair.

  • OUT. The fit from the back is very unfortunate.

  • OUT. The fit from the back is very unfortunate.

  • She might have pulled it off without the pants. The pants push it over the edge. OUT.

  • Ew.

  •  Strangely, IN-but she could’ve gone a different way w/ the hair..

  • TSkot

Had her hair been casual, it could work; as it is: OUT

  • IN..except the hair. It should be a ponytail.

  • leftcoastpickle

    out, hate the whole thing.

  • altalinda

  • IN! she looks fierce.

  • Would have been in for me if it didn’t have the lace on the pants too.  Going with OUT today.

  • TAGinMO

Hmmm…I think I may have to agree that she’s trying too hard. But the thing is, she’s almost entirely succeeding. She looks pretty great here.

At the Oscars, and really at a lot of other venues, this would be an out. But at the MTV Movie Awards, when pulled off so well, it’s unquestionably IN.

  • Definitely an IN from me.  She looks edgy enough, but still red carpet for MTVA.  I don’t think it’s too much.  It’s just enough.

  • unbornfawn

    OUT for lack of restraint.

  • DaveUWSNYC

    Barely, just barely, IN.

  • Louise Bryan

This is so tough and edgy, I feel like someone’s head may roll.  Just a touch of softening somewhere would be nice.  I give her an IN, but just barely, especially with that hair.

  • Aurumgirl

If you just let down the topknot, it might actually work.  In an **stolen phrase coming!** 80’s powerbitch sort of way.

    • raeb23

Yeah, i think a sleek ponytail might have worked better. It’s a bit much, but her confidence pushes it to IN for me anyway.

  • StrandedFashionista

I kind of like it. I’ll give her an IN for being conceptual.

  • Allison Woods

  • EEKstl

OUT.  If this were a dress, IN.

  • IN! I think it’s pitch-perfect for the MTV awards. I kind of love it.

  • amian3

IN. She looks great–the only goof is the hair but it is okay enough to rate an in. At least her hair is doing something not just hanging there.

  • PrunellaV

Yikes. That first shot had me thinking this was a somewhat cleaned-up Jenna Jameson. OUT.

  • ThaliaMenninger

OUT. Only Emma Peel could pull that off. Because if you tried to tell her she didn’t, she would put her spike heel down your throat. That’s how Emma Peel plays a catsuit. This pretender… Not so much.

I want that lip clutch, by the way. But I would just leave it at home and admire it, not take it out on the red carpet while wearing a catsuit and a top-knot.

  • nycfan

In. Right for the event and in that context she loks great … Maybe had i not seen the other outfits on the red caret for this event, i would feel differently.

  • Anathema_Device

Hmmm…she’s kind of overpowered by the outfit. She looks washed out to me. But I do like it on her.

I’ll vote In, even though I’m not totally in love with this one her. I’d love to see it on Rooney Mara.

  • BazoDee

Out -those strips on the side of the top look like ‘censored’ bars. I just can’t

  • Sophie Collier

Jumpsuits are not intended for women with any kind of hips.  Send this to Kristen Stewart and there ya go.  The hair is completely wrong for this, though.  Does she need a necklace?  I think maybe a piece that sits right over the collar edge would work.

  • CMCH

    Ugh. That is, OUT.

  • IN for me; in fact, it strikes me as the perfect outfit to go with a bucket of gold-plated popcorn! [By which I mean “campy/theatrical”, which I happen to like.]

  • NurseEllen

Those shoes are amazing.  That award is tackiness itself.

I say IN, despite the bad hair.  She would have done herself proud with a softer look, or maybe a 1960’s flip.

  • OUT.

  • phrenk

I think it’d suit a different event much better (though I am not sure what that event might be), but I think she looks great.  IN.

  • jilly_d

could have done without the flowers in the sheer panels, but my girl looks fierce as shit here.  IN.

  • IN – love it except the hair.

  • Love it. IN.

  • Noshmek

Look, Elizabeth Banks is the very model of a poster child for actors I never seem to be able to recognize, nor do I give a shit.  However, this look actually made me consider, however briefly, adding her to my list of people I should probably acknowledge exist.  So, IN, or whatever.

