In or Out: Ashley Greene in Donna Karan Atelier

Posted on June 07, 2012

Darlings, our minds are a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of ambiguity.* You see, we find ourselves liking this, even though by all rights, we shouldn’t.

Ashley Greene attends the 2012 CMT Music awards in Tennessee in a Donna Karan Atelier dress paired with Nicholas Kirkwood sandals.

It’s the shoes, we think. They’re kinda gasp-worthy – in a good way. They’re some kind of unlikely amalgam of art nouveau and disco-fabulous. We really like the dress too, but we question whether it’s the best choice for her skin tone. But it’s a pretty dress, her hair and makeup look impeccable, and her shoes are knocking us out. Then again, she could use a bra. And maybe an inch less in the feather detail. And a piece of jewelry. We’re confused. Is that an IN or not?

Vote Now!

IN! Looks like an IN to me.

OUT! Too beige; too muppet-y; too under-styled.

Miss Zoe Saldana’s fierceness punched all the Bitter Kittens in the face, to which they responded with a dazed but delighted IN.

Meh. I don’t think she really needed a bra though. That’s how boobs look.

      Killer shoes, though.

      • mshesterp

Agreed, I think she looks natural and…like a woman with great boobs.  It’s not a dress you could put a bra under, I don’t think.  I give her an IN, she almost always makes her clothes work.

        • Mod_girl

Yes, to me this dress is very Disco-esque, and I don’t recall women in disco dresses having boobs pushed up to their cheekbones

          • Maurine W. Sigmund

the way it makes her breasts look, sorry but it’s an

          • Sau-Chih Feng

I think her breasts are naturally beautiful, but in this dress, maybe a little more support than she’s been given would have created a more flattering shape? I don’t want to disagree with you all, because heaven knows I’m not a fan of wearing bras myself, but there are definitely some dresses when a bra can make a big difference.

      • FlamingJune1967

Agreed!  Her boobs are supported… they just aren’t pushed up and in until they resemble 2 flesh colored balloons.

      • Aly Light

YES! I’m kind of fed up with hearing perfectly normal looking breasts declared “saggy” because they aren’t preternaturally defying gravity.

        • ChiliP

Glad I’m not the only one. Every time I see a comment about saggy boobs or bad bras, I stare down at the ladies and thank god I’m not a celebrity.

        • girliecue

          Amen and hallelujah, sister!

      • ecallaw

I totally agree.  When they’re that perky and it’s done in a non-trashy way, I say go for it.

      • JaneDC

She doesn’t have to push them up under her jaw, but a little perking up wouldn’t have hurt those girls Or the look of the dress.

        • raininmai

The breasts are great and the dress couldn’t really accommodate a bra anyway. I think her posture could be better though and it would probably solve everything.

    • Charlotte

I just can’t overlook the way it makes her breasts look, sorry but it’s an OUT.

    • C.

In.  And it’s the dark hair I think, we’ve been seeing these blushes on blondes and lighter shades of brown hair, so there’s not as much contrast.  But with the gold shoes and dark hair bracketing it, the dress doesn’t set off my nude-dress-alert pinging.

      • DinaSews

I agree completely.  The dress almost becomes a non-factor and your eyes are drawn to the face and killer shoes.  In.

    • Uche

Out. It looks odd in the waist and bust, and feathers always make me think of “Dancing With the Stars”.

    • Kiltdntiltd

I can’t go with an IN on this one.  That dress, which is okay, of itself, is just too close to her skin color, leaving her looking like we can see the map of her veins or something. I love her makeup, hair and shoes.  But I can’t quite muster an IN.

      • BazoDee

THIS. Exactly this. OUT for me too.

      • TieDye64

        Agree on all counts. Out.

      • introspective

totally thought the whole thing looked like an undergarment to me. bodysuit spanx with sheared muppet flounce on the hem for good measure. maybe in another color I could like this. but this close to your skintone?? sorry girl. OUT.

      • deliadee

        Me too, out.

    • MissAnnieRN

I agree with all of your assessments.  Hair – IN.  Shoes – IN.  Dress on it’s own – IN.  But it doesn’t photograph well on her – owing to it being too close to her skin color.

In the end, In?  Tenative In?  She doesn’t look bad.  That’s for sure.

      • AmandaCathleen

I second everything you said. This on someone with a darker skin tone would be a robust “IN!!” On Ashley it’s just a regular “…in.”

        • carolynmo

          And I’ll third. It’s an “. . .oh, fine–in.”

    • unbornfawn

The dark hair and great shoes, bring this skin tone dress way up. IN

      • jtabz

Ditto this. Also, I have such hair envy.

    • tallgirl1204

Love the shoes and dress.  Hate the artfully-zig-zagged hair part.  Straighten the part, and she’s an in.

    • Briarnoir

      In as hell.

    • EEKstl

She’d be an IN for me just with that hair, make-up and shoes, but I kinda like the dress too.

    • Pablo Ulloa

that cleavage… and the waist… ..not flattering at all… OUT!  (boring color)

    • MilaXX

small IN. It’s all rather bland on her, but would look great on someone with more pigment.

    • In_Stitches

The dress isn’t helping define her waist and the boobs, well, there’s just too much out.  The color/print on top of that?  It’s a no go.  I think her make up might be a little overdone as well.  Normally she looks stunning, but here, she’s working plastic barbie face.  It might just be that wide-eyed blank stare though(normally she smizes with the best of them).

    • HeatherMcIlrath

i say in! those shoes are stunning, but what also helps are her exceptional good looks. the dress is pretty average, but the way she turned her hair/makeup out and then donned an “owning it” facial expression elevates this look to another level.

      in other words…get it girl!

    • alyce1213

      Shoes: IN very
      Dress: OUT kind of

      Overall, an IN-LITE.

    • Lina_bee

IN, but only because of the shoes. I hate the non-color, but the rest makes up for it.

    • Lisa Dugan

In.  It’s a little awkward in the chest and rib area but I love the feathers and the shoes are great.  She looks beautiful.

    • j_anson

Meh. I don’t hate this (and I do like the shoes) but I think this is one of those dresses that needs to look sleek and impeccable to work, and this doesn’t. Beige is fine as far as it goes, but beige and wrinkly is not so fine. Out, I guess. But not in all caps.

    • Sarah Caponigro

I feel like her boobs like fine. They are boobs.

    • Julie Chase

I don’t actually like the dress but it looks pretty amazing on her and I love the shoes. In.

    • Julie Chase

I don’t actually like the dress but it looks pretty amazing on her and I love the shoes. In.

    • Laura Toepfer

I think you were merely confused by all the awfulness at the CMT awards red carpet. That is an OUT. Not a “terrible.” But not an in, that’s for sure.

    • Laura Toepfer

I think you were merely confused by all the awfulness at the CMT awards red carpet. That is an OUT. Not a “terrible.” But not an in, that’s for sure.

    • AnaRoW

Her hair is very pretty. The shoes and dress are ugly. OUT.

    • AnaRoW

Her hair is very pretty. The shoes and dress are ugly. OUT.

    • sk8tfan

In. Individually the pieces aren’t so great (except for the awesome shoes) but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Plus, she has pretty feet that show well in the shoes.

    • sk8tfan

In. Individually the pieces aren’t so great (except for the awesome shoes) but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Plus, she has pretty feet that show well in the shoes.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

those shoes are too fabulous for this to be anything but in.

    • Sara__B

Not worthy of an in, by way of being too bland and boring. Not worthy of an out, by way of being not particularly bad. This is hardly worth the effort to decide. OUT, I guess.

      • amywinns

Likewise out. Interesting shoes aren’t enough to make an IN-worthy outfit. but not an all-caps out.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  The dress is the wrong color for her skin tone and the shoes don’t coordinate with the dress correctly.

    • jw_ny

It’s just so blah…which is odd to say since there is all that cleavage as well as the feathery bottom.  She looks pretty, from the neck up, but I hate the askew part in her hair.  She looks like she’s in a pissy mood to boot…

    • amye

Eh…. I don’t like the color on her.  And that’s 1/2 the look, so I’m voting OUT

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    • Jessi03

      In!  I like it.

    • Maya KC

Love the shoes, but the dress kind of looks like her veins are trying to escape. Out.

    • Julie Fountain

I think it works, even with the skin-tone color, so I say IN.  If she were a blonde, I don’t think it would have worked as well tone-wise.

    • Jecca2244

i love it. Aliza Licht from DK PR chartered a G4 JUST to get this dress there on time, IN. Also, those are the shoes I need to go with my dress for an event tonight. Alas, not happening.

    • mjude

      i dont know….OUT?

    • AlinaValero

      IN she looks amazing.