  • When I saw the cropped photo, I thought, “What a great dress!” The design just doesn’t translate well into a jumpsuit.

  • CQAussie

Oh for fuck’s sake, OUT.  It’s hideous.  I can’t even believe she thought this was OK.

  • As much as I don’t like this, she looks good in it–IN.

  • Alexis Keller

IN she actually looks classy and put together with just a hint of cray

  • NCDFan

In. Good choice considering she had  Joe Manganiello carrying her off stage during the awards. That’s a hot picture too. 🙂

  • Patricia Hoffman

Love the shoes and actually not hating on the jumpsuit in the full front shots, but side shots…not so good. And the hair is a step too far. How about a sleek pony?

  • in i like it.  frankly anything goes for the mtv ___ awards.

  • quiltrx

Out.  When I thought this was a top and pants, and ONLY the top had the open insets, I liked it.  TOO much with it being a jumpsuit and going all down the leg.

And I HATE her hair, it gives me a headache thinking about it.  And the shoes look too rickety.

  • aristida_girl

Out, because a jumpsuit with a peplum/no underwear/illusion netting with black plastic spaghetti/lip clutch/cute but too interesting pumps (for this look)/tight-face hair/…I have lost the will to go on, but you all get the idea..I do like her in black though and would like to see more of edgy Lizzy

  • MzzPants

Mmm….yeah….she can do edgy, but not like Kristen Stewart.  Better set it free, Liz.  Out-ish.

  • demidaemon

IN. I actually really like this, especially from the front. Not so much from the sides or the back, but the front shot counts more, in my opinion. Domo arigato, Missy Roboto!

  • Going with IN here. It’s MTV.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN!  With softer hair it would have been close to a werq.

  • Anything with cameltoe is out. Sorry Lizzie!

  • guest2visits

It’s a jumpsuit, which I hate. And it’s got the peek-a-boo cut outs running down the sides, which I also hate.
But she looked great for the event.   I guess if you’re not going to do the Lopez (micro short); then you’ve got to find something
    else that’s stage-worthy.

  • Alisa Rivera

I should hate this but she pulls it off. IN.

  • Call me Bee

This would be kinda fierce if the lacing didn’t go all the way donw the side and leg.  That takes it from cool and edgy to plain ol’ tacky.  OUT.

  • Dagney

    in. IN. duh.  fierce.

  • OUT. Hate this look.

  • Thathoodwink

She seems a little bit too old for an outfit like this.

  • understateddiva

    Out.  That shit cray.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I think she’s IN.  Those shoes are killer.  Only thing I dislike is the hair.  Everything else looks fierce.

  • ccm800

OUT and then some. Ugly – She looks like the biggest slut at the Bingo parlor.

    • formerlyAnon

  • sleepycat

    I like that IN!

  • i say in, relatively speaking.  that is, compared to the rest of the butt ugly looks on that carpet, she looks pretty good.  love the shoes.

  • ChristySchiff

OUT. When I first saw this, I didn’t realize it was a jumpsuit (or that it had those cut-out-y panels going down the legs), and I really liked it then.  But now, I’m not loving it.  What is the term for when you love something right away but then start to hate it the longer you look at it?  Flash mob?  I don’t know, but it’s that.

  • I just can’t with that hair.

  • TieDye64

Oh, honey. No. None of it works. So very OUT.

  • IN for INterest. I’m not sold on the sheer side on the pants or those shoes though.

  • jjfg

I dunno.  It just doesn’t seem to FIT her right – or something.  Maybe it’s a size too small?  Or the hem needs to be let out?  (Never mind that my first impression is that she’s side stage at a Gorgeous Ladies of Wresting event.)  The top part looks promising but the bottom kills it.  OUT.

  • FayeKat

To me, she looks like she is owning the look. It’s plenty edgy, but it’s MTV, it’s not worth going if you are not having fun with your clothes. I’ll go as far as to say she was one of the few who really got it right that night.
    IN all the way!!

  • fursa_saida

I dunno. I agree with your overall point, but I like the idea of this jumpsuit and I don’t think many could pull it off simply in terms of looking physically good in it. Therefore, I’m glad she’s wearing it. Maybe a more normal clutch and different hair would have saved the look?