    • LuluBI

Despite the noted shortcomings, the overall look is an IN, and, if we were to grade on a relative scale, give the other drek TLO has shown us on the CMT music awards RC, it would a SUPER-IN

    • bailey debruynkops

the color makes it an              out

    • Jennifer Hofstetter

I don’t like the top of the dress, but I’m going with IN. I think her hair offsets her skin tone if that makes sense, and everything else looks very pretty.

    • lalahartma

      An unenthusiastic in.

    • Deborah Lipp

I can’t even believe we’re having this conversation. That top doesn’t fit right, it’s beige and feathers, and the shoes do nothing for me.

    • PastryGoddess

OMG are you guys sick or drunk or hysterical?  This is such an OUT it’s not even funny.  Please go shopping at Barney’s Stat to get this fug out of your system

    • Melissa Brogan

I agree her hair, makeup, and shoes are great. But I jut can’t with this dress. OUT.

    • Anika

I didn’t like it when I first saw it — the color doesn’t suit her — but the more I look, the more I like. And the shoes are amazing. They tip it to IN.

    • erinbinek

Out. The dress doesn’t fit up top, and she has such a boyish shape that she needs a dress with a defined waist. The color really does wash her out. She’s very pretty- too bad she didn’t wear those killa shoes with a really great dress.

    • up with pod people

In and wow. SHOES TO ME NOW.

    • FlamingJune1967

It’s ok.  Nothing terribly offensive.  In.

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

yes on jewelry and bra, and i would have liked some more gilded eye makeup and maybe a nice fat sock bun. she always has her hair down.

    • Amanda

      LOVE the shoes! IN

    • MzzPants

She’s IN.  The dress and her skin contrast just enough…imagine Taylor Swift in this..blech.  Perfect, bouncy hair.  Nice, natural rack.  Fabulous shoes.  Give her a Donna Summer theme song and she’s good to go.

    • sherrietee

You are welcome to like it.  Not my cuppa.  OUT.

    • Judy_J

The shoes are the best part of this outfit.  Their fabulosity tips the scales to justbarely IN.

    • foodycatAlicia

I don’t like the dress or the shoes but I love how glossy her hair is. I think that means it is an OUT.

    • ChelseaNH

Out.  The dress just isn’t doing it for me, and the shoes can’t carry a look.

    • cleep1000

    • Rebecca

      Those shoes are AMAZING.

…I feel like the dress makes her waist look wide, which it obviously is NOT.

      …Still, an out from me.

    • marilyn

Out.  Too many little things wrong here.

    • Jangle57

Hate the cleavage – and hate the color.  OUT

    • BayTampaBay

    • demidaemon

My first reaction was, “What an ugly dress.” I don’t think anything could save this look after that. OUT.

    • Daniele Paulding

      In. she looks great.

    • Alyson Epstein

Out.  although she is better dressed than most at the CMTs

    • butterflysunita

To me, all is clear as a mountain lake on a peaceful spring day.  She looks beautiful–IN.

    • Britney

OUT. Those killer shoes don’t forgive that dress IMO.

    • Deitra S.

It’s DEFINITELY the shoes!  A begrudging “in.”

    • Liana Brooks

IN – I can’t think of anyone else who could work this dress, but it does the job of saying “All Eyes On ME!”

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Out.  Boobs are too low, shoes are all kinds of ugly (IMHO, anyway…), and the dress is the exact shade of her skin.  Hair and makeup are good.  Why is she slouching so much??

    • CassieLee22

Don’t loveeeee it or really like it, but the shoes are pretty fab IN

    • TSkot

Proportion of the skirt is off.  OUT

    • PeaceBang

Not really working for me, maybe because she looks like a deer in headlights. “Am I a flapper? Am I a disco queen? Does this dress fit me? Why do I have veins all over my dress?” OUT.

    • snarkykitten

out. it looks like she’s wearing a neglige

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Love the Wonder Woman shoes, but the lack of support kills the dress.

    • ThaliaMenninger

A definite NO for me. I don’t like the feathers, the color, or the bodice of the dress, which gives her unpleasant boob-fall-out. And I hate the shoes. They look like something the drag version of Mercury would wear to deliver mail in. Plus her toes are over the edge. UGLE.

    • Anathema_Device

In = Blazing Saddles references. Always and forever.

Out = Flesh-toned, feathered, boob slings.

    • lesmaha

The shoes are fab, but the look overall is not doing it for me.  OUT.

    • PeggyOC

Out.  Saggy, muppety and flesh colored.  Those shoes are fierce, but not for this dress.  Those are shoes for an LBD.

    • Jessika Ralph

      You’re right.  You shouldn’t.

Oh, you wanted me to vote, too?  OK, fine.OUT.

    • formerlyAnon

In. Your quote nails why I think so – the dress creates visual movement that makes even the puffly muppety skirt look somehow almost-sleek, or at least purposefully designed as an integral part of the dress, not a giant piece of trim looking for its marabou slipper.

And I’m sure it’s just me, but I wish the part in her hair didn’t mirror the rivers-wending-their-way-to-the-sea theme. But those zig-zag parts are a pet peeve.

    • VicD

Out.  It does nothing for her.

    • TheOriginalLulu

      Sounds like an OUT, guys.
I think it’s just fine. Nothing amazing, given that the dress is the same color as her skin.
Not in love with the shoes, but I’m impressed that they actually FIT. We’re so used to seeing these people clunking around like 5-year olds in their mothers’ shoes. I’ll give it an in. Not an IN! mind you, but just an in.

    • JD Diggs

She is channeling Teri Hatcher. Automatic out.

    • anotherEloise

Always enjoy a Hedley Lamarr quote.

    • Shawn EH

In! She’s beautiful, especially when she doesn’t overwork it. Bet those feathers feel nice.

    • PaulaBerman

I say a weak IN. If it were darker brown, it would be a solid IN, but I am hating the beige trend and it weakens my love for this look.

    • Merneith

I’m going to be cold and bitter and say OUT. Each piece on its own is good – but together it’s not really doing anything for her.

    • suzq

    • trisker

      IN She looks fabulous

    • oohsparkley!

      Voting in.

    • altalinda

In, though the proportions of the dress seem off to me — like the bottom should flare out just a wee bit.

    • Hetha Innis

I don’t like the bust, but otherwise it’s a pretty dress. The shoes on the other hand rock to a level that makes it almost an IN, but not quite.

    • mrspotts66

i should look so good.  ever.

    • Sophie Collier

It’s not working on her, but it’s not that the dress is bad or that she looks bad.  I think the dress needs a flatter chested wearer and she needs something less peachy.  Agree that the shoes are fabulous!

I’ll give it an unenthusiastic “IN” just because nothing is “bad” per se.

    • marlie

It’s IN from me! The dress is a shade or two lighter than her skin, so it doesn’t completely blend in. Plus, , the dress has that gold-ish detail, which prevents it from being a column of neutral. The feather detail doesn’t bother me, and I’d KILL for those shoes.

    • TigerLaverada

She gets an OUT, but your Hedley Lamarr reference gets a +100.

    • granddelusion

Shoes are overwrought, dress is too tight, and her boobs have no support (and need it). Out.

    • Summer Born

      OUT, dear ones.

    • Pop Tarts Jen

It’s cute, and she gets an IN from me!

And Tom & Lorenzo get IN times infinity from me for the “Blazing Saddles” quote.

    • Eric

Fairly easy IN from me.  There’s some error here, but when the hair/makeup and shoes are that good, it’s impossible to not grade on a curve.

    • jmorino08

Are we doing the zig zag part again? Because I do that on accident all the time. Who knew a 40 yo soccer mom could be such a tren setter?

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

IN. A Muppetty, sort of eh, IN.

    • lizajane1776

In. I think the spaniel hair is working here, giving some definition.
      And a topographical dress! Wonderful!
      And interesting shoes!

    • Eovaai

      IN. For the shoes alone

    • Amy Ellinger

Is she auditioning for the inevitable Kate Middleton-Cambridge bioflick?

Thorough meh, leaning to IN, because of the makeup and stellar shoes.

    • aristida_girl

IN, I think she looks pretty, I do agree about the bra though.

    • LinXGUA

OUT. I don’t like the ‘beige’ fashion. I don’t understand why some ladies would like us to think they’re naked or they have some skin problem. It’s TACKY. It’s vulgar. Please, no more.
The shoes are from She-Ra, princess of power. Of course they’re awesome.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i dont know who she is*, but i think she looks nice.
in this case, too, she could use a bra but it isnt like, you know, an absolute. IOW, i think they would have passed more muster more easily in years when we had not, as a people, become accustomed to the sight of silicone [no idea whether these are those or not but they look realer, anyway, than most]. & yr pinpoint right about the shoes.