  • Judy_S

IN. No one of those elements is “robotic” nor is her smile. It’s definitely costumey all together but in a personal way. Given the dull/awful looks for this event you’ve shown otherwise, her put-together craziness is very appealing.

  • formerlyAnon

In, solely because it’s MTV. Costumed as stripper-let-loose-in-designer-warehouse seems to be acceptable at their awards, why not sci-fi movie glamazon?

  • I really like it. I think if you are gonna do a jumpsuit, it should look like this, instead of the horrible dropped crotch, insanely wide legged travesties that come down the pike every couple of seasons. Got folks out here looking like Gumby. And she didn’t over accessorize, so nothing really competes with the lace.

  • saanrio

While, yes, this is an MTV event, and as such, crazy is kind of half-way expected out of some… this either went too far or not far enough, and I’m just not sure which.

Either way, it is an OUT.

  • kingderella

‘im wearing no panties!’-jumpsuits are neva eva gonna be in. the hair doesnt help. OUT.

and the designer of the award trophy should be shot. (maybe he was, and thats his ashes shes carrying around?)

  • Lexie

In from the front, but the back of that jumpsuit is not doing her ass any favors.

  • MarissaLG

IN IN IN IN IN. I’m all about this! I think she looks fly and the look is perfect for the MTV Awards.

  • A tentative OUT. She looks fine from the front. But those pants do not flatter her behind.

  • PeggyOC

    Out.  Out.  Out.

  • Cathy S

I don’t know. I kind of like the jumpsuit, except for the open sides and the way the back looks, I hate the clutch, and I hate the shoes, but somehow she seems to be pulling it all off. I’ll give her an In, but I’ll probably hate myself for it tomorrow.

  • Kacper Nedza

I think she looks glorious and also like she might kill me in my sleep. IN.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

If I’m not way too late – IN!

  • I’m inching towards an IN, but it’s a close one. I hate her hair, but the suit fits her well. But it looks a little desperate. But oh what the hell! IN.

  • I can support everything but that god-awful hair.  So considering the event I would say she just barely squeaked in – but she damn near wreaked it with that pinhead hair!

  • Sunshine16

Not digging the hair, but this is IN for me.  She’s obviously feeling that jumpsuit…and rockin it!

  • IN. Maybe a bit too themed, but she’s pulling it of.

  • I could take or leave the jumpsuit: I think the only thing flattering about it is the body-con quality and that peplum (also, Elie Saab, Stella McCartney called: she sounded annoyed). That bun was *not* what this jumpsuit needed, and this definitely could’ve used metallic accents, if not pops of color. Also ticking me off: everything here is mostly black, maybe nude (including the makeup), so why are her nails neon pink? That’s making my eye twinge.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

    Too much. OUT.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

    Too much. OUT.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

IN.  I think her make up is pretty.  She has lovely eyes  And she doesn’t look slutty.

  • judybrowni

The jumpsuit and heels are vintage Frederick’s of Hollywood.

    Not in a good way.

And not from the neck up.

If you’re gonna go Frederick’s, you should go all the way, honey.

  • I dream of Jeannie + Demon Possession. OUT.

  • I know I’m late to the party, but I am loving Ms. Thing in this outfit. No, its not elegant, but it is mothereffing punchy and full of confidence. That top knot kind of bothers me but overall E.Banks inspires me. IN. IN. IN!

  • She loves herself in it, so I think an IN is appropriate!

  • bailey debruynkops

i get what you’re saying tlo but when every item she has on is adorable, i can’t blame her. when else is she gonna wear that clutch? seize the opp’ i say. IN

  • Hottie Roboto! IN!

  • OUT! That jumpsuit needs to be burned (and my mind needs to be wiped).

  • Not feeling it.  From the back it makes her figure look dreadful and the pinhead effect makes it worse.   Maybe if it were a dress?

  • Out. I can’t get past that I think the black patches over her boobs look like censorship bars.

  • in.

  • Samantha Irene

I’m giving her an IN. Better than always a dress!

  • Elizabeth, it was a good try but hand this one over to Jada Pinkett-Smith.

  • oohsparkley!

That jumpsuit is a tough one, but she’s working it as best as it can be done. In.