*as an aside i looked her up thinking, erroneously it turns out, that here was someone around my age who had been on the scene for quite awhile &, just like so many, i had simply missed seeing her. um, nope. so theres that.

    • kikisayshi

Ugh! It’s all IN except for that nudey naked color. She looks pretty fab.

    • sleepycat

I love the shoes, however, I have to give her an out. The dress just washes her out.

    • Magatha

I like all of it. If she was blonde, maybe the beigey color wouldn’t work. But with her dark hair, and her skin tone, which, although pale, is more olive than pink, I like it. She could probably wear a bra, but look at her chest! There’s nothing sloppy or droopy about her bosom. Her bosom looks pretty and real, and there’s not a chance in hell that she’s fooling us with lifelike half-cantaloupes stapled to her chest. Well, I didn’t start out thinking this, but upon further review, I might could turn gay for her.

    • andreawey

I like it a lot, the top lifts and separates;) in!

    • AWS

Unless she is in a commercial for a paper shredder or is the rape victim from the upcoming SHOWGIRLS 2, she’s as out as out gets.

    • Cat_In_A_Hat

      Disco-flapper-fabulous. IN!

    • lrhoff

Snap out of it, boys.  This is not that great a look.  Long day?

    • Sierra Delta

Pretty face.  Boring everything else.  Yawn.  OUT.

    • GTrain

    • Dagney

The. Shoes. Are. TOOOOOO SMALL!!!! Make it stop mommy!  Make the lady put shoes that fit!!!!

Are these gals so poor they cannot afford shoes that keep their toes from hanging off the edge?

    • ccm800

IN – I kinda love it.

    • jcolli69

I’ll give her an IN, but if she wants perfection she should listen to TLo!!!

    • Patricia Gillett

Hair and makeup are perfect but still OUT. Can’t get past the color of the dress. Are we going to have to do a telethon or something to raise awareness about the wrong-ness of beige dresses? It’s an epidemic! The shoes belong with a dress in a better color and on someone with smaller feet.

    • Lauren Lynch Fox

Stand up straight girl, you are pretty! Too beige but still in.

    • saanrio

OUT.  Maybe not a bra, but some of those little adhesive cups, just to give them a little perk wouldn’t be a bad idea… Also, while the shoes are fab, I can NOT get behind that dress.  The lines are making her look wide to my eye, and too many feathers, also not really liking the shape of the neckline, since it is pulling in the middle, and makes the top look almost too small while the rest of the dress looks almost too big.   Overall, not a fan of this dress on this girl.  Makeup is nice, but the hair could have had a little something done to it.

But the shoes are fab.  Too bad shoes will not save this from an OUT in my books.

    • Grace Ritt

IN, mostly for the shoes. Needs a bra, though.

    • Susan Crawford

The shoes? (Short delay while I sponge off the drool from my keyboard – LOVE THEM!)

The dress is pretty, but I don’t think the color is doing anything for her. I would have loved this in a deeper rose, or a melon-shade. And maybe more support for the breastal area, but she still has a smashing figure, and we don’t want the babyhead effect, do we?

Overall – she gets an IN from this bitter kitten.

    • guest2visits

I think she’s got to be in really great shape to be able to wear this type of dress and shade so perfectly. Love the shoes too.

    • CatherineRhodes

IN. But only because this is considered tasteful for the Country Music Awards — otherwise it would be out.

    • librarygrrl64

The shoes are IN. The dress is OUT.

    • Candigirl1968

The barest of INs.  Her makeup and hair seem very CMT (in a good way), and the shoes are killa.  Lots of little problems in between her head and feet, though.  The even with the interesting design, the dress still washes Ashley out.  Being at the knee, the dress seems a bit subdued for the event (if it was floor length it might have had more of a CMT wow factor). And, for reasons I can’t quite figure out, she’s got sad boobs in the dress.

    • karen

Oh Hedley Lamarr! T.Lo, I think I love you more, if that’s even possible.

    • rebecca

I forgive the color because the shoes really are amazing.

    • Louise Bryan

In.  It’s an award show, and she’s wearing a showy dress.  And it looks good on her.  And her shoes are fabulous.  In, of course.

    • DinahR

      This is an OUT.

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

    • boomchicabowwow

No, no, no, no no.  Out

    • TAGinMO

Against all odds, I think this “Naked Muppet Dress” looks pretty great on her. And her hair looks Duchess Kate-like. All in all, rather stunning.
